Dear Readers Welcome to the first issue of 2016 and a Happy New Year to you all. Christmas is now done and dusted for another year and it’s time to get back to normal. I do love it when the Christmas decorations are put up but I think I like it more when they come down. The house always looks so much bigger and like many others I take my down on New Years Day. January is always a quiet month but there are still a couple of events happening on the Island and you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on page 8. This months issue is still packed with news and information including regular reports from Councillors and Parish Councils. The puzzle page is very popular and is a good way to get the brain working again after a hectic Christmas and New Years Eve. Have you set yourself some New Years resolutions? If you have are you likely to stick at them until at least February? Feel free to let me know if you make any, which ones you make and how long you stick to them!!! Until next month...... Best wishes Debbie text or call 07880 587 931 email: islandmagazines@gmail.com twitter @islandmagazines www.islandmagazines.co.uk The editor does not necessarily hold the same views as those expressed by contributors and advertisers and reserves the right to refuse or alter material where necessary. 2

Mulberry Tree Wood Turnery It started off as a hobby in 1997 for Andy Fortune and due to his passion and demand for his skilled work as a turner in 2012 it turned into a full time business and The Mulberry Tree Wood Turnery was born and Andy has now become a Member of the Register of Professional Turners.

All Electrical Work Undertaken Domestic and Commercial Design / Installation / Improvements Home Automation Inspection & Reports Fault finding & Repairs All Types of Lighting Computer Network Cabling

The business started off small in a tiny workshop in Northwood but in 2014 Andy had the opportunity to move to bigger premises at Arreton Barns Craft Village. With these bigger premises came a separate workshop and shop and Andy was able to provide a lot more for local woodworkers and turners and is now the main agent on the Island for Record- Power Tools and Equipment and Chestnut finishing products. The new retail shop attached to his workshop meant that Andy was able to increase the range of items available for resale which include unique bowls, platters and hollow forms. He also sells his products through other shops and galleries on the Island and takes commission work when required for those extra special pieces. The larger workshop has enabled Andy to offer beginners and intermediate bowl turning courses on a one-to-one basis. They have proved very popular with locals and visitors alike. If you are looking for a present for the person who has everything, I bet they haven’t yet had the pleasure of attending one of Andy’s courses which are available as either a half or full day. Both courses have received positive comments from students on Andy’s teaching ability and patience. Feathered Friends The little Robin on the front cover was beautifully captured by Wight Wildlife Photographer Stuart Shore. This picture was taken at Alverstone and I would like to thank Stuart for allowing us to use it to see in the first edition of 2016. Stuart’s reputation is really growing for the wonderful wildlife photos he takes and many people will have seen his wares at Island Craft Fairs recently. You can order prints online direct from his website at www.wightwildlife. co.uk and you will also find out details of the other stockists on the Island to purchase prints from. Stuart also offers tuition and workshops such as ‘Introduction to Wildlife Photography’ and these can be done in groups of 4 or on a 1 to 1 basis. He is also running workshops titled ‘Getting more out of your Camera’ and this is ideal for beginners to learn their way around their camera to ensure they get the best use from it. All workshops are bookable through the website. You can follow Wight Wildlife Photography on Facebook. Please also don’t forget that this is the time of the year when our little feathered friends rely on us the most to keep them fed and watered. Winter is the hardest time of year for all our wildlife to survive due to scarcity of food. Birds require high energy (high fat) foods during the cold weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosts nights. Fat balls [seeds mixed with fat] will be popular additions to your feeding stations and are readily available to buy or you can easily make your own or put out some finely chopped unsalted bacon rind or grated hard cheese to provide energy-rich fat for your birds Some fat balls come in a nylon mesh bag but always remove these because birds get their claws caught in the mesh, causing injury and potentially trapping them.

Rotary

You may remember that I mentioned about the Rotary Shoe Box Appeal in the December issue and I reported that the generous people on the Isle of Wight had donated 499 shoe boxes to be sent to disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Philippines. Well there has been a little bit of confusion and the figure of 499 that was given to me was for the number of boxes donated from residents of East Cowes and Cowes (a few late ones came in after the amount was tallied up so the final figure for East Cowes and Cowes is 514). Listed below are details of the final amounts collected from the drop off points in each town and they accumulate to an amazing 2326. Ryde 537, Sandown 242, Shanklin 97, Godshill 104, Vectis Sunrise (Newport) 514, Ventnor 56 and West Wight 262 12

You may recall that the Chancellor, in his Autumn statement, said that he recognised the financial stresses all councils were facing and that he would allow an extra 2% to help fund social care to be raised through council tax. That would be in addition to the 1.9% that Councils are already able to raise. For the Island Council, it means that if we increase tax by that additional amount we shall raise an extra £1.33 millions.

It’s not much fun being a Councillor at the moment. We all, of whatever party, want to do better for our residents but perforce have to spend most of our effort on damage limitation. Until our national economy moves out of deficit, which is likely to take another 2 to 3 years, things are unlikely to improve.

That sounds as if it will make things a bit easier, but as always there is a sting in the tail. Here on the Island, because of the high proportion of elderly residents that depend on Social Services, our assessed increased demand for next year is in the order of £1.8M.
