This is a fantastic opportunity to create something than can be a great benefit to residents rather than a dangerous waste of space, and everyone can be involved. We also spoke about the road safety of the surrounding area and what could be done to keep residents and especially children safe. For example, there are no signs warning motorists that the park is there and with many children walking to and from school we need to look at making their journey as safe as possible. Speeding issues around the estate were also mentioned. The Nelson Road Park Community Project wants to hear from residents! If you can think of anything that you would like to see in the park, making the area safer or want to get involved please get in touch and email me at jaimie.bundell@gmail.com for more information. 5

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 The results of the Island wide survey on parking are in! I will be meeting tomorrow with other Newport Councillors to discuss the possibility of having residents parking zones in in various areas around Newport and Carisbrooke, particularly where parking is at a premium. Hopefully we are getting nearer to properly addressing the parking issues Island wide….watch this space! It is good to see the foot path to St Mary’s Church from Priory Pond looking so smart now. The overhanging branches have been cleared and the surface is now walkable in all weathers. It’ been a long time coming and my next mission is to work with Cllr Whitehouse to achieve the repairs needed to the stretch from Priory Pond to Wellington Road. It is on Island Roads network…..but needs prioritising! Please feel free to contact Island Roads hub if you are fed up with your children getting covered in mud on their way to school. I attended the Island’s first Digital Conference at Cowes Yacht Haven, it was very well represented and I believe can be a considered a successful event. It was great to hear the news that WightFibre have secured £30m investment to achieve ultra fast broadband and start, building the ‘digital bridge’ that will secure future business opportunities on the Island. Ninety people attended the Newport Harbour Regeneration event at the Bargeman’s Rest on Tuesday 14th November. This event was designed to harvest early stage ideas about how the harbour should be revived. A detailed, and first class, presentation was given by a group of Portsmouth University

architecture graduates who are studying for their Masters degree. We are long off a way off a plan as yet but it’s great to hear lots of ideas ideas and enthusiasm for this very exciting project that will breathe new life into Newport. Very much in the news this month has been the desire to achieve ‘Dark Skies’ status for the Island. I have attended several meetings with Vectis Astronomy, AONB,CPRE and Isle of Wight Society, all of whom favour this. Lower level lighting is also deemed to be healthier for both us as humans, but also wildlife. Areas with this this status have found an increase in their out of season tourism, particularly attracting star gazers and astronomers, so it could be good on many levels. The AONB are currently working towards getting the IOW designated as a ‘biosphere’ which is awarded by UNESCO and would give us international recognition, Dark Skies would help in their quest to achieve this award. November also saw many Services of Remembrance, I attended the wreath laying at the Simeon Memorial in Carisbrooke and also the service at Sts Thomas. As always, very moving, and so important to remember those who gave up their lives for us.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Shaping Newport The Place Plan for Newport has now begun, which will create a vision for how we all want Newport to be. A couple of months ago when I was looking at the Harbour Regeneration plans, I was alerted to the fact that there was no plan as such for the whole of Newport. There are plans for the regeneration of Newport Harbour but this cannot stand alone, it has to knit together as a cohesive part of Newport too. This thought has led to collaboration with IW Council, Newport Parish Council and Newport Business Association to produce a vision plan. Over the next 2 months there will be events, questionnaires in shops, online surveys and meetings to hear from the people that live, work and learn in Newport. The first event will be at the Quay Arts Centre 5th December between 6pm and 10pm. This will be open to everyone and an opportunity to share your thoughts on what you love about Newport and what you feel could be improved. Have a look at the Facebook page “Shaping Newport” and there is also an online survey to take part in which I would encourage everyone to do to input into this chance to shape the place we live. www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ shapingnewport Newport Timebank is making progress with training being undertaken by the team, as you can imagine there is a lot to put in place before it can begin in earnest. Once it has been launched we will be able to match people and their

skills/needs. Timebank is a great concept where people can offer a service such as dog walking in exchange for time credit. They can exchange their hour of dog walking for an hour of learning how to cook for example. It’s been running around the world very successfully and Newport is being helped to get on its feet by West Wight Time Bank who have been amazing in their support. I’ve recently met and been on an estate walk with Sovereign Housing, who merged with Spectrum Housing this year, The 2 New officers for Newport are experienced and also enthusiastic and we have already begun on scoping out a project at Hookes Way to improve the environment for residents. I’ll update you when I have more news. At last we have some progress with Residents Parking Zones, as the IW Council has is about to release the draft policy for consultation, I’ll be examining this very carefully to make sure it meets the needs of residents. Newport councillors are working together to make sure Newport is one of the first areas to apply for residents parking zones in key streets. In Newport Central that would be Caesars Road, Hearne Street, West Street and Clarence Road for example. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Island Magazines for the chance to write and let you know what I’ve been up to, for another year and I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and a joyful 2018. 13

MONDAY 5.30pm and 7.30pm

SATURDAY 8.30am

Weight loss is for life, not just for January! This New Year people across the Island will embark on a bid to lose weight. Kim Street, who runs Slimming World groups in Carisbrooke is urging dieters to ditch fad diets and choose a sustainable weight-loss plan: “People start January with the best intentions but by the end of the month so many have been defeated by hunger or feelings of deprivation. Diets based on deprivation are almost impossible to maintain, resulting in you throwing in the towel and feeling like a failure!”

and 10.30am

Kim explains the key is to choose a realistic healthy eating plan. Slimming World’s Contact Kim on Food Optimising encourages members to 07855 747893 fill up on healthy ‘Free Foods’, including for this delicious burger recipe visit fruit, vegetables, pasta, potatoes and lean slimmingworld.co.uk meat freely without the need for weighing, 0344 897 8000 counting and measuring. It also recognises that the minute something’s forbidden you only want it more, so no foods, even high-fat snacks and alcohol are banned, simply limited, making it easier to achieve your weight loss dream. Kim believes support is also important: “Losing weight is challenging and there maybe times when weight loss slows down or a ‘bad week’ leads to a temporary gain. It can be tempting to give up and that’s where the fantastic support offered in group makes the difference. Together we can achieve anything”.
