May 2016
Dear Readers Welcome to the May issue and thank you for picking up a copy. This months issue is once again packed with local community news and information. The Island is springing to life again and there are plenty of events happening in May and you’ll find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ on pages 16 and 17. In this months issue you will also find a recipe on page 4 which has been tried and tested by myself and these biscuits were a big hit. They are very easy to make and can be enjoyed with a nice cup of tea whilst doing the puzzles on page 8. Whilst writing this the sun is shining, I’m not sure how long for though but lets hope its here to stay so we can start enjoying our beautiful Island and some of the great walks and outdoor activities it has to offer. Please keep using the services of the advertisers and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. Until next month... Debbie

Homemade Ginger Biscuits I came across this recipe recently on social media. It was shared by a friend of a friend of a friend!!!! I do love a ginger biscuit and normally settle for a shop brought packet as I have never tried making them before. These are very easy to make and taste lovely the only problem with them is I have made them three times now and each time they have come out differently. The first batch had a nice sharp crispness to them with a beautiful snap that even Mary Berry would be proud of. The second batch were softer and more like a cookie but just as nice and the third batch was really gooey and chewy and I felt like it gave my mouth a good workout which again is no bad thing. I hope you enjoy making them and let me know how yours turn out as it will be interesting to see… Ingredients 113g soft brown/golden sugar 100g butter or margarine 2 tablespoons of golden syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger (I used about 3 as I do like a ginger taste) 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 227g self raising flour Heat oven to 190°C. In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarb and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking. Bake for 15 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly in the tray then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy with a nice cup of tea….

Monthly News Report by John Medland IW Councillor for Freshwater South. Tel: 07543 309 219 or email jcmedland@outlook.com I am deeply encouraged that my petition to keep a local postal sorting office and the excellent delivery service of our trusted local postal deliverers has attracted over a thousand signatures in just four weeks! I hope this will convince Royal Mail that there is a need to keep our postal system local. We are facing challenging times. Central government cuts are affecting all local services including the police and public health services. The IW Council faces bankruptcy in a matter of months. The “Fight for the Wight” campaign needs to convince the Treasury that the Island has particular cost issues related to us living on an island with a relatively low income but with a particularly high ageing population.
The IW Council is also leasing most of the former Youth and Community Centre to the Sports Centre which is now known as the WW Sports and Community Centre. This will now be made available for local community organisations such as the ‘Just Ask’ initiative of the Parish Council to create a new community information service to link local people to all the public initiatives and services being provided by charities and local voluntary organisations. The IW Council is retaining the rear rooms of the former Youth and Community Centre to provide a base for the West Wight Children’s Centre working with young families. This is being run by the Barnardos charity.
The freehold of Freshwater Library is also being transferred to the Parish Council. The As of April 1st Freshwater Parish Council has IW Council will continue to provide a basic statutory service with access to books and taken direct ownership and control of the information and a part time professional public toilets at Moa Place and Freshwater Bay which would otherwise have been closed. librarian. • Improved fitness
Monthly News Report by John Medland • Achieve realistic weight/fat loss Personally I welcome the transfer of public powers from County Hall to local bodies. I believe organisations like the volunteer managed Parish Council are better at running local public assets. We face challenging times. To make the most benefit from the opportunities they offer we need more community-minded volunteers from litter pickers to charitable trustees. Do you have an hour a week or a month to offer your labour or particular skill? If so please get in touch.

Totland Parish Council News
Public Toilet; The Parish Council has been responsible for the cleaning of the two public toilets, Totland Beach and Colwell Bay since 1st April 2016 and we are pleased to report that Island Cleaning Solutions, our contractors, have started very well and deep cleaned them at the beginning of April and will again at the beginning of every month. Councillors have accepted a quotation to add extra lighting to Totland Beach and to carry out minor maintenance including repainting. This should all be completed by the end of June. Any problems please report to the Parish Office. Open Spaces; The areas around Totland are still sodden but with the warmer weather on its way the Committee are hoping this will resolve soon. Turvills Field will be brush cut as soon as the field dries out as well. The hedges on Turf Walk were cut in February and are looking well kept. Work around the badger holes again on Turf Walk is hoping to commence in July, however, the council needs to obtain a licence before this work begins. New signs have been erected on the Recreation Ground and minor repairs have been carried out on the playbuilder and gym equipment. A new dog bin will be installed this month at the top of Widdick Chine and this is being funded by the parish council after residents had requested one to stop people leaving bags in the area. Not picking up after your dog is an offence and spot checks are being carried out by the Environmental Officers regularly.
Events; As reported last month Colwell Common is looking to host up to 13 car boot events this year between 1st June and 30th September. We are looking for a group to run this event and work with the Parish Council, so if you know of any groups looking for fundraising ideas this year please contact the Clerk for more information. Dairy Dates: May & June - Best Kept Village Awards will be judged during May and June this year.
Saturday 25th June - Totland Recreation Ground will be used for another Fun Day run by the 1st Freshwater and Totland Scouts group. Saturday 27th August - Art & Craft on Turf Walk will be back this year. Please contact the Clerk if you would like a stall. Saturday 27th August - Messy Church will be hosting an event on Colwell Common. Reminder: Afton Marsh Recycling Centre is open to the public as follows: • Three days a week; Saturday, Sunday and Monday, including bank holiday Mondays. • Summer 7.00am to 8.00pm. (27 March 2016 to 30 October 2016) West Wight Arts Association – The Annual General Meeting is Saturday 7th May 2016 at 7pm in the Memorial Hall. The short meeting will be followed by a piano recital, after which cheese and wine will be served. CONTACT DETAILS: Parish Clerk – Mrs Helen Gibbs - Telephone 756028. Totland Parish Council, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay, PO39 0AX. The parish office is open Monday - Thursday 9am–12 noon. Email: totlandparishco@googlemail.com or follow the Clerk on Twitter @TotlandClerk You can also keep up to date with news on our Facebook page. Ward Councillor John Howe Telephone 753414 or email: john.howe@iow.gov.uk Ward Councillor Surgeries will be held third Thursday of each month; 21st April, 19th May, 16th June and 21st July, 11am – 12noon. All Totland residents are welcome to come and talk to the Ward Councillor. The Parish Council meet on the 2nd Wednesday of each month, except August, and all Totland residents are welcome.

Fast forward a year! By Maggie Currie How would you like to see yourself in a year’s time? Would it be the same as now, or with slight changes or a whole new look? In a year’s time I see for me: • My relationship with myself looks pretty good at the moment. I treat myself with respect and gratitude and take notice of the good thoughts and endeavour to ignore the not so good thoughts. • My thoughts are generally positive but occasionally a negative thought will creep in. • My relationship with my husband is fantastic, we love and respect each other and make each other laugh. • My relationship with my mother is good, we see each other fairly regularly, although my father is no longer with us, he is always in my heart and mind. • My relationship with my daughter and grandchildren is very good. • My physical health is pretty good, I am slightly overweight and making an effort to change this and I currently feel great. • My finances are reasonably okay, but could of course be a lot better. Bank account is in the black. • My business world consists of coaching, PHYSICAL EXHAUSTION I am self-employed and an entrepreneur. I TOXIC RELATIONSHIPS am the business. I am starting a new project LOW MORALE soon which is very exciting and will hopefully STRESS impact a large number of people. Initially, FYT bus was started with local Parish Councils finance from Freshwater, Yarmouth, Totland and Shalfleet. The initials were used to name the FYT bus service. This bus service has been operating for 4 years through the bringing together of local volunteers and grants obtained from the Lottery Fund. Two of the existing buses are now 8 years old and the new ones will be direct replacements for them. Delivery was taken from the suppliers a few weeks ago and some small modifications have been made to suit FYT bus services. The new buses are 14 seat capacity as before, they have cleaner engines and will offer passengers a comfortable ride on significantly improved journeys in the West Wight. 14

Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. The changed rubbish collection arrangements seem to have been going remarkably smoothly so far. There are 70,000 households to service and the delivery of the black wheelie bins and sacks was rolled out from west to east, so here in west wight we were the first to see the change. There have of course been some glitches. Most of the ones reported to me have been where black wheelie bins are not needed, or are unsuitable for the premises. I have passed details of all those residents who have contacted me to the contractor, Amey, with a request for re-assessment. Some have said that the black bin will not be big enough for the amount of non-recycle rubbish they have over a fortnight. Amey proposed this size as it has worked well elsewhere. As the recycling centres’ ability to reprocess and recycle waste improves year on year, some of the kinds of waste, like tetrapaks and packaging made of multiple materials, that couldn’t be recycled, now can be, or will be in the very near future. It’s in all of our interests if, with a bit of effort, items can be crushed or separated so that more can go in the green bins. Surveys have shown that, on average, around a third of waste that used to go in the black sacks can go in the recycle bins or sacks. The tax on non-recycled waste has just increased again and the Council, to put it’s own waste in it’s own tips, now has to pay the government £84 a ton. That costs us about £2 millon a year. If we could recycle more and get that cost down to half it could, for instance, pay for all 18
libraries to be kept open, or pay the annual cost of maintaining and cleaning all the Island’s public toilets, or even allow for the return of the lost bus routes, with an increase in service frequency. Do please do the best you can. We recognise that, with the best will in the world, larger households will struggle to manage with the smaller bins, especially if they have been used to putting out 3 or 4 black sacks every fortnight. Large households with several children, or where there is a clinical need, can apply to be re-assessed and if they can show extra need, a 240 litre black bin will be provided instead of the 140 litre one. On other issues, you may be aware that the County Press, with the support of the Council and others, is running a “Fight for the Wight” campaign, providing a collection of news and articles to demonstrate that we really do need some help from government to enable essential services to be provided. We have invited the Secretary of State for Local Government to visit the Island, perhaps in May or June. As the Conservative Group’s lead Member on budget issues, I shall be looking to personally discuss with him the real issues we have as a small county authority on an offshore Island. As always, I’m here to help with Council issues in any way I can.
