In this issue we continue to look and find ways of helping each other along the difficult path that today’s living brings to so many of us. This month is about feeding the family for under £3 and these recipes will hopefully become a firm favourite. Next month we will be looking at ways to reduce food waste by making your vegetables go further, with suggestions for making edible use of peelings and skins.
TOP TIP Use the kettle to boil water quickly and transfer to pan on hob for boiling vegetables and pasta.
TOP TIP
Get rid of ants with cucumber peel – place strips of peel along their entry point – they don’t like it – not toxic, not expensive.

This issue also marks that we are halfway through the year already. How is your year going so far? Did you set yourself plans at the beginning of the year and have they happened or are they on the back burner? One of my plans this year was to spend more time outdoors, having great adventures on my bike, exploring the island on two wheels, and enjoying regular stops at local cafes and tearooms... sadly due to one thing and another this hasn’t happened so far, but I am not giving up and I hope to have those two wheels in motion very soon.

www.adriankensit.co.uk Probably the biggest news for June is the adrian.kensit@btinternet.com Platinum Jubilee - it seems that communities across the island are coming together and have been planning all types of events, from picnics in the park, to crafts and markets, live music, and much more. If you are holding a street party, I hope you have a great day and feel free to send me any pictures of your event.
This month’s issue is packed as normal, with news, advertisers, puzzles, and features. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and look forward to catching up with you again next month, until then have a fabulous June.

News Update from John Medland Freshwater South
Mill Road Garage Tel: 01983 760436
The near four-year deadlock over the final repairs to the Causeway caused by conflicting policies of the IW Council and Island Roads has finally been resolved. There had been conflicting policy regarding conservation verses engineering safety which were finally resolved in February. On Friday May 13th I held a meeting with Keith Gourlay, the Island Roads Construction Manager, and Councillor Peter Spink on site. Peter and I were delighted to learn that the tarmac will remain as it is and that work will begin to install ‘like for like’ oak posts and rail with a raised seaward bank. The work is due to start on June 6th and is expected to last for three weeks. During this time the road will be closed with some limited access for local properties.

All the batteries collected by the crews will be placed in a special box fitted to the collection vehicles and sent for sorting and processing. To ensure the batteries are kept separate to other household general waste, batteries should be placed safely and separately on top of your closed black bin or gull-proof sack in their own clear sandwich sized bag. You can recycle small batteries of all shapes via the scheme. These typically include: • AA • AAA • Small round (watch type batteries) • Square batteries • Old rechargeable household batteries Batteries must always be removed from electrical items before being collected. Large batteries such as laptop/phone/power tool batteries and car batteries or items where the batteries cannot be removed should be taken to your nearest Household Waste Recycling Centre. 5
News Report from Cllr Chris Jarman - Totland & Colwell Tel: 07905 002834/Email ChrisJarmanforTotland@gmail.com One year on the job. The anniversary of my election as IWC Councillor for Totland and Colwell Ward. A time for reflection for all that has been achieved so far and to look forward to all that is still to be done. I could not have found a more worthy local endeavour or one that would afford such an opportunity to support my close neighbours and residents. Addressing the financial, organisational and logistical challenges of the IWCouncil has made great progress, but like the many ups and downs of Walk the Wight that I completed last Sunday, it is a marathon and not a sprint. Spring in the West Wight is always to be savoured and admired. Our natural beauty and abundant wildlife remind us of why so many have chosen this part of the Island to be their home, but also of the fragility of that landscape and its susceptibility to being overwhelmed. Each of the wildflowers emerges in due time, our institutions meet with renewed vigour planning for summer events and every Totland and Freshwater allotment resounds to the sounds of digging and the smell of gently drifting bonfire smoke. Despite all the horrors that Covid threw at our community we have emerged determined to carry on together. Much effort locally is now focussed on preparing for the Jubilee celebrations. Students at College are hard at work fabricating the 5 Jubilee beacons to run from Compton to the Needles; steel donated by DMR Engineering being wrought to hold the light of the fires celebrating 70 years reign of our Majesty. 6
Wood arriving (more is still needed) donated by local businesses and from tree clearances at private homes ready to be ignited on 2nd June. Local young people challenged to complete the filling of the Jubilee Beacons as their contribution to the event and hence to award of their Jubilee Celebration Badges. And, not forgetting the bagpiper ready and waiting to echo her haunting melodies over Tennyson Down. Our Jubilee Beacons are though but one of the many plans afoot as we have a 4-day holiday to fill. We shall enjoy a musical spectacular and fair in Freshwater, street parties in Totland and a bumper Jubilee car-boot sale in Colwell. There are hosts of fund-raising events to temp our participation and BBQs arranged for those still with energy on the Sunday whilst watching the events unfold in London. For probably everyone alive today this will be a unique event in their lives, as it is for our Country and our monarchy.

June Gardening Tips & Encouraging Birds to the Garden We are approaching summer and now is the time we can sit out and enjoy the garden. You should see adult birds gathering food for fledglings right into the evening. Most garden birds, even the seed-eating finches, tend to feed their young on insects at this time of year. You may notice birds taking caterpillars or insect larvae off to the nest, before returning to boost their own energy levels from the bird table or feeder. In hot weather, avoid putting out dry food such as stale bread, as this can hasten dehydration. Always chop nuts or use a feeder, as whole nuts can choke baby birds. Birds need water for drinking and bathing. Make sure you have water available especially in dry, hot weather during summer when water can be hard to find. If you are enjoying spending the light evenings in your garden, there are still plenty of jobs that need doing to keep it looking its best and to be a magnet for birds.

If your garden has dense cover, such as thick hedges, you may attract summer visitors, such as the willow warbler and chiffchaff, which breed from May to July. All the warblers are shy birds and can be difficult to spot. If you get tiny pests such as aphids on your plants, it’s best to avoid spraying, as pesticides will also kill ladybirds and other helpful insects. Many birds, such as tits, will eat insect pests. If greenfly or aphids become a real concern, you can wash them off with a dilute solution of washing-up liquid. • • • • • •
Trim box or privet if it is growing rapidly, but first check there are no nesting birds Prune spring flowering shrubs such as lilac, spiraea, forsythia and broom as soon as they have finished flowering Give spring flowering meadows their first cut at the end of this month Spread a mulch of compost or shredded bark around trees, shrubs and roses when the soil is moist Plant up containers and hanging baskets with annuals Sow vegetable crops, such as a lettuce mix, or courgettes directly into the soil, and try some in large pots

Report from George Cameron - Freshwater Here we go, in warmer weather as it should be for this time of year. I hope that you have all settled now that WightFibres activity has slowed down a bit, albeit there is still a lot to do in this area, my sources have informed me. I am still being contacted frequently about the state they leave the areas where they worked and I am advising everyone to contact their local councillor to take up their plight, they are in a position where they can help. JUBILEE WEEKEND 3rd JUNE: Just another reminder of the Jubilee event on Jubilee field next to West Wight Sports Centre on the 3rd June. The event will start at 11:00 and close at 8:00pm. Bring your family along and enjoy the day, look out for the Stevo and Kai show, they are truly fantastic.
very big thank you to all those who donated so much to this cause, you have done us proud. Victoria says: “We work towards this vision by developing and executing programs in the Republic of Moldova, the poorest country in Europe. We started with the Medical Aid Delivery program. The program facilitates the transfer of high-quality equipment no longer needed by British hospitals (NHS) to hospitals in dire need of improvement. At the same time, it helps the UK hospitals save the cost of storage or disposal of equipment they no longer need. We went on to establish and operate a UK-standard modern day care and early intervention and rehabilitation centre for children and teenagers with special needs. We aim to Make A Difference”.
I was recently invited by Victoria Dunford BEM who is the founder and Chief Executive of MAD-Aid as a guest to the opening of their new shop in East Cowes. It was a heart-warming experience to see how hard the team worked to get the aid and supplies to Ukraine There are still to support the people of that lots needed and country that has suffered so I list this below much already. I would like to for you, but thank Victoria, her team of money is also VICTORIA AND JOHN DUNFORD volunteers and Trustees for all needed to get the work they have done to date, the Lorries and this is continuing. But, another big over to Ukraine to deliver the aid and supporter of Victoria is her husband donations. John who is her rock and without John, • Baby milk formula Victoria’s job would have been so much • Pampers all sizes harder. A lot of donations originate from • Feminine hygiene products the West Wight, hence writing about this in • Underwear for children & women this month’s report. Totland Parish Council News We start by congratulating Councillor Jan Cave who has been elected as Chairman for this year with support from Councillor Gareth Wyre who was elected as Vice Chairman. Jubilee Celebrations At the time of writing this update the two beacons are almost ready to be installed on the West Highdown and Needles by the team at the Isle of Wight College. The lighting of these beacons will take place on Thursday 2nd June at around 9pm. WightFibre We have received a number of complaints regarding works being carried out by WightFibre and the Parish Office are arranging a meeting with supervisors to discuss and sort these problems. Ward Councillor Chris Jarman is also dealing with various complaints as well. We have been informed that these works are being carried out on behalf of the Government and not the Isle of Wight Council or Island Roads. However, Island Roads will be responsible after 18 months of works completed so it is in their best interest to sort any problems at the time. Grant – Welcome Back Fund We were awarded a welcome back fund through the Isle of Wight Council and have been granted 4 park benches and 4 picnic benches. These will be installed in various locations on Parish land.

Interesting Facts and Historical Events for June June is a time when summer is really starting to get into full swing! Every day lasts just that little bit longer. There are multiple theories as to what the month of June was named after. One theory is that it was named after the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. Another theory is that its name originates from the Latin word iuniores, which translates into “younger ones”. Yet another possibility is that the month was named after Lucius Junius Brutus, the founder of the Roman Republic. June was called ‘sera’ monath by the Anglo-Saxons, which translated into “dry month”. June used to be the fourth month in the year. Before Julius Caesar came to power, the calendar year only had 10 months. In 46 BC he created the Julian calendar by adding two more months to the year, which made June the sixth month. No other month in the year begins on the same day of the week as June. June has both the longest and the shortest day of the year ( June 21st), and depends on whether you live in the Northern or Southern hemisphere. Television licences were issued in Britain for the first time on 1 June 1946; they cost £2 If you were born on or before June 20th, then you’re a Gemini. Geminis are said to be passionate, adaptable, and smart. If you’re born on or after the 21st of June, though, then you have the Cancer star sign. Those born under this sign are said to be loyal friends with great emotional depth. June was apparently not very popular with William Shakespeare, as it was only referenced in two of his famous plays – Cleopatra, and Henry IV. The birth flowers of June are the honeysuckle and the rose. Both of these flowers are symbols of all things relating to love, desire, generosity, and affection. If you’re a big fan of tennis Wimbledon begins on June 27th. June has three birthstones – alexandrite, moonstone, and pearl. Alexandrite is said to represent longevity and health. Moonstones are said to bring good luck and are associated with love and passion. Finally, pearls, the main birthstones of June represent purity and faith. June 3rd, 1937, The Duke of Windsor married Wallis Warfield Simpson in Monts, France. As King Edward VIII, he had abdicated the British Throne in December of 1936 amid tremendous controversy to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had been divorced. Following the wedding, the couple lived in France and had minimal contact with the British Royal family. The Duke died in Paris on May 28th 1972 and was buried near Windsor Castle. 18
