Welcome to the May issue of Island Magazines. Another month has rolled by, and we have had some lovely sunny days, especially over the Easter weekend. There were many visitors to the Island who had the pleasure of experiencing what we have right on our doorstep. Do you sometimes forget how lucky we are to live here? I know I do... With another Bank Holiday due at the beginning of May let’s hope the sun is here to stay and then it seems the whole Island is getting ready for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June. I hope you enjoy this month’s issue which is packed with news and information along with some regular features and of course the puzzle section on pages 10 and 11 which I understand have become very popular. A new feature starting in this issue, and which will be running for the foreseeable future is the ‘Humble Crumble Kitchen’ and you will find this on page 6. Our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13 offer a wide range of events happening across the Island for everyone to enjoy. Please always feel free to contact me if you have any news to share or would like any further information on anything featured in this issue. I hope you all have a great month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

Report from George Cameron - Freshwater Today I need to remind you all again about our Jubilee event which takes place on Friday 3rd June on Jubilee field next to West Wight sports and Community Centre. Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee after 70 years of service. It is a celebration which we will only see once in a lifetime so come and join us and make the most of the day. We have lots of entertainment along with stalls and lots to do for the whole family especially for children. Look out for Derek Sandy who will be on stage at some point in the afternoon, there will be food stalls, a beer tent and arts and crafts. A fantastic raffle will take place which includes a meal voucher for £250.00 kindly donated by The Hut. Most local businesses donated towards the prizes, and we would like to thank them for supporting their local community. One act to look out for is Stevo & Kai who are a fantastic father and son act who will be on site for most of the day. Our Lord Lieutenant Suzie Sheldon will officially open the event at eleven o’clock. Stevo & Kai are all round family entertainers with a whole variety act fun for all the family mixing their incredible skills together for a full fun pack live show experience not to be missed that has taking them all round the world, on and off television, plus Stevo & Kai was just Awarded “international family 4
entertainers of the year award 2021” as well. On another note, I am pleased to learn that the West Wight have now formed a pub watch scheme. Schemelink is a national scheme, and the Isle of Wight has joined them with each area managed separately. The first meeting took place at The Wheatsheaf in Yarmouth and most establishments joined up to now, it is envisaged that all West Wight pubs will join the scheme. I remember when such a scheme was in place a few years ago which was led by our then police sergeant who was very local community focussed, it was successful for a few years but fell apart because landlords change over time and of course they look at things differently. The new Schemelink is more sophisticated and confidential with the backing of the Government, but it will only work if everyone joins and act on advice properly. Hopefully it will make some drinking and eating places more enjoyable for everyone and not having to worry about any problems arising from some undesirables. Till next time, enjoy our warmer weather and we will definitely see you on Jubilee field on Friday 3rd June. George.

Tramp in the Woods Living on an island we are spoiled for choice with local wildlife, and nothing beats the sighting of a red squirrel and it’s thanks to local photographer Tramp Woods that I can have the pleasure of sharing this one on the front cover. Dave Krowson AKA The Tramp (Tramp Woods) moved to the island after a sudden change in his life and after spending many hours sitting in the woods waiting for the opportunity to capture these beauties his friend nicknamed him Tramp in the Woods. The name stuck and has now been adapted into an online trademark through Instagram and Facebook.

Tramps favourite subject is the red squirrel and over the past 2 years he has been photographing all species of wildlife and is in the process of finishing his book, ‘Life Thru the Lens’, which will showcase an array of pictures taken by himself and he hopes that the book will be enjoyed by all ages and may encourage others to get involved with our wildlife in whatever form they feel. 5

Totland Parish Council News Public Toilets Since April 2016 Totland Parish Council has maintained the public toilets at Totland Bay and Colwell Bay. Both these blocks are old, however, the buildings themselves remain in good condition. The Colwell Bay toilets are used by over 50,000 people every year from local people to holiday makers with Totland Bay reaching around half this. After the summer of 2022 Parish Councillors have agreed to update the Colwell block and change them into individual cubicles. Drawings to redevelop this site are in hand and they will include an accessible cubicle along with three unisex cubicles one with a baby changing facility.

News Report from Cllr Chris Jarman - Totland & Colwell Tel: 07905 002834/Email ChrisJarmanforTotland@gmail.com Being on the extreme Western end of our beautiful Island does bring its rewards of extraordinary scenery, open vistas, towering cliffs and sea views. It also sometimes feels as though we are the forgotten part of the Island with completely inadequate sewage capacity, frequent storm water overflow discharges and surrounded by sacrificial coastline on all fronts. The wet winter and spring coupled with some spectacular tides and storms have wrought their inevitable damage, again. Our Coastal Path is diverted East of Colwell Bay by the destruction of steps and the undercutting of the slipway, further ‘clay’ slides are evident at numerous points from Brambles to Alum Bay and our poor-quality road surfaces seem to erode within months of being re-coated. One has the feeling that were nature to be left to its own devices, the West Wight would be the first to return to its natural wild state. Nevertheless, local opportunists continue to press forward with housing developments on every possible green space with those from the mainland eager to make the relocation over the Solent or to add to portfolios of rental and Airbnb properties. The tide of house building has two emerging potentials to confound the expansion – one is the work in progress to define our own Island Planning Strategy and the second is the much-anticipated national redirection of priorities in the promised changes by Gove MP. It is unclear which will emerge first and what the implications of each will be to our Island in general and to our Western 14
Peninsular in particular. The former was delayed this week to allow reflection on the significant number of comments regarding the draft and the latter should be with us at the start of the new parliament this Autumn/Winter. Both will define the course of our Island for decades to come. There are though many infrastructure challenges that we face in the West in common with elsewhere on the Island. Foremost at present, and the number one complaint, is the endless digging up of our newly laid pavements and roads for fibre cables. Unlike some of our advanced continental relations, we do not have easy access under pavement walkways for water, waste and cabling. Our strategy is to give each utility the right to close roads, divert pavements and dig largely where they desire. Only to find out that a few weeks later another utility repeats the exercise. It causes huge delays, monumental costs and blocks my email with justified complaints. Time for some smart thinking in Westminster to finally put an end to this breath-taking inefficiency. I should declare an interest here, as, like just about every Totland, Colwell and Freshwater resident, I find myself pondering the absurdity of the current approach sitting at strings of traffic lights on every attempted journey.
Interesting Facts and Historical Events for May The name May is the modern-day English adaption of the Latin word Maius, which has origins going back to the time of the ancient Greeks. They named the month of May (or Maius) after the Greek goddess of growth. May used to have a very different name in Old English. Back then, the month was referred to as the “month of three milkings.” Unsurprisingly, this meant that during this month, you could milk your cows up to three times per day! May was once considered an incredibly ill-omened time to get married. There’s an adage for it actually, which goes: “Marry in May and you’ll rue the day.” It’s not clear where exactly the saying comes from, but there must have been a pretty good reason not to get married in one of the most beautiful months of the year! May isn’t just a bad time to get married, though. There’s one superstition that says that buying a new broom in May is unlucky. Oh, and apparently, you shouldn’t wash any blankets either! May is a pretty good month for US presidents. Every other month of the year, at least one US president has died, but never in May! May is the month that the Eurovision song contest is held every year and has been held every year since 1956 (with the exception of 2020). May is a special time for Star Wars fans worldwide. May the 4th is celebrated as Star Wars day, due to the way the date sounds similar to “May the Force be with you”. The Empire State Building formally opened its doors on May 1, 1931. At the point of its construction, it held the record for being the tallest building in the world. Many other sky-high constructions have since dwarfed it. Back in the day, it wasn’t a good May if you didn’t celebrate it with a maypole. In the UK, they were present since at least 1350 AD. Celebrants would erect a long pole and attach flowers, garlands, and strips of fabric to it, around which certain dances would take place. The birthstone for May is the emerald symbolising fertility and rebirth and May has two birth flowers – the Lily-of-the-Valley and the Hawthorn. The Hawthorn flower is a symbol of hope, while the Lily-of-the-Valley represents the return of happiness and sweetness. May also has two Zodiac signs, Taurus and Gemini. People born under the sign of Taurus are said to be ambitious and smart, yet trustworthy. Those born under the sign of Gemini are said to be passionate, adaptable, and smart. Many famous people were born in May, such as Queen Victoria, and Catherine the Great, Mark Zuckerberg, Karl Marx, Clint Eastwood, Wes Anderson and John F. Kennedy, Source: thefactsite.com
News Report from Cllr Peter Spink Freshwater North & Yarmouth Peter.Spink@iow.gov.uk In an unexpected turnaround the Draft Island Planning Strategy was withdrawn just hours before it was due to be considered by the Corporate Scrutiny Committee on Tuesday. The official withdrawal was announced by Cllr Paul Fuller, Cabinet Member for Planning at the meeting. Cllr Fuller said that it had been made clear by a number of councillors that the plan required further work. I agree, but it is to be regretted that it has taken so long for that to be recognised. One of the unfortunate consequences of adjourning the plan is that the Island will remain in the so-called ‘tilted balance’ which takes away some of the powers of the planning committee. This has been imposed by the Government in response to the Island not meeting housing targets and not having a five-year land supply. The Island is far from being alone in this; more than 50 local authorities are in the same position. The Isle of Wight Council is to contact those authorities, and together, to lobby Michael Gove MP to lift the tilted balance until the proposed reforms of national planning policy are made clear. It has been indicated that there will be greater protection for greenfield, and that mandatory housing targets may be scrapped. That being so, it makes little sense surely to continue to ‘punish the Island for failing to meet targets of the past? Our beautiful West Wight has been looking particularly splendid in the Easter sunshine, and I very much hope that you have been able to find the time to enjoy it.

• The scammers are still trying to use Covid to their advantage and try to trick us into parting with money – A couple of texts have been reported, one stating that your Covid Pass is available and tells you to click a link to apply. You can obtain your Covid Pass through the NHS App or by calling 119. The other states that you have been in contact with someone who has Covid and you need to buy a test followed by a link, allegedly to the NHS. There is no longer a test and trace process – nobody would know if you had covid or had been in contact with somebody who did. These are SCAMS they can be forwarded to 7726 where the information will be gathered as intelligence into scams. • Another reminder about calls from domestic insurance providers. These are prolific and persistent – do not engage with them and don’t agree to take any insurance. These insurances generally aren’t worth the paper they’re written on and once you have signed up they will keep ringing. These cover items such as white goods, tv’s, Sky and drainage and all operate in the same way. We recently heard of a victim who had over 40 direct debits on his account to these insurances! • We have been contacted by a resident who had a couple of men at his door this week asking to buy his motor home – which they said they believed was for sale. These weren’t islanders and were travelling around in a white pick up. Their approach would be to try to negotiate a silly price or pay a deposit and drive the motor home away and you would never see it or the money again. DO NOT engage with anyone on the doorstep.

Soaring through the sky from March to October, swifts, swallows and martins follow their food and move to areas where insect populations are booming. These beautiful birds are all visitors to the UK, so let’s admire them while they are here! • Swifts are almost always on the go, only touching the ground to nest. • Swallows can be seen gathering on telegraph wires, or swooping low to gobble insects and collect mud. • House Martins often nest in groups, dashing between built-up areas as well as the countryside. • Sand Martins prefer to nest in colonies on rivers, lakes and flooded gravel pits.
