What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services. There is no need to book to attend an Alzheimer Café, you are welcome to come along to any of the Cafés across the Island (ACE7 is for people with Young Onset Dementia aged 45-65 years).

Welcome to the August issue and there is no denying that summer is here! Whilst writing this we are in the middle of an amber weather warning for the extreme high temperatures the island is experiencing... like many others I am finding it quite unbearable, but it could be worse - we could be in a built-up city, hours away from the beach and ocean.

This month is set to be a great month on the • Island, as after being absent for a couple of years due to the pandemic we can finally 01983 404 720 say that August is once again Carnival time... Our dates for your diary section on 07850 489 754 www.adriankensit.co.uk pages 12, 13 & 14 is a handy guide to know adrian.kensit@btinternet.com what’s on and when, ensuring you don’t miss any of the fun or if carnivals just aren’t your thing, you’ll know which areas to avoid and when!!!
This month’s issue is once again packed with news, information, local advertising, puzzles and much more. I need to stop looking at this month’s front cover as the temptation to get up and leave the office in search of a 99 with an extra flake is very strong. I have certainly eaten more than my fair share of ice cream during this hot spell, but I believe that by eating them I am supporting local businesses... well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Please keep using the services of local advertisers who advertise with us, and I hope you all have a lovely August, and, on that note, I am off to get an ice cream! See you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Joe Lever - Carisbrooke & Gunville Mobile - 07736 663 657 Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk Facebook - @CllrJoeLever Time for an August update… At the time of writing this, I’ve still not seen any confirmation of when the two revised Arthur Moody Drive/Forest Hills applications will go before the IWC Planning committee. I’m also yet to hear anymore regarding the proposed application behind the old Friends of the Animals shop. Again, although the official consultation period has closed for these applications, you can still submit comments (which will still be registered), should you wish. I’m still pushing for highway improvements in the area, and I’ll be meeting with IWC highway officers and Island Roads staff to discuss plans and costs so we know how we might progress.

iWatch Wildlife Species of the Month August 2022 The iWatchWildlife Project is all about encouraging and supporting the recording and sharing of nature observations on the Isle of Wight. We then convert your sightings into records which help boost the IW Species Records Database. Each month we highlight a species Garden Tiger Moth which we’d like to find out more on how it’s doing locally. During August we are featuring Tiger Moths – there are several Tiger Moth species in the UK, all are stunning with bright colours or patterns, but the most common garden species are the Jersey Tiger Moth and Garden Tiger Moth. August Facts and Historial Events On the 6th August 1762, the first-ever sandwich was created. It was named after the Earl of Sandwich when he requested a dish involving meat between two pieces of bread. As the story goes, he requested it as he was in the middle of a gambling game and didn’t want to interrupt it.

August was a big month for the U.S. Civil Rights Movement. It was on the 28th August 1963, that Martin Luther King Jr gave his famous “I have a dream” speech to 250,000 people on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. Considered to be one of the most iconic speeches in the history of the US, King’s speech called for the end of racial discrimination and for equal rights to all.
There are of course many incredibly famous and important people who have been born in August including Usain Bolt, Madonna, Sean Connery, Barack Obama, Whitney Houston and although not famous, I myself (Debbie).
Unlike most other months, August has just one birthstone – peridot. One of the lesser-known gems, peridots come in shades from grassgreen to a more earthy olive hue.
