Retirement!!!! Can you believe it but its been over a year since Madi the former Whippingham postmistress retired?? Personally I thought she would get bored and would regret her decision but apparently, although she misses seeing everyone she is very happy and has more than enough to keep her busy she is wondering how she managed to fit the post office in to her busy schedule. In fact, Madi is enjoying retirement so much that her side kick Bonni wants to jump on the retirement train too. Bonni says that although she loves writing for her adoring fans, and over the past 5 years she has enjoyed having her shenanigans shared with all the readers she feels now is the time to sit back, relax a little and enjoy some Bonni time. She said being the superstar Diva that she is takes up a lot of her time and although she knows many of you will be upset reading this she said that she is still going to be about in East Cowes and Whippingham and will still be happy to receive treats and balloons whenever you’re passing!!!!! I’m sure everyone will agree that Bonni has brought a smile to everyones face each month and I feel we have been so lucky that her and Madi have been able to keep us entertained with over 60 stories. Go and enjoy your retirement Bonni you’ve certainly earned it.

Councillor Luisa Hillard – County Councillor for East Cowes. Phone/text: 07964 869341 or email luisa.hillard@iow.gov.uk Many parents will be breathing a sigh of relief as September sees our children return to school after what tends to feel like an endless summer holiday of juggling child care! Best of luck to those children starting in Reception class at Queensgate or Holy Cross, and to those young people moving on to High School. As I had hoped, I returned to work at the start of August following the safe delivery of a healthy boy and we are all doing well. Our thanks to those who have sent their congratulations. Life at County Hall is mixed with increasing concerns that repeated government cuts to the Council budget are making it impossible to continue running essential services. Senior members are lobbying government for an ‘Island Deal’ and are also in talks about the potential for devolution to the region of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. An Executive reshuffle means that I now have a new title and responsibilities: Executive member for Sustainability and Organisational Change. It means that I will no longer be leading on car parking or public realm, which were areas that I enjoyed working on with officers. Instead I will be focusing on the big Council projects, particularly those which we consider to be ‘invest to save’.
Cllr Baker-Smith (Whippingham & Osborne) and I had a meeting with education officers at County Hall a few weeks ago to progress plans to increase childcare provision in the East Cowes area. There options are now being explored to create extra preschool places. Pot holes are one of the issues which residents complain about the most and one of the worst affects roads (I know there are others) is Adelaide Grove. I’m pleased to announce that with the help of the District Steward we have been successful in bringing forward the resurfacing of the worst part (York Avenue to Yarborough) by two years, so it should be undertaken anytime now. Mums and Dads, please don’t flush nappies down the toilet as this recently caused the toilets at the Esplanade to become blocked/ flooded and they had to be closed for repair during the summer holidays. Put nappies and sanitary items in a bin or take them home. Please be aware that black bag waste must be put out for collection no earlier than 7pm on Thursday evenings. There are some residents who are putting out bin bags days before and this is causing rubbish to be strewn across pavements by herring gulls, cats and foxes. Repeat offenders can be prosecuted for fly-tipping and I expect the waste contractors/ Council to be getting more strict about this in the near future.
The Town Signage Project is finally nearing completion! The advertising consent was granted and (at the time of writing this) the Licence is ready to be signed by the Town Council. Then we can see the map boards, My next planned drop-in sessions at the finger post signs, sculpture and chain-link SeaBreeze Café are Thursday 3rd September archway installed. I anticipate that in the next and 1st October at 9.15am. few weeks there will be opportunities for local schools and youth groups to get involved with kind regards, making time capsules as part of the project.

Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support The ‘C’ word is the word no one wants to hear and if it doesn’t affect you directly then it may become part of your life through a family member or friend who is going through it as 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1 in 2 men with other cancers in their lifetime. The word Cancer sends shivers down most spines. Such is its intimidating nature, even with the advances medical science has made in successfully dealing with it; it still retains the fear factor. So having people around who are empathic and able to offer real support can be critical. Usually it is one’s partner and family who provide this; however they too may need support and consideration, which can so easily be overlooked Every person deals with it in a different way but it is important to know that there is support and help out there. Back in 2011 the Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support group, an Island based group was started by fellow travellers to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for radiotherapy treatment.

BEFOR
E
Resin Stone Overlaying is effectively surfacing over your existing block-paved, tarmac or concrete driveway, path or patio. Resin Overlays provide a highly cost-effective and quick way of replacing the surface in the Garden or on the Driveway. As well as being aesthetically pleasing and highly durable, the benefits include: Being both solvent and odour free, during and after application - Restricting growth of weeds - Eliminating loose stones Being environmentally friendly - Compliance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
How is it done?
We initially prepare the existing surface using a high-pressure jet washer system and primer, before applying your chosen resin stone combination. The overlays typically take 1-2 days with minimal inconvenience.
Finishing
We also offer a range of natural or blended stone and surrounding landscaping options including moon stone to truly personalise your resin installation.
