ART THERAPY

Dear Readers

Welcome to the October issue of Island Magazines. As you know I always like to give a mention about the weather but really I’m not sure what can be said about it this month. There have been some nice days at the beginning of September but then I am also hearing that some people have put the heating on already!!! To me October represents Autumn leaves and Halloween and the nights drawing in but I really don’t feel that way whilst writing this but who knows what is in store for us in the next couple of weeks. One thing I know for sure is that this issue is packed with news, information and details of some great local businesses. You can read all about Art Therapy on page 7 and on page 11, if you are a cat owner you can find out how you can help the cat crisis on the Island. The ‘Dates for your Diary’ page is on page 18 and 19. The Rotary is appealing to the generosity of Islanders in the hope that you will all be able to support this years Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. The full details are on page 16 and this is a great Charity to help and in doing so you will put a smile on the face of a child at Christmas. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep me informed if you have any news to share. Until next month.

unwanted hair and treat a whole variety of skin conditions without the risk of light being absorbed by surrounding areas. It only relies partially on targeting the pigmentation in the hair and skin conditions and works by delivering a low energy pulsated light, gradually, through a series of repetitive shots ‘glided’ across the area. It achieves the same effects as traditional lasers and IPL treatments but in a gentler manner and is therefore painless. It is suitable for all skin types and hair colours, including tanned, grey and blondes and is delicate enough on tough facial hair removal treatments as well as most other body areas. Light Treatment Therapy isn’t just good at getting rid of unwanted hair. It’s equally efficient with dealing with quite a number of skin conditions and cosmetic skin treatments such as; acne reduction, skin pigmentation, vascular lesions and wrinkles and fine lines.

FRESHWATER PARISH COUNCIL NEWS This summer it was a delight to see the whole of the village come together, for the first Freshwater Live event in August. Organised by a group of volunteers and supported by the Freshwater Parish Council a myriad of activities were held at various venues including the West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Freshwater Library, Dimbola Museum, Methodist Church and on Jubilee Field. For those of you who enjoy the walk through Spinfish, you may have noticed some changes this summer. This footpath runs through land that Freshwater Parish Council maintains, and following clearance work to the south side of the footpath last year, this year our contractor has cleared the north side, installing a bridge & bench. Spring flowering bulbs will be planted in the autumn. This area has many Aspen trees. The Parish Council has been advised by MJC Tree Services that this area is congested & would benefit by being thinned out and this work will be carried out in September, when the Horse chestnuts that are failing will also be removed. The MUGA (Multi Use Games Area) is an important and well used facility for the young people of the village, but sadly has been neglected by the Isle of Wight council who own and maintain the site. Following negotiations with Freshwater Parish Council, the Isle of Wight Council has agreed to carry out works to the area including installing new energy efficient lighting, repairing the metal fencing, wooden boards and fire damage to the goal areas. Freshwater Parish Council will also make a financial contribution to the works, with the intention of the Isle of Wight Council transferring the facility over to Freshwater Parish Council to manage on a long lease.

carry out works to upgrade some of the ramps in the park and will be working with the users on designs and ideas. Councillors Lloyd and Hobbs attended the very first Newcomers Lunch organised by the Freshwater Village Association. There was a fantastic turn out, with over 60 new residents coming together. Several local organisations including the West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Freshwater and Totland Archive Group and Seahorses community art studio had stands, and everybody was given a big bundle of information about what goes on in and around Freshwater. It was a lovely way to welcome new residents to the village and we hope the first of many such lunches. Councillor John Medland has joined the Parish Council in addition to his work as a Ward councillor. We welcome John and look forward to working more closely with him. We were also pleased to welcome Sandra Allen as a parish councillor at our meeting in July. Christmas is coming and the Parish Council will once again be putting up Christmas trees and lights. If you have a shop or office on the main street and would like a tree please contact Emma at the Parish Office. Don’t forget you can keep up to date with all the latest news from the Parish Council by visiting our website www.freshwater-parish. org.uk or follow us on our new Facebook page www.facebook.com/freshwaterparishcouncil.

You can contact the Parish clerk and his team via telephone 01983 752000 or email freshwaterpc@btconnect.com. The parish office is open Monday to Friday 10am to 12noon. A calendar of upcoming meetings, agendas and minutes of previous meetings can be The Skate park committee have also agreed to downloaded from the Parish website.

ART THERAPY

I hope you like this months front cover. Some of you will know exactly what it means and for the others I’d like to welcome you to the world of Art Therapy. Art Therapy is exactly what it says it is… creative therapeutic colouring for grown ups. Remember when you were a child and you were given a colouring book! It’s exactly the same as that… you get to bring a picture to life. It’s your picture/book and you can do what you want. You can use pencils, crayons, felt tips, gel pens, the list goes on. You can use whatever colours you want and if you don’t want to stay within the lines then you don’t have too as this is the beauty of Art Therapy!!! I have the Secret Garden colouring book which is combined with an inky treasure hunt and features pictures containing birds, rabbits, insects and animals hidden amongst swirly trees, beautiful gardens and other magical wonders. I can find myself engrossed in colouring for hours at a time or sometimes I can just pick it up and shade a few flowers. There is no set time and you can make the rules up as you go along. Its relaxing and rewarding and you LIZ KEMPSTER can take it with you wherever you go and its not expensive either. Mobile Hairdresser

Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. Last month the Secretary of State refused permission for the Navitus Bay wind farm, on advice given by the Planning Inspectorate. Whatever your view on the merits of wind energy, and I remain unconvinced that it is a reliable answer to our energy needs, this particular development enjoyed considerable support on the Island. The reason for that is twofold, firstly we are in greater need of economic investment than the mainland, and secondly the nearest part of the windfarm would have been over 17KM (10.5 miles) away, and though visible would not have been overbearing. Despite personal reservations, as a Councillor I supported the development because of the very substantial economic benefits it would have brought to the Island and to the West Wight in particular. If the Navitus Bay company was persuaded that Yarmouth would be the best port for maintenance and servicing (and there was a very good chance of that) we would have had a hundred well paying jobs located here, and the huge benefits not just from their salaries but for all other local suppliers. The Harbour would have been less reliant on seasonal trade and the additional traffic for the Yarmouth ferry would have helped sustain that link. Vestas too, as the preferred blade supplier would have secured hundreds of manufacturing jobs. So, economically, it is very disappointing for the Island that we shall not now see that secured investment.

Authorities and others. The aim of the project, known as the Hampshire and Isle of Wight bid (HIOW) is to obtain powers from Government to enable us to boost business and skills, accelerate housing delivery (in our area that focus would be on affordable housing for those with a local connection) invest in infrastructure and deliver better, affordable local public services. We stand a good chance of approval, because the overall size of the economy (GVA) of the area is around £47 billions; that’s close to the economy of the whole of Wales. Nevertheless we are still, as an average, 6% below the productivity of the rest of the South East and declining. We believe that with devolved powers we could reverse that trend by enabling the area to address its own skills shortages and improve access between the Island and the mainland. It’s early days yet, though we are progressing more rapidly than other bids. We hope to have the first of the approvals needed by the end of November. Finally, a number of residents have asked me why they still can’t get faster broadband when the £5M project to upgrade rural phone lines completed last month. The problem is, that it didn’t. Over 80% of the work is completed but there are still several green cabinets yet to be installed. Engineers have encountered technical difficulties and there have also been legal issues concerning wayleaves - which give authority to run cables to a new cabinet. BT has been given an extension of time until the end of December.

Turning to other developments you may be As always, I’m here to help with IoW Council aware that the Island Council has agreed to issues in any way that I can. participate in a joint devolution bid along with Hampshire, Portsmouth, Southampton and the Stuart Hutchinson District Councils, supported by the two Local Enterprise Partnerships, the two National Parks 8

Update On 5th December 2015, FYTbus will have notched up 4 years on the road, successfully helping the residents of this area of West Wight to more easily access their local shops and amenities. In an effort to extend a similar helping hand to the residents of villages between Brook and Brighstone, we have been running a “pilot” service for the past 3 weeks between Brighstone and Freshwater. This will cease on 2nd October, but we are collecting feedback in the form of a survey, to assess whether a regular scheduled service, possibly starting at the beginning of 2016, would be feasible. Extra services, of course, need extra minibus crews, so we are hoping that this new venture will also bring us some new volunteers.

In September 2014 FYTbus was invited to take over the management of the charity shop on Totland Broadway, and this has been very successful for us - lots of our passengers having contributed goods to the shop, for which we are very grateful. During the past year, the charity shop volunteers have managed to “recycle” many items of clothing, bric-a-brac, books, etc., which has helped to keep our minibuses on the road by contributing towards the cost of fuel and repairs. Indeed, throughout the FYTbus organisation our hard-working volunteers make a tremendous contribution by their efforts, whether driving the minibuses, assisting passengers, cleaning the vehicles, running the shop, helping in the office, etc., and we are very appreciative. If you would like to join their ranks, you can volunteer by contacting our office on 01983 752917 or visiting our website www.fytbus.org.uk . 17
