What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services. There is no need to book to attend an Alzheimer Café, you are welcome to come along to any of the Cafés across the Island (ACE7 is for people with Young Onset Dementia aged 45-65 years). There is no charge to attend an Alzheimer Café – but we welcome donations in the orange collection boxes. (Booking is only necessary when Covid-19 restrictions apply.) Welcome to the August issue and there is no denying that summer is here! Whilst writing this we are in the middle of an amber weather warning for the extreme high temperatures the island is experiencing... like many others I am finding it quite unbearable, but it could be worse - we could be in a built-up city, hours away from the beach and ocean.

I’ve been seeking shelter and enjoying picnics under the trees in many of the parks we have on the Island. Isn’t it amazing what we have on our doorsteps? This month is set to be a great month on the Island, as after being absent for a couple of years due to the pandemic we can finally say that August is once again Carnival time... Our dates for your diary section on page 13 is a handy guide to know what’s on and when, ensuring you don’t miss any of the fun or if carnivals just aren’t your thing, you’ll know which areas to avoid and when!!!

This month’s issue is once again packed with news, information, local advertising, puzzles and much more. I need to stop looking at this month’s front cover as the temptation to get up and leave the office in search of a 99 with an extra flake is very strong. I have certainly eaten more than my fair share of ice cream during this hot spell, but I believe that by eating them I am supporting local businesses... well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Please keep using the services of local advertisers who advertise with us, and I hope you all have a lovely August, and, on that note, I am off to get an ice cream! See you again next month.

Report from George Cameron - Freshwater So, further from my rant about the illegal pavement parking opposite Sainsbury’s I thought I better do something about it myself instead of relying on others to act on it. I contacted Island Roads and explained the problems it caused. I must say that I was impressed by the response I received almost immediately after the call which I copied here for you. “Further to our telephone conversation of today, I have requested that your suggestion to either erect bollards on the footway or raise the kerb height outside Petesoria, Freshwater be added to the Highway Safety & Improvements Register for assessment and consideration. If a scheme passes the relevant tests, it would be referred to the Isle of Wight Council for determination.” I just hope it passes the tests and that the IOW council will have the sense to approve the works, but this is the stage where I start to worry, we all know the speed the council works at. Freshwater Parish council recently held a planning meeting to discuss the Camp Road application, although the meeting was out of the normal meeting schedule, quite a few members of the public attended to raise their concerns, and rightly so. The Parish reiterated their previous comments and added more comments of objection to this planned 127-unit application. Some of the reasons for refusal are: Agriculture: This is a DEFRA Grade 2 listed site; therefore, it is of high agricultural value. Ecology: The Parish Council does not have any confidence in the validity or accuracy of the reports presented and asked for a full ecological report to be submitted. Access: FPC supports Island 6

Roads report and their objection to the application. Type of Housing: The suggested housing will not meet the local need. Flooding: The current system cannot cope, and a full flood risk assessment needs to be completed. Overdevelopment: This is overdevelopment of the site and not in keeping with the rest of the surrounding area, it will lead to horizontal growth from the village centre rather than maintaining village and community life. It is also not in keeping with our neighbourhood plan. Even the Police have submitted a damning report and asked for refusal. I am normally very positive, and I do support the supply of new appropriate homes in the West Wight because we are a growing area, but this proposal looks out of sync with our local needs. It will definitely end up at the main planning meeting in County Hall for determination, but I fear if this application is approved the flooding problem at Camp Road will get worse. There are a lot of comments online, and I think they are all valid reasons for refusal of this application. Just to make you smile, after the meeting I was informed that amongst the members of the public that attended the meeting was who? The developer himself! I would have thought that he could have answered some of the questions himself, well, we know now who we are dealing with. On that note, I wish you all a good summer and stay safe.

News Update from John Medland - Freshwater South jcmedland@outlook.com or 07543309219. I am getting positive feedback on the Causeway repairs along with a sigh of ‘how did it take so long’ and the need to introduce lower speed/a one way or no parking policy. I am inclined to think that we need 20 MPH speeds for roads west of the Yar which lack footways and often narrow to a single carriageway. In the past 3 months we have run 31 Speedwatch sessions, each lasting about one hour. We have checked the speeds of 3,245 vehicles and registered 161 ‘Speeders’, which is 5% of the total. A ‘Speeder’ is someone doing 35 or more in a 30mph zone. One improvement we should be considering as a safety priority is a zebra crossing of Gate Lane in Freshwater Bay between the car park or Coastguard Lane and the green. I am delighted that IWC is now proposing a second bid for the ‘Levelling Up Fund’ to fund an off-road route from Ryde to Freshwater, which could provide the capital investment to create the “West Wight Greenway” we have long prioritised between the old railway bridleway that ends at Thorley Road with Carisbrooke/ Newport and the rest of the Island’s cycling network. As some of you will recall from Graham Biss’ presentation last summer the dozen intervening landowners are currently in agreement on establishing the new route. We seem to have a unique opportunity to realise a top demand of the WW Landscape Partnership survey of some twenty years ago. IWC was successful in the first bid to rejuvenate our maritime construction

industry in East Cowes last year. IWC has an eight-year record in attracting funding to promote cycling from the Dept of Transport, and we have a strong case. Please remember that I attend Our Place Café each week from 11.00 to 12.00 in case you want to discuss anything with me.

August Facts and Historial Events On the 6th August 1762, the first-ever sandwich was created. It was named after the Earl of Sandwich when he requested a dish involving meat between two pieces of bread. As the story goes, he requested it as he was in the middle of a gambling game and didn’t want to interrupt it.

different though, as it is a sign of imagination, eternal sleep, and oblivion!

August was a big month for the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. It was on the 28th August 1963, that Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I have a dream” speech to 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Considered to be one of the most iconic speeches in the history of the US, King’s speech called for the end of racial discrimination and for equal rights to all.

There are of course many incredibly famous and important people who have been born in August including Usain Bolt, Madonna, Sean Connery, Barack Obama, Whitney Houston and although not famous, I myself (Debbie).

Unlike most other months, August has just one birthstone – peridot. One of the lesser-known gems, peridots come in shades from grassgreen to a more earthy olive hue. They’re quite a unique gem, and quite rare as they can only be found from two very different sources – they August was once the sixth month of the year. can be formed deep in the earth and expelled In the original ten-month Roman calendar, the to the surface along with lava, and they can be month went by the name of Sextilis, meaning found in meteorites! “the sixth month” in Latin. From joy’s humble

crumble kitchen

At times there seems to be more ‘month’ left than money. Here are a few recipe ideas (from your store cupboard) that may help you to stretch the gap!

CHICKPEA PANCAKES 1 tin chickpeas - rinse well through strainer and drain 1 egg - little milk. Blend the chickpeas then add the egg and milk to make a batter consistency. Put a little oil in a non-stick pan and cook the pancakes 1 - 2 minutes each side. Top with sliced bananas, a little honey, peanut butter or fresh berries.

TUNA BAKE (serves 6)

FALAFEL BURGERS

400g can chickpeas - rinse well and drain 1 small onion - chopped 1 clove garlic - chopped 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander pinch chilli powder 2 tbsp plain flour 4 pitta bread

Pat dry the chickpeas. Put all the ingredients, plus seasoning, in a bowl. Using a hand blender blend until fairly smooth and mixed together. Shape into 4 patties using your hands. Fry 3 minutes on each side. Serve in a split pitta with any salad you may have.

News Report from Cllr Chris Jarman - Totland & Colwell Tel: 07905 002834/Email ChrisJarmanforTotland@gmail.com I’ve just returned from another of the regular car boot sales at Colwell Common. Each one raises funds for a local charitable group or similar enterprise and today was for our local Scouts. I’m pleased to report that the donation bucket placed at the entrance was filling up nicely and reflected the generous community we enjoy together. Even in these hard times local residents can find a few coins for a good cause.

A more challenging development has been the discovery of more dead seabirds along our shoreline from Tennyson Down via the Needles and on the north shore. The suspect is bird flu, but formal investigations will need to confirm if this is the case. Other examples have been widely reported but mostly in the Ryde area, so this extension of the impact area is a serious concern.

My return coincided with the arrival of the Boys Brigade ‘advance guard’ in my fields off Court Road. Everything had been prepared for their arrival although there was nothing I could do about the baked-hard ground - their youthful muscle and giant-sized mallets will be tested as they erect their marquee and tent city. The advance guard will soon be followed by the first of the boy’s brigade troops from the North Island and the 7am bugle and bagpipes again announce their daily awakening. I trust that local residents will welcome their annual summer camping and support them in their endeavours. Many come from urban settings and the unusual (to them) sight of adjacent cows and nightly roaming of foxes, badgers and hedgehogs will no doubt result in the odd shrill followed by a rapid illumination of iPhone torches!

On a brighter note we are enjoying a boom in the number of local red squirrels - the past years have been a blessing to them with mild winters and bountiful harvests and the sight of a line of young following their parent along the top of a fence raises quite a smile. Protecting local natural habitat is essential to all our wellbeing and the continuing planting of new trees and securing of local meadows has brought obvious benefit. Many will be aware that the bird nesting season has been extended to September. While this brings the inevitable issue of brambles and narrowed roads and paths, all of our wildlife enjoys the protection hedgerows provide. For myself and other members of our West Wight Walking for Health Group, carrying a pair of snippers has become even more useful!

The cycle of other local summer events is now in full swing, and the community hardly has time to draw a breath between Freshwater Horticultural show, Abbeyfield Garden Party and the myriad of daily events. We are indeed blessed to enjoy such a vibrant and engaging season of summer events ahead of us. 18

One final thought is to note the great success of our recent job fare for our IOW Ukrainian guests - 25 employers eagerly signing up Ukrainians that were equally eager to gain useful employment. A real boon given our many job vacancies and some relief for desperate businesses and the local economy they support.
