TWMWildlifeand NatureIsleofWightis alocalgroupformed byTrampWoodsand WarrenMasonand theyarecurrently workingonmanylocal projects,fromholding wildlifephotography sessionsforthosewho needhelpin understandingand settinguptheir cameras,totipsand tricksintogettingbetter photosofthewildlife ontheisland.These sessionsarepublished throughtheirFacebookgroupandhave becomeverypopularandarebeing enjoyedbymany.

TheTrampwasrecentlyaskedbythe Hampshire&IOWWildlifeTrusttodoa talkforthem,showinganarrayofhis picturesplustalkingaboutrelevantstories. TheeveningwasasuccessthatTWM WildlifeandNatureIsleofWightarenow settinguptheirowntalksabout photographyandtellingtheirstories. Inspiteofbeingasmalleroperationwith justtheshoponthegroundfloorfoyer,they havemadeitto2023inahealthystateand arecontinuingtosupportandsupplement theexcellentserviceattheIsland’sNHS Trust,withtheirmissiontoraisemoneyto provideequipmentandfacilitiestohelp maketheexperiencebetterforpatientsandstaff.

LesleyMyland,ChairofTrusteesofFriendsofSt Mary’sHospital,said“thankyoutothosewho helpeduswiththeirkinddonationsandfundraising efforts,andathankyoutootothosestaff,volunteers andtrusteeswhohaveworkedsohardtokeepthe retailserviceandtheCharitygoingindifficulttimes. WeshouldalsothankthestaffatStMary’swhohave goneoutoftheirwaytouseourshopandkeepus profitableenoughtochannelfundstotheCharity.

Wewereabletoprovide£49,000worthofequipment lastyearincludingnewwheelchairsatboththemain andnorthreceptiondesksforvolunteerstousewhen supportingvisitorstothetrustwhomayhave mobilityproblems.Wewereabletosupplykeyrapid responseequipmentknownasanEMMAdeviceto therapidresponsekitthatisheldbytheon-callODP teamandfinallywewereabletosupplyresources suchasgames,booksandsensorytoysforthe

PaediatricsOccupationalTherapy Department.Wearealsoveryexcited aboutfundingaveryspecialimmersive trainingexperienceinthenew ambulancecentre.Thisisfocusedon improvingimmediatecareontheIsland tosavelivesincriticalsituationsbothfor individualsandthoseinvolvedinamajor incident”.

OnMarch30th thenewFreshwaterand YarmouthChurchofEnglandPrimary Schoolhaditsofficialopeningceremony. Thenewschoolhasbeenrunningsincethe NewYearbutworkcontinuesintherelandscapingofitssurroundingfieldfor anotherfewmonths.

ThenewschoolisrunbytheShalfleetand YarmouthFederation.Duringthe constructionperiodtheformerpupilsofthe previousAllSaintsChurchofEngland PrimarySchooljoinedthepupilsat YarmouthC.E.Primary.Oncethenew schoolwasfinished,thechildrenandstaffat YarmouthC.E.Primarymovedtothenew siteinFreshwater.Theheadteacherof ShalfleetandFreshwaterandYarmouthC.E. Primaryschools,ElizabethGrainger, continuestoleadtheFederation.Theformer schoolatYarmouthisnowemptyandthe fateofthebuildingremainsuncertain.

TherehasbeenaschoolinFreshwaterfor overthreecenturies.Theoriginalbuilding wasinwhatisnowMoaPlace.Itgavethe nametoFreshwater’smain‘SchoolGreen Road’.Thepaymentofthesingleteacher wasfundedfromtheincomeofcertainfields setasidebytheUrryfamily.Thecurrentsite wasadoptedforthenewChurchofEngland schoolandschool-mastershouseinthe 1850s.

Theschoolgrewinensuingdecadeswith additionalbuildingsuntilinrecentyearsit wasaclutterofarchitecturalstylesinvarious stagesofdecay.Someofthebuildingswere “sufferingfromsubsidence,structural cracking,dryrotandwateringress” accordingtoaCouncilpropertyservices statement.

Inearly2018,withnumbersofprimaryage childrenfallingacrosstheWestWightthe Councillaunchedaconsultationonwhichof theremainingfiveprimaryschoolsites shouldbeclosedtoleavefourwithmore sustainablenumbers.Atfirstthecouncil officersrecommendedclosingAllSaintsasit wastheleastbestperformingschool.

Thankstoapowerfulpublic communitycampaign,theCouncil wasconvincedtoretaintheexcellentsiteof AllSaints,closetothecentreoflocal population,whichsadlymeantthelossof theschoolbuildinginYarmouth.Retaining theFreshwatersiteundertheShalfleetand YarmouthC.E.Federationallowedspending ofanationalschoolrebuildingthecapital budgetoftheDepartmentofEducation.

Formeitwasanextraordinaryperiodof localpolitics.Iattendedeachofthe consultationmeetingsatwhichIheardthe mostpassionatespeechesthatbroughta lumptothethroat.Itshowedthata communitygroupcouldmusterargumentsto confoundtheofficer’sspreadsheets.It showedthatcouncil‘consultations’often seenasaboxtickingexercise,canbeeffective inchangingtheproposeddecision.Ittaught methatpoliticalcynicisminourdemocratic systemisself-fulfilling.Ifenoughpeople wanttogetinvolved,themachineryofour democracycanstillbemadetowork.

Thestateoftheartnewschoolwasbuilt withaDofEbudgetof£4.5million,the biggestgovernmentinvestmentintheWest Wightsincetheperiodoffortificationand garrisoningbetweenthe1850sand1950s.It hasacapacityof210pupils,eight classrooms,alibraryandanassemblyhall/ gymnasium.Theinteriorispaintedinbright coloursandlitbyroofskylights.Ithasa warm,inclusiveambiencecombinedwithan ethicofserioushardwork.AsCouncillor PeterSpinksaidtome,“Iwishmyprimary schoolhadbeenlikethis.”Icouldn’tagree more.

Thenewschoolisexcitinglymodernbut referencesthepast.Theoriginalsandstone hasbeenusedforoneexternalwallatthe entrance,andthePeterToms(anoutstanding localteacher)stainedglasswindowfromthe formerSecondaryandMiddleSchoolisin thewallbetweenthereceptionandlibrary. TheHeadteacher’sofficeretainstheironsafe fromtheoriginalbuildingandthe‘Effie PitmanAward’fromYarmouthC.E. Primaryhasbeenrelocatedtothenew school.

TheFreshwater&TotlandArchiveGroup formedin2010andbasedattheWest WightHeritageCentre,AvenueRoad, Freshwaterisrunbyvolunteersand throughyearsofhardworkhave establishedalocalarchiveaccessibleto localpeople.Displaysaresetupeveryfew monthsusingthewonderfulimagesthatit hasinitscollection.

TheThreeYarbridges

BeforeabridgewasbuiltacrossthemouthoftheRiverYarin1860,theonlymeansof crossingitatthispointwasbyferryboat.Theseferryboatsweresmallrowingboatsand passengerscouldhavealongwaitinallweathersforaboatmantobecomeavailableto takethembetweenYarmouthandFreshwater.Thealternativewasa4–6milejourney, oftenonfoot,alongnarrowlanestoThorley,Wilmingham,Aftonandthentothe causewayatFreshwater,whichwasthenearestcrossingpointbyland.

In1857,someinfluentialgentlemenformedacompany,theYarBridgeCompany,with theaimofbuildingatollbridgeandapproachroadsonraisedembankmentsacrossthe YarbetweenNortoninthewestandYarmouthintheeast.Thisbridgewasadrawbridge indesignandwasofficiallyopenedin April1860.Itgreatlyeasedthe journeybetweenthetwoparishesand muchdevelopmentsubsequently occurredintheareaasaresult.

In1926,aswingbridgewasbuilt, replacingtheoriginaldrawbridge.The IsleofWightCountyCouncil purchasedthebridgefromtheYar BridgeCompanyin1933anditwas freedoftollsthefollowingyear.This bridgewaswideenoughfortrafficin onedirectiononly,andtrafficwas controlledbytheIsleofWight’sfirst setofpermanenttrafficlights,which wereinstalledin1935.Theincreasein trafficandweightofcoachesandlorriesmeantthatanewswingbridgehadtobebuilt in1987andthisisthebridgeinusetoday.

Thedisplayshowsdrawingsandengravingsofpeoplecrossingtheriverinsmallboatsin theearlynineteenthcenturybeforethefirstbridgewasbuilt,andphotographsand informationonthethreebridges,builtin1860,1926and1987.

TheYarBridgedisplaywillcontinueuntiltheendofJune.

TotlandBeachToilets: Thefinalfour mosaicshavenowbeeninstalledonthe backwindowsofthetoiletblock.This projecthasbeenahugesuccessand Councillorswanttothankallthe volunteerswhowereinvolvedand committedtothisproject.Ithasbeenan amazingfewyearswitheveryonelearning anewskillandmakingfriendsona Tuesdayafternoon,whilstproducingsome greatartworkthatwillbearoundfora longtime.Theprojectstartedduring2017 andmostofourvolunteershave continuedwithHelenGoodman(the artist)inourcommunitywhodesigned theseboards.Youcancompletelywalk aroundthetoiletblocktoseethemall. Wehavealsoremovedoneoftheladies’ toiletsatTotlandBeachduetorepeated waterleaksandreplaceditwithababy changingbench.

KingsCoronation: Wildflowerseed packetsareavailableforTotlandresidents topickupfromtheofficeandother outlets.Pleaseusethemeitherinyour gardensorsuitableareas,andifyouare unsure,pleasespeakwiththeClerk.

OpenSpaces: Thankyoutothose volunteerswhohavealreadycome forwardtohelplookaftertheplanters aroundTotland,westillneedmoreplease. Youdon’thavetolookafterallofthem,if youcanhelpwithjustone,pleasecontact theClerk.

TheareaonCokesGreenbehindtheWar Memorialwillbecutbackandtidied,after thiswearelookingforateamofhelpers toregularlymaintain.

Thiswasreportedlastmonthandworth readingagain.Overthepastfewyears,the ParishCouncilhaveaddedsignstothelitter binsalongtheseafrontandoutsideofthe toilets,askingpeopletotaketheirlitter home.Furthermore,duringthesummer holidaystheParishCouncilhavebroughtin largeBiffabinstohelpalleviatetheamount ofrubbishfromthebeaches.Sadly,thishas notworked,asrubbishpileshighinallthe binswithpeoplestillleavingrubbishbags ontoporbythesideofthem.Itshouldbe noteditislikelyalotoftheseloosebagsof rubbishendupinthesea.Thetruthisno matterhowmanybinsareprovidedwecan notkeepupwithremovingalltherubbish andkeepingourcommunitycleanandtidy. Litterbinsprovidedarenotforhousehold rubbishorgeneralrubbishsuchasbroken gardenseatingoroldBBQ’s.Severallocal peoplecarryoutregularlitterpicksaround TotlandandColwellandCouncillorsare veryappreciativeofalltheirhardwork. Pleasehelpbydisposingofyourrubbish responsiblyleavingtheareacleanandtidy.

FYTbus can take you to the new TESCO in Afton Road, Freshwater

FYTbusruns Route A and Route B buses three time every weekday morning. Timetables are available on our minibuses, and on our website or from our office.

Standard adult fare is £2.00 but travel is free if you have a concessionary bus pass.

If you have a FYTpass , available at our office, your fare will be just £1.00.

MEDICAL TRIPS are available to help you reach appointments in Newport (£15.00) or at Brookside Health Centre, (£7.00) and can be booked via our website or by phoning the office. Our wheelchair accessible car can convey a disabled passenger, and their carer if required, on medical trips in their own wheelchair.

Saturday shopping trips to Newport

Are available at two-weekly intervals to the Newport shops and Waitrose at East Cowes. April door-to-door shopping trips will be on May 6th & 20th. The return fare is £7.50 and you can book by calling us on 01983 752917 on weekday mornings.
