Resin Stone Driveways Beautiful Surface Overlays - for your driveway What is a Resin Stone Overlay?
BEFOR
E
Resin Stone Overlaying is effectively surfacing over your existing block-paved, tarmac or concrete driveway, path or patio. Resin Overlays provide a highly cost-effective and quick way of replacing the surface in the Garden or on the Driveway. As well as being aesthetically pleasing and highly durable, the benefits include: Being both solvent and odour free, during and after application - Restricting growth of weeds - Eliminating loose stones Being environmentally friendly - Compliance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
How is it done?
We initially prepare the existing surface using a high-pressure jet washer system and primer, before applying your chosen resin stone combination. The overlays typically take 1-2 days with minimal inconvenience.
Finishing
We also offer a range of natural or blended stone and surrounding landscaping options including moon stone to truly personalise your resin installation.

Report from Stuart Hutchinson: West Wight Ward. White Acre, Main Road, Wellow, Yarmouth PO41 0TD Tel:760048 email stu.hutch@btinternet.com. Over the last few weeks the Council has been consulting on proposed changes to our Library Service. About 3 years ago, following a consultation, the status of 5 of the 11 libraries changed to what’s called Community Libraries. Funding for these is provided by Town and Parish Councils with volunteers helping to run the libraries, and fundraising. These Libraries are independent of the Council Library Service. The volunteers receive training and support from the council’s central library staff. Because of the goodwill and commitment of those volunteers (and their hard work!) the model has proved very successful.
with my very first “proper” job as a library assistant in a small branch library in Leicester City. As well as the usual duties of checking books in and out, helping people find what they wanted and the constant re-shelving of books, I also had to regularly light and refuel the two big coal stoves that kept the library warm!
It’s now proposed to extend it to 3 other libraries, at Cowes, Ventnor and our own library at Freshwater. The proposal for these Libraries is slightly different; they would remain within the library service but become Community Supported Libraries. That means they still retain access to all Island Library Service facilities (and through that, national library facilities) and will have a member of the Council’s library staff on duty. But volunteers would help to run the library and the local community, through friends organisations and financial support from Town and Parish Councils, would meet the overheads of running the building, such as rates, utilities, cleaning and maintenance.
We have no choice. Whilst we have to deliver a statutory core library service - over threequarters of the demand on the Island is met through just 3 libraries at Newport, Ryde and Sandown - there is no obligation to provide a service in every locality; that is discretionary.
One of the options also being looked at is a slight reduction in the opening times, from 24.5 to 21 hours each week. The changes would save the Library service about £280,000 a year. But most importantly it keeps a local, vibrant and valued service going. I have to declare an interest here, I am very fond of the Library Service, it provided me 4
So I do know from personal experience how people value their local library and how appreciative they are of it’s service. That begs the question; if we know it is so valued why are we making these changes and cutting costs so much?
It’s the discretionary element of the council’s funding that always takes the cuts because we are legally obliged to meet statutory requirements. The largest and fastest growing of these is adult social care. Paying for residential care for each elderly person costs about £25,000 a year. If just 50 more people across the Island each year cannot afford to pay for their own care (and few can) it means we have to find a cash equivalent to the annual cost of the whole library service. And the big problem as, we all know, is that we have a rapidly growing elderly population. It’s easy to remember the numbers; in 6 years time one person in six will be over 75. That’s where most council spending will go. As always, I’m here to help in any way I can.

Angel Coatings are proud to be offering this service across the Island. Their Resin Stone Overlaying uses existing surfaces as a base and is suitable to lay over any existing concrete or tarmac and in some cases even paving slabs. It produces a surface which gives the look of a natural gravel area, but one which is firmly bonded, reducing dust levels and inconvenience. It is a non porous products and it also eliminates the growth of weeds and is doesn’t affect existing levels of surfaces in any way but it does prevent the ingress of water which is really important in reducing flash flooding.
There are different styles, colours and materials which can be used so they can be easily blended to complement your home’s exterior. There has never been a better time to get this done as Angel Coatings are offering a £100 voucher to spend in Busy Bee Garden Centre with every driveway booked in September. Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support The ‘C’ word is the word no one wants to hear and if it doesn’t affect you directly then it may become part of your life through a family member or friend who is going through it as 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1 in 2 men with other cancers in their lifetime. The word Cancer sends shivers down most spines. Such is its intimidating nature, even with the advances medical science has made in successfully dealing with it; it still retains the fear factor. So having people around who are empathic and able to offer real support can be critical. Usually it is one’s partner and family who provide this; however they too may need support and consideration, which can so easily be overlooked Every person deals with it in a different way but it is important to know that there is support and help out there. Back in 2011 the Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support group, an Island based group was started by fellow travellers to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for radiotherapy treatment.

Monthly News Report by John Medland IW Councillor for Freshwater South The Future of Freshwater Library This leaves a risk that public buildings could I hope that as many people as be sold off if the trust running it went broke. possible will be taking part in To retain the asset in the public domain the the consultation on the future of property should be devolved to the local parFreshwater Library. You can get details of the ish council as freehold and then run by a local consultation at the library or online at www. community organisation. Freshwater Parish iwight.com/Council/OtherServices/Using-the- Council has taken the lead with the Friends of Library/Library-Consultation Freshwater Library to prepare for the changeThe IW Council is proposing that Freshwater Library building is shared and funded by local partners. It will become a “Community Supported Library… a cross between a full community library, entirely managed and paid for by the community and a full branch library which is entirely funded by the council.” There is detailed information on the webpage given above explaining the facts of the library service. The change is being forced on the IW Council by the financial crisis of the continuing central government grant cuts. The consultation for the library will be published in September and the IW Council will make a decision after that. This is the second budget crisis for Freshwater Library. In 2010 it was saved from closure but had the opening hours severely cut. In response the Friends of Freshwater Library was formed. From modest beginnings the group has expanded to put on a series of excellent events in the library when it is normally closed. The mission of “FoFL” as it is known, is the “preservation and development of the Freshwater library and building to provide a community supported facility to house the library and be a centre for arts, culture and heritage, and a social support information and access point’. I am of the view that the IW Council should provide the freehold ownership to the local organisation running the building, not just a long term lease. Trustees I believe will be more motivated to take care of a building that they own rather than maintaining it for someone else .
over.
Under this model it will be possible for the community company running the library to apply for Lottery and charitable grants to restore the rotting wooden structure of our library and improve its facilities so that a wider range of activities can be accommodated. Personally I want the front exterior of the library to be retained as it is one of the most attractive architectural examples in the village. If we succeed in fundraising and carrying out improvements we can make our library a community cultural centre with longer hours and more diverse activities. Whatever happens will be increasingly up to us. In the future the financial support of the IW Council will continue to shrink. For our community library to work it will need all kinds of volunteers, from trustees to gardeners, tea makers to bid writers, and we will need a large base of administrative volunteers to support the single member of staff who will be left in place. If there is any time that you can offer please look at the opportunities available on www.fofl.co.uk . You can also join FoFL as a member or attend one of its monthly public events.
If you have any concerns or questions on local issues please come and see me at my surgery from 10am on the last Friday of the month at the Memorial Hall mini market or write to me at 8 Golden Ridge, Freshwater, or e-mail me at jcmedland@outlook.com.
