ith the clocks going back an hour and the night’s drawing in there is no doubt that Autumn is here. For me I try to keep as busy as I would in the Spring and Summer months and if our unpredictable British weather allows, I will continue being outdoors as much as I can, just this time I will be kitted out in a hat, scarf, and gloves. Even a gentle stroll to a local beauty spot with a flask of warming soup (see our recipe on page 18) will do you good. It is important that we look after our mental health as well as our physical health. Around this time of year, I try my hand at a new hobby to keep me busy. The list of crafty and non-crafty hobbies is extensive, and I am hoping to jump on the macrame trend and fill my home with macrame plant hangers. For those of a certain age, you will remember when this was a popular craft first time around and you may even have a plant hanger, wall hanging or even a lampshade from back then!!! Inside this issue you will find news from local councillors, information, editorial, puzzles and adverts from a fantastic range of advertisers offering a variety of services. As always, please use their services and support these local businesses. Our ‘Dates for your Dairy’ section lists a variety of events happening both in your local area and across the island and there should be something for everyone to enjoy. I hope you all have a fantastic November, stay safe and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

Local and Vocal in Freshwater By George Cameron So, there are talks about a third ferry company trying to get established in competition with the two existing ones. I welcome this idea and I wish them all the luck and support they need.

amazing, he passed on his knowledge to so many and he trained and encouraged many volunteers, Bob will be missed by many, especially Parish Council’s, schools and Charities.

I suggested this ten years ago and I went a bit further to say that such a company should be established and then offer shares to island residents as a way of getting the initial investment back. Effectively this concern will then belong to the people of this island to put a board of trustees in place to run it. Dividends can be paid annually by means of discounted ferry travel. To me this is the only way it should work in order to have real competition between the ferries, there will be no directors to be paid nor highflying managers to earn hundreds of thousands per year. Nothing sounds better than a ferry company owned and run by the residents of our island.

On Friday the 1st October I attended the opening of the four-day flower festival at All Saints Church, this was opened by our Lord Lieutenant Susie Sheldon. It was an enjoyable evening, and the flower displays were fantastic, I would like to thank all who took part in this event including the musicians whose music made it a pleasant visit, it was excellent for the local community. I enclose a couple of photos of some of the floral displays.

I recently attended a memorial commemoration for the late Bob Edney, Bob was local and was one of the Isle of Wight Council’s longest-serving officers, working in the Countryside service for over 39 years until his death in March 2020. I have worked closely with Bob in the last 15 years especially at Fort Victoria which was Bob’s favourite country park and also where he started his career as a ranger. He continued to manage the park throughout his career and was very protective of it, I cannot visit fort Victoria without thinking of Bob and his passion for this area. I liked to work with Bob because his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge was

I would like to finish this report on an issue that needs to be raised. As of late, we have had numerous cases of vandalism at our skate-park at Moa Place. This continued to get more and more serious until this week when a fire was lit, so bad that the fire brigade was called, and they established that petrol was used to start the fire. In my book this is pure aggressive vandalism that continued over the page

Local and Vocal in Freshwater By George Cameron needs to be nipped in the bud. If you have any information on any case of vandalism at the skate-park, please report it immediately. Freshwater Parish Council has spent a lot of money to provide this facility for our youngsters and the maintenance cost is ongoing, we are all paying for this via our council tax, so I plead with you, please let us catch the culprits and bring this to a stop. From working with our youngsters locally I know that most of them are brilliant and responsible and would never dream of doing such damage, which makes me wonder if those guilty ones are in fact from our area. Till next time, please take care and stay safe. All the best, George

Winter is here - How are you faring with the drop in temperatures and the shorter days? Rather than slowly letting yourself hibernate for months, why not take advantage of the long winter evenings to try out a Mindfulness course? Everyone is talking about Mindfulness these days, to the extent that it seems to be politically incorrect not to either know what it is or be aspiring to master it. Fortunately, Flo Sarlat, a mindfulnessbased cognitive therapy teacher, has just moved to Totland Bay and will be offering a range of mindfulness courses: In November, for those who just want a brief taste, Flo will be offering an Introduction to Mindfulness course, 3 hours over three weeks. Starting in January, for those considering a more dramatic change in their lives and wanting to lessen their symptoms of anxiety, stress, exhaustion, and depression, she will be leading the Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) course over eight weeks using Oxford evidence-based techniques.

Mindfulness can help to develop greater resilience. Supported by ongoing practice most people gain lasting benefits: more energy and enthusiasm; greater capacity for relaxation; more self-confidence; and an increased ability to handle difficult situations. Mindfulness practice will not remove a source of distress or discomfort, but it can open up choices through a shift in responses to difficult experiences. For more information, refer to Flo’s advertisement opposite. 7

News Report from Cllr Peter Spink Freshwater North & Yarmouth Peter.Spink@iow.gov.uk Dear Residents, The consultation re the Draft Island Planning Strategy has now closed. It will take some considerable time to consider all of the comments and to make appropriate amendments. Once this has been carried out there will be a further period of consultation. The Government has recently announced a change in its approach to planning. Greenfield will be given greater protection and the intention to centralise the decisionmaking process has been abandoned. I believe that this is good news for the Island and will do my best to ensure that these changes are reflected in the Island Draft Plan. I have objected to the planning applications re Camp Road, and Birch Close. These are greenfield sites which in my view ought not to be built upon. They are a ‘green lung’ for residents and wildlife alike. In my last letter to you I spoke about my involvement with residents in the Nurseries who have badger setts in their gardens. As the sets are on private land, it is not in fact a Council matter. Badgers are of course protected wildlife and there is a process whereby a licence must be obtained, and the correct procedure followed. I very much hope that an outcome can be reached whereby the interest of wildlife and of residents can be met. In my view where there is evidence of badger activity (and other protected species) planning permission for new development ought not to be granted.

The Anglo-Saxons had quite the fitting name for November. It’s usually at this time of the year in the northern hemisphere that cold winds start to chill you to the bone, and as such, they called it “Wind Monath”, or wind month. The November birth flower is the chrysanthemum. One of the world’s most popular cut flowers because of its variety. Available in a huge spectrum of colours these flowers are thought to bring good luck and joy into any home Those born in November can be born under one of two very different star signs. If you’re born before November 23rd then you have the sign of Scorpio. Those born on November 23rd or later have the sign of Sagittarius. Scorpios are said to value trust and honesty above other things, as well as being quite intense yet imaginative people. Those born under the sign of Sagittarius are quite different, being energetic and idealistic, while also generous and openminded. According to research published in 2008, serial killers are more likely to be born in November than any other month. Happy Birthday to all those celebrating this month.

If you are looking for a ‘handyman’ to help with those pesky jobs around the home and garden, then Simon Harrop is just the man for the job. We caught up with Simon to ask him some questions about his handyman service and to see if he is enjoying Island life. You are new to the Island, how are you finding it? I moved to the Island in March with my wife Ginny, to spend more time sailing our boat. We love living in Cowes and exploring the Island with our two dogs. I retired from my brand consultancy business but I’m not the sort to just put my feet up and tend to the roses! People are so friendly and always seem to have time to stop and chat. Being so busy with handyman work, I’m not doing much sailing after all! Why handyman work? As a property owner myself for many years, I’ve fixed all kinds of maintenance issues such as dripping taps, painting windows, unblocking drains, and clearing gardens. I’m good with my hands and wanted a change from desk work. I love getting out and meeting people. There’s real satisfaction from a job well done. It’s a big change from consultancy!? I suppose so, but running any business is about being organised, courteous and tidy but mostly about putting customers first. I have always had a service mentality.

What’s the hardest part of the job? Juggling diaries and trying to make everyone my priority. Some jobs require good weather, such as painting outside. If it rains the schedule gets messed up. I only started this work recently and already am really busy. I always try to keep people updated when doing a job. The evenings are for catching up with paperwork. Soup Glorious Soup... It’s soup season and nothing tastes better than homemade.

SOS Flat Roofing

The recipe below for butternut squash soup also uses coconut milk which adds a mild, creamy flavour and takes it from good to fabulous. This recipe is perfect for lunch or dinner with some fresh bread to dip or why not have a steaming bowl of it while sitting round the fire pit, followed by some toasted marshmallows. Ingredients • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 onion diced • 1 butternut squash (approx. 1kg/2lb), peeled and chopped into smallish cubes • ½ teaspoon chilli flakes or to taste • 2 cloves garlic grated or crushed • 1 inch ginger grated • Salt and pepper to taste • 400ml coconut milk • 450ml Chicken or vegetable stock cube • 2 tablespoons coriander chopped (leave some back for garnish) • Pumpkin seeds for garnish (optional) Instructions 1. Put the olive oil in a large saucepan and add the diced onion. Fry on a gentle heat with the lid on for 5 minutes until softened but not brown. Stir occasionally. 2.

When the onions are softened, add the butternut squash, garlic, chilli flakes and ginger and fry on a low heat for 2 minutes.

3.

Add the stock and the coconut milk and bring to the boil then simmer for 1520 minutes until the butternut squash is soft.

4.

Turn the heat off and add the chopped coriander and blitz with a blender until smooth.

5.

Serve the soup decorated with coriander leaves and pumpkin seeds.

Not too many scams to warn you about this month although the scammers won’t have taken time off so please be really vigilant with any unsolicited communications. • We have received a report from a resident who received a call from a funeral plan company offering to carry out her funeral much cheaper than her existing plan. She engaged with them initially but then realised that they might not be genuine and on speaking to a local funeral directors she realised that the offer they were making was unrealistic and it was probably an attempt to get her details – a phishing scam. When checking the number they called from online she realised that there were a lot of negative reports about them so instructed her bank not to allow payments to be taken. • We would like to make you aware of a new service recently launched. The scheme is urging people to “stop, hang up and call 159” to check that calls purporting to be from your bank are for real. The idea is to help those who believe they have been contacted by scammers claiming to be their bank, or by fraudsters who encourage them to transfer money. According to Stop Scams UK, criminal gangs stole over £470 million from individuals and small businesses last year by pretending to be a bank or other service provider, encouraging consumers to falsely make a payment or transfer money. When calling 159, you’ll be taken through an option menu in which each bank that has signed up to the service is read aloud. Customers are then able to use their telephone keypad to be put through to their bank. You’ll then be directed through to your bank’s customer service department. Note that calling the service will cost the same as making a national rate call, which means if you’ve got inclusive minutes it’ll be taken from those. For those who bank with firms not yet involved in the 159 pilot – you should continue to contact your bank by using the number on the back of your debit or credit card. Remember Scam emails can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk and scam texts to 7726 19

They can also be obtained by contacting our office on 01983 752917. Standard adult fare is £2.50 but travel is free if you have a concessionary bus pass. If you have a FYTpass, your fare will be just £1.00 (details of how to apply for the FYTpass are obtainable from our office or on our website - www.fytbus.org.uk ). Our “MEDICAL TRIPS” are available to help you reach appointments in Newport or at Brookside Health Centre, and can be booked on the above phone number or via The Hub at West Wight Sports Centre on 01983 752168. We also have our wheelchair accessible car available to convey a disabled passenger, and their carer if required, on medical trips to doctors, dentists, opticians or hospital, in their own wheelchair. SATURDAY SHOPPING TRIPS to Newport are available at two-weekly intervals for those who are unable to purchase their “essentials” locally. October’s door-todoor shopping trips will be on the 2nd, the 16th and the 30th . The return fare is £6.00 and you can book by calling the office number (01983 752917) or visit the FYTbus website. The FYTbus Charity Shop on The Broadway, Totland, has something to suit every pocket. If you’d like to come and look around, the shop is open from 10.00 to 16.00 every weekday, and 10.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays – and the staff will be very pleased to help you. Protecting YOU and our volunteers - Many people in West Wight are now vaccinated against the virus, but we still don't want the people who use or work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching it, so we are continuing to keep our vehicles and our premises as clean as possible, and providing handgel for passengers, shop customers and volunteers to use. We try to follow the Government’s guidelines with regard to distancing and, whilst the wearing of face masks will soon not be compulsory, you CAN wear one aboard our buses, or in our shop, if you feel more comfortable by doing so. Please help us to keep you safe! Wight Community Access – FYTbus, Winchester House, The Broadway, Totland Bay. PO39 0AX Tel: 01983 752917 Web: www.fytbus.org.uk Email: info@fytbus.org.uk
