The Cinnamon Trust is national charity and a much-needed source here on the island. Their objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They work in partnership with people over retirements age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness to offer all kinds of free pet care.

I honestly do not know where this year has gone! If you are a regular reader of this community publication you may remember that the last few years, the September issue front cover has always been dedicated to anything tractor themed. This is partly because I have always had a love of tractors and secondly September is harvesting season and we are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or to the frustration of many but to my delight stuck behind one in traffic. I will be showing my age here, but I remember years ago when I was growing up, I looked forward to helping load the bales on to the trailer which in those times were just held on with a bit of rope and then sitting on the top bouncing about as we went along the road. Back then, health and safety wasn’t an issue and at times there could be a few of us on the top of the stack and if any of the bales did fall on the road, then we just stopped and picked them up. In those days everything was just a bit more laid back. There wouldn’t have been moaning, honking of horns or even road rage when this happened, just acceptance that your journey may be delayed by a few minutes. Imagine how this would be greeted on Coppins Bridge now!!

For once I am not going to make any comments on the weather... it is what it is, and we just have to take each day as it comes and, on that note, I wish you all a wonderful September and I look forward to catching up with you again next month. care and keep safe.

September is graced with having two different birth flowers. The two flowers are the vibrant aster and the beautiful yet resilient morning glory. The significance of both flowers is actually very similar, with the aster being said to represent love, while the morning glory represents affection.

September Facts and Events

September only has one birthstone though, but with a stone like this, who needs another? The stone is the majestically vivid sapphire. With its deep blue tones, this precious stone is said to represent the wisdom of the gods, purity, and trust. Sapphires were once worn to protect the wearer from both poisoning and other evils.

in September are brought into this world under one of two-star signs. If you were born before September 23rd, you’re considered to be a Virgo. If you’re born on the 23rd or later, you’re a Libra. Virgos are said to be analytical and hardworking people, while still being kind and loyal. Libras, on the other hand, value harmony and diplomacy, and are said to be both intelligent and kind.

On September 30, 1955, the American cultural icon and famed movie star James Dean had his life cut short by a car crash in California at the early age of 24. While his acting career was all too short, he is still heralded as an incredibly influential actor, especially for his role in Rebel Without a Cause.

September 2, 1666, was a terrible time for the city of London. A raging fire broke out within the older section of the city, completely destroying all it touched within the ancient Roman walls. What’s most surprising about this tragedy is that there were only 6 recorded Thosedeaths!born

Historial

September was originally the seventh month of the ancient Roman calendar, and as such it was named Septem, which translates into “the seventh month”. It wasn’t until 451 BC that the months of January and February were added to the calendar, making September the ninth Septembermonth.heralds the beginning of Autumn in the northern hemisphere, with it officially commencing on the September equinox, which this year will be at 02:03 on Friday 23rd SeptemberSeptember. 1, 1939, was a dark day for the world. It was on this day that Hitler invaded Poland, consequentially beginning World War II.

September 11, 2001, changed the shape of the world forever. It was on this fateful day that the worst terrorist attack on US soil happened when four commercial airliners were hijacked. Two of the planes were flown straight into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre, and another was crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crash-landed into a field in Pennsylvania after the passengers of the flight attempted to regain control of the plane from the terrorists.

14 News Report from Town & County Cllr Karl Love - East Cowes. Email: karl.love@iow.gov.uk

Welcome to my report and what a hot, hot and dry summer it’s been. As I write this report for you it’s the first day it has rained in many weeks. The hosepipe ban continues, and our town and Islands green vegetation is struggling. Many of us are trying to work out how we are going to pay our bills, make savings and what we can personally cut to balance our household incomes. I find it inconceivable that we have arrived at this point. East Cowes has a Food Pantry operating out of the Pavilion and organised by the volunteers of the Community Spirited team. For just £5 one can obtain approximately £15 in goods in return. It’s a small help but essential for those who are struggling to find the funds to feed themselves. I anticipate that the need for this service will double and quadruple in the coming months. Our Government and Member of Parliament Mr Seely’s, first priority must be to get the cost-of-living crisis under control, make every effort to bring down energy costs and ensure no one will go hungry and cold this winter. We must look out for one another this winter. Try to ensure our neighbours and relatives are not sitting at home alone in cold rooms and houses. We need to do more than just survive a cold winter, we need to be active and engaged. There is a lot to gain by joining a community group or volunteering. Sharing life stories with other and writing your own and family stories and creating a memory box is another. These things help to keep happy, active, and healthy minds. On a practical side you can make sure your home is insulated without spending too much. Fixing those drafts and cold spots one knows exists but have been left for years. Using a combination of of window blinds and curtains or double curtains. Lagging exposed pipes and insulating the loft and walls. Resetting your heating and hot water timers where possible. Are they efficiently used? Using low energy light bulbs. Making sure the standby buttons are turned off at night on electrical equipment. If things are really very tight and difficult for relatives, cooking shared meals and sharing evenings at one another homes can help. Having game nights or going out to social clubs and venues is beneficial and helps make savings. Our town council is looking at how we can help support our community. There has been lots of enjoyment occurring along the esplanade and it’s been hard work for the town council in trying to keep the paddling pool operational with all the visitors and the esplanade has come alive like never before with the opening of the new walkway. We are looking forward to seeing the next phase of the regeneration of this area. Meanwhile the Regeneration of the Albany Green public space is starting to take shape with community consultations about how to improve and make the area a better green space. There is government funding for this so it’s not just a fantasy project. The truth is what we want and what we get might not be the same so we must ensure at least some of the proposals requested come to fruition. There are time lines on the spending of these funds and so we need to get on with it and the work is being led by IWC and supported by East Cowes Town Council. We hope that businesses will also help us all out and make a contribute to improving this area. You can go online to see some of the concept designs and make your suggestions. You need to do this very soon. The funds must be spent by the end of 2024.

News Report from Cllr Karl Love continued developers disagree with our position. The Local Planning Authority will determine the outcome. I have expressed my concerns to the developer during consultations as have others. I will not be pressured to give way to things which I believe are not in the public interest however challenging the communication becomes from the Developers own representative. I and others are entitled to disagree, and we know that there have been other interested parties with their own concepts and development ideas for the estates. Therefore, it is not credible to state that this is the only way the castle can be restored and saved. It is the only plan, at this time, the developers have put forward. They may well have made some tweaks and compromises to this proposal but, it falls well short of what I and many others feel is appropriate. At town consultations the access point along the esplanade was overwhelmingly rejected. However, the developers continued with their proposals and entirely at their own risk, and knowing that this was a major concern and rejected by local people. Norris Castle and Spring Hill has its own access roads which are equally complicated. We now wait to see what happens next in the process. I and your council are doing our duty in keeping you informed and representing a considered view. On a more positive note progress is being made with the mediation of the floating bridge and I feel excited and encouraged that we can finally start looking to the future developing a good reliable service although it will take a while to bring this to fruition.

Wishing you all good health and please do not hesitate to contact me for a discussion or support. Sometimes it take a while for me to respond but I do read your emails and many of your comments online The East Side Curve opened with a fanfare by local Musicians Jukebox Jazz and our town Mayor Tracy Reardon cut the ribbon. Our High Sheriff Kay Marriott, who was born an East Cowes girl was also in attendance. It was a sizzling hot day, and many attended. There is still some snagging and tweaking to do but its open and completed so it’s on to the next project. East Cowes Town council is certainly being very active at this time and there is a lot going on to try to regenerate and move our town forward into the future. Did you know that in 2024 it will be 200 years since the workers of our town built its first lifeboat and we are planning a party to celebrate. Plans are already afoot and perhaps another of East Cowes Grand Processions might take place?

In other news. The Norris Castle development planning application continues to rumble on. It is now thought that the planning proposals will come forward for a hearing and a decision in November or December. Time for some plain speaking. Your town council is making a strong representative view and has objected to the submitted proposals as have I, your elected representative. We have listened and met the developers, taken professional advice on this matter and concluded that this plan has many pitfalls. Naturally, the developers do not agree with our conclusions and findings. I have come under intense fire from the developers because I, along with other leading heritage organisations and town council do not support and agree with the ambitions and many of the proposals put forward by the developers. We are not saying the Castle should not be developed, we are saying this plan and many of its components are not in keeping with one of our nation’s most important and significant heritage landscapes and heritage assets.
