Welcome to the November issue or as I like to refer to it.... the last one before the Christmas issue!!! I feel it’s safe for me to now mention Christmas, especially as the shops already have their shelves packed with decorations and presents for the festive season.
For information on events happening across the island including details of Christmas Fairs please go to our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 18 and 19. Remember to let us know if you are holding any community events in December and we can help promote them for you.
This month’s front cover is a little different for many reasons, firstly as it was taken by myself on my phone and I’m not normally very good with photos and secondly, you might be wondering where on the Island I took this, but if you look closely you will see that the Isle of Wight is actually in the background as at the time I was visiting Hayling Island. This ideal photo opportunity appeared, and it made me think that although the planets aren’t aligned it’s always good to have your seagulls all lined up... except there is always the one that won’t do as it should.
Firework season is upon us, although in some areas on the Island this strangely seems to be something that happens more than once a year. If you are a pet owner like me, you too probably dread this time of year. Please make sure you have your pets safely indoors as soon as it turns dark in the few days leading up to and after the 5th November. If you are having your own display, please do the right thing and just drop a note through your neighbour’s doors and even share the details on social media so all animals can be secured and kept safe so the stress to our pets is kept to a minimum.

Report from George Cameron - Freshwater
Some of you may have noticed that the public toilets at Freshwater Bay are now in the process of being rebuilt, this Freshwater Parish Council project is one of several that we will see over the next few years and this particular investment is vital for our local community and visitors alike. Unlike many other countries, we do provide public toilets but of course this comes at a price, especially when they get vandalised. We are having problems at the Moa Place public toilets from time to time, sometimes it is more graffiti and minor breakages but still it is not necessary, and we are aware of who the culprits are. So, I would like to ask parents to please find out where your children are and what they are up to. We have had lots of damage done to the Skate Park and MUGA, again this is done maliciously. Personally, I would like to see the culprits caught and let their parents pay for the damage done.
As we are drifting into the long winter months I feel as usual I should warn people to take care when lighting fires or candles. One can never be too careful, and accidents happen so easily, also please check on your neighbours and make sure that they are safe. Especially with the increase in fuel prices, some people may look at alternative means of heating, my advice would be….Don’t! Our fire brigade are doing a fantastic job, I take my hat off to them with the workload they have to cope with sometimes and also the emotional stress that goes along with it at times. So please be careful.
I had the rare opportunity to go to the mainland recently, as it happened, I travelled on a Saturday. I was not aware that our favourite ferry company
“Wightlink” does not offer a service between 8:45 and 1:05 on a Saturday! What a problem that caused me, but I had to fall in line as we do not have an alternative (Yet). I wonder what is being done about the frequency of the ferries, especially over weekends when most of us want to go over to the mainland to do shopping or just to visit friends or family. I know there have been lots of complaints made to both the ferry companies and our MP, but all that lobbying seems to be wasted time. I feel that we have to stand together and approach the Government with a strong petition to get the situation rectified, for example, some ferry companies in Scotland are subsidised by our Government. My question is: where the parity is, how can they justify funding them when we are left at the mercy of piracy. Any ideas please contact me to take this further.
The good news is that the new primary school in School Green Road is nearing completion and is looking good. The proposed completion date is the 29th January, but I think the project is way ahead of schedule and will be completed sooner which is good news. I am not sure when the handover will take place, but I will let you know as soon as I find out. This has been a long road, and everyone has been looking forward to having our local school back and I know that the staff and governors are eager to get settled and deliver the good education that they deliver at the moment in Yarmouth, this is another achievement for Freshwater.
All the best George

An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place giving informal education about dementia, guidance and signposting to other services. We welcome people with dementia, their families, carers, professionals and anyone with an interest in dementia.
Charity Number CIO 1171437
It’s a Café with a difference!
Alzheimer Café IOW is an Isle of Wight charity that is a lifeline for people with dementia, their carers, family and friends. Alzheimer Café IOW started in 2009 and has 6 cafés across the island but is not like your conventional café as they have the role of providing accurate and appropriate information relating to dementia in a stress-free environment.
Anybody can go along to these ‘meet ups’ so I went to the East Cowes Alzheimer Café to find out what it’s all about. As I walked through the doors I was met with a smile and friendly greeting from the volunteers, which immediately put me at ease. I explained that I had come along just to find out more about it all, and this wasn’t questioned, and I was offered a seat. It was lovely to watch the interaction between visitors and volunteers – name tags were given, and tea and coffee was served.
All the cafes are overseen by different co-ordinators, and I met Lizzie and Barry the coordinators of this particular café. I also met with Anna Roberts (Charity Liaison Officer) and Floss (volunteer at East Cowes, Cowes & Newport), who made sure everyone was catered for, tea and coffee wise. All the café’s follow a rolling programme which enables them to touch on key topics throughout the year as there is no ‘one-size fits all’ and Barry who gave this month’s presentation on ‘Why Life Stores Matter’, is co-ordinator for the Dementia Awareness Partnership IW, the training arm of the Alzheimer Café IOW.
All the café’s use the same format and language while still having their own distinctive characteristics and they all work with various agencies across the island including Memory Service and Carers IW to ensure the best support is available for everyone.
The whole dementia area is new to me and I was shocked at some of the statistics I found out especially that a probable diagnosis of dementia requires confirmation from a Memory Service psychiatrist before accessing government support, however the IW Trust has been unable to appoint replacements for many months and the number of referrals have been averaging 60+ per month with a waiting time in excess of 12 months and growing and this is why the Alzheimers Café is such an important part of the community offering informal dementia education and information and signposting to other services.
Alzheimer Cafés welcome anyone who is worried about their memory, has a diagnosis of dementia, or would like to find out more about dementia. It is clear that families come to an Alzheimer Café because they are seeking support and looking for answers and for many, diagnosis is a mixed blessing… An illness is given a probable diagnosis, but no onward care is currently available. The future isn’t just uncertain it’s fearful!
There are currently 2,655 people over the age of 65 living with dementia on the Island and this number is likely to increase to 3,920 by 2030 – Isle of Wight Dementia Strategy.
You can find details of all the Alzheimer Cafés on the opposite page.

Consultation Church Hall – Totland Residents only
The Parish Council have been in discussions, since 2007 on and off, regarding the purchase of the Church Hall and to improve this facility for the Community. We want to provide a community asset including a Parish Office that will benefit the residents of Totland. This will remain as a community hall and the Parish Council will be looking to provide a better and up to date facility for all. Smaller rooms will also be available to hire as well as a large hall for shows/ pantomimes. An in-depth consultation will take place involving residents asking what they would like to see within this asset and will be strongly led by the Community. The land behind the hall has
also been considered and the Parish Council are putting together a housing needs survey with a plan to have affordable housing on the site for local people. In order for this to move forward the first stage includes asking residents for their support. Please drop into the Parish Office on The Broadway and pick up a questionnaire. Please consider joining the Totland Mailing list to receive all information for this.

Needles Coastguard Rescue Team
Have you ever fancied saving a life or helping those in need?
We are pleased to announce that we are recruiting for more volunteers to join our team at Needles Coastguard Rescue Team.
The Coastguard Rescue Service is the frontline response of HM Coastguard, one of the 4 Category 1 emergency responders - alongside Fire, Police and Ambulance.
Rope rescue, Water Rescue and Mud rescue are just some of the skills you will learn as you take the plunge and assist in varying levels of emergencies all over the Island.
The only requirements that you need to apply are a valid full UK driving licence and importantly the ability to respond to a proportionate amount of incidents at any time of day or night. You will also need to pass a medical. Preferred candidates will live and/or work in the West Wight. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who lives and works in Yarmouth, Freshwater & the surrounding areas.
This role is NOT a full time position. Many of our Volunteers have the ability to leave their place of work when required or are retired.
There is so much more to know, so why not contact us at area9@mcga.gov.uk and start a journey that could take you to the frontline of emergency response.
To search. To rescue. To save.
Every area of Our Island has its own special environmental characteristics, but I really would challenge anybody to find anywhere better than the beauty, landscape and ecological diversity we are blessed with in the West Wight. Being right on our doorstep, we don’t always appreciate just how magnificent our scenery is and how special are some of our very prized fauna and flora.
The lifting of Covid restrictions has seen the very welcome return of our visitors from the mainland and from Europe. Like many, we hosted, for the first time in several years, our most dear friends including Bernd and Uta for a holiday with us in Totland. Always keen to show them the very best that we have to offer, we afforded them very little opportunity for relaxation and tested their endurance with some of the best walking tours we have available. It’s always such a pleasure to share what we have and even better in a good company of friends.
Our Indian summer has been a boost to our local businesses, and I suspect that many of the Cafe’s regret closing quite so early in the season. The flood of tourists, coaches and packed holiday vehicles managed to overwhelm all of our available parking including most of Colwell Common. Parking is a key attraction to visitors who stay rather than driving off and stay longer (spending we trust more as well) so we must ensure it is either free or very affordable to them. Promoting our visitor parking schemes does help.
Turning to the main local issues this month, my virtual postbag was left overflowing with positive feedback from the news
that the draft Island Planning Strategy is to be referred back to enable recent data to be incorporated, to reflect more accurately the needs of our Island population and we trust, to now incorporate the many changes coming through in the planning changes to the levelling-up bill. I was particularly pleased to see that 13 of the 15 main issues I had submitted through various channels had been incorporated. Whilst I doubt I was the only one proposing those changes it is pleasing to know that they carried sufficient worth as to change national policy for the betterment of our local and Island community. My sincere thanks to the not-so-small-army of supporters that worked diligently on the research and submissions.
Totland, like its neighbouring parishes, enjoys many small roads that to many appear to be more single track than two-way road. A legacy of course to our history and of the quieter, slower days before the motor car. To help deal with the volume of traffic, many of these have been equipped with turning areas and passing places to avoid all reversing far back up roads or attempting to use private drives as lay-bys. Sadly, as the pressure on parking increases, many of these are now used as parking places, causing significant challenges to traffic flows. I am pleased therefore that Totland Parish Council has supported my proposal to request all passing places and turning areas to be noparking. Not only will this assist all road users by providing a safe passing place (cyclists and pedestrians included), but we may hear a loud cheer from our waste contractors, delivery drivers, posties and emergency services!
