April 2016 Your Local Community Magazine
Dear Readers Welcome to the April issue of Island Magazines. At the time of writing this the sun is shining and I’m hoping and praying that finally we are turning the corner and can wave goodbye to the cold spells, rain and wind and look forward to some spring days. This months issue as usual is packed with news, information, advertisers and much more. There are events happening across the Island and you will find details of these on the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section which are on pages 14 and 15. This month we met some new four legged friends in the shape of goats and their kids and this resulted in this month front cover picture and you can read all about our morning with them on page 3. Please always feel free to send me any news or information you have which you would like passed on to readers and if you are organising an event in the future don’t forget to send me the details so I can include them in the next issue. Until next month...

We have a special front cover this month and the star of it is Rookley and his mum Toggie. This little dancing, prancing kid is part of the 50 strong herd of Isle of Wight Dairy Goats, who reside at and belong to The Green Barn. The herd isn’t complete yet as at the time of writing this there are still a couple of mums waiting to deliver.

They are the only commercial dairy goat farm on the Island and these little beauties are responsible for producing the freshest and tastiest goats cheese, milk and fudge on the Island. The Green Barn Isle of Wight Dairy Goats is open to the public and you too can come and see the goats with the kids. The day we went to visit we were lucky enough to have cuddles with some newborns and they are just the cutest. Obviously Rookley wanted to show us how entertaining he could be and was doing some leaps, jumps and generally playing around in his paddock much to amusement of us all. You can easily while away an hour or more just watching these fascinating animals. Whilst visiting the goats you can also visit their onsite farm shop for some wonderful hand crafted gifts as well as the delectable delights of fudge, cheese and milk. They are situated on the Main Road, Bouldnor, PO41 0XN and are open every day.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 After so many months of optimism regarding the installation of the pedestrian crossing on Gunville Road I am pleased to say that work is finally in progress! I understand that the job will take two to three weeks to complete, so by the time you read this it should be up and running. It has been a long fight but will hopefully pay off in the end by providing a safe crossing point on this busy road. Its installation is timely after the announcement in the latest budget from the IOW Council, which states that funding for school crossing patrol persons will be withdrawn from July 2016. This announcement is causing great anxiety amongst parents, but as it is a discretionary service there is no obligation by the council to provide the funding. In these tough financial times there is an opportunity for thinking ‘outside the box’ and for the schools to work proactively with parents to provide new safety measures, be it the involvement of parents and staff to ensure safe transit to school, or the seeking of alternative ways to fund the service by the schools, either way sitting back and assuming it will be taken care of is not an option.
always be the case, it could have been a child and the result far worse. My neighbouring Councillor, Julie Jones Evans, is spearheading the 20 mph campaign, for which she has my total support and I would recommend that you sign up to this as we need to add as much weight to our case as possible. Please look at this website and you will see that we, in Newport on the Island, are not the only people seeking this solution. (www.20splentyforus.org.uk.) You can contact Julie about this as well on Julie. jones-evans@iow.gov.uk and please copy me into your communications.
I travelled to Winchester with some colleagues a couple of weeks ago to attend a meeting regarding the Devolution proposals. There seems to be a discussion regarding whether there should be a Mayor to represent the area (a bit like London), it seems a bit strange to me but I imagine it could have benefits. The other idea is for Southampton and Portsmouth to have a Mayor (possibly including the IOW) but it is still all very much up in the air. My interest is more about the ultimate financial benefits there may be for the Island, as without I am researching possibilities, as I am very these benefits there can be no good reason aware of the need, especially after several reports of incidents in just the last month. I to devolve, other than economies of scale. cannot guarantee a solution, but would urge Should devolution happen it is with the you to contact me if you have any ideas. One intention of the devolved area keeping 100% it business rates, but forgoing the Revenue thing I would promote is your involvement Support Grants and other grants from Central in the campaign to reduce speed limits in our urban areas, particularly in Carisbrooke Government. How this will work is still being where we have limited pavement space and formulated, but those who are calculating in places none at all. I know that more than the financial aspects of this are firmly of the opinion that we would be much better off as one person has been clipped by the wing mirror of a passing vehicle, and although no an area. To find out more visit www.hants.gov.uk/corporatestrategy/ serious injury has occurred this might not devolution-prospectus.htm. 4

Isle of Wight Tae Kwon-Do Club Tae Kwon-Do is a Korean martial art that was inaugurated in 1955 so it is a very modern art which is now practised worldwide. By learning and developing techniques such as blocking, punching, striking and kicking, students learn the invaluable things they need to protect themselves and others in a violent situation. The club also teaches pressure points, locks and throws to give an excellent all round system.
The club has been established since 1998 and in that time has produced regional, national and even world champions. It has also seen over 50 students promoted to Black Belt and beyond. Classes now run 7 days a week across the whole island and beginners are always made to feel welcome. Students can start from as young as 5 years old. All of our instructors are experienced and fully qualified as well as having passed First Aid, Health & Safety and Child Protection courses. Also all of our instructors and assistants have had the enhanced DBS checks done. Training consists of technique training including pad work, fitness, stretching, self-defence techniques, traditional patterns and sparring. Whether you are looking to learn martial arts, get fitter, increase confidence or just meet new people then please contact us or come along to one of our venues and see for yourself. The first lesson is free and for further information see our main advert.

The Importance of Colour as We Grow Older With older age comes a greater likelihood of eyesight conditions, as well as being on medication, having a form of dementia, and perhaps all of these things combined. What the eye sees, the brain must interpret, and this can vary given different circumstances, type and progression of dementia, and abilities. Understanding that an older person with or without dementia will probably perceive their surroundings differently, is a good starting point for the design of living environments. Good design can help enormously in making it easier to interpret and navigate a building in safety, and the use of colour and contrast can be used in different ways to assist in this.
Contrast is the key to vision.
Blue – restful and has a calming effect, a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms
High contrast - When we want to draw attention to something important, greater contrast helps to highlight it. For example, a coloured and contrasting toilet seat helps with positioning; stairs can be made safer with a contrasting strip along the front edge; grab rails can be located; the outlines of furniture can be seen more clearly
Green – the most restful colour, also a popular choice for sitting areas and bedrooms, plus waiting rooms and clinical areas to help reduce stress Red – increases brain wave activity, can stimulate the appetite and produce adrenalin. It is frequently specified in dining areas but dementia patients can have problems seeing the red end of the colour spectrum Orange – this warm colour has a similar effect to red
If there is no contrast, objects cannot easily be seen and differentiated. Contrast is vital in being able to comprehend the environment and understand the features and elements that we need to use in our ordinary daily lives. As we age we lose the ability to differentiate colours clearly, our perception of depth diminishes, there is a loss of visual acuity, we have less spatial awareness and our sensitivity to contrast lowers. Without good contrasts, the world becomes more hazy, we struggle more and more to make sense of it and we function in life with less confidence.
Low contrast - The opposite effect can be achieved by lowering the contrast. e.g. a white door on a white wall. This is also a useful way of making floorings safer, by keeping to a single colour over different floor finishes, or making changes in the floor colour gradually rather than suddenly. It is the sudden contrast which can make the floor levels look uneven, like a step, and this can cause hesitation and unsteadiness which can lead to falls.
Violet – this combination of colours from opposite ends of the light spectrum does not appear to have a consistent effect on mood A large or busy pattern can confuse the eye, and again cause hesitation if it looks like an obstacle or a hole. Shiny finishes can look Yellow – a stimulating colour, ideal for activity areas, can make small rooms appear unsafe, so a matte flooring is preferable and people can walk more safely. larger.

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: Julie.Jones-Evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans It has been a really mixed bag in Newport this last month, with the Isle of Wight Council taking some really difficult decisions in order to create a balanced budget for this coming year. Whilst the Parish Council has picked up some of the services from the IW Council , it is just not possible to take them all. Westminster House is one such area of concern. This is a place which provides welcome breaks for adults with learning difficulties and/or physical disabilities. It’s been running for many years now but has been signalled to reduce what it offers to clients, as a money saving option. I went for a visit this week and was impressed by the homelike atmosphere it had, it really didn’t feel institutionalised and I can see why it is so loved by staff and the people that go there. I’m doing what I can to help resolve this situation.
Residents of Mill Street and Old Westminster Lane are reporting difficulties with the new link road to Foxes Road, near Sainsbury’s. I have had several discussions with the IW Council and Island Roads to come up with a viable solution. I am very hopeful of a resolution but as with all these things I’ll wait until I see it in writing before I announce anything. Meanwhile please keep in touch if you live around the area and are experiencing problems.
From May a few changes will be happening to waste collections. For some properties, wheelie bins aren’t suitable and an alternative option is to use gull-proof sacks. These, like the bins, are provided free and will be colour coded; green for recycle, black for non-recycle, and blue for paper and card. You simply leave the sack out with the polythene bags of waste put inside (though paper and card can go in loose) and the sacks will be collected and emptied. They are then brought in for re-use. They are weighted so as not to blow away when empty. A booklet This is just one local example of the realities will be sent to every one of the 70,000 or of our much reduced settlement from Central so households on the Island explaining the Government and whilst many people recognise changes. That should be with you by the first the need to balance the nations books the week or two of April. Island has a great need for extra funds. There has been a campaign launched by the County Press called “Fight for the Wight”, a people’s campaign to alert London of our plight. Look out for petitions in local shops or go online to www.fightforthewight.co.uk to sign and show your support. On a different note I am organising a “Clean up for the Queen” on Friday 15th April ,which is a national campaign to litter pick local areas that need a bit of attention to help celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday (21st April) Please get in contact if you would like to help out or nominate an area that you feel could benefit. 8
I went to the 20 MPH conference in London recently and was really inspired by the event and the growing amount of communities that
Monthly Report from Julie Jones-Evans. continued are now living in safer , slower speed areas. It is a massive public health issue too, as slower speeds meant more people can take to the streets on foot and cycle with more confidence on the roads. I feel so strongly that our roads which used to link our communities now serve to divide them. Almost half of all households in Newport Central do not have a car ( the highest on the island) so that is an awful lot of people walking, cycling or perhaps using a mobility scooter, not counting all the people that work and shop in Newport. It makes total sense that our town should aim for 20 mph and I include Carisbrooke in this too as does Cllr Hobart and residents. At the Green on Wight Conference in Cowes it was also talked about as a way of improving life for everybody and it is proven that tourists like slower speeds too, so they can enjoy the environment more.
