Helping A Feathered Friend in Need. What do I do now? or Who do I call? Are the questions in the forefront of anyone’s mind if they have come across an injured bird, whether it be the common garden sparrow or one of the Queens protected swans. The first call should be to Wild Bird Aid which is a local ‘not for profit organisation’ run by Kerstin Voigt and Claire Newsome. Wild Bird Aid specialise in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of native birds. Claire specialises in all native bird species with emphasis on seabirds, pigeons and doves and Kerstin specialises in corvids (ravens, carrion crows, rooks, jays, magpies, jackdaws), birds of prey as well as swallows, martins, nightjars and swifts and all native birds. They will both endeavour to help all bird species, but at the moment they are unable to provide long time care for any birds not listed and will therefore need to get in touch with other rescues on the Island or mainland. Wild Bird Aid at present are caring for approximately 70 birds and everyday they are faced with problems of running an organisation that is so widely used by the local community. The areas in which they really need help is with volunteers to cover a variety of duties but particularly people to help with the transportation of injured birds and ideally they would like to have volunteers in all areas on the Island, so if an injured bird is found, the volunteer can be called upon to collect the bird and bring it to Wild Bird Aid which is based at a private home in Wootton Bridge for assessment and care. Volunteers are also needed to take care of animals in their own home e.g to rear orphaned small song birds, as Wild Bird Aid cannot accommodate all of these at their premises. Training will be provided if needed. They also require volunteers to help with feeding and cleaning and as you can imagine the running costs are very high and they are always happy to receive financial donations or if you have an Amazon account please take a look at the Wild Bird Aid wish list. Fund-raising plays an important role and they are looking for anyone who would like to come aboard to organise fundraising events to help raise the much needed funds. Some birds which are brought to them will obviously need more in depth medical treatment and on many occasion huge vets bills are Are you fed up with your dirty accumulated, one such case recently was the paving? Does your timber need swan that had swallowed a fishing hook and some TLC? We can get it looking therefore vets bills, call out charges, x-rays like new again. and procedures were incurred and these can WE ALSO OFFER run into hundreds of pounds. Kerstin and Claire are passionate about what they do and desperately need your help. For more information please go to their website www.wild-bird-aid.uk and check out the Wild Bird Aid Wish List on Amazon or you can call Claire on 07874 660863 and Kerstin on 07935 487306. 4

Monthly News Report by John Medland IW Councillor for Freshwater South. Tel: 07543 309 219 or email jcmedland@outlook.com As previously reported in these pages these are exciting times for local public services with a major shift of property and power from the bankrupt County Council to Freshwater Parish Council. At the last Parish Council we voted for £60,000 of immediate investments to bring the library building up to the correct standard.

population of Freshwater South in 2011 aged between 20 and 40 had fallen to 13% and that of women to 15% of the total compared to the Island average of around 20%. Therefore the normal position of having a large healthy workforce that can take care of the children and aged is now reversed. Many of the people of working age have to work elsewhere on the Island. The number of children is falling too. As we re-plan and reorganise our public services In 2005 there were six primary schools in the in the West Wight it is worth noting that we are wider West Wight. Many of you will have heard the disappointing news that North Yorkshire County Council granted planning permission for Third Energy to frack their existing well at Kirby Misperton, despite the council receiving over 4,000 objections to the application and only 36 (less than 1%) in favour. For more details on this visit www. frackfreeryedale.org The application was, no doubt, helped by the fact that this well was already in place having been previously drilled as a conventional well, just like here in Arreton. A fact which cannot be emphasised enough to anyone who is reassured by a company stating they are only planning conventional drilling. UKOG, who has been awarded the Isle of Wight licence, have gone to great lengths to portray themselves as being interested only in conventional processes; however this could prove to be a red herring. Many people believe ‘conventional drilling isn’t as bad as fracking’. But this is simply not the case. Frack Free Isle of Wight is determined to ensure that the public is informed of the real facts about oil and gas extraction.

Find out more by joining us at our public meeting on, Tuesday 19th July, at The Wilberforce Hall, Main Road, Brighstone, PO30 4AH. (Car Parking in Warnes Lane). Doors open 6.30pm ready for presentation at 7pm followed by Q & A’ s. Friendly & informal, refreshments available, all welcome. 11

The volunteers of Wight Community Access Ltd (FYTbus) are surprised and delighted that they have been recognised with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service for 2016. This is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities. FYTbus provides scheduled and nonscheduled minibus services to several communities in West Wight linking their residents with local retail, health, social and leisure facilities, improving their quality of life and independence. The awards were created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and winners are announced each year on 2nd June. The Lord Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Major General Michael White CB CBE JP, will present the Award Certificate to the FYTbus volunteers at an event on 9th July. Thank you to all our volunteers, our passengers and everyone who has helped us to achieve this un-looked-for but warmly welcomed award.
