Dear Readers Welcome to the November issue of Island Magazines. I can hardly believe where the year has gone and I think it is now acceptable for me to be able to mention Christmas, because lets be honest it’s not far away now!!! The end of October sees Halloween and then the beginning of November its Guy Fawkes and then its a straight run to Christmas. There has been a change in the weather and there is now a chill in the air, personally I don’t mind this, its the rain I don’t like so lets keep our fingers crossed for a relatively dry November. This month I have been on a learning expedition and paid a visit to the Isle of Wight Bat Hospital and you can read all about it on page 6. There is still plenty to do on the Island and you’ll find details of Christmas Fayres, Guy Fawkes Parties and charity events listed in the Dates for your Diary on page 7. Please keep supporting the advertisers and using their services and please always let me know if you have any news you want to share. Until next month... West Wight Audio by Kelvin Currie Hi, I’m Kelvin from West Wight Audio. I have over 30 years of experience in the electrical, electronics and telecommunications industry, and I can put all of that knowledge to work for you. If you have a problem with your phone, broadband or WIFI, need a telephone socket moved or another put in. I can do that for you. If you have a telephone fault and get a message from your provider that they will charge you over £100 if they come out and that it’s your equipment causing the problem, then call me. I will charge much less to find out if it is or not, fix it if it is your problem, and I’ll negotiate with your provider for you to get it sorted if it’s down to them. I can also sort out your connections between your TV, HiFi and DVD player if that’s what you need. Maybe you have an electrical problem too. I will be happy to look at it and give you an honest answer. If you need appliances tested for safety reasons (PAT), that’s one of the things I do too. If you aren’t sure, please call and ask. Advice over the phone is free, and I’m always happy to chat about anything. I’ve even fixed a vintage jukebox and an old fruit machine! So ask away.

Like many I have heard of the Isle of Wight Bat Hospital but I can’t say I know a lot about them so I decided to get in contact with them to learn a little more about these wonderful mammals. The IOW Bat Hospital was founded by Donna and Graham Street and has been active since 1996. The beds in their hospital are always full but they always have vacancies as they will never turn a bat away. All the bats they deal with have been found by members of the public and the majority of them have been injured, with most injuries caused by cats and both Donna and Graham know that it’s only natural for cats to want to play with bats as they have 7 cats themselves so never judge others. If you find a bat, don’t panic, gently pick it up with a gloved hand or with a tea towel and put it in a box which has several air holes in it. I can’t stress how important this is otherwise the bat won’t be able to breathe and will die. Then give Donna and Graham a call on 01983 406756 or 07771 605952 and they will come straight out and pick the bat up and take it back to the hospital to ascertain its injuries which could range from broken arms, fingers and tears to the wings. Even if the bat has more holes in its wings than a colander they can still give it antibiotics to help the wing repair itself but it is important they do this as soon as they can to stop infections and for more serious injuries they work closely with Dr Ian Green 6
of Green and Forster Veterinary Clinic. The IOW Bat Hospital nurse bats back to health and once they are fully recovered they will be released back to nature where they were found. I found out loads of bat facts and never realised that there are 17 breeding species of bat living in Britain and the most common bat is the pipistrelle and astonishingly this species only weighs between 4g-7g and its head and body is only 3.3cm – 4.8cm (about the size of your thumb) You can visit their website to find more information at www. isleofwightbathospital.org.uk or follow them on Facebook.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 At the start of October I got out and about on two different ward inspections. The first was with my fellow, neighbouring councillors, Chris Whitehouse and Julie Jones Evans accompanied by representatives of the Environment Agency, the manager of Southern Water and the IOW Council’s senior officer responsible for flooding issues. The purpose of this tour was to identify any ongoing problems, in our area, which may cause future flooding. Steps have been taken to improve the outlook during the winter months and these include time lapse cameras monitoring the trash grills at three locations on the Lukely Brook, automatically relayed back to the Environment Agency’s control centre.
in order to prevent leakage into the properties in Carisbrooke High Street. It seems to have been a long old road, but hopefully we are now winning on this one!
My second, and more recent, tour was accompanied by Bill Murphy who manages and monitors the PFI roads contract on behalf of the Council and Paul Herbert who heads up Island Roads. Paul brought along 2 of his management team. It was a most enlightening, and hopefully, constructive tour. The weather was so wonderful that it enabled us to cover a lot of ground on foot which meant we could look at things properly. Particular Also an alarm system points I highlighted has been installed were the need for on Southern Water’s reduced speed pond at the Eight Bells. through Carisbrooke Substantial clearing has High Street to 20mph taken place along the and similar speeds river from Bowcombe, on single track rural where it rises, to Town lanes (such as Millers Gate (at the bottom Lane, Froglands and of Hunny Hill where Clatterford Shute), it joins the Gunville I also requested Stream and enters the consideration of Medina). Hopefully this will enable the flow reducing the Whitcombe Road to 40mph to progress without backing up, but as always (between Cedar Hill and Chillerton due to the it will fall to the riparian owners to check high number of accidents on this stretch). I their own stretch of the river and remove any have asked for a serious review to be done obstructions or debris, or call for assistance to with a view to traffic calming on Clatterford do so. I do believe that if everyone remains Road, possibly in the form of official passing conscientious, coupled with the input from bays. I pursued the Pedestrian Crossing at the Agencies, we stand a good chance of Gunville and have been assured that, although averting disaster should the weather deluge delayed, it is still on the agenda. Another point as it did two years ago. Interesting to note that I raised was in relation to the bins at Priory that 2 properties we observed had received View Point - these are constantly overflowing assistance in the form of a grant from the and being emptied by foxes and seagulls. A Environment Agency to enable them to flood new design (vermin proof) has been developed proof their properties and Southern Water will and will hopefully soon be installed. be reinforcing their embankment at the pond,

I attended a workshop for MY LIFE A FULL LIFE, learning about how care for older people is being transformed across the Island. The aim is to change the face of social and health care on the Island, helping people live life to the full. To achieve this the programme is working in partnership with local people, voluntary organisations and the private sector to deliver a more coordinated approach to the delivery of health and social care services for older people, and people with long term conditions on the Island. A board game has been produced which helps you understand what you value in your life, what your preferences are and what you would like your life to be like in the twilight years. This in turn helps you to create a booklet that health professionals and family members can use when the time is right, to make sure you have the care you want. Ask you GP or visit www.mylifeafulllife.com to find out more about the project, it really is worthwhile thinking ahead and planning for our futures.
Following on from the installation of the silhouettes on the river bank in memory of the Gallipoli campaign and ensuing tragic loss of life of Newport men, the Parish Council has released funding for 2 more Great War projects, a textile project involving 100 squares to form a tapestry and paving stones in Simeon Park on Carisbrooke Road. These projects are turning out to be diverse and very interesting leaving a legacy for generations to come.
The memorial for the Newport Bombing of 1943 is coming along nicely the IW College have made a prototype, which is made from house bricks to reflect the fact that this was a civilian tragedy in which 20 people from Newport lost their lives. Mrs Pascoe who still lives in Newport wanted a memorial to commemorate the event, she lost her mother when their house in Chapel Street was hit and Mrs Pascoe’s eyesight was permanently damaged as a result. I’ll update 14
Our 20 mph campaign for Newport has stepped up a gear and we are now officially a campaign group for the national 20 Is Plenty organisation and our email address is newportIOW@20splentyforus.org.uk. The primary schools in Newport have been invited to design posters for a competition and the winners will be printed and distributed throughout the parish area. This is just stage one of the campaign. I will be meeting with people form Public Health and Adult Social Care to talk about the benefits of slower speeds for people’s lives and working up more strategies to get a zone for Newport. Finally look out for Newport Business Association’s Christmas Window competition where there are hundreds of pounds of gift vouchers up for winning. This will be launching at the end of November and the County Press/Cross Print will have entry forms printed to make it easy to enter.

We initially prepare the existing surface using a high-pressure jet washer system and primer, before applying your chosen resin stone combination. The overlays typically take 1-2 days with minimal inconvenience.
Finishing
We also offer a range of natural or blended stone and surrounding landscaping options including moon stone to truly personalise your resin installation.
