April Facts and Historical Events. We know it is the fourth month of the year, but that’s only by the Gregorian calendar that we adhere to now. It was previously the fifth month in the earlier Julian calendar. April also only had 29 days, but a 30th day was added when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar. The etymology behind the word “April” comes from the verb “aperire,” which means “to open.” It’s commonly believed that the word refers to the season of trees and flowers begin to “open” or bloom. Those who were born in April have a diamond as their birthstone, which represents innocence. Their birth flower is either a Daisy or a Sweet Pea. There are two zodiac signs in April. Aries, which is until April 19th, and Taurus, which is April 20th and onwards. April is a great month for meteor showers. One of which is the Lyrids meteor shower, which appears from April 16th to April 26th each year. There are quite a few notable historical people born in April, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Shakespeare, and Queen Elizabeth II. On April 14, 1912, the famous Titanic ship hit an iceberg and sunk on her first and only voyage. George Washington was inaugurated as the First President of the United States on April 30, 1789. Of course, one of the most well-known dates of April, is April Fools’ Day on the 1st of the month. No one is sure where this originated from, but some believe it to be inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer’s story in “Canterbury Tales” called “Nun’s Priest’s Tale.” On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 was launched and ran into difficulties about two days later. It was then that the famous line “Houston, we’ve had a problem here” was said, and is today usually misquoted. After a 1,500 year break, the first Olympics of the modern era took place on April 6, 1896, in Athens. The explosion of the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine occurred on April 26, 1986, which forced everyone within a 300-mile radius to be evacuated. And of course, as we all know, “April showers bring May flowers,” so if the rain of April ever gets you down, never forget the silver lining! 2

Welcome to the April issue of ‘your local community magazine’. Our aim each month is to bring you the latest news and information for your area along with interesting articles and features. We have some great local businesses offering a variety of services and products, there is hopefully something for everyone. Like many others, I am extremely proud to live here, and it is amazing watching our communities pull together as one when another part of the world has been torn apart by war. The Isle of Wight, stepped up to the mark and rallied together donating items to be taken to the border of war-torn Ukraine and going one step further by opening their homes and offering shelter. When we all work together so much more can be achieved. Whilst writing this the weather outside is not feeling very Spring like, in fact it’s quite wet and cold. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the sunshine is on its way, that over the Easter period we will be able to soak up some vitamin D, enjoy some picnics, and dare I say it get the BBQ out ready for the season! There are events happening in both the local area and across the island and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13 has a variety of events listed. If you have an event happening in May, please be sure to email the information so we can include it in the next issue. I hope you all have a great Easter, whether it’s the time off or the chocolate you are most looking forward to. I hope it’s a great one and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Very exciting news regarding the Tour of Britain that sees the final leg of this prestigious cycling event, watched by millions of people worldwide, staged on the island on 11th September. Part of the race will come through the centre of Newport and will be quite a spectacle. At Shaping Newport, we have already started to discuss what we can do in town to enjoy the day and we are looking at having a weekend of car free focused activities, such as a bike show, road closures to have outside dining, family games, pop up parks, food and craft markets. I’ll keep you posted. Jubilee celebration organisations are going well with the main focus being on the Saturday Parade which is shaping up to be quite impressive with vintage cars, motorbikes, scooters, schools, skaters and much more. Platform 1 will have a music stage going all day in St James’ Square and the screens will be showing the events in London, so we don’t have to be at home to watch and can join in the fun in town. Newport Business Association members that have shop windows will be dressing them in the style of what the shop was in 1952 or in their favourite decade of the Queen’s reign. The whole town will be getting involved and we encourage anyone coming in on the Saturday to dress up in their favourite decade’s fashions and anyone can get involved in the parade – email laura.cansdale@iow.gov.uk for the details. 64 High Street is progressing well, there’s a lot of planning and research to be done but the local architects we are working with are

doing a brilliant job and I promise you all that we will have a public asset that we can all be proud of. To have a shop that size back in use for and behalf of the community will be a shot in the arm for the High Street. I understand that the old post office will be another restaurant and bar opening up in the summer. Talking of Post Offices, I am meeting with executives from the PO in April to look at a couple of properties to assess their suitability for a replacement post office for central Newport. It has been so disappointing that no one has come forward in 14 months to take up the opportunity, however it’s such a vital service Shaping Newport has taken a proactive role in bringing the PO back. Councils are not legally able to run Post Offices so if any of the sites are suitable then we will need to address that issue as well as find the funds which could be up to £50,000 to set the PO up, so still a way to go but we’re taking it step by step. The doctor’s surgery relocation is another hot topic for us and I can assure you that I am working with colleagues at the IWC to retain the service in the town centre.

Spanish Conversation Sessions Ginny developed a love of Spain in her early 20’s when she found a job in a bar in a little Town in the Costa Brave region of Spain. She then met a lovely lady who ran a club in a Ski resort in the Spanish Pyrenees. It was a huge adventure going to work up in the beautiful Pyrenees, where she learnt to Ski and to speak Spanish. Ginny says, ‘ No one was allowed to speak to me in English, so I had no choice but to learn their language!’ After 7 years of living immersed in the Spanish culture she returned to the UK, but she never lost her love of Spain and retained many Spanish friends, her daughter then moved to Mallorca and has lived there ever since. Ginny feels a passion for the Spanish language and wants to help other people who want to practise their spoken Spanish. Ginny says, ‘I can help with pronunciation and generally chat in the real way that Spanish people speak, not the way they are taught from a text book’! She has taken a Spanish Diploma with the Open University too.

News Report from Cllr Joe Lever - Carisbrooke & Gunville Mobile - 07736 663 657 Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk Facebook - @CllrJoeLever The planning application - already partially considered by the planning committee - for new housing opposite Gunville Methodist Church should be going back to committee in the near future. So, if you live near that site and have some thoughts, please do get in touch. I want to make sure any representation I make at the planning committee considers resident views and sentiment.

your say, then you can do so through the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust website: www.hiwwt.org.uk

If you take a wander down to Vectis Field some time, you should now see the new football pitch markings and also a new tree line - part of the Queens Green Canopy initiative - in front of the small copse to the north-east corner. If all goes well, there will be seven new trees (one for each decade of the Queen’s reign), some small saplings and eventually some wildflower too.

As always, if you need to get in touch, please use the contact details at the top of this page.

There’s been a fair amount of public interest and local media coverage recently regarding Island Roads’ decision to return to the use of glyphosate weedkiller. Residents are rightly concerned about the prospect of blanket spraying by quad bikes again. Green councillors and others are pressing for a more sympathetic approach to spraying whilst Island Roads look for suitable Mobile - 07736 663 657 alternatives. We’ve had assurances that only Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk targeted road and pavement applications Facebook - @CllrJoeLever will be undertaken; keeping wildflower areas & verges clear, as to not adversely impact wildlife. Continuing on the theme of wildlife, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Trust are currently consulting Island residents regarding the reintroduction of beavers to the Island. If you’d like to find out more or even have 6

Lastly, residents of Bowcombe may have noticed their village notice board was removed last year. It will be back in place soon enough; it was just in need of some repair work.

Quick Tips to Save Energy and Money

Free Island delivery on all orders over £15

For months we have been warned that energy prices are going to increase dramatically on the 1st April and although The Island’s largest selection of Fabrics, we are moving towards the warmer months, Wool, Haberdashery and Foam. meaning the heating will be turned off Shop instore at 3-5 Lugley Street, there are still many ways in which we can Newport. (behind Boots) or online at make little changes around the house to www.hellerslea.co.uk or by phone on save a few pounds here and there. We must 01983 526104 also take into account that inflation seems to be everywhere except on our wages, so hopefully we can continue to bring you some money saving tips each month.

1. Do full laundry loads - Half-load settings save very little energy, so a full load is much more energy efficient. Do fewer (but fuller) – wash loads instead and with the warmer weather heading our way put the washing outside on the line or on airers and say goodbye to the energy guzzling tumble dryer. Go one step further… with today’s effective washing machine detergents, there’s often no need to run your washing machine any higher than 30°C – clean clothes, energy saved, job done! 2. Use the eco setting - On your dishwasher or boiler, the eco setting heats water more slowly, using less energy. You get the same results; it just takes a little longer. 3. Don’t use standby mode - Unless switched off at the wall, appliances like your TV continue to use energy. The same goes for the kettle, coffee maker, and food processors which are all easy to unplug. The digital clock on your microwave is using energy. 4. Careful with that kettle - When making tea or coffee, most of us fill the kettle right up. By filling your kettle just to the level you need, it could save you up to a third of the energy you have been using. 5. Switch to LED bulbs - Traditional bulbs are extremely inefficient. Modern LEDs are the opposite, and also last longer so are less wasteful too. 6. Use your microwave more - You’ll save energy because it’s quicker than using the oven or stove. It’s worth considering a slow cooker too, as they’re one of the most energy-efficient kitchen appliances. 7. Unplug all your chargers - Across the country, people are unnecessarily overcharging their mobile phones, MP3 players, and laptops. Instead, as soon as your device is fully charged, try to get into the habit of unplugging it. Not only will this save energy, but it also prolongs battery life.

What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services. There is no need to book to attend an Alzheimer Café, you are welcome to come along to any of the Cafés across the Island (ACE7 is for younger people with dementia aged 45-65 years). News report from Cllr Andrew Garratt for Parkhurst & Hunnyhill Email: andrew.garratt@iow.gov.uk - Tel: 01983 524623 While writing this report, war in Ukraine continues following the Russian invasion, with terrible loss of life and horrendous destruction. As with so many other conflicts around the world, many people have necessarily sought refuge in other countries, the UK included. I am sure we will all do what we can to support and comfort them, while they wait for when the war is over and they can return to rebuild their lives and their country, and to provide help to those who remain in Ukraine. When I wrote my last report, council tax decisions were still being made. By now bills should have been received. In them is important information about the £150 rebate to bill payers of properties in Bands A to D. The government is providing this to help with the enormous rise in our energy bills. If you pay by direct debit, the rebate will be automatically paid into your account by the council. If you don’t then you will need to fill out a rebate application form available from the council. Council tax money goes towards paying local services, together with grants from the government. The services are those provided by Isle of Wight Council, Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Commissioner, and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Authority. In the debate on the Isle of Wight Council’s budget, among the concerns I raised were the effects of proposals 10

to increase WightCare fees by 13%, and to bring in a charge for video-streaming funerals. I was able to persuade the council’s leadership to delay any implementation of these until there had been a chance for consultation and scrutiny, with a decision in May. Council tax is, of course, public money. How it is spent is decided by our elected representatives – councillors like me, the police and crime commissioner, and Member of Parliaments. But that doesn’t mean residents can’t still have a say. Consultations take place throughout the year, most recently on the council’s homelessness strategy, and its ‘masterplan’ for Newport Harbour. Locally, working with the community council and Isle of Wight College, I helped consult on designs by college students for a new mural in the subway under the dual carriageway at the top of Parkhurst Road/Hunnyhill. Meetings of Isle of Wight Council, and Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council have slots for public questions. I encourage residents to use these to get more information or to highlight concerns. For example, at the last Isle of Wight Full Council a question was asked about the renewed use of the weedkiller, glyphosate, on our roads and pavements, which has been linked to harmful effects on wildlife. Cabinet members responded that the use was due to contractual commitments in the Island Roads contract, but they were working to find a sustainable solution. continued over the page

News report from Cllr Andrew Garratt for Parkhurst & Hunnyhill And, of course, all elected representatives can be contacted to raise issues and ask questions. For example, recently, residents have been in touch with questions ranging from fly-tipping, potholes, to delays in installing new streetlights on the prison estates, dog fouling, and road safety. I was also given a fascinating tour around Parkhurst Military Cemetery by a volunteer from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Finally, as ever, please get in touch if there is an issue that affects you – however ‘big’ or ‘small’. I’m very keen to hear views on the revised planning strategy as it enters the next round of debate and public consultation.
