Victoria Recreation Ground The CCTV is now in operation around the Recreation Ground and Pavilion. This proved invaluable when recently a litter bin was set on fire at the edge of the car park, this was an act of wanton destruction by two youths which has deprived the community of a facility. The bin had only recently been installed at the request of users of the Rec and has now had to be removed for safety reasons. The incident is in the hands of the Police but if anyone has any information please contact 101 or the Parish Clerk.

Homemade Ginger Biscuits I came across this recipe recently on social media. It was shared by a friend of a friend of a friend!!!! I do love a ginger biscuit and normally settle for a shop brought packet as I have never tried making them before. These are very easy to make and taste lovely the only problem with them is I have made them three times now and each time they have come out differently. The first batch had a nice sharp crispness to them with a beautiful snap that even Mary Berry would be proud of. The second batch were softer and more like a cookie but just as nice and the third batch was really gooey and chewy and I felt like it gave my mouth a good workout which again is no bad thing. I hope you enjoy making them and let me know how yours turn out as it will be interesting to see… Ingredients 113g soft brown/golden sugar 100g butter or margarine 2 tablespoons of golden syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger (I used about 3 as I do like a ginger taste) 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda 227g self raising flour Heat oven to 190°C. In a saucepan gently stir and warm the butter, syrup and sugar until butter is melted and well mixed. Remove from the heat. Sieve together flour, bicarb and ginger and stir into the melted butter, syrup and sugar mix. Form into a soft dough. Place small balls (about 1 teaspoon of mix) onto a greased baking tray. About 12 per tray and flatten slightly. They flatten and spread during baking.
If it doesn’t smell, it’s not one of mine... The Islands largest selection of scented roses. Over 80 varieties and increasing... grown on our farm so come and see.
Bake for 15 minutes or until the colour is right for ginger biscuits and the top looks slightly rough. Remove from oven and cool slightly in the tray then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Situated at IOW Lavender at Staplehurst Grange, Staplers Road, Newport .
Enjoy with a nice cup of tea….

Sainsbury’s Newport Isle of Wight has raised £14,937.00 for Sport Relief. The store helped to raise money for the nationwide charity event by fundraising at both Red Funnel Terminals over the Sport Relief weekend, 18th – 20th March. They also had a static bike and rowing bike in the store’s foyer for colleagues to peddle enough miles to reach the retailer’s Store Support Centre in Holborn, London, and back.
Professional External Cleaning • All kinds of driveways & paving cleaned • Weed and moss control • Application of Quality Paving Sealers • Patio cleaning • Deck cleaning • High level cleaning Call Darrin on 216121 or email: dpcciow@gmail.com
The store’s Local Charity of the Year, Ability Dogs 4 Young People, who have received Part of Island Garden Timber Care & Surface Cleaning funding from Sport Relief in the past, supported the fundraising efforts over the weekend by demonstrating the amazing training skills the dogs receive.
On March 13th, colleagues from the store joined the region’s Operations Manager Darren Noonan on a bike ride around all Sainsbury’s stores on the island and clocked up a 56 round mile trip. Jonnie Peacock, Paralympic champion and Active Kids Ambassador, has showed support for the store. He said: “Sport Relief gets bigger and better every time, and it has been brilliant to see such enthusiasm for this year’s event from Sainsbury’s colleagues nationwide. “I’d like to thank all the Sainsbury’s colleagues and customers in the Isle of Wight for taking part in fundraising and helping make it another fantastic year for Sport Relief. Everyone knows how much good work Comic Relief charity does in the UK and abroad, so these funds will really make a difference.” Sport Relief brings the entire nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives. The money raised by the public is spent by Comic Relief to support some of the poorest and most disadvantaged people in the UK and around the world. 50% of money raised is spent in the UK, supporting projects locally. Paul Dyer Store Manager at Sainsbury’s Newport Isle of Wight added: “I’m really proud of my colleagues and the amount of money we raised for Sport Relief this year. I’d like to thank our customers for their support. My colleagues love getting behind the fundraising activities and we know we’re going to make a difference to such a fantastic cause.” Sainsbury’s is a proud partner of both Comic Relief and Sport Relief and has helped to raise over £100million since 1999. 10
Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 I’m pleased to say that the long awaited Gunville notice board is in place on the edge of the Spar car park. Constructed in the prison workshops and sponsored by the Newport Parish Council, it is a very smart and solid piece of architecture, it took 5 of us to carry it into position! It was erected by volunteers, our thanks to them. It is almost adjacent to the newly opened crossing and so will hopefully provide a good source of local community information. Interestingly the legs are not wood, but a synthetic wood like material, these are designed for longevity and will not rot.
I attended the Allotments Meeting and am pleased to say that it was well supported, by predominantly happy allotment holders. It seems that since being managed by Newport Parish Council and the efforts of our grounds-man Alan things are going well. Sadly the waiting list it doesn’t seem to be getting much shorter, but well worth holding on if you are keen as occasionally some retire.
