We’ve just completed a project at the rear of the Lord Louis Library, near the back of the Children’s section. The area in question was attracting anti-social behaviour, creating an area that was not pleasant and causing disturbance in the library. The Police asked us if we could erect a fence with a gate, to protect the site and improve the area. It’s already made a big difference with the library and police teams, each saying how happy they are with it.

The 20mph conference was a great success and I was overwhelmed by the support from across the Island from communities who want 20mph in their areas. The Perfect Shot I think this months front cover picture is so captivating and shows what beautiful wildlife we have here on the Island. The photo was taken at Alum Bay by local wildlife and photography enthusiast Zoe Cox. Zoe says that although she has lived here on the Island all her life it’s only been in the last year or so that she has taken an interest in local wildlife, especially red squirrels, foxes and birds of prey. Zoe is really enjoying her new hobby and only recently brought her camera which goes everywhere she does as she never wants to miss an opportunity to catch a moment in time forever… When Zoe took this picture there was a group of about 7 foxes but this particular vixen took a liking to Zoe and was happy to sit and pose whilst she snapped away and as you can see she got the ‘perfect shot’.
If you would like to promote your business A big thank you to Zoe for allowing us to use in the next issue email islandmagazines@ this photo and we can’t wait to see what she gmail.com for a rate card and details of our captures next. special introductory offer or call Debbie on 07880 587931

Chickpea and Butter Bean Quick and Easy Goulash. Thank you to everyone who contacted me to say they tried last months recipe of butternut squash soup. Now Autumn is here it’s time for stews and goulashes. This recipe changes each time I make it as I add different ingredients and leave some others out and you can adapt yours to suit what you have available in the fridge or cupboard. It’s a rustic dish and there is no right way and no wrong way, but the end results is a hearty bowl of goodness which can be served on its own as a vegetarian dish or as a side dish to a roast chicken breast. I call it a goulash but you might think its more of a stew. Ingredients 1 large red onion cut into chunks 1 red, orange or yellow pepper cut into bite size chunks 2 cloves of garlic crushed Courgette halved and sliced 1 tin chickpeas drained 1 tin of butter beans drained 2 teaspoons cumin 2 teaspoons coriander 2 teaspoons chilli powder (adjust depending on strength and how hot you like it) ½ teaspoon turmeric 1 can chopped tomatoes Splash of cold water Salt and pepper 2 tablespoons of oil Natural yoghurt Method Heat the oil in a large frying pan or saucepan, then fry the onion for 5 mins until beginning to soften. Add the spices, pepper, crushed garlic and courgettes, stir and cook for a further 3 mins. Add in the chickpeas and butter beans and seasoning, stir again gently and cook for a couple of minutes then add in the tin of tomatoes and the splash of cold water. Gently simmer for around 10 minutes (if it looks like it is getting dry add another splash of water) and then serve with a dollop of natural yoghurt and some crusty bread.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart continued. Another Flood Watch Training session has taken place at the Riverside Centre, I would like to assure you that every effort is being made to protect from flooding, but please, if you are on or near the river – or at risk of flooding, do ensure that you have taken the necessary steps to protect yourself and to keep informed as the winter approaches. I hope that you all enjoyed Isle of Wight Day as much as I did. It was great to see so many people putting up bunting and embracing the whole idea. I attended a great tea party at the Gunville Methodist Chapel hosted by the Gunville Association in the afternoon and in the evening I attended a free concert in Carisbrooke Castle Museum. Virgil Philpott, the Museum Manager, and Justin Smith serenaded us with a fabulous array of Isle of Wight Folk songs from several centuries. It was both very enjoyable and informative and seemed a very appropriate way to celebrate the Island.

The seasonal flu vaccine is given to millions of people in the UK each year and it is impossible to get flu from having the flu jab because the vaccine doesn’t contain live viruses. A very small number of people experience side effects such as aching muscles, but this is simply the immune system responding to the vaccine. For the most part, seasonal flu vaccine side effects are mild or often non-existent. The most common side effect is soreness around the site of the injection. These symptoms are a lot less debilitating than having flu.

The injected flu vaccine is offered free of charge on the NHS to people who are at risk to ensure that they are protected against catching flu.

Are YOU a Survivor of Domestic Abuse? In today’s society it is an unfortunate fact that many people are in abusive relationships. When this eventually comes to a head often the abused goes to a refuge or similar safe place. During the time spent at this safe place they receive excellent training to help them deal with their situation and help them move on to an extent. However, the nature of some abusive relationships is such that many abused people have not been allowed to develop even the most fundamental skills even as an adult. Whilst the training received from the refuge or similar is very good and is a fantastic foundation for moving on, once that support ceases, as it has to, the person may be left in a vulnerable state and risks making the same life style choices in terms of partners as they did before. Unfortunately this means that the same cycle of behaviour repeats and the abused person can end up in a similarly bad relationship and the whole cycle starts again. The Break the Cycle ‘Mind the Gap’ course aims to build on the foundation gained during the period spent in the refuge and equip the abused person emotionally and practically to move forward in a positive way and literally break that cycle. Realistically not everybody is either fortunate enough to go through a refuge or feels that they need to as they may have made their own arrangements. The ‘Mind the Gap’ course is flexible enough to incorporate people coming from diverse situations which may or may not include formal help from refuges or the like. Break the Cycle Community Interest Company has been lucky enough to receive Lottery funding to run courses to help people who have escaped domestic abuse. Whether you have recently moved away from an abusive relationship or are managing to survive after some time, their course, made up of six modules, will help you to live a more fulfilled life, build your confidence and help you move forward. Break the Cycle’s ‘Mind the Gap’ course uses a range of training material that complements each participants learning style. The modules, each of 2 hours duration, are interactive and engaging allowing the participants to learn through practice and experience rather than just theory. Each participant will be given their own journal to track their progress. We are looking for volunteers to commit to taking the whole course, at no cost, with the proviso that they feed back to the company their opinions on the content, the experience and any other findings.
