So, what else do we do, well ‘Lunchers club’ is a regular at all the guilds, we generally go somewhere different on a monthly basis. Some guilds have walking clubs which involve stopping for coffee, cake and sometimes lunch. Book reading, crafts, flower arranging, gardening, theatre/cinema clubs and we’ve even been known to go on a holiday or two. We regularly have garden parties, coffee mornings and ploughman’s lunches. In fact, a lot of our activities involve some sort of eating or drinking tea!!
If you would like to talk to someone before coming along, please ring 01983 759350 and we can chat and even meet with you before you come to a guild.
There are currently nine guilds on the Island and each one holds a monthly meeting which normally includes a speaker giving us insights into various activities on the island, for example we have had the head gardener from Osborne House and more recently a talk on Film and TV made on the Island. We are a non-religious and non-political guild and are open to like-minded ladies who want to meet new people, have fun, and make new friends.
Freshwater - Methodist Church Hall, 1st Wednesday at 2.00pm
Sandown - Broadway Centre, 3rd Wednesday at 2.00pm
Are you new to the Island, recently retired or just interested in fun, laughter, lunches, walking, outings or something different?
We welcome you to come along to a no obligation meeting, to find out more. A warm and friendly welcome is guaranteed.
Lake - Lions Community Centre, 2nd Thursday at 10.30am
Newport - Parish Centre, Town Lane, 2nd Monday at 2.00pm
The First Step is the Hardest
Sandown - Broadway Centre, 2nd Tuesday at 7.00pm
Why join TG? Well, I can’t answer for you, but I can tell you why I joined... I had recently retired and moved to the Island and didn’t know a soul. I saw an advert for Townswomen’s Guild and thought I would give it a try. The hardest thing was to walk through the door, but I really had no need to worry as I was immediately approached and introduced to others and the rest is, as they say, history.
By Suzie Thurgood
Walking through those doors was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, there is no age restriction and everybody is welcome. You can find details of the Guild in your area on the above advert, and you can also call us to chat and even meet with you before you come to your first Guild. As I said at the beginning of this article, the hardest part was walking through the door and if you don’t feel confident to do it alone, I will walk with you.
Wootton - Methodist Church, Station Rd, 3rd Thursday at 2.00pm
Then TG could well be for you and is a great opportunity to meet new friends and like-minded ladies in your area.
We meet monthly and have nine Townswomen’s Guilds at various locations and times across the island
Bembridge - Methodist Church Hall, 1st Tuesday at 7.30pm
Shanklin - Falcon Cross Hall, 3rd Wednesday at 10.30am
Ventnor - St Catherine’s Church, 3rd Wednesday at 2.15pm
The Townswomen’s Guild have made it their mission to reduce loneliness by encouraging women who feel isolated and lonely to get involved with their local guild. By becoming a member, you will discover the true gift of friendship and that being around like-minded individuals will help to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.

I honestly do not know where this year has gone! If you are a regular reader of this community publication you may remember that the last few years, the September issue front cover has always been dedicated to anything tractor themed. This is partly because I have always had a love of tractors and secondly September is harvesting season and we are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or to the frustration of many but to my delight stuck behind one in traffic. I will be showing my age here, but I remember years ago when I was growing up, I looked forward to helping load the bales on to the trailer which in those times were just held on with a bit of rope and then sitting on the top bouncing about as we went along the road. Back then, health and safety wasn’t an issue and at times there could be a few of us on the top of the stack and if any of the bales did fall on the road, then we just stopped and picked them up. In those days everything was just a bit more laid back. There wouldn’t have been moaning, honking of horns or even road rage when this happened, just acceptance that your journey may be delayed by a few minutes. Imagine how this would be greeted on Coppins Bridge now!!

Visitors are key to our Island economy that is so dependent on tourism. Each one contributes significant spending to Island businesses from accommodation to entertainment to food. Of course, this substantial influx of visitors brings with it the annual overloading of our resources, roads and infrastructure – nothing new in this regard but with the relaxation post-Covid, numbers are high and perhaps we have become somewhat accustomed to a quieter world. What many are struggling with is the combination of additional traffic and roadworks, and in particular with the overloading of parking facilities. Local roads around the West Wight are largely unrestricted parking and most would wish to keep it so, but times have changed, cars are larger, many households built with no garage or driveway now have two vehicles, more front gardens are driveways with dropped curbs, all adding to the rapid loss of on street parking.
one car parked on the common rapidly escalated to others following, some at speed and without regard to the safety of pedestrians and animals and reports of several near-misses. Nearby residential closes are consumed with examples of blocked driveways and Colwell Road can become a single lane run. We all want to support accessibility for those less able, but the sight of a car with a blue badge parked on the corner of a junction – half on the side road and half on the main road – really did take the biscuit and the driver simply noted that there should be more reserved disabled parking.
The result in Totland and Colwell has been overflowing car parks and people resorting to parking anywhere they can – even if they surely realise it is inappropriate. Colwell Common has had the most dramatic impact with a solid mass of parked cars and the ensuing slew of resident complaints. Seeing

It may be the end of the summer holidays but local passions remain strong regarding the pressures on the wellbeing of West Wight residents. We are all aware of the common costs of living crisis but local issues are just as important, and this month have focussed on the pressures from high numbers of visitors.
One could take a philosophical approach and await their inevitable large-scale departure in September. For sure the issue will not alleviate itself whilst many visitors bring their cars, local infrastructure is consumed with the loss of on street parking, and households likewise replace front gardens with their once neatly kept lawns and flourishing flower beds with concrete driveways. I would like to think that attitudes will change and we will all become more aware of the impact our lifestyles have, but for the present what is certain is that new estates and developments must plan ahead with much wider roads with inset parking that does not take up highway, and preferably separate pedestrian and dedicated cycle lanes to keep all both safe and moving.

Do you need assistance to have the quality of life that you deserve?
Hosepipe bans were put in place and the evenings were too hot to sleep sometimes but as we are a holiday island, the weather has contributed to a very successful season for a lot of businesses, especially the outdoor activity providers, I went to Colwell Beach several times and it was always packed with holiday makers and locals enjoying the sun, surf and sea. But underneath the warm sunny days of enjoyment there was something that was set in the back of our minds and that is the rising fuel charges, with the giants declaring billions of profit for the first part of the year and there are more to come. I wonder how much and when our government knew about this development and why there was no action to prevent the increase of fuel prices, even now there is nothing proposed as to what they are going to do about it, this is the scary part.
Report from George Cameron - Freshwater 8 and maintenance of our public toilets and many other services to Town and Parish Councils without any funding, plus at the time they kept increasing our council tax, placing a heavier burden on the local councils and the community.
I can give you many examples but one of them is the West Wight Sports Centre who provide an excellent service and is used and supported by residents all over the island, they do not get a penny from the IOW Council but you pay council tax for this kind of provision, leisure funding like this go to the Heights in Sandown and Medina Leisure Centre. So that’s fine but they still need the funding, so Freshwater Parish council have propped them up with money to carry on providing the excellent service they provide. Now that FPC is trying to find the money to keep this grant going and this is where I want to point out that you pay council tax to the IOW Council and also to Freshwater Parish Council for the same service. In my view this is double taxation. This goes for our public toilets as well, at least Freshwater PC is building a new block at Freshwater Bay because the current or old facilities were not fit for purpose. If we were reliant on the IOW council to provide the new toilet block, we would have waited an eternity just for an explanation as to why they cannot provide it. Meanwhile I am sure they are aware that they also live on a holiday Island.
When it gets to this time of year it sometimes feels that summer is coming to an end, and we are trying to grasp the last of the sunshine and warmth it brings with it. This year somehow feels different, and I can only put this down to the extreme heat we had and the weeks of dry weather which has taken its toll on our gardens and open spaces, affecting wildlife.
I highlight this because Freshwater Parish Council is in the process of getting ready to set their annual budget and they are finding it very difficult to provide the services needed for our village plus giving the much-needed grants that are normally applied for. Again, this is not their fault, as you may remember a few years ago the Isle of Wight Council passed the upkeep

That was then: The COVID epidemic has affected all aspects of our community, and FYT bus was no exception, with lower passenger numbers and a reduction in the number of volunteers we need to run our service. Nevertheless, we kept going almost all the way through this difficult period, continuing to serve the community.
This is Now: Your community bus service is seeing passenger numbers increasing both for our regular routes and hospital patient service, as well as hires to local community groups. We are now working hard to update and improve our service, with new vehicles and approaches.
FYTbus fares are competitive and concessionary bus pass holders travel free. For more details see us on the Web: www.FYTbus.org.uk and on @ Totland and Freshwater Community
New Routes: Our routes run between Yarmouth, Freshwater and Totland every weekday. At present they run in the mornings, and we are reviewing our current routes in the expectation that we will reintroduce an afternoon service. We have also received grant funding to trial a local transport initiative which would be more demand responsive. We hope to start this in the New Year. More details to follow. New Vehicles: We have our new electric bus due for delivery in November this year. You will know it’s the new bus, because it will be painted white and it will have the “FYTbus-electric” logo. It will be used on all regular routes to supplement our current busses. We hope to be able to replace all our diesel busses with electric over the next 5 years.
New Management: We have recently reinvigorated our Board of Management with new members, and to provide consistent high-quality management of our service we are recruiting two paid positions. A Garage Manager/Driver to manage the maintenance and cleaning of our vehicles at our Thorley Manor garage; and an Office Manager to ensure the smooth running of our Totland office and to help develop various initiatives. If you or someone you know would be interested please contact us.

Volunteers. We cannot run the service without the help of our dedicated team of volunteers. We need more volunteer drivers, passenger assistants and office assistants to keep our service running. Full training is offered. If you have a spare morning or afternoon and want to help your community, please get in touch.

Recent events have included a visit to Farringford, a talk on reflexology, meals at Island restaurants and walks with lunch. New groups in the pipeline include slow running and jazz appreciation. u3a used to be shorthand for University of the Third Age. Nowadays, as it celebrates its 40th anniversary, the acronym is enough to be instantly recognisable. To mark the anniversary u3a Wight is holding a series of events in September to which non-members are invited.

Isle of Wight u3a has been going in its present form for just three years. In that time two sisters – Carol Bradshaw and Sally Forster – and a small committee have established a membership of nearly 200.
Carol, chair of u3a Wight, says it’s the members who generate the range of opportunities on offer – from playing mahjong to visiting gardens, going on beach walks or improving Spanish.
The aim of u3a is to provide opportunities to people no longer in full-time employment, at a time when they can enjoy learning for its own sake. There are over 400,000 UK members.

Calling all animal lovers…. Your help is urgently needed. The Cinnamon Trust is national charity and a much-needed source here on the island. Their objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They work in partnership with people over retirements age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness to offer all kinds of free pet care. Many elderly or ill pet owners worry about their ability to provide appropriate care for their loved pets and rather than them having to rehome what could be their only companion, The Cinnamon Trust with the help of their amazing volunteers can step in and provide the help that is needed, such as walking the dog for a housebound owner, cleaning bird cages and litter trays and even foster pets while owners need hospital or hospice care. The Cinnamon Trust are looking for volunteers to help island pet owners. They cover the whole island and therefore need volunteers from all areas. They currently have pet owners in Newport and Cowes who are in need of immediate help and support for their beloved dogs who love a good walk. By volunteering you will be supporting the dogs by providing regular exercise to keep them in tip top condition and you will also be taking away a worry from the owner who will no doubt have enough on their plate already.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, you can download the volunteer registration form from the website www.cinnamon.org.uk or email them at appeals@cinnamon.org.uk If you would like to have a more in-depth chat about becoming a volunteer, please call them during office hours (Monday-Friday 9am5pm) on 01736 758 701, or you can find more information on their website.
