elcome to the February issue and thank you for picking up a copy.
February is the last month of Winter before we move into Spring and hopefully it will be a mild month for us. I don’t mind the cold, as long as it doesn’t rain and I’ll even be happy if we have a scattering of snow. On page 16 you will find my article on e-bikes and whether they are good or not... there has been a lot of hype about cycling on the island and specifically about e-bikes and how they are good for our mental and physical health. You may have had to do a double take of the front cover this month... don’t worry you aren’t seeing things, that really is a fox in the basket of a bicycle. You can read more about Marley on page 6. We have many of our regular features inside, including the latest news reports for the area, puzzle pages and business editorials. Covid is still a threat to us all and the island has really pulled together and worked as one big community in getting so many people vaccinated and boosted and we must give a shout out to everyone who has volunteered and worked at the vaccination centres. If you have any news or information you would like to share in the next issue, please get in touch with me. I hope you have a great February and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Peter Spink Freshwater North & Yarmouth Peter.Spink@iow.gov.uk In 2019 the natural beauty of our Island was recognised internationally by the awarding of UNESCO biosphere status to the whole of the Island and much of the Solent. There are only six other biospheres in the U.K., but for a variety of reasons, including the intervention of Covid, we haven’t made enough of this special award. That, however, is about to change, as all decisions and reports of the Council will now be required to embrace the objectives of the biosphere. These range from protecting the environment and biodiversity to combating climate change and poverty. Further, the biosphere, if properly publicised, will provide a boost to tourism and hospitality businesses on the Island. Of course, the Biosphere is not a panacea for the problems that we face, but it is in my view a significant step in the right direction. Regular readers of this magazine will know that I am against inappropriate development on greenfields, particularly when the housing will not be affordable by Islanders. I am pleased, therefore, that the Council has agreed that it made errors of law when considering the Westridge Farm planning application and that the matter will be reheard by the Planning Committee in March. Although Westridge Farm is in Ryde the decision is important for the West Wight, because it demonstrates how development can be effectively challenged. In addition, there are parallels with the recent decision re Birch Close, which is now being considered by the ‘Westridge legal team’. I shall be joining Cllr John Medland (Freshwater South) on the first Tuesday of the month at ‘Our Place Café’ in Freshwater, please come and say hello and feel free to raise any matters that you would like to discuss.

What I love most about my job and publishing this magazine is I get to meet some amazing people and animals and the opportunity to support some amazing projects. Today is no different and I have just come back from meeting Marley the fox and Pauline. Marley the fox is nearing her second birthday and she had a tough start. At just 2 weeks old she was abandoned by her mum and was found alone, frightened, and crying on Sandown Seafront by a couple taking a stroll. As there are no dedicated fox rescue centres on the Island, Pauline, who has rescued numerous animals over the years was called and she took in the tiny cub who was covered in flies and ticks, had worms and wouldn’t have survived the night. At the time we were in a full lockdown and getting any help and assistance was proving difficult for Pauline but with the help from a mainland charity, Fox Angels Foundation, Pauline was able to assess that Marley had a few health issues including a problem with her kidneys which still needs treatment every 4 – 6 months. During the rehabilitation process it became apparent that Marley would never survive being released back into the wild as each day and week that passed, she grew more dependent on Pauline and a bond formed that could never be broken and it was at this point that both Pauline and Marley settled into a routine with each other, and it has been this way since. Pauline is extremely Pauline is aware that if any other avenue had been taken adamant that foxes should then Marley would have been put to sleep, but it is clear to NOT be pets and that she see that although she does have health issues Marley is is in no way glorifying the happy and living the best life she could with Pauline, her situation and just because five rescue dogs and numerous other animals. she has a fox it doesn’t mean others should do the same. As there is no longer a dedicated fox rescue facility on the Island, Pauline is creating a dedicated rescue centre aptly named ‘Marley’s Haven’ so she can continue to provide a safe place for cubs and foxes to be cared for, rehabilitated, and released. For this Pauline must expand her current facilities, provide separate units for veterinary care, cub nursery and rehabilitation areas including indoor and outdoor exercise areas. Pauline has the land to accommodate these extra measures and is getting some support from ‘Keep the Ban’ but desperately needs more help to be able to care for multiple animals at a time. She needs various materials for the units, incubators, heat lamps, bedding, medication, and food. Pauline has set up a GoFundMe page for Marley’s Haven and at this stage every pound helps so please donate as much as you can to this great project. To donate please go to https://gofund.me/68e78904 Marley’s Haven will be a much-needed facility. Pauline is available for any rescues (and knowing Pauline it won’t just be foxes) and if you come across an injured fox call Pauline on 07902 148415 and she will do everything in her power to collect, care and release them. It should also be noted that if you find a cub on its own, nine times out of ten it is best to leave the cub as the mother will most likely come back to it. Watch and monitor from a distance but if the mother does not reappear or the cub looks sick/injured then please call Pauline in the first instance. You can follow Marley and Pauline’s journey on Facebook ‘Marley’s Haven’ and Instagram ‘marley_cub_fox’.

News Report from Cllr Chris Jarman - Totland & Colwell Tel: 07905 002834/Email ChrisJarmanforTotland@gmail.com Personally, I was looking forward to a quieter time over the New Year period, but reality often has other plans for us. Totland and Colwell have a reasonable amount of social housing and generally the housing associations do their best to support residents and to maintain the properties. Since the early part of December, I have become inundated with housing issues as the increasingly difficult housing and financial crisis deepens. All too often residents are needing to choose between food and heating as the price from the energy suppliers rockets without any meaningful support from Westminster. No heating in the middle of winter is an absolute crisis for anyone, especially where it is a family with children involved. The misery presented to me was reminiscent of my own situation as a student and shortly after where every penny was counted into piles on a coffee table to see what if anything was left for ‘the meter’. Not only is cold an incremental element on mental health issues, but it also brings secondary problems with damp and the physical health worries from mould on increasingly saturated and furry walls. Although greatly pressured, I am pleased that the housing associations and our own IW Council staff have been able to respond. My fear is that, even with their tremendous assistance, the core issues remain without resolution.
added when Tesco’s application to replace the Co-op roadside sign was rejected (go figure?). Like many such whispers the rumour became more severe with each telling and even extending to possible closure of the store. At the same time the future of the in-store Post Office was also thrown into doubt and in our community with a more aged population, high dependency on faceto-face transactions and no remaining banks, another crisis rumour was set loose! Fortunately, we were able over the holidays to obtain a definitive position from all concerned: Tesco’s confirmed that the transition was going ahead, the NatWest and Lloyds mobile banks that will cover the transition will be available, and Tesco confirmed in writing that they will retain the in-store Post Office. A huge sigh of relief for our community but sadly bringing a deflated situation to local groups where another topic of conversation had to be found.
The final and equally serious topic is that of the IW Council budget consultation. Deeply in debt and with a Westminster Government failing to respond to our offshore plight and continued real reductions in funding, it is easy to feel that we have been thrown to the wolves. The hope, elected in May last year, is our Alliance of Councillors that have come together with focus and determination to turn this ship around. No one is Our second key local issue has been the long pretending the course will be calm and we running saga of the Freshwater Co-op and the do have many challenges to face. Being open and transparent is at the core of the Alliance possible takeover by Tesco. Everyone in our community had expected the announcements philosophy and hence we are asking all residents and businesses to guide some of in early 2021 to have been fulfilled and the name change to Tesco to have been completed the key decisions we need to make. Every voice counts and will be listened to, so have in September. The Island being what it your say. It’s only 5 minutes of your time is, inevitable rumours spread like wildfire but invaluable to us: www.surveymonkey. regarding both the possible failure of the co.uk/r/BD9VYJF transition with fuel added when Tesco’s

Report from George Cameron Freshwater I have been informed that the controversial planning application for 44 units off Birch Close remains an option for call in, all three county councillors in our area are continuing to support this. The reason is that this case is being compared with a very similar application in the Ryde area which was flawed and is to be recalled later this year to the planning committee for consideration. I cross my fingers and hope this case will follow suit.
advertising on the railings at Black Hut Green. These adverts are paid for and are certainly a big help towards the finances of the Parish council in order to deliver services locally. Apparently, this is not legal as FPC do not have permission to host advertising banners for private businesses, well they are not going to charge all the charities that advertise on these railings, are they?
I would like to inform you that Freshwater Conservative Club have been on a fundraising campaign towards the end of last year and finally achieved their target to have a defibrillator installed. The fundraising campaign included a Saturday indoor market, a defibrillator quiz and many more events, also a cash donor presented the club with a cheque.
And this gets worse, the complainant also gave FPC seven days to have the banners removed or face a lengthy, time consuming and expensive investigation by the Isle of Wight Council’s enforcement team. Of course, FPC would not intentionally act illegally so they are in the process of applying for the necessary permissions and licences to do so, this will rectify the situation and we can carry on as normal.
The unit is sited just outside the front door at the club in Queens Road, so it is accessible to the public, this is a vital piece of equipment and to have this one added to the existing defibrillators around Freshwater is much needed and useful, especially in this area when needed. Well done all. The planning of our Platinum Celebrations on the 3rd June is still on track and we are adding to the list of stall holders, exhibitors and entertainment very fast. I did ask for this date to be noted in your diaries and you will not be disappointed. The event will take place on Jubilee field, and we expect a good turnout on the day. I was very disappointed to hear that someone complained to Freshwater Parish Council (FPC) about the banners, 12
In normal circumstances, if one became aware that a small Parish Council such as Freshwater are in breach of something one would whisper to them to rectify it before storming in boots and all. The complainant?? I am not one to name names, but our current Parish Council Chairman will enlighten you if you ask. On that note, I will end my short report by wishing you all a very healthy and safe time and I hope that St. Valentine is kind to you all.
George

On your Bike… I last rode a bike in 2009. After the event my husband said never, ever again would he ride with me and promptly put my bike outside the front gate with a “free to good home” sign attached to it. To be honest I was rather pleased as I hated every minute of it… Now fast forward to early 2021. I started having thoughts and daydreams about bikes again but this time electric assist bikes! I researched and researched, and I truly believed this was the answer to all my crazy cycling fantasies.
I can describe the whole experience in just a couple of words… Epic, Amazing, Fantastic to name a few. I was well and truly hooked. 25 miles later I was having the time of my life, albeit it was rocky to start with until I had gotten the hang of it. The electric assist bikes aren’t cheating; you still have to pedal, and the assist only comes in when going up a hill. Even now I hardly ever use the full assist.
Obviously, the only option was to buy our own, and 6 months later I am still loving my bike rides. Surprisingly cycling has not had I presented any detrimental effect on my asthma, in my facts and fact I actually feel there is an findings to improvement. My balance my husband is so much better, and I am (and dog) getting fit while doing it. The and well, only negative I can find is that they said, in theory it sounds good but when we can’t go out on them they also pointed out that I can’t ride due to adverse weather etc I very well, I have severe asthma which miss it really badly. On the is aggravated even by walking, I have weekends we set off with the no sense of balance and suffer from a dog in the trailer and explore bad back. So, we decided before we all areas of our lovely island. commit and buy the bikes, (as let’s be Incidentally, we decided to get folding honest they aren’t cheap and are quite an electric bikes so we could put them in the investment) we should hire some for the day car and drive to more remote locations. to see how it goes. If anybody is thinking about buying an We rented our bikes in the West Wight electric assist bike, I highly recommend area and set off exploring. We even had a them – the island is the perfect place for trailer for the dog, who incidentally insisted them and it’s exercising the fun way and that he wasn’t attached to my bike as he those are two words I never thought could said I was an accident waiting to happen! be used in the same sentence. Freshwater Parish Hall Freshwater Parish Hall was originally a Tithe Barn, probably constructed prior to the 17th century, with random local stone and a thatched roof and with internal curved beams and roof support structure visible. The Rectory Chapel, adjoining, was probably originally constructed in the 17th century, but was later rebuilt with a new altar area, probably in the late 1800’s to the turn of the century, using random stone and dressed stone corner quoins. The Hall is currently used for a variety of commercial and private events for a very moderate fee and by organisations supporting the local community. Organisations vary from singing, dancing and craft clubs to local charities and societies. Bookings vary from weekly to monthly by day or evenings. It can seat up to sixty people comfortably and has a stage. The large spacious fully fitted kitchen is included in the cost if required. Limited parking is available for about six cars, further cars can be parked on the road. Currently for a ‘one off ’ booking the cost is £15.00 per hour and for a regular booking the cost is reduced to £10.00 per hour. Your Local Independent Minibus Service
FEBRUARY 2022
FYTbus continues to run ROUTE A and ROUTE B buses three times EVERY WEEKDAY MORNING.. Timetables are available on our minibuses, and published on our website. They can also be obtained by contacting our office on 01983 752917. Standard adult fare is £2.50 but travel is free if you have a concessionary bus pass. If you have a FYTpass, your fare will be just £1.00 (details of how to apply for the FYTpass are obtainable from our office or on our website - www.fytbus.org.uk ). Our “MEDICAL TRIPS” are available to help you reach appointments in Newport or at Brookside Health Centre, and can be booked on the above phone number or via The Hub at West Wight Sports Centre on 01983 752168. We also have our wheelchair accessible car available to convey a disabled passenger, and their carer if required, on medical trips to doctors, dentists, opticians or hospital, in their own wheelchair. SATURDAY SHOPPING TRIPS to Newport are available at two-weekly intervals for those who are unable to purchase their “essentials” locally. February’s door-todoor shopping trips will be on February 12th and 26th . The return fare is £6.00 and you can book by calling the office number (01983 752917) or visit the FYTbus website. The FYTbus Charity Shop on The Broadway, Totland, has something to suit every pocket. If you’d like to come and look around, the shop is open from 10.00 to 16.00 every weekday, and 10.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays – and the staff will be very pleased to help you. Protecting YOU and our volunteers - Many people in West Wight are now vaccinated against the virus, but we still don't want the people who use or work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching it, so we are continuing to keep our vehicles and our premises as clean as possible, and providing handgel for passengers, shop customers and volunteers to use. We try to follow the Government’s guidelines with regard to distancing and the wearing of face masks which are currently compulsory, aboard our buses, and in our shop. Please help us to keep you safe! Wight Community Access – FYTbus, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay. PO39 0AX Tel: 01983 752917 Web: www.fytbus.org.uk Email: info@fytbus.org.uk
