Dear Readers

‘Continuation of care with a small, friendly practice’

Welcome to the June issue of Island Magazines. Now that the local elections are over we need to focus our attention on the general election which takes place on the 8th June. Don’t forget to vote and have your say. Inside you will find local news reports from Julie Jones-Evans and John Hobart who following their re-elections have agreed to continue with their monthly contributions of bringing the latest news and information of what’s happening in the area. Summer should be kicking in now and we have been very lucky so far as there have been some really nice days. The Island has many beautiful places to visit and Newport along with the surrounding areas offer some great parks, quay side walks, cafes and other eateries in which to enjoy the slow steady pace of Island life. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers and let them know you found their information here. Until next month....

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans

I’m so excited about the start of a new term of representing the residents of Newport Central, thank you for continuing to have faith in me and I will carry on working for you all. I welcome our new Parish Council members and working together on new projects for Newport. I feel I must bring the issue of the current crisis at IW Food Bank to your attention. I trained as a Food Bank volunteer in 2012, thinking it would be a short term need for this kind of support. However, 5 years later the demand for Food Bank is growing and growing and the Newport Food Bank at Church on the Roundabout is the busiest on the Island. Usually 4 tonnes of food is given out each month and usually 4 tonnes is donated. In April, only 1 tonne came in leaving the supplies at the warehouse at severely low levels. Please consider putting a few extra items in your shopping trolley as every little really does help financial donations are also welcome to help pay for the running of the vehicles and overheads at the warehouse. Find out more here www.isleofwight. foodbank.org.uk A few people have been concerned about the toilets at South Street being closed. I know this is causing issues for many 4

residents and it is not something that we did lightly. The issue is with the main drain, it is constantly blocking and the Parish Council is spending a lot of money on clearing it and it is actually the responsibility of the IW Council. I will continue to work with the council to get this situation resolved. Meanwhile, Post Office Lane toilets are being cleaned 3 times a day so are much cleaner than when the IW Council ran them and we are having plans drawn up to remodel them, making them more modern and accessible. Just to remind everyone I have a surgery on a Saturday morning, at Quay Arts Cafe, 9.30-10.30 , please do come along and discuss any issue.

Prep Work by Lucie Ferguson My body and mind is in a serious state of shock.... I have woken up and realised that the half-year mark is right in front of my eyes. June... yes that’s right I said June is here.... I don’t know where the other 5 months have gone and I don’t have time to look for them right now, as it seems only a few weeks ago that I was making my New Year’s Resolutions.

By this time of the year I should have already dropped two dress sizes, I should be eating more healthily and getting myself beach body ready... and I don’t mean being mistaken for a beached whale lying harpooned on the sandy shores!!!! My feet have been encased for far too long in ankle boots and are so white that they look like I’ve been dipped in a tin of Dulux paint. There is no way they are ready for bejewelled summer sandals just yet. Another important job I need to get working on is my tan as no way can these white bits be put so glaringly on display. I’m a fake tanner as it’s quick, easy and it’s much healthier than sun beds or sunbathing. I hope as you read this, there will be many of you who are nodding your head in agreement and feeling my pain. It’s not that I want to inflict this on others but more that I need to know I am not alone out there in this cruel world, that I won’t be the only one on our sandy beaches that didn’t stick to the New Year’s resolutions I so proudly declared a mere few months ago. I have thought about setting myself some mid-year resolutions and perhaps between now and the end of summer I may have toned my rather round shape slightly. But then I think of all the ice creams that need to be enjoyed, the ‘all you can eat’ barbecues I will be attending and all the summer cocktails I plan on sipping and the answer I keep coming up with is.... maybe next year!!!! 5

Summer Solstice If like me you are just getting into the swing of summer but haven’t yet had the chance to fully enjoy the longer, lighter evenings, then I suggest you get your skates on because on Wednesday June 21st its Summer Solstice. Even though this midsummer date is when we get the most daylight of the year, it also marks the time where the days start shortening ahead of winter. The midsummer date is set based on the sun’s tilt towards the sun, which hits its maximum at 23° 26′ and falls between June 20th and June 22nd in the northern hemisphere. The ‘longest’ day of the year marks the middle of summer because the tilt of the Earth’s axis is most aligned with the sun, providing us with the most daylight of the year.

What is MND?....

Call: 01983 754666

June is The Motor Neurone Disease • Portable Appliance Testing (PAT Testing) Association’s Awareness month and still • Electrical Wiring Testing & Alterations there is a lot to learn about this debilitating • Telephone Sockets, Data Cabling & Faulting disease. Many people aren’t aware of the • and More disease and mention the words MND and a common response is “What’s that?” Full Island Coverage www.westwightaudio.co.uk info@westwightaudio.co.uk Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord. As the motor neurones gradually die, the muscles stop working. This means messages gradually stop reaching muscles, which leads to weakness and wasting. It can affect how a person diagnosed with MND walks, talks, eats, drinks and breathes. It is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease that can affect any adult at any time. Although there is currently no cure, symptoms can be managed to help achieve the best possible quality of life. The Isle of Wight has an established branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association and their sole aim is to serve and support all those on the Island who are affected by it. This includes people with MND, their carers, family and friends, in fact anyone who has been touched in some way by the disease. Jennie Lewis, Chair of the IOW branch, commented ‘We regularly have between 1220 people living with MND on the Isle of Wight. Each person has a different set of requirements. The disease can take hold very quickly so we need to react immediately to the changing needs of our local people. Our brilliant team in the Island branch are able to work closely with other professionals on the Island (including very close links with the Earl Mountbatten Hospice) to provide the best possible care and support to help people with MND and their families. The Isle of Wight branch is run entirely by volunteers, many of who have personal experience of the disease and they hold monthly support meetings for people living with MND and their carers. These meetings provide an opportunity to meet with other people living with the disease, and to share experiences and ideas. The branch wants everyone to know about MND and what it means for people and their families so that others will join in the fight for the best standards of care and for more research. If you would like further information about their meetings, or wish to get involved, please email the Chair of the IOW Branch, Jennie Lewis at eandjlewis@aol.com or visit the branch website www.mndiow.org.uk 11

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I am delighted to continue as your County Councillor and Newport Parish Councillor after the recent elections. I am feeling quite trim after so many days of walking around the area I was very happy, as a Trustee of Carisbrooke Castle Museum, to attend the presentation evening on the 28th April, of the County Press Brannon Print Archives. This collection of original Brannon Prints has been kept at the Isle of Wight College, where they have been available for research and occasionally on display. These have now been given to Carisbrooke Castle Museum for safe keeping. You may or may not know about ‘Time Banking’, for those of you who don’t it is, in brief, a way for people and organisations to help each other in the community and be rewarded for it. For every hour of time you give helping someone you receive one time credit. This hour is logged on a computer and is available for you to spend on yourself, donate to others or save. No money changes hands it is a skills based exchange….for example you might walk someone’s dog for an hour and claim your credit from someone who can help you with your computer….it could be anything! This has the potential to bring areas of the community closer together and is currently working well in the West Wight. We are establishing this system now for the Newport area. We have chosen our Chairman, treasurer and secretary and are currently based in the Downside Centre. If you are interested in getting involved please contact Vicky Mew at vyxiow@gmail.com. No skill is too large or too small and this 12

scheme offers a great opportunity to make new friends, give back to the community and receive help if you need it. Newport Parish Council is supporting this and will be able to give you more information. Now that IOW Council business is back to normal I have already scheduled meetings with regard to the parking issues in and around Carisbrooke. I heard from so many people, whilst walking the ward, about the problems they are having when they need to park near their homes. The roads offer limited space to park and this is not helped when vehicles are abandoned, there have been 3 within yards of Cedar Hill. Thankfully one has been removed, one is being processed and the other is also being investigated. Unfortunately the way the law works there is no instant fix, unless the vehicle is considered unsafe. I can’t tell you that there will be a quick solution to the parking problems, however I can tell you that I am working on it and I am in regular discussion with the IOW Council Highways and parking teams. Please, if you want to comment on this problem, do email me and Island Roads, I’m pleased to hear your views and positive ideas and the more communication flying around about this the more weight our case will have. I will again have a stand at the Carisbrooke Village Fete at the 8 Bells on Saturday 24th June. Please come and chat with myself and Terry Martin as your Parish Councillors we are happy to hear what you have to say.

“We never tell members what they should weigh, and so members chose their own target weight when they join. However much you’d love to lose, we know how motivating it is when you’re aiming for a weight you dream to be rather than a weight you’re told you should be or think is easily achievable! “I know what it’s like to struggle with your weight and, having lost 4 and a half stone as a Slimming World member myself, it’s my dream to see my members achieve their dreams. In my groups, members set targets, share recipes, challenges and solutions and celebrate success together, which is so important to a successful journey. It’s all about support, care, encouragement and fun – and I firmly believe that’s why we regularly see members achieve their weight loss dreams. In group they learn that they don’t have to give up any of their favourite foods, and in fact they can fill up on healthy, hearty, delicious meals just by making small changes!” If you would like more information on Kim’s Slimming World Groups please call her on 07855747893 or see kims main advert. 13
