utumn is approaching and the island is a beautiful place to be during this season. The changes in nature will be visible around every corner and there are so many wonderful walks to enjoy. You really can’t beat island life! The island has been very busy this year with visitors from the mainland, some are regulars, but many have ventured here for the first time, and I am constantly hearing how lucky we are to live here, to have this on our doorsteps every day... but it does make me wonder if having it here right under our noses we forget the beauty and just take it for granted. I am now going to go about my business with my eyes slightly wider open to take in all the beauty that is right here in front of me. In this issue you will find local news and information for your area, mixed with advertising, features, editorials and of course our puzzle pages which I know many of you are a big fan of. As always thank you for picking up a copy and I’d love to hear your thoughts on anything featured in this month’s issue and please do get in touch with me if you have any news to share or are organising an event. I hope you have a safe and happy month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

We will be back next year starting in May and run every Saturday until the end of September. An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place giving informal education about dementia, guidance and signposting to other services. We welcome people with dementia, their families, carers, professionals and anyone with an interest in dementia.
What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise.

News Report from Cllr Peter Spink - Freshwater North & Yarmouth Peter.Spink@iow.gov.uk Dear Residents, Since last writing to you, Freshwater has been in the spotlight! I attended 2 meetings of residents who are outraged that Freshwater is to be the focus of major housing development at Camp Road as set out in the Draft Island Planning Strategy. At the time of writing this report the deadline to have your say on the plan during the public consultation was set for the 24th September and I hope that you were able to voice your objections. I am in talks with the Alliance Group, who have initiated the Plan, and I have pointed out that, inadvertently I trust, its central claim is misleading. The Plan claims to have answered Islander’s concerns (re the number of houses to be built on the Island) by reducing the Government’s ‘target’ from 668 per annum to 486. Not in the main part of the Plan but in the extensive appendices, however, is a paper that says it is ‘expected’ and ‘desired’ that most of the sites removed to lower the figure to 486 will come back into play as rural exception sites! The Island’s M.P. Bob Seely wants the Island to determine it’s own housing need by local assessment and survey, and not by the Government’s algorithm. The Island is unique, and we need a unique solution to the shortfalls of its housing policy. We can do this by claiming an exceptional case for the Island under paragraph 60 of the National Planning Policy Framework. Bob Seely has told the Alliance Group that 10
Government Ministers have indicated that such an application will be looked upon favourably by the Government. Unfortunately, to date, the Alliance has refused to take this course! In my view it is time to forget about party politics and do what is best for Islanders! The appearance of Southern Water before the Council’s Scrutiny Committee has now taken place. They outlined an ambitious scheme to modernise foul and surface water infrastructure on the Island. The Island has heard this before from Southern Water, but I will do my best to ensure that this happens. In my view planning permissions ought to contain a condition that development cannot commence unless it can be shown that it will not contribute to drainage overload. The serious problem regarding badgers having taken over a number of residents’ gardens in the area of the Nurseries continues. I am liaising with the Council to provide assistance. Summer seems to have returned in the last few days, and I hope you are all managing to find time to enjoy it. I look forward to writing to you again shortly. Best wishes, Peter Spink, Ward Councillor for Freshwater North and Yarmouth.

Goat is the most commonly eaten red meat in the world, as many cultures do not eat beef or pork. Goat meat makes up around 60% of the red meat produced worldwide and yet in countries such as the UK – where the wool and lamb trade has dominated – it has always been one of the much lesser consumed meats. However, because of increasing ethnic diversity it is starting to become far more readily available.
Nestling between Shorwell and Chale Green, is Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, owned by Simone and David. They started off with a small herd of Golden Guernsey dairy goats and Pygmy goats, and then bought some Boer meat goats. Goat meat has been available on the Island for a number of years, but commercial production has not been regularly maintained. After obtaining EHO approval a few years ago, with the help of a number of Island butchers, they tempted a few select pubs and restaurants with their goat meat, which have been added to their menu or to their specials boards. All reported great interest from diners and despite covid interruptions - consumption rates on the Island continue to rise quite rapidly. Islanders are being encouraged to try adding goat meat to their menus. To place an order, book a smallholding visit or arrange a Goatober presentation in 2021, ring Simone or David on 01983 551527. 11
Local and Vocal in Freshwater By George Cameron Hi Everyone, I hope you enjoyed your summer this year, although it is not completely over yet. ....I say with confidence. This month I have two very important issues that I wish to talk about. The first is the disturbingly large scale of the proposed development at Camp Road. I am absolutely shocked at the number of units proposed for this site and surprised that the IOW Council actually accepted this application. At the time of writing, Freshwater Parish Council already discussed it so by the time you read this you will know the outcome of that meeting. I sincerely hope that as many of you as possible made your comments on the IOW Council’s website, the deadline for comments was the 24th September. I do not agree that any large-scale developments such as this should have the normal short prescribed period of consultation, a lot of residents who may be affected by the outcome of this development may be away for the summer and would be denied the opportunity to comment on the application. I know that we need more appropriate housing in the West Wight, but do we need a 130-unit development off Camp Road? We simply do not have the infrastructure for anything of this scale, never mind our poor road network in Freshwater. Of course, we need to move on and give our children the option to be able to buy or rent a home in Freshwater but at the same time we need to preserve and protect our environment and keep our village the special place it is at the moment. 12
The second point I want you to be aware of is that I got the green light from Freshwater Parish Council to go ahead with planning an event to celebrate our Queen’s Platinum anniversary. The date for the event is the 3rd June 2022 and will be held on Jubilee field next to the West Wight Sports and Community Centre. Many of you will remember the successful Diamond jubilee event and of course the Golden jubilee celebrations was held on Jubilee field, but this celebration event will be special and will be better than all the others put together. We have invited all the other West Wight Town and Parish Council’s to join us and put on an event that will be unbeatable. So, save this date, 3rd June 2022. Book your time off now and invite your friends and family over to our lovely island and especially, Freshwater for a memorable day. At this current time, I cannot give you the exact details because we are still in the booking stages, but I can say, do not miss this for the world. I feel that sometimes we need to celebrate and bring our community together, this event is aimed at doing exactly that. Plus, we will pay tribute to everyone who was affected by the Covid epidemic, there are so many people and organisations who gave their all to support our community, they will be celebrated at the event for sure. That’s all for now and until next time, please save that date.

Geoff is the proud owner of a Fordson Super Major and brought her in 2017 from a farm in Steeple Ashton, where she had sat for many years unused but thankfully covered over. She is still in her natural colours, as she would have been when she came off the factory line (Empire Blue for everything but the wheels which are Fordson Orange), obviously she has one or two marks on her but what 60-year-old hasn’t? Her engine purrs and she is in great shape. Geoff does the odd favour for his neighbour by topping one of her fields ensuring she keeps in good working order. This tractor is affectionately called ‘The Beast’ and this name came about after her recent cameo role in a drama that was filmed on the Island. She was spotted by a location scout who happened to see her sitting on the driveway and after photos were sent to the Director, she was offered a scene in the drama ‘The Beast Must Die’. On the day of filming, her scene took place on the road leading down from The Needles New Battery and involved her having a very near miss with an Aston Martin being driven by the leading lady. Meeting ‘The Beast’ really made my day and having a ride on her made my year!

Being silly by Maggie Currie As children we have an instinctual grasp of humour and appreciate all that is silly as a matter of course. Even the smallest absurdities provoke joyous gales of giggles or laughter. As we get older, this innate ability to see the value of silliness can diminish. Work takes precedence over play, and we seem to have less incentive to exercise our imaginative minds by focusing on what is funny. When we remember childhood, we may recall the pleasures of dressing up in funny costumes, reciting nonsense poems, making up strange games, or playing pretend. This unabashed silliness nourished our vitality and creativity. We can take in this nourishment once again by giving ourselves permission to lighten up and be silly. Too often we believe it serves no purpose to encourage our inherent silliness that is an inborn aspect of self. We may believe it is at odds with the grown-up culture of maturity. We play yet we don’t lose ourselves in play, and our imaginations are never truly given free reign because we regard the products of irrational creativity as being valueless. Yet silliness itself constitutes a vital part of human existence on many levels. Our first taste of ethereal bliss is often a consequence of our willingness to dabble in what we deem outrageous, nonsensical, or absurd. We delight in ridiculousness not only because laughter is intrinsically pleasurable, but also because it serves as a reminder that existence itself is fun. Skipping, doodling, and singing funny songs are no less entertaining than they were when we were children. We need not lose all interest in these cheerful and amusing activities, but to make them a part of our lives we must be ready to sacrifice a little dignity and a lot of fear. Silliness should be regarded as a priority because so much of life is inescapably serious. Through the magic of imagination, you can be or become anything–a photographer, a professional athlete, a dancer, a pilot. Whether you take hundreds of silly pictures, revel in the adulation of your fans as you make the winning catch, boogie down rock-star style in front of your bedroom mirror, or turn your desk into a cockpit, the ensuing hilarity will help you see that light-hearted fun and adulthood are not at all incompatible. If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I offer coaching and mentoring to you – for you to make the changes you want to in your life. Build your confidence in your abilities. To help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it. There is no catch. I believe in you. Get in touch today to book your coaching sessions.
My role is to hold space for you, to encourage, listen & align. You win, I win. I love my clients & adore coaching. Award Winning Transformational Coach

Protecting YOU and our volunteers - Many people in West Wight are now vaccinated against the virus, but we still don't want the people who use or work for our service to be put off by the fear of catching it, so we are continuing to keep our vehicles and our premises as clean as possible, and providing handgel for passengers, shop customers and volunteers to use. We try to follow the Government’s guidelines with regard to distancing and, whilst the wearing of face masks will soon not be compulsory, you CAN wear one aboard our buses, or in our shop, if you feel more comfortable by doing so.
