Feeling lonely? You’re not alone.

No one should have no-one, and yet 1.4 million* older people feel cut off from society. Most people will feel lonely at some point in their lives, not only can this define their lives, but it can also have a significant impact on their wellbeing. There are 2,585* lonely older people here on the Isle of Wight, an alarming statistic, but it’s important to know that you are not alone. Age UK Isle of Wight have been supporting older people on the Island since 1973, and offer services to help people stay happy, healthy and connected, they strive to combat loneliness and social isolation in older people on the Isle of Wight.

Active Networks Social Clubs – with FREE local door-to-door transport Age UK Isle of Wight run fortnightly social clubs for the over 65s in Cowes, Freshwater, Ryde and Ventnor, all of which offer FREE local door-to-door transport, thanks to funding they have received from Southern Water. There are regular outings and visits from informative speakers. Refreshments are included, and groups are welcoming and friendly. Age UK Isle of Wight’s Active Networks Social Clubs run fortnightly from 14:00 – 15:45. Membership is £9 per month, which includes attendance at both fortnightly sessions each month. Refreshments are included, and the local door-to-door transport service is provided FREE of charge. Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the February issue of Island Magazines. We are slowly working our way into the new year and Spring is finally getting closer. I have already seen a cluster of crocus bulbs pushing through the surface looking for the sun. Let’s hope they don’t have too long to wait. Have you noticed that as soon as the shelves were cleared of Christmas goodies they were soon replaced with Easter Eggs. Is this good or bad? I’m not sure where I stand on this as on the one hand I think everything is getting too commercialised and happening much earlier then is necessary but on the other hand who doesn’t like chocolate and to be honest I am a creme egg lover and I don’t believe they should be just for Easter... they taste so much better in February!!!! This months issue as usual is packed with news and information from local councillors. We have a great selection of advertiser offering a variety of services and don’t forget Shrove Tuesday is on the 13th February and I look forward to joining many others across the Island in perfecting the perfect pancake flip.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 The shift from 2017 to 2018 seems to have been very rapid as I write this January is well underway and I wish you all a happy and prosperous year ahead. The weather has been extraordinary over the past couple of months and I’m sure has contributed to so many suffering with the awful virus that has been going around. The very wet conditions latterly have been challenging, but I’m happy to say that to date the flood management in the village has stood up to the test. I know that there have been many concerns in Alvington Manor View where the ground works have commenced for the new development. Your Parish Councillors, Terry Martin and myself, will be keeping a close eye on this and have both contacted the planning enforcement team with the aim of ensuring minimum disturbance and that planning regulations are adhered to. We have pointed out the effects of removing hedgerows and disturbing ditches and the impact that this is having on the gardens and road immediately adjacent to the site. We have also pointed out the need for appropriate parking provision on site for the contractors workforce so that no extra congestion is caused on Alvington Manor View. I am certain that we will be able to work with the developer to ensure that this project runs smoothly. 4

I know many of you were alarmed to note that the crossing patrol officer had been removed from Carisbrooke Road at the junction to Wellington Road. At the time writing I have been assured that anew officer has been appointed pending necessary checks and training. Hopefully by the time you read this the new officer will be in place. For those of you who know Maxine Yule, our long time Newport Parish Council Clerk, you will be sad to know that she has decided to retire and has handed the reins to her deputy, Danny Faulkner, who has had several years experience working for IWC and in subsequently the NPC. Danny is a very approachable and helpful person and I’m sure will endeavour to assist your enquiries in any way he can. It’s nice to note that many have shown their appreciation for Maxine, including our own Nellies Group at Gunville, where a lunch has been hosted by the group members. I’m sure that you would join me in wishing Maxine a happy retirement. I am constantly in touch with Island Roads regarding the amount of litter and fly tipping on so many of the roads in our lovely ward. Please feel free to notify them yourself if you witness such a problem. They are proactive in clearing up if they know about it. More to the point I feel we need to develop a culture where people realise that dumping

News Report from John Hobart continued their rubbish in public spaces is not acceptable and I feel that it is all of our responsibilities to educate people on this matter. This should start with children and I do feel that the schools should be playing an active part in this. Often I see litter on the schools grounds and do believe that if those responsible don’t make a point of getting the young to clear up after themselves, whilst in school, they will never appreciate the importance when out of school.

Caught on Camera!

DENYER PLUMBING SERVICES

This month I have been very fortunate to come across the photography work of Darren Harris who has kindly allowed us to use his exquisite kingfisher photo on the front cover.

Qualified Plumber Professional, Reliable & Friendly Service Free Island Quote No Job Too Small OAP, Armed Forces & Ssafa Discount

Like many, Darren is a wildlife enthusiast and his passion is birds of prey and kingfishers. After watching kestrels and photographing them on his phone he decided it was time to invest in a suitable camera to enable him to take his photography to the next level. In doing this, Darren has become accustomed to observing and learning the habits of the vast range of wildlife we have on the Island.

denyerplumbingservices@hotmail.com

The front cover picture was taken as Hersey Nature Reserve in Seaview and Darren is a regular visitor at the reserve and can sit for hours and will often see a flash of blue or orange dart by. By hiding, waiting, observing and keeping still for long enough, whilst ensuring his finger was poised on the shutter button paid off and Darren was able to catch the kingfisher in all its glory whilst it took a well earned rest before flying off again. The details of this truly magnificent bird are clearly shown in the picture and I wonder if he knew he was being watched and decided to play along so Darren could get the perfect shot!! Whatever the reason I think everyone will agree that this picture is just perfect and thank you to Darren for allowing us to share it.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Shaping Newport, the project that will produce a vision plan for Newport has started to come up with some consistent themes from consulting with Newport residents, visitors and businesses. So far they include pedestrianisation, more coherent and distinctive public spaces, better connections between town squares and nearby hubs of public space (such as Hunnycross, the Harbour, Church Litten and Pan Mill), better use of Newport’s heritage as an attraction, the availability and management of town parking, safety and amenity around the bus station/library/ park, better differentiation between town centre and out-of-town, improved orientation for visitors within the town, a concentrated effort to make St. Thomas and St. James Squares vibrant central attractions and the town centre focus on people above cars. We have a real opportunity to transform our town and I’ve put a budget bid into Newport Parish Council to ensure that some of the easy fixes are able to be completed. Other ideas may require more funding and take longer to deliver, however because Shaping Newport is a partnership between Newport Parish Council, Newport Business Association and IW Council a lot of people will make sure that these positive changes happen.

There is still time to complete the survey if you wish www. surveymonkey.co.uk/r/ shapingnewport or look out for the paper surveys in shops and cafes in town. Residents are still concerned about the speed and volume of traffic in the residential streets, getting cars to slow down and be more aware of pedestrians is my top priority. With the results of Shaping Newport I will have valuable “buy in” from the IW Council to make this happen. This month the IW Council will be consulting us all on the junction improvements at St Mary’s roundabout, which is the first phase of major works that we received £9.1m of Government money for. The other 2 phases are the mini roundabout by Lidl which will become a signalised crossing that will really improve the area for pedestrian which at the moment is a nightmare. The other part is at the junction of St Georges Way and Medina Avenue (Matalan roundabout), which will help reduce queuing times. I am very concerned that the St Mary’s alterations will increase the volume and speed of traffic on Hunnyhill, making it difficult to cross, increase the noise and reduce the air quality for residents. I have requested a pedestrian crossing be incorporated on Hunnyhill and

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans continued.

G A Property Services EXPERIENCED•RESPONSIBLE•RELIABLE

that the crossing at Lidl be seen as a priority scheme. Please look out for the consultation and respond, especially if you like on Hunnyhill, Hookes Way and the surrounding areas.

Do you need help to keep your property maintained?

I have put forward an idea for improving the environment in that area too with a bid for some funding from the Parish Council for a bench and planting on Hunnyhill. It’s important that seating is provided to enable people to rest, especially on a steep hill and plants and flowers will help to break up the prevalence of concrete here.
