The effort of performing yoga postures is controlled by including an equal measure of comfort. Deep breathing helps to calm the mind. My own yoga journey began over 20 years ago, and the benefits of positive mood and increased energy keep me practising. The British Wheel of Yoga with whom I am trained are the largest governing body for yoga in the U.K. In over 10 years of teaching, experience shows me that every student is an individual, and my classes are carefully crafted to create both enjoyment and challenge that is appropriate to all levels of ability, with use of alternatives and modifications. Often people who have enjoyed yoga in the past come back for more, beginners have grown to love yoga in these classes, and if you are experienced you will find this practice a valuable step on your on-going journey. Come and join us and see what this friendly class can do for you! 2

Freshwater Parish Council Working For The Community Cllr Gill Kennett
Following the May election the Parish Council have distributed a flyer with an update on the Councillors. Following his re-election as County Councillor for Freshwater South John Medland has stepped down from the Parish Council and we are in the process of filling this vacancy.
Freshwater Parish Council Update
Avenue Road Resurfacing Works – This work is due to commence in early September, as many of you may know we have had a few false starts. Cllr Wheeler is leading on this project for the Parish Council and is in close liaison with Island Roads. There will inevitably be some disruption whilst this work is happening but Island Roads will be sending out updates and the Parish Council will also work to ensure that all those affected are kept informed of progress. Stroud Field – You may have noticed that some new swings have appeared on Stroud Field and the Parish Council have commissioned other items of play equipment, which we hope will be installed shortly. The Parish Council worked with local children via All Saints School to find out what play equipment they would most want to see on the field. As a result a Zip Wire, more swings and a roundabout will soon be added to the existing playground and we hope they have a lot of use over the school holidays. Community Safety – Many residents and particularly local shopkeepers have been very concerned about the recent spate of broken shop windows through the Village. We have had a very positive meeting with the Neighbourhood Policing Team about this issue plus other concerns raised with us by members of the community. We only seem to have one Neighbourhood Watch area currently in place and no active Shopwatch scheme so we will work with the Police to try and re-establish some of these initiatives. We are having discussions around CCTV in the Village centre. Freshwater Village Fete – Thank you to all of those people who helped in many ways towards the success of the Village Fete on June 17th. It was well attended and we have had feedback from residents saying how much they enjoyed it. It was also great to see so many people young and old having a go on the new Climbing Wall in West Wight Sports and Community Centre. We were lucky to have such a lovely day for the Fete. It was also really good to see the Community Parade from Colwell Common to Jubilee Field on July 8th and the events on that day for Freshwater Live. Thanks to the West Wight Carnival Committee, Totland Parish Council and all those involved. 4
Freshwater Parish Council Working For The Community Cllr Gill Kennett
Freshwater Library – The work referred to by Cllr Wheeler in the last Parish Council update has now been completed giving the Library updated facilities for the benefit of the Library and the community. New bench at Moa Place – The Parish Council are very grateful to Boris Moscoff for his suggestion of using the trunk of a fallen tree at Golden Hill to create a new bench to replace the broken one on the grassed area at the top part of Moa Place car park. Boris drew the plans for the bench and Paul Sivell carved it for us. The soil that was taken out for the base of seat was redeployed to a project in Spinfish Lane. Report from Cllr Stuart Hutchinson: White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. Is it me or have you also noticed there are more tourists about than last year? It may be because we have had a really good spring and summer, and so many people watch the forward weather forecast before they take a short break. Certainly I know from serving on Yarmouth Harbour Committee that if the weather forecast is good, there are many more boats in the Harbour. And it may be that the poor exchange rate between the pound and the euro is persuading more people to holiday here. That’s good for our businesses and so the Island economy generally. Also, over the last year, a number of businesses have added capacity to their offering, and several are going upmarket, not just offering camping facilities but the new style “glamping” which means you get to camp but with your own kitchen and shower. Much more popular! More tourists means more work for Islanders but it also makes it more difficult for them to take time off during the summer months when their own children are out of school. For that reason, one of the things we promised before the last election, was that we would consult with schools and parents about changing the school term times, to spread the load, as well as making it a bit cheaper to go on holiday themselves, as of course prices increase during the school holidays. That consultation will take place during the next academic year, and if changes are wanted, then they will be introduced the following year.
new Adult Social Care Cabinet Member, in agreement with our Director of Social Services, has brought in additional support for those elderly people leaving hospital after perhaps an illness or a fall, and they are able, because of that extra care, to return to their own homes rather than having to enter residential care. The technical term for inadequate help after leaving hospital is DETOC (delayed transfer of care) and whereas before there were dozens of people every month who were unsupported, that’s now just two or three. The aim of course is zero. I took on the role of Cabinet Member for Resources, and amongst other things I found that the job included responsibility for the Council’s Contact Centre. If you have ever had cause to phone the Council about any of it’s services, you will know that sometimes you hang on for ages. People have told me that they have been waiting for 20 or 30 minutes. Extraordinary patience.
It’s easy to cut things to the point where they don’t work, and it takes time and money to get them back to a good standard. Our performance has got to get better. I visited the Contact Centre last month. The fault is not with our operators, they work incredibly hard. There just aren’t enough of them. About 600,000 calls are taken every year and the aim is to deal with the great majority at that first point of contact. But it means that we have to have capacity One of the other things we promised, as I to do that and the staff handling the call have said in my last article, was that we would to have extensive training because of the reduce the numbers of Council and Committee huge variety of services the council provides. Meetings, so less talking and more doing. I’ve already identified additional funding to We did that at the first Council meeting after increase capacity and will use that just as soon the election. We also changed things so that as we can change the budget. My aim is to Cabinet Members would take decisions and get the average wait time to about a minute hold personal responsibility for them. Already or so and the longest wait at peak times to we are seeing the changes. For instance, our about ten minutes. The whole recruitment and improvement process will take several months. 12

compact camera but that all changed when her friend lent her a DSLR camera and Tara took some photos of the red arrows over the Solent. She was then hooked and went and brought her own camera and so her photography journey began... The only problem I had was deciding which of Tara works full time in Newport and in her her photos to use as they were all amazing but spare time she does wedding dress alterations there was just something about the ‘poppy’ but always ensures she finds time to get out that caught my eye and in an instant I knew and about to different locations across the this was the one for August. I went to see Jan after a personal www.islandmagazines.co.uk recommendation and I have to say Jan has magic healing hands. I have tried several treatments now and I have to say my favourite is the warm bamboo massage. I get asked about my wellbeing every time I go, as I do a very physically demanding job. I need to be careful with my current medical conditions, which have also improved since receiving reflexology from Jan. I honestly cannot recommend Jan highly enough. 5***** Well done Jan! Charlotte

Perfect Homemade Burgers It’s definitely BBQ season and you can’t beat the taste of a homemade burger. This recipe is just 6 ingredients and takes less than 20 minutes to make so you won’t be tied to the kitchen. This recipe is using beef mince but you can easily substitute it for turkey mince for a more leaner option without losing any of the taste. These burgers can be cooked on the BBQ, under the grill, fried or in the oven. Sandwich your burger between a floury bap or a ciabatta roll, top with fresh lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onion, cheese and a spread of relish. These will be loved by adults and children alike Top tip: The eggs and breadcrumbs aren’t essential but will help bind the ingredients together. Serves 4 Ingredients • 500g good quality mince • Good pinch of oregano • 1tsp salt • Pinch of black pepper • handful of breadcrumbs or 2 slices of bread • 1 egg, lightly beaten Method 1. Place the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together or whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together. 2. Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wet hands. To get perfectly round shapes, press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over-handle the burgers 3. Place the burgers on the barbecue or in a frying pan and cook until they’re done all the way through and there’s no pinkness in the middle. To check this, press down the top of a burger with a fish slice - if there are pink juices oozing out, then cook for a few more minutes. 4. Serve on a lightly toasted ciabatta with salad and toppings and enjoy!!!
