Bringing the Surgery to your Doorstep by Dan Forster The Mobile Vet provides an Islandwide veterinary service in their bespoke mobile vehicles and also have a fully equipped veterinary surgery at the IOW Pet Centre, Watergate Road, Newport. New services on offer include CT scans and laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery. They are the only vets on the Island to offer these services. Laparoscopic surgery is standard for all human patients as it is significantly less painful. The surgery involves operating through two tiny incisions in the abdomen and utilising cameras & specialised tools through the holes. Patients are up and about much faster than an old fashioned spay. No more head collars and owners do not have to take days off work to look after their pet. After securing several awards for customer service & innovation, including a recent Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation and a trip to meet the Queen at Buckingham Palace; the team continue to offer a personalised approach with extended consultation times at the base & in clients’ homes allows the Mobile Vets to connect more with their patients/clients.

Parish Council
Co-option for Newport South Ward - There is a currently a vacancy for a parish councillor in the Newport South ward. For more details of how to apply please contact the Clerk. Prospective candidates will be asked to make a short presentation to the Parish Council on how they can contribute to the Parish Council and the community of Newport South. Living History Project - The Newport Living History Project is putting local heritage and history into the heart of our town. It is a community led project which is collecting the stories and memories of Newport’s past. Along with local historians research, these will then be used as content for an interactive Town Trail; telling the story of Newport in a dynamic way through modern technology. Following a successful display at Riverfest and our exhibition at Lord Louis Library, we have been meeting residents wanting to share their experiences. This has by far been the most rewarding part of the project so far; listening to fascinating recollections of family life not too dissimilar to ours but steeped in the history and heritage of how we used to live. Tales of outside toileting, tin baths and pigs indoors! These are the stories we would still like to hear about. We are still looking for volunteers to take part and help to shape the projects future. Look out for details of our coffee morning coming up soon or contact the Clerk. Donations - At the July meeting the PC were once again delighted to allocate funds towards the John Cattle summer skate boarding sessions in Newport. This year £300 was donated, which will fund the 5 weekly practice sessions for 5 to 18 year olds during the school holidays. 4
Meetings - The Parish Council next full council meeting is on 11th September 2017, 6.45pm at the Riverside Centre. Full Council does not meet in August. Planning and Licensing Committee meet fortnightly, 6.30pm at the Riverside Centre, the meetings in August are on 3rd, 17th and 31st. Devolved Services Committee will meet on 15th August, 6.30pm at the Riverside Centre Social Media Our Facebook page is a great source of information for all parish and community matters. Please like and share our posts as well as sharing your information with us. All full council meetings are now digitally recorded and copies are available on application to the Clerk or can be listened to on the website www.newportwight.org.uk or contact the Clerk, Maxine Yule by email clerk@ newportwight.org.uk or telephone 559119

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 It was great to chat to so many local residents at Carisbrooke Village Fete at the 8 Bells. Our little stand attracted quite a lot of interest and I would like to thank the different organisations involved and NPC for supplying Cllr Martin and myself with such a good selection of leaflets and photos, all relative to our area. The rain at least held off for most of the day after a wet start and a good sum of money was raised on the day. Since our first public meeting on the 18th February 2017, arranged by NPC, the Friends of Newport Cemeteries have arranged two volunteer working parties and are now looking to increase the volunteer database. The Friends of Newport Cemeteries have a website which is most informative and has a searchable list of graves plus history of both the cemeteries and some of the occupants, this can be found on www. foncc.org.uk and is well worth a look. Brian Greening who is the historian is always interested to hear from families about any stories about their ancestors which may be of interest. Look out for a public meeting to be held about this in September. I have recently had another meeting with the highways engineer in regard of the proposed crossing at the bottom of Cedar Hill on Carisbrooke Road. I understand that this is now in the queue for approval and funding consideration. I will of course keep pushing, but at least this means that it has been 6
acknowledged as a need. I am still pressing hard for 20s Plenty along the High Street. I was very privileged to be invited to the opening of Queen Victoria’s Garden Terrace at Osborne. It is a beautiful example of restoration at its best and would urge a visit. I was particularly fascinated by the Shell Seat, the amazing acoustics in one particular place allowed the Queen to overhear the conversations of others, very clearly, some 15 yards away. This must have aided her desire to be in control of all around her!!
Work has started on the Coastal Path. We had a presentation by John Taylor from Natural England, he told us that our section around the Island could well end up being the longest stretch of continuous coastal footpath in the country. This path will be raised to national trail status which will
Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke continued mean that it gets a share of advertising nationally and will hopefully bring many more visitors to the Island. In November Natural England will be hosting a drop in sessions around the Island to update people on the progress that is being made on this project locally. I have asked for Newport to be included as one of these ‘drop ins’ as the first proper crossing point on the Medina River. Our much loved crossing patrol officer, Paul Stevens, was one of the stars in a marvelous open air performance of the Merry Wives of Windsor, staged at Carisbrooke Castle. It was an excellent performance and great to be sitting in the courtyard as the sun went down behind the castle
Sir George Carey was Governor of Carisbrooke Castle during Shakespeare’s time and as Lord Chamberlain, had exclusive rights to perform his material at the time. I hope there might more such performances perhaps after the rooks have gone to sleep as they make a far too enthusiastic audience!

Perfect Homemade Burgers It’s definitely BBQ season and you can’t beat the taste of a homemade burger. This recipe is just 6 ingredients and takes less than 20 minutes to make so you won’t be tied to the kitchen. This recipe is using beef mince but you can easily substitute it for turkey mince for a more leaner option without losing any of the taste. These burgers can be cooked on the BBQ, under the grill, fried or in the oven. Sandwich your burger between a floury bap or a ciabatta roll, top with fresh lettuce, sliced tomatoes, red onion, cheese and a spread of relish. These will be loved by adults and children alike Top tip: The eggs and breadcrumbs aren’t essential but will help bind the ingredients together. Serves 4 Ingredients • 500g good quality mince • Good pinch of oregano • 1tsp salt • Pinch of black pepper • handful of breadcrumbs or 2 slices of bread • 1 egg, lightly beaten Method 1. Place the ingredients in a large bowl and mix together or whizz all the ingredients in a food processor until the mixture starts holding together. 2. Shape the burgers into round flat discs with wet hands. To get perfectly round shapes, press the mixture into a metal pastry cutter. Don’t over-handle the burgers 3. Place the burgers on the barbecue or in a frying pan and cook until they’re done all the way through and there’s no pinkness in the middle. To check this, press down the top of a burger with a fish slice - if there are pink juices oozing out, then cook for a few more minutes. 4 Serve on a lightly toasted ciabatta with salad and toppings and enjoy!!!

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans A lot has been happening in the last few weeks and I’m pleased to report that I have found a temporary solution for the lack of public toilets near the bus station. Newport Parish Council have agreed to my suggestion of a community school toilet scheme with McDonald’s. McDonald’s are conveniently located near the bus station and are open from 5 a.m. until midnight (11pm Friday and Saturday) means that they are open for longer than the public toilets were. The disabled toilet is activated by a radar key. Initially partnership will be for three months see how it works out for both parties and also gives us opportunity to continue to negotiate with the Isle of Wight Council. It’s important we find a long-term solution to the toilet block at South Street but this needs to be realistic and affordable. I’ll keep you informed of these developments. Another piece of good news, I am able to move forward with creating a better environment in the centre of Newport. As part of my 20’s plenty project I have commissioned a survey of Newport an audit of the streets, width of pavements, drop kerbs or where crossings are, how easy it is to navigate around town if you have a disability. It will also look at where people like to walk and take into consideration what schemes could be developed that will improve pedestrian accessibility in our town. 12
Locations of public seating, benches, shade and shelter will also be looked out it’s important especially for older residents and visitors to ensure there are plenty of places that you are able to rest. The audit will also show where the busy junctions are and which streets would be best to have 20 mph. All this evidence will be important and putting our case to the Isle of Wight council for 20 mph in our residential streets and town centre. It is not certain that the Isle of Wight Council cabinet will ratify the agreement of Full council in October to have a roll out of 20 mph in residential areas across the island. There will be a survey attached to our latest parish council newsletter that hope many of you will take the opportunity to fill out it’s really important that residents have their say on how they want their town to be and 20 mph has had a lot of support but to have that supporting writing from residents will be fundamental to our case to the to the Isle of Wight Council. Also making some good progress on having some art in our town and if anyone’s got any walls they can nominate for some decoration then please do let me know. Newport Business Association in partnership with Newport Parish Council are organising a Christmas fair and we are looking for craftspeople to have stalls in the Minster so again please do get in touch with me or with Maxine Yule at Newport Parish Council telephone 559119.
