To Residents of Newport Central My name is Steve Hastings. You might have seen in the County Press or heard locally of our campaigns on behalf of residents of Newport Central which I am fighting alongside residents. As an experienced Councillor I know what to do and how to do it, so with me you will get less talk and more action. I have started two petitions recently, one for a Pedestrian Crossing on Mill Street for the safe crossing of the road by elderly, disabled residents and families with young children on what has become a “Rat Run” to avoid the town centre. The second is for the return of the Post Box in Sylvan Drive, which again disadvantages the elderly and vulnerable and is in danger of creating a two-tier society, those who can walk half a mile for a post box and those who cannot. I am making good progress and I am determined to succeed on both. Also at the request of residents I am helping with some parking issues and speeding vehicles. Now the time has come when I need to ask for your support to take these issues further as your Ward Councillor.
I am the Conservative Candidate for Newport Central and would ask that you use your vote on May 4th and place your X by my name on the Ballot Paper. Promoted by Ian Ward, on behalf of Steve Hastings, both of IWCA 58 The Mall, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 1BW.

Dear Readers Welcome to the April issue and I can’t quite believe where this last month has gone! Signs of Spring are popping up everywhere, with bursts of colour from daffodils, crocuses and spring flowers on hedges and banks all around the Island. The Island is coming alive again and many tourist attractions will be opening their doors as the Easter seasons begins. There are a variety of events happening across the Island during April, and you will find details of these on pages 18 and 19. As the weather is getting warmer and whilst many people are taking this opportunity to sit and relax in the sun please can I urge you to read the article on page 17 to ensure you stay in the best of health. I hope you enjoy this months issue which is packed with news and information and I look forward to catching up with you next month and I hope you all have a Happy Easter.

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I spent a very enjoyable morning with residents of Homewight House recently, listening to their concerns and ideas for improving life in Newport. I am pleased to say we are all on the same page and I am already working on solutions for many of the issues that were raised. 20mph and a network of dropped curbs and speed tables which enable pedestrians to cross a road more easily, whilst also slowing down traffic, are 2 measures that we all agreed would make a huge impact in the area. I am looking forward to visiting St Cross Court soon, to listen to the residents and work with them to resolve any issues. I had the honour to be the 100th person to be trained by Shopmobility, which is a Newport based charity which hires out mobility scooters. They are located by the bus station and provide a life line to many people who are able to use a scooter to do their shopping, go to the library, meet
friends and so on. It only costs a few pounds to hire a scooter and is even cheaper if you become a member. The best thing is the free training that they offer to anyone, so it is a good idea if you have just got a scooter or are thinking about getting one. Even though I don’t need one and I drive a car, I felt really nervous about going out on the streets of Newport on a scooter. But after some indoor training I was given enough confidence to go out. What was interesting was how uneven our pavements are, how people don’t see you on a scooter, being low down means you can’t see around you so well and the network of crossing point could be so much better. I am now on a mission to make sure our environment is fit for our most vulnerable of people. If a person with a mobility or sight issue can navigate safely around the town then it is safe for all users. Getting the cars to slow down and encourage less of them into town is a massive step to creating a pleasant environment for all. Sticking to the theme of transport, I took part in a Street Survey event with Year 4 students at Newport C of E primary School. This was hugely enjoyable as we all learnt about how to

Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans continued create places for people rather than traffic using different types of traffic calming measures, from speed bumps to street art. Caesars Road was chosen by the school to look at how things could be improved and the children took the time to monitor the traffic and really think about how the road could be made better. There were some radical plans like knocking down a few houses and creating a block of flats and a park, to some simple interventions like road platforms to slow the cars down and more bike parking. I hope there are some future councillors in Year 4 as they have got some really good ideas about how they would like Newport to be in the future. JOHN HOBART
VOTE FOR ME IN THE MAY ELECTION 4TH MAY I have had the honour of representing Carisbrooke and Gunville for the past 7 years and want to continue the work that I have started in the area that I love so much. I am standing as a Conservative, but I am motivated by doing the best that I can for this beautiful area and the people that live here.
Since representing you I have made progress in the following areas. • Flooding issues: working with Environment Agency and Southern Water to upgrade trash screens and CCTV monitoring along Lukely Brook. Three new bridges allowing better water flow. Formation/training of flood watch volunteers with NPC. With Newport Rivers to improve water quality of Gunville Stream and Lukely Brook. I aim to ensure that a flooding crisis like that of Christmas Eve 2013 cannot occur again. • Crossings: Achieving the installation of the crossing at the shop on Gunville Road and upgrades to the crossing at the Co-Op in Carisbrooke High Street. • Pavements and Footpaths: Installation of pavement at Gunville Road. Gating and improvements to the footbridge at the Hollows. Working with IWC, LAF and Island Roads to upgrade urban and rural footpaths, (N54 just completed) in the area to highest standards possible with the limited budget allocated. • School Patrols: Ensuring, with help of NPC, that school crossing patrols remain in place after the council cuts.
Should you choose to re-elect me as your councilor again this year I will: • Carisbrooke Road Crossing: Continue to strive for the installation of a permanent crossing to serve the schools, doctors surgery and businesses in Carisbrooke with increased safety, and work to ensure funding remains for School Crossing Patrols. Work towards a greenway from Sainsburys to Gunville • 20’s Plenty: Support the 20’s Plenty Campaign for reduced speeds in our village and by schools and shops. • Traffic flow and road drainage: Seek a solution to the pedestrian safety and traffic flow issues on Clatterford Road and ensure that improved road drainage is engineered both along this and Gunville Road. • Rivers, Streams and Flooding: Work with Environment Agency, Southern Water and Newport Rivers to continue improving our clean rivers, flood defenses and road surface drainage. • Car Parking: Endeavour to find ways of improving the resident’s parking in and around the ward. • Resident Support: Continue to make myself available to help with resident’s individual issues as and when they arise.
I have responded to individual requests for support across many areas including planning, social care, education and attend local groups to discuss issues with residents. I serve on Newport Allotments Group,on Newport Rivers, LAF, and AONB Steering Committee. I am a trustee of Carisbrooke Castle Museum.

To Residents of Newport East
My name is Beverley Hastings and I am standing in the Isle of Wight County Elections in May 2017 as the Conservative candidate for Newport East.
I come from an Island family and have lived in several Island towns, but I now live locally here in Newport where I have been actively involved in local community issues. I have wide employment experience including being a Special Police Constable for six and a half years and CEO of a hygiene company. For over 10 years I was a Venture Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Leader and have done voluntary work and fund raising for a Hospice, The British Heart Foundation and on a Domestic Abuse Committee. I am concerned about victims of domestic abuse and actively work with others to reduce this troubling matter on the Island. As your voice in the council and part of the Island Conservative team I will work with partner agencies and Government to address the challenges we face and develop a solution for the Isle of Wight. I hope you will support me as your Councillor at the County election in May. My commitment to you is that I will do my best to support and represent you, working ethically, with professionalism and integrity at all times. Keep knitting... You may remember in last month’s issue we did a feature on knitted squares and strips for animals in need. Organiser of this wonderful cause is Samantha English and she has had a good response from the article and would like to say a big “thank you to you all”. We still need you to keep knitting and crocheting, as there are still plenty animals who need a blanket. So far Samantha has had donations of over 550 squares and has sewn together a total of 57 blankets and has sent parcels to over 13 places so far including, Cats Protection, PDSA, Ability Dogs, Friends of the Animals, Manchester Cats and Dogs home and NWAT as well as others. She has received certificates, emails and letters of thanks for all the hard work put into these blankets of love. To find out where to send the squares you can email Samantha at blanketsofanimals@ gmail.com or go to the Facebook page. Fakeaways are the New Takeaways We are all beginning to understand the importance of healthy eating and this doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite indian takeaway - instead you need a fakeaway... why should you miss out on a little of what you fancy. The advantages are you can make them healthier and they are good for the wallet. This month I have called upon the experts and below you will find a mouthwatering curry recipe from Four Seasons Cookery Academy. Turkey Korma© 2 Turkey Breast Steaks cut into cubes 1 Onion – diced Good Squeeze Garlic Puree/4 cloves fresh Garlic finely chopped 1 large Tablespoons Korma Spice Blend 1 Chicken Stock Cube – preferably low salt - (crumbled) www.cookeryacademy.co.uk 1 handful dessicated Coconut 1 small Tub Half-fat Crème Fraiche 1 Red Apple – cored – cut into wedges and then halved – (peel on) Gently fry the Onions and Garlic in a smidge of Olive Oil until Onions are soft. Add Korma Spice and cook gently for a couple of minutes. *Always cook spices early on in the dish to allow flavours to develop*. Add Turkey and cook until browned (approx 8 minutes). Keep stirring so that it doesn’t stick to the pan If it starts to stick, add a little of the Crème Fraiche to avoid adding more oil. Add the Apples, Stock Cube and Creamed Coconut and cook gently for approximately 5 – 10 minutes until Apples have slightly softened. Remove pan from the heat and stir through the Crème Fraiche. Re-heat gently and serve with Wholegrain Rice. Curries are always thought of as being ‘fattening foods’ and indeed they can be. A message to residents of Parkhurst Ward from Cllr Richard Hollis For the last 8 years I have been your representative at County Hall. I have taken up many issues on your behalf including saving the Playing field at Hunnyhill School from being used as a road, representing residents views about the two massive Wind Turbines being sited on the hill above Parkhurst Prison and getting the residential part of Forest Road designated as a 40 mph limit. I am well known in the Council for speaking up against inappropriate Planning Applications and I have been a leading voice in recognising the threat to our High Tech Marine Industry on the River Medina which is vital to our Island’s economy and the threat to Newport by out of town Supermarkets. I serve on the Licensing Committee, the Appeals Committee and on Newport Parish Council. I am seeking a solution to the chronic parking problems around Hunnyhill School at drop off and pick up times, which effects the Albany Estate and the roads near the school, Whitesmith , Albany and Worsley. I am seeking a solution to dumped cars in the ward. I am supporting Camp Hill Sports Club to secure their future and secure the land adjacent to them for a much wanted Playing Field. Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. Mobile: 07717 716 663 At last spring appears to be on its way and Carisbrooke and Gunville are starting to look very jolly as the spring flowers come into bloom, serving to remind us what a lovely village have! It was a pleasure to meet up with my colleague Cllr Whitehouse to review the new surface on the footpath N54, Purdy Road to Priory Pond. We are delighted that our efforts were successful in bringing this resurfacing forward on the calendar and the result is a passable and pleasant route for the many children heading for school and people going into the village. I am continuing to apply pressure to IWC and Island Roads to get the remaining stretch (N60/N64), from the pond to the village and schools, through the churchyard brought up to a higher standard as it is still sporting puddles and also needs a proper surface on it.

If you are interested in getting involved please contact Newport Parish Council: clerk@ newportwight.org.uk telephone: 01983 559119 As a supporter of the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) and a member of the Newport Rivers Group, I spent a very enjoyable few hours at their annual lunch and I was invited to join them on the following Sunday at their Litter Pick, conducted along the Medina River. It was sad to see just how much litter people leave behind them with no thought for others or the landscape. Only the other day I was reading a letter in the CP written by a visitor to the Island. She states that the island is not what it used to be as she saw so much litter everywhere which she did not recall from previous visits. I believe that it falls to us all to be mindful about litter and to either pick it up or call Island Roads whose responsibility it is to keep our roads and verges tidy.

Fake it - don’t bake it! Cancer... it’s a devastating disease and can attack anyone and skin cancer alone comes in many forms and some people don’t realise that Melanoma is the most aggressive and deadliest. You see a mole that may have changed colour or size, and you get it checked out and they remove it, and if you are very lucky this might be the end of your cancer story but for many this is just the beginning. Local business owner, partner, mum, daughter and friend, Debbie Keynes first noticed a lump on her head and her nurse’s intuition kicked in and she sought medical help and was told that she must do an agonising 4 week wait to see if any changes occurred. Nothing good came from waiting and after lots of tests, biopsies and anxious waiting Debbie was diagnosed with Melanoma. She has now undergone surgery to remove the cancer along with 37 lymph nodes, Debbie’s head and neck resembles a patchwork quilt boasting a total of 56 stitches. She is a constant visitor to the hospital, racking up well over 20 appointments. Her long brunette hair hides the bald patch that will always be a constant reminder of what she has fought and what she will continue to fight every day of her life. Debbie has recently had another CT scan and the Melanoma has spread and she is now receiving immunotherapy every 3 weeks at Southampton General – so her battle is still very real but she is continuing to fight it...
Debbie knew that pushing her doctor and specialists to ensure she got the diagnosis as fast as she could would greatly increase her chances and she insists that anybody who has a lump, changes in a mole or anything which could be a trigger to seek medical advice immediately and not to ignore it. International Health organisations agree that sun exposure and sun beds are the main causes of skin cancers. The recent increase in the number of people taking last minute cheap holidays abroad may contribute to the rising number of melanoma cases. People who receive the highest exposures to the sun have about 20-35% higher risks of melanoma, but sun burn at any age doubles the risk of malignant melanoma. Help yourself by using lots of sun cream, staying in the shade and wearing a hat. Remember the sun is at its deadliest between 11am and 3pm. Debbie is in a support group and she has watched fellow sufferers lose the battle and some of these people have been in their 20’s and 30’s so its not a mature persons disease – cancer has no age limit. Her business DSK Training is an Island based company which specialises in health and social care training and Debbie has taken on a challenge to educate as many people as possible to bring awareness to this deadly disease and is offering training courses to businesses and groups, especially hairdressers and beauticians who may see the signs before anyone else. The profit from these courses will go directly to Melanoma UK. For more information and contact details go to www.dsktraining.co.uk 17

A Message to Residents of Newport West Ward From Chris Whitehouse Dear Resident For four years as your local councillor I’ve tried to help everyone who wanted my assistance. We opened up Chapel Street to get into Newport more easily. We’ve got new buildings for both our high schools, Carisbrooke College and Christ the King. Some of the ‘swampy’ local footpaths are being resurfaced. Much work’s been done on Lukely Brook to prevent a repeat of the flooding. I’ve been pressing for action on parking since the building work started at Christ the King College. I’m hoping to get Taylor Road opened for buses and to have them pick up children there rather than in Wellington Road. I am pressing for action on parking in Caesars Road. Improving all our Island schools is my priority. We’ve made real progress through the strong leadership shown by the Head of Carisbrooke and Medina and the Principal of Christ the King. I will continue to serve the local community, putting its interests above those of party politics. I can’t promise I’ll solve every problem, sometimes it’s just not possible, but I will always try my best to help.
