Dear Readers Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I can hardly believe where the year has gone and I think it is now acceptable for me to be able to mention Christmas, because lets be honest it’s not far away now!!! The end of October sees Halloween and then the beginning of November its Guy Fawkes and then its a straight run to Christmas. There has been a change in the weather and there is now a chill in the air, personally I don’t mind this, its the rain I don’t like so lets keep our fingers crossed for a relatively dry November.

Resin Stone Driveways Beautiful Surface Overlays - for your driveway What is a Resin Stone Overlay?
BEFOR
E
Resin Stone Overlaying is effectively surfacing over your existing block-paved, tarmac or concrete driveway, path or patio. Resin Overlays provide a highly cost-effective and quick way of replacing the surface in the Garden or on the Driveway. As well as being aesthetically pleasing and highly durable, the benefits include: Being both solvent and odour free, during and after application - Restricting growth of weeds - Eliminating loose stones Being environmentally friendly - Compliance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
How is it done?
We initially prepare the existing surface using a high-pressure jet washer system and primer, before applying your chosen resin stone combination. The overlays typically take 1-2 days with minimal inconvenience.
Finishing
We also offer a range of natural or blended stone and surrounding landscaping options including moon stone to truly personalise your resin installation.

Totland Parish Council News Remembrance Sunday: This year the Royal British Legion West Wight Branch Annual Service of Remembrance will be held at St James Square on Sunday 8th November. There will be a Remembrance Sunday service at St. James Church, Yarmouth once the wreath laying ceremony has taken place. Councillors of Totland will also lay a wreath at the Totland War Memorial and all are welcome at either service. Skate Park: The Skate Park at Moa Place which is looked after by Totland and Freshwater parish councils had its annual competition at the end of August and was once again well supported. A production company has also shown an interest in a local person with regards to designs of skate parks. With the support of both parish councils they filmed a documentary in October and also financially supported the park with a new piece of equipment. Dogs on Leads: This has been better lately, however, please keep your dogs on leads where required to do so and don’t forget to pick up after them. The Recreation Ground especially is used by children and if you do not pick up after your dog their excrement can cause serious health issues. This is a play area for children and consideration is needed. BE RESPONSIBLE. Spot checks are being held regularly and we urge you to report any witnessed dog fouling in our area. To report any incidents of dog fouling please contact 01983 821000.
Open Spaces: Tree works on Cokes Green, Stokes Green and Turf Walk have now finished and a great job was carried out. The Committee will start work on phase II to keep these trees healthy. Natural England verbally agreed to works on Turf Walk, however, we are currently waiting for the certificate to commence. Colwell Common: The top area should now be cut and there is still a mixed response to this area and how it should look. Please let the Councillors know what you think by either writing a letter or emailing the Clerk. The decision will not be made until July 2016. Police Beat Surgeries: Beat Surgeries continue and you are urged to drop in and speak to your local Neighbourhood Policing Team if you have any concerns between 11.00am and midday on Monday 2nd November. West Wight Arts Association tickets can be purchased or reserved from the Parish Office for monthly concerts held in the Memorial Hall. Parish Office Services The Parish Office continues to offer a photocopying and laminating service and the Computer Suite is available for all Totland residents to use.
Car Park: ‘The Broadway’ car park is still high on the list Garden Waste Bags are available at £1.30 with Parish Councillors but there is nothing to each report at the time of writing this report. 4

Like many I have heard of the Isle of Wight Bat Hospital but I can’t say I know a lot about them so I decided to get in contact with them to learn a little more about these wonderful mammals.
back to the hospital to ascertain its injuries which could range from broken arms, fingers and tears to the wings.
Even if the bat has more holes in its wings than a colander they can still give it antibiotics to help the wing repair itself but it is important they do this as soon as they can to stop infections and for more serious The IOW Bat Hospital was founded by Donna injuries they work closely with Dr Ian Green and Graham Street and has been active since of Green and Forster Veterinary Clinic. 1996. The beds in their hospital are always full but they always have vacancies as they The IOW Bat Hospital nurse bats back to will never turn a bat away. All the bats they deal with have been found by members of the public and the majority of them have been injured, with most injuries caused by cats and both Donna and Graham know that it’s only natural for cats to want to play with bats as they have 7 cats themselves so never judge others.

I found out loads of bat facts and never realised that there are 17 breeding species of bat living in Britain and the most common If you find a bat, don’t panic, gently pick it up bat is the pipistrelle and astonishingly this with a gloved hand or with a tea towel and species only weighs between 4g-7g and its put it in a box which has several air holes in it. head and body is only 3.3cm – 4.8cm (about I can’t stress how important this is otherwise the size of your thumb) the bat won’t be able to breathe and will die. Its that time of year again when you will be thinking of putting the heating on, if you haven’t already. Your boiler and heating system has probably been sitting dormant for a few months so now is a good time to get them checked over before the cold spells sets in. A general service of the boiler or perhaps your radiators need bleeding. Whatever the reason, then a call to Vectis Heating can get the job sorted. Vectis Heating is an established business on the Island and owner Rob has built up a reputation for offering a first class service for a business that is run the ‘good old fashioned way’. Nothing is too much trouble for him and he will never sell you a service that you don’t require and because they specialise in breakdowns there is a good chance he will be able to repair your boiler rather than replace it and this could save you quite a bit of money. Vectis Heating cover all aspects of heating and hot water services from a boiler installation to a radiator not getting hot enough. They offer boiler services and repairs, can supply Landlords Certificates and safety inspection reports for Gas, Oil and LPG appliances. He is fully qualified, insured and definitely reliable. For more information Call Rob at Vectis Heating on 07816 508672 17

The seasonal flu vaccine is given to millions of people in the UK each year and it is impossible to get flu from having the flu jab because the vaccine doesn’t contain live viruses. A very small number of people experience side effects such as aching muscles, but this is simply the immune system responding to the vaccine. For the most part, seasonal flu vaccine side effects are mild or often non-existent. The most common side effect is soreness around the site of the injection. These symptoms are a lot less debilitating than having flu. The injected flu vaccine is offered free of charge on the NHS to people who are at risk to ensure that they are protected against catching flu. You are eligible to receive a free flu jab if you • are 65 years of age or over • are pregnant • have certain medical conditions • are living in a long-stay residential care home or other long-stay care facility • receive a carer’s allowance, or you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill .
