Domestic Cleaner Taking on New Clients

Dear Readers

January is always a quiet month but there are still a couple of events happening on the Island and you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on page 9. This months issue is still packed with news and information including regular reports from Councillors and Parish Councils. The puzzle page is very popular and is a good way to get the brain working again after a hectic Christmas and New Years Eve. Have you set yourself some New Years resolutions? If you have are you likely to stick at them until at least February? Feel free to let me know if you make any, which ones you make and how long you stick to them!!! Until next month...... Christmas is now done and dusted for another year and it’s time to get back to normal. I do love it when the Christmas decorations are put up but I think I like it more when they come down. The house always looks so much bigger and like many others I take my down on New Years Day.

Feathered Friends The little Robin on the front cover was beautifully captured by Wight Wildlife Photographer Stuart Shore. This picture was taken at Alverstone and I would like to thank Stuart for allowing us to use it to see in the first edition of 2016. Stuart’s reputation is really growing for the wonderful wildlife photos he takes and many people will have seen his wares at Island Craft Fairs recently. You can order prints online direct from his website at www.wightwildlife. co.uk and you will also find out details of the other stockists on the Island to purchase prints from. Stuart also offers tuition and workshops such as ‘Introduction to Wildlife Photography’ and these can be done in groups of 4 or on a 1 to 1 basis. He is also running workshops titled ‘Getting more out of your Camera’ and this is ideal for beginners to learn their way around their camera to ensure they get the best use from it. All workshops are bookable through the website. You can follow Wight Wildlife Photography on Facebook. Please also don’t forget that this is the time of the year when our little feathered friends rely on us the most to keep them fed and watered. Winter is the hardest time of year for all our wildlife to survive due to scarcity of food. Birds require high energy (high fat) foods during the cold weather to maintain their fat reserves to survive the frosts nights. Fat balls [seeds mixed with fat] will be popular additions to your feeding stations and are readily available to buy or you can easily make your own or put out some finely chopped unsalted bacon rind or grated hard cheese to provide energy-rich fat for your birds Some fat balls come in a nylon mesh bag but always remove these because birds get their claws caught in the mesh, causing injury and potentially trapping them.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Now that we have moved into 2016 it seems We face the old chestnut of time to contemplate the challenges that travelling to meetings…Hampshire could be ahead of us in the coming year. is not huge, but with the additional ferry travel, trains and taxis when heading One of the key changes we can anticipate is for places like Basingstoke or Aldershot, a devolution. Devolution brings more power to whole day can be consumed for the sake of local communities, meaning that not every a two-hour meeting. This will become less decision is made by Westminster and that attractive over time and I fear that Island local communities are much more closely representatives may start dropping out. Thus involved in decision making and delivery our voice would not be heard to its full effect. of services. Don’t think for a moment that (see www.solentlep.org.uk/uploads/ this will suddenly give independence to the documents/Hampshire_and_Isle_of_Wight_ Isle of Wight, in fact we will become part Devolution_Prospectus_September_2015.pdf of a community that includes Hampshire for more information) (New Forest to Basingstoke, Aldershot and Portsmouth in the East ) So what does this Visit Isle of Wight is in jeopardy because of mean for us? The total answer is still evolving, the withdrawal of funding from the council but in essence devolution with Hampshire in the forthcoming year. A proposed solution should improve our health service by sharing for this is the ‘D-BID’. This seeks investment of resources. We will access the knowledge through business rates from businesses that of a wider group of councillors and officers benefit from tourism, a small percentage enabling better solutions and greater invested to promote IOW tourism (1.5% economies of scale – so often the problem on - 1.75%) I believe this is vital as tourism the Island. It started off as a hobby in 1997 for Andy Fortune and due to his passion and demand for his skilled work as a turner in 2012 it turned into a full time business and The Mulberry Tree Wood Turnery was born and Andy has now become a Member of the Register of Professional Turners. The business started off small in a tiny workshop in Northwood but in 2014 Andy had the opportunity to move to bigger premises at Arreton Barns Craft Village. With these bigger premises came a separate workshop and shop and Andy was able to provide a lot more for local woodworkers and turners and is now the main agent on the Island for Record- Power Tools and Equipment and Chestnut finishing products. The new retail shop attached to his workshop meant that Andy was able to increase the range of items available for resale which include unique bowls, platters and hollow forms. He also sells his products through other shops and galleries on the Island and takes commission work when required for those extra special pieces. The larger workshop has enabled Andy to offer beginners and intermediate bowl turning courses on a one-to-one basis. They have proved very popular with locals and visitors alike. If you are looking for a present for the person who has everything, I bet they haven’t yet had the pleasure of attending one of Andy’s courses which are available as either a half or full day. Both courses have received positive comments from students on Andy’s teaching ability and patience. For more details of these courses visit his website at www.mtwoodturnery.com

Resolutions!!!! by Debbie Mason They say that December is an expensive month and this may be true for many but not me. Oh, don’t get me wrong I’m not some sort of money saving guru, in fact I’m just the opposite. January is my downfall month and all because of ‘New Year Resolutions’.

surely be all the encouragement I need…. All of those clothes have never been worn and most have been given to charity shops but a few have been held back to remind me of what I could of achieved but I so miserably failed at.

Yep its that time when I think I can better myself, change myself and find a happier self within and whilst writing this I know it’s wrong but every year reasoning goes out the window and I become obsessed with the year ahead. Every new year is the year I believe that I am going to start loving fitness and obviously each year is a different type of fitness which inevitably means that each year I have to buy new fitness gear, new fitness shoes, and of course the latest fitness machine and not forgetting the latest bag, sweat band, drink container and all other fashionable fitness paraphernalia that goes with it.

I’ve also thought I was very musical and could easily play a musical instrument, I mean how hard could it be… I’ve covered most of the string section and at least half of the percussion and my neighbours have written to me begging me not to start on the brass section. I aimed to be a one man orchestra, playing gigs at Osborne House but even I have had to admit defeat when I couldn’t even chime the triangle on time.

Once truly kitted out in my new gear I find my fitness obsessions is lucky to last longer that the first week of January, in fact the leftover turkey lasts longer then my new gym membership.

Unfortunately even with no resolutions set for 2016 I just know that it will still be an expensive month as I will definitely be at the January sales and yes I do need another one of those and I know it’s a size too small but at that price it’s a bargain and if I don’t get it I might regret it for the rest of my life and one thing I know about life is, you should never have regrets.

I don’t just stop there, because I also start the diet!!! “This diet is definitely going to work” is a favourite saying of mine and one which becomes a mantra and I am so positive that this is the ONE that I envisage a slimmer and healthier me and reckon I will drop the minimum of one dress size by the end of the first month. As an incentive I think its best to go out and buy these one dress size smaller clothes before I have reached this new weight as seeing them hanging in the wardrobe will

All these resolutions cost me plenty of money and I haven’t stuck to any of them. Maybe I’m weak or maybe deep down I am just happy with the way I am.

Newport

Parish Council

Parish Budget 2016/17

A draft budget will be discussed at the January meeting ahead of setting the precept at the February meeting. The precept for 2015/16 was decreased by 40% as the transfer of services from the IW Council had not been completed and funds were still available from the previous year. This decrease was agreed with the cautionary note that the precept for 2016/17 would need to rise to maintain devolved services such as grass cutting and management of Clatterford Recreation Ground and Victoria Recreation Ground. Other discussions for inclusion in this year’s budget include the provision of toilets in Newport and management of the playing field off Worsley Road. Please contact your parish councillors if you would like to discuss this further.

Grant Funding for Emergency Wardens The Parish Council has recently been successful with a number of grant applications including ÂŁ8,645 to provide training and equipment for Emergency Wardens across the parish. This will project will begin in the next few months with community meetings to recruit volunteers, the funds will train 36 wardens headed by 6 lead wardens to assist vulnerable and elderly residents during emergency weather situations, particularly in known flood areas. Please look out for the meetings in your area.

Meetings The Parish Council next full council meeting is on 11th January, at the Riverside Centre, Newport. Planning and Licensing Committee meet fortnightly, 6.30pm at the Riverside Centre, the meetings in January are on 7th and 21st. A full list of all meetings are available on our website.
