June 2016

Dear Readers Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. I can’t believe that close to half the year has gone already. I’m loving these light evenings and there is no better place to be then here on the Island, especially if the sun is shining. We have had a few really nice hot days recently, as well as a few miserable ones too, but lets hope that once summer is finally here the sun will shine every day. The Island will be getting ready for the Isle of Wight Festival in June and there will be celebrations happening across the Island to mark the occasion of the Queens 90th Birthday. There are many other events happening too and you will find details of them all in the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 10 and 11. If you are holding or know of an upcoming event please drop me an email so we can include it in the next issue. I hope you enjoy reading this months issue and catching up on all the latest news and information happening in the community. Until next month...

Break the Cycle Community Interest Company has been set up to help and support survivors of domestic abuse to move forward with their lives now they have escaped from an abusive relationship and are living independently. Weeks, months and years afterwards, a domestic abuse survivor, although away from the violence, can still live a life mentally imprisoned by the trauma they have experienced. Many reporting a deep sense of self doubt and feelings of uselessness and insecurity about the future. When talking to men and women who would potentially take part in the program, many spoke of a need for support to forgive themselves for being victims of abuse and overcome a lack of self worth so they were able to have a better outcome in life for not only themselves but their children also. The six module programme is designed to fill the gap between agency provision and social care. While external agencies support these men and women to build external aspects of recovery, ‘Mind the Gap’ will work with the internal aspects of recovery supporting participants to not only come to terms with their experience but live a fulfilled life past the experience too. The three directors, Maggie Currie, Kelvin Currie and Ian McLaughlin, aim to be working with a diverse range of men and women coming from all ethnicities and backgrounds. There will be no restriction to participating in the program for beneficiaries. We will be using a range of training material that Complete Property Maintenance complements each participant’s learning for your Home and Garden style. The sessions will also be interactive and engaging to allow the participants to learn through practice and experience vs theory.

Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. I wrote last month that the new rubbish collections appeared to be going smoothly. For most people they were and have, but that’s no comfort if you are one of those where it hasn’t. The main problem appears to be that the new contractor seriously underestimated the number of queries that would be raised. When changes are made to 70,000 households, even a few percent is thousands. And because there was just a single telephone number, people were waiting for ages for response. One resident reported 40 minutes! Many of the problems arose because the assessment for a wheelie bin or a gull proof sack was just a cursory check and residents who, at the previous change when green wheelie bins were brought in, had got agreement that they were unsuitable because of storage space, steps etc., found that this had been disregarded and they suddenly had a black wheelie bin when sacks were the best choice.

Government’s proposed new policy of making housing associations sell their properties. The reason we have rented properties is because not everyone can afford to buy. Selling them off reduces the stock, and the choice and means that the waiting list will just get longer. If houses have to be sold at a discount, there isn’t the money to build more to replace them. And often there isn’t the space. And why would a housing association then want to build more houses if someone moving into a new one then has the right to buy it. A huge number of houses on the Island are bought by people moving here from the mainland and this will simply provide more open market houses for sale. We already have plenty of those. What we are desperately short of is affordable rented housing for local people.

If the Government wants to help more people into owning their own homes, then why not make a proportion of rented housing available for shared equity. That means that tenants can buy a share in the property, There are also reports that for many and over the years as the house increases households, the black wheelie bins are too in value, so does their share and they small. Some other Councils have provided black bins of the same size as the green bins. accumulate enough capital for a deposit on a There are difficulties too, especially for frail private house of their own, then freeing the rented house for another tenant. residents, in simply lifting the black plastic container for paper and card, into the bin. The previous right to buy policy introduced OK for a young and fit refuse collector, not easy for the elderly. Councillors in charge of in 1980 was a mess and had unintended consequences, mainly by creating a real the contract have been made aware of the issues, and are discussing a remedy with the shortage of council houses to rent. This new contractor. I hope that by the time you read policy isn’t any better. I know that many this, most of the queries and re-assessments Conservative Councillors share my misgivings and I hope we can persuade government to will be complete. think again. Turning to another thorny subject, Housing, I have to say that although I’m a Conservative Stuart Hutchinson Councillor, I completely disagree with the 6

The Perfect Summer Cake I’ve been slaving over a hot stove trying to find a quick and easy cake recipe… I’ve tried and tested it several times and although its edible and tastes nice, I’ll admit it’s not the best cake I have ever made, but, and here is the good news, there are only 2 ingredients involved and one of them is ice cream and who doesn’t like ice cream. The other ingredient is self raising flour. The good thing with this cake is you can use any flavour ice cream but preferably full fat. I have tried it with low fat and dairy free but they just aren’t right – you can’t have a low fat cake, its just not right. The two ingredients you need are 175g of self raising flour and 1 pint of melted ice cream. Turn on the oven to 180°C and line a loaf tin with parchment paper. Sieve the flour into a bowl and add the melted ice cream and whisk or beat away. I used an electric whisk just to make it a bit easier. Make sure the two ingredients are combined and then pour into the loaf tin and bake for 35-40 minutes. If you want to get creative, before you pour into the loaf tin you can add any little extras such as chocolate chips or nuts and you’ll need about 75g of these. As before ensure they are mixed through evenly and bake as normal. Every oven is different and you can check if its cooked all the way through by using a skewer or knife in the centre of the cake and just make sure it comes out clean. If you think the top is cooking too fast you can always cover with some foil. Once cooked, leave to cool slightly and then turn out and enjoy a slice of ice cream cake or ice cream loaf, depends what you want to call it and for those that really like to indulge SUNDAY AT THREE like myself serve with a generous scoop of 3pm Sunday 19 June ice cream on the side. FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL I have just come to the end of my first year as Chair of Freshwater Parish Council and am proud to be re-elected for the next year with Councillor Gill Kennett as Vice Chair! I welcome a new Parish Councillor, Tim Nicholson, who you may know through his excellent work with FBRA.

The Last Great Event by Ray Foulk, Festival organiser “ I took my place on the front row where Rikki had saved me a seat. Facing me was a platform of establishment big-wigs and the organisers of the Wootton Ratepayers’ fraternity. A sea of familiar - and mostly friendly - faces greeted my gaze, punctuated by a heavy smattering of older locals.” The famous public meetings at Freshwater Memorial Hall decided the fate of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival. With around a third of the audience undecided, the animated debate swayed the fate of the Festival and saved the Festival from the Island establishment intent upon stopping the event. In this exhibition, festival organiser Ray Foulk exhibits some of the fantastic photographs from the meetings. See friends and family members who attended in this free exhibition commemorating the Island’s decision to support the Festival. Join us in the evening for a talk by Ray Foulk who will reminisce on the events of the meeting and will be signing copies of his new book, The Last Great Event with Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison. This memoir of the 1970 Isle of Wight Festival delves into the politics of Island life and explores the early careers of musical legends such as the Who and Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
