Welcome to the September issue and thank you for picking up a copy. The school summer holidays are drawing to a close but lets hope it doesn’t mean that summer is over... I feel positive that we may have an ‘indian summer’ and let’s hope the warm days continue through to the end of September or even October. This months issue is packed with news and information and a big ‘shout out’ to all budding authors to check out the competition advertised on the back cover. Saturday the 23rd September is “Isle of Wight Day”. It’s a time when the whole community is encouraged to celebrate everything that is good about the Island. There are events happening in towns, communities and villages and you will find a full list of events at www.isleofwightday. com and on pages 14 and 15 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’, which gives information on events happening throughout the whole month. I hope you all have a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Town Mayor Report for East Cowes From Peter Lloyd
(Tel No: 01983 299082 and leave a message for the Mayor)
I hope that you all had a good summer break and enjoyed Cowes Week. Vandalism: the start of the holidays saw a massive rise in mindless vandalism and antisocial behaviour. This is becoming a great concern to your Town Council. Damage at the esplanade included, fire damage to seating, a lifebelt and a rubbish bin even the burning of toilet rolls there has also been broken glass. To try and combat this, CCTV cameras have been installed at the esplanade to capture the culprits on film and to deter this kind of behaviour at the esplanade toilet and the paddling pool area.
East Cowes is a safe area, but all crime needs to be reported to them and that way they will put a police officer on the beat. Muga: The official opening at Victoria recreation ground is to be in September. It is to be named the Morris Barton Play Area and opened by his widow Marcia. Look out for details nearer the time.
Floating Bridge: At the July TC meeting the public where able to ask questions directly to Cllr. D. Steward Leader of the IWC, Cllr. I Ward: Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Transport. J. Metcalfe: CEO IWC, Wendy Perera: Head of Planning, Housing There has also been vandalism at the Jubilee and Regulatory Services and S. Newton: recreation ground to play equipment. The Commercial Services Manager. It was said at a social gathering benefit of all residents and not just those living that I attended “that there are 100 experts in in the area. East Cowes on the Floating Bridge”. If that is the case why have they not listened to them? Unfortunately Cowes Week brought its own With regard to recouping some of the floating antisocial behaviour with attempted vandalism bridge over spend “that if the IWC need to go at the floating bridge waiting shelter area and down this course they will as they will have with the lack of extra toilet facilities; this led to insurance and liability insurance”. some urinating within the close vicinity. The possible development at Crossways These combined pointless acts of behaviour Field - the Town Council did agree to hold a are costing the Town Council, (which you pay public meeting with the planning agency in for), hundreds of pounds to put right. Please attendance, the delay was caused through report all vandalism, antisocial behaviour to holidays the police using the 101 number or the Town Clerk 299082. Can I also ask that dogs are kept Just to remind you that there is a Citizen’s on leads near play equipment. Yoga
by Judith Didham First of all, I would like to say a big thank you to all of you who have attended my Yoga classes in 2017. Normally, of course, we would be resuming classes this month, however I am about to have orthopaedic surgery and have been advised to take a reasonable amount of time to convalesce. Reluctantly, I must therefore not begin my classes again until January 2018. I know this will be disappointing for you but needs must and all that! Normal service will be resumed in the New Year, when we’ll all be in need of some fabulous Yoga to kick start 2018. All classes will begin week commencing Monday 8 January 2018. I will remind you again in the January 2018 issue of this magazine. Any newcomers or people returning after a break, do please call me on 716144 or email me on nfo@judithdidham.co.uk for the latest information. From time to time, I will be posting suggestions for your own Yoga practice, words of inspiration and encouragement on Facebook – Judith Didham Yoga. Please take a look. I look forward to seeing you all in January. Namaste.

People often ask me ‘how do I know if I need a chiropractor?!’ My answer is always ‘can you live your life doing what you want to do, comfortably and healthily? If not come and see us for a free spine check and we will tell you what we can do to help you feel fitter and live your life to the full’ As McTimoney chiropractic is a whole body approach to chiropractic care there is no typical patient or condition that we treat – it might be a guitarist wanting help with a painful wrist, an unsettled baby who has had a difficult birth or an 80 year old that wants to be able to dig their garden more comfortably. Other common presenting conditions include simple low back pain, stiff necks, migraines and everything else in between. If we think that chiropractic care is not the solution to the presenting problem we will always tell you and suggest an alternative treatment. If we do think we can help you we will treat you as little as possible to get you and keep you as well as we possibly can. We look forward to seeing you soon at Cowes Chiropractic Clinic! News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love In more news myself and concerned residents are meeting with Southern Water to discuss the unsightly and costly breakdown of the Adelaide pumping station, sewage discharges and actions required to prevent the collapse and severing of the sewage pipes at Spring Hill. Local community activists have been working hard for several years to address issues and I will offer support in trying to help them create a safer environment for us all. They really have been working hard in this and I think it is important to recognise their efforts. The Red Funnel Enquiry has been and gone and we wait to see the outcome of the inspector. It’s all in her hands and either way the result will see big changes coming to our town. However, the changes won’t be as sudden as you might think, more likely a year or two as it takes time to redevelop.

A Holly Maslen Front Cover
Here at Island Magazines we have been very lucky to have the wonderfully creative Holly Maslen allow us to use one of her designs on the front cover. I’m sure you will agree that her pen and ink designs are beautiful and she had many to choose from and this one just caught our eye and was just perfect for us. Holly has worked for many years as a marine artist but decided to go back to her childhood style of pen and ink work, drawing and designing exclusively in black and white. Over the last five years she has worked on many projects including sixteen murals for the Isle of Wight Zoo, a mural in Sloane Square for fashion designer Charlotte Taylor and an exhibition of drawings at Freud in London to accompany the publication of her illustrated book “Escargot Masquerade & Other Stories”. Smaller scale projects have included t-shirt designs for skate company Wight Trash and her own scarves and pocket squares sold via the international Japanese designer Masato.

In 2016 Holly opened a gallery in Bembridge for six months, showcasing the work of over 30 Island Artists and now runs another gallery in Bembridge called Mini Big Art on Embankment Road which is open 124pm Wednesday through to Sunday. After a break of a year Holly has started designing again in her customary black and white style and will be bringing out a range of products next month. East Cowes Business Association News by Simon Craddock It looks like I spoke to soon, what a washout August has been. Feedback from the shops too has been that August in general, particularly Cowes Week, has been one of the quietest for many years. Let’s hope for a sunny and successful September.
ECBA is working with Destination Cowes, which is essentially a group tasked with promoting the wider ‘north of Medina’ area, including East Cowes, Cowes, Whippingham, Northwood and Gurnard to a larger mainland audience. This As some readers will know, I was lucky is supported by CBA, Cowes Town Council, enough to get the opportunity to be an ‘extra’ Osborne House and Red Funnel amongst in the film Victoria & Abdul last year, and for others. Although not purely business the last 12 months, have been driving my related, we contribute a small sum to ensure family and friends up the wall talking about that East Cowes is kept in the loop. They are it (I went into overdrive once the trailers looking to begin a festival or annual event, were released last month). I found the so get your thinking hats on and let’s get it experience of being behind the scenes utterly happening in our town! fascinating, but it made me appreciate once more how special Osborne House is, and ECBA is continuously trying to come up in turn, how lucky we are to live in a town with ideas to get residents into our town, with so many truly remarkable bits of history to use our services (not just the shops, but scattered around, which includes not only plumbers, electricians, garages, restaurants, the ‘royal stuff’ but monuments & graves, engineers and architects). If you have any and evidence of technological development ideas, get in touch. that continues to have major significance around the world. The Heritage Centre on Our website is constantly being tweaked and Clarence Road is an absolute gem and has a updated by Shaun, but importantly, he needs wealth of local information, holding records content for your business. If you would like on people, buildings, spaces and places; we to add some details to your profile, all you are incredibly lucky to have such dedicated need to do is send us the information in volunteers preserving our past. an e mail, along with some high resolution I get particularly frustrated when I hear people (of all ages) complaining that there are no shops in East Cowes. We a small selection of shops, but importantly, they are mainly independent shops owned by local people. They offer a huge range selling everything from whoopee cushions to washing detergent, gifts to garden spades, but they need your support and your custom. Please take a look along lower York Avenue and Clarence Road before heading into Newport or Ryde, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Earlier this year, we saw the sad closing of Geraldine’s, the popular sweet shop in East Cowes Town, due to the retirement of the owner Sandy Turner. Unfortunately the sad news hasn’t stopped there as sadly, Sandy passed away at the end of July. There aren’t many people in East Cowes who hadn’t at some time had a conversation with Sandy. She was a happy, bubbly person who had a kind word for everyone and she was a particular favourite of our four legged furry friends who knew exactly where she kept the treat box. Her shop was an aladdin’s cave and stocked just about everything... If Geraldine’s didn’t have it in stock then it probably didn’t exist. She will be sadly missed and our thoughts are with her husband, Colin and family. 19
