June has been a varied month weather wise and the tourists have been arriving to take pleasure in our beautiful Island and to experience just a little of what we enjoy on a daily basis. The IOW Festival has been and gone and the Island is now heading towards carnival season. Many of the towns have their own carnival and you can find a list of them all on page 14. You will also find the ever popular ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 12 and 13. In this issue we have articles from Mr Wally AWOL and Friends and a news update from the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital as well as news reports, business editorials and much more. We have some great advertisers offering many different services, please keep using them and help to support local businesses and please remember to tell them you saw them advertised here. Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 As you may be aware, we have recently had National Volunteers Week. This week is specifically designed to recognise the achievements and support of volunteers’ right across our communities. I was delighted to learn that the volunteer team at Carisbrooke Castle Museum have been acknowledged for their endeavours and will shortly receive the Queens Award for Voluntary Service, a very high accolade in the volunteer community! The volunteers at the castle museum put in many hours performing tasks from front of house/museum guide through to help with the care and cataloguing of artifacts (such as the newly acquired Brannon Prints). As with most organisations, the Castle Museum are always on the look-out for more volunteers, so if you are interested, and can spare even a small amount of time please contact Chris Yendall at assistant@ carisbrookecastlemuseum.org.uk , she would be delighted to hear from you! On the topic of volunteers, I was invited to Shanklin Community Library to present their volunteer awards. I do feel that this is a tribute to volunteering at its best. Thirtythree volunteers from the community, under the guidance of the Head Librarian, have resurrected the faltering library service in this area and it is now a wonderful community asset with facilities for children, the elderly and those just needing a bit of company. I only write about this as I feel it is such an inspirational display of what a community can achieve if it pulls together! You may have already discovered that English Heritage have installed their parking meter in the Castle car park. In the current plan it will be in operation between 9am – 6pm. If you are visiting the castle, buying an entrance 4

ticket, or if you are a volunteer working there, your payment will be refunded as you go into the castle (or so I am told). But do remember, particularly those of you who walk there regularly, that you will be expected to pay to leave your car there between the stated times. Don’t get caught out!! I will be most interested to be engaged in a study being conducted by Southern Water and the Environment Agency in the near future. The particular aspect of the study that is of interest to me is that which looks at the impacts of abstraction of water on the environment. As you may know water is taken at Carisbrooke and the Bowcombe Water Supply Works to help meet the demand for water on the Island. Part of the study will be taking place around Plaish Meadows and the Lukely Brook. I always feel that the more we understand our local environment and the effects that we have on it the better position we will be in to protect its future and our own. Contractors will be measuring water levels, water quality and completing environmental surveys. Access to carry out these studies will be secured with landowners before commencement!

Mr Wally AWOL and Friends Mr Wally AWOL and Friends is an Isle of Wight (Cowes based) self funded voluntary organisation which rescues and rehabilitates Wild Birds. It is run by Kay Ounsworth, with help from Donna Henderson, Tracy Lane and Leah Ounsworth. Their aim is to help sick and injured birds back to peak health and get them returned back into the wild once this has been accomplished. They work closely with a fantastic team of veterinary surgeons. If you spot a sick or injured bird, the best course of action is to: 1) Secure the bird in a box with air holes. 2) Give the bird something comfy to nestle on such as tissue, kitchen roll, an old towel or something similar. 3) Place the box with the bird inside in a dark, warm, quiet place while you seek assistance. They welcome calls for advice or to arrange collection. Please call 07765564479 or 01983 247528 or message their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/wallyawol

...stationery y leaflets y flyers y posters y display print y multi-part forms y banners y and much more... For more information or a quote, please contact us on 01983 534440 or printdept@gmail.com

They work almost entirely by bus, so reaching more remote parts of the Island at night time is not always possible. However they are happy to arrange a more convenient meeting place, grab a taxi or advise as necessary. If you would like to help keep Wally AWOL running smoothly, Pets with Hart in Newport (opposite Hurst) happily accept donations for them and they also have an Amazon Wish List: Wally AWOL Wish List Link: www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/ C0X58RG47PSS 5

A lot has been happening at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital since our last update. We had a record number of applications in 2016 for funds for equipment and resources from various parts of the Hospital We were able to make a large number of grants which will enhance the already excellent care and service we Islanders get from St Mary’s. The items have been ordered and are coming into use daily. Examples of what we were able to provide are monitoring equipment for community midwives, traction splints, transfer hoists for stroke patients, warming equipment for hypothermia cases dealt with by ambulances, dementia friendly crockery, and learning resources for children with special needs. We also looked after our staff with some exercise equipment and refurbishing a rest room. We have taken the opportunity to give a fresh look to our branding and have launched a new website. Check it out at www.fosmiow.co.uk. We are now communicating regularly on Facebook and gradually building up a healthy following there. It is important to let people know what we are doing for the Hospital and how they can help us to do it. Our amazing volunteers are running our friendly cafe and well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. And we now have an outlet in the Health and Wellbeing Centre in Ryde. With the Laidlaw cafe and the daily ward trolley, that gives us five outlets to look after so if you have some time to spare to volunteer, please do contact us through the website or ring our office on 534405.

At a cost of £3,000, the Friends have provided 20 traction splints for the ambulances, to be used to relieve excruciating pain from certain leg fractures. Paramedic Mike Wigley (pictured) explained that essential pre-hospital treatment for someone suffering a mid-shaft femur fracture is to relieve the pain through a combination of pain relief and splintage.

Although legacies and donations are very important to us, our cafes and shop are our main source of income, and we do see these facilities as being a very important part of our service to the hospital. The coffee and tea is good and reasonably priced and there is a range of sandwiches and snacks. We have “Splintage is particularly important, as joined the Hospital initiative to promote less separating the fracture bone fragments sugary food and drinks and our customers are provides significant pain relief and reassurgetting used to that. Our lovely staff have a ance for the patient,” he said. “If a bone is caring attitude and always reach out to those shattered in half the leg muscles immediately in the cafe who are struggling. This is not pull the bones together, and it really hurts.” always physically, as inevitably we meet many people who have had bad news or who are worried about a loved one. We work closely with the Hospital to make sure that our funds really do make a difference to patients, staff and the Island community and we enjoy great support from the Trust, to help us to help them. So if you can help us in any way, do get in touch via the website or by ringing the number above. We would love to hear from you. 7

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Good news this week from Newport Parish Council with confirmation of the “seed” money for Newport Time Bank to move forward to the next stage. I’ve had a lot of interest from people in Newport in the Time Bank project and the donation of £750 will pay for the insurance and membership of Time Bank UK. I must thank Sally from West Wight Time Bank for all her support and expertise and allowing Newport Time Bank to use their existing policies and documents. The steering committee will be meeting again soon and I hope to have a update next month for you.

toilets and Newport Parish Council have been spending money on getting it unblocked. What needs to be done is for the drain to be made fit for purpose and for the IW Council to authorise and pay for these works. Meanwhile, unfortunately the toilets will remain closed. The toilets in Post Office Lane are open and are being cleaned more frequently, they are much more pleasant to use than in the past!

The IW Association of Local Councils have asked me to meet up and discuss 20’s Plenty as so many town and parish councils wish to create safer spaces in their communities. You may remember that in October the IW Council voted through my motion that 20mph be introduced in residential roads, tow and village centres in a phased implementation across the island. We are still awaiting the IW Council Cabinet to put it on the Forward Plan for a decision, as the Cabinet have the final say, which I hope will be a rubber stamp to endorse the will of Full Council. I have had confirmation that a paper is written at the moment for the Cabinet.

I am still holding my surgery on Saturday morning at Quay Arts 9.30-10.30, you can always ring 521068 to make an appointment, or just pop down (although occasionally I may have to cancel at the last minute due to work/ family commitments).

The street audit will be happening shortly, which will look at how pedestrians and particularly how those with mobility/sight I am meeting with officers to have an update issues move around the town. This is a really on the issues in and around Caesars Road, as important piece of work and it will help future those of you who live around here, parking, developments in the town, pinpointing areas speeding cars, air/noise pollution and road safety are major issues. The Residents Parking that need improving. We can share this with Permit is being written at the moment and this Island Roads and the IW Council as it will is going to be so welcome to so many of us in provide valuable information on how we move about our town and where resources can be Newport, again I will update you as soon as I put. have more information.

People are still asking questions about why the public toilets in South Street (by the library) are still closed. The IW Council is responsible for the drain that services the 8
