The autumn is an exciting time for us at the Friends of St Mary’s Hospital. This is when we sit down and look at all the applications that come in from the Hospital staff who want to purchase equipment and resources to make patients’ treatment and hospital stays just that bit better. This activity is the core of what the Charity is all about. We are often asked why the NHS cannot provide these things. The answer is that the NHS must statutorily provide a level of resources to meet needs. What we are asked for is equipment that goes that bit further to improve treatment and outcomes. Think of it like buying a car. Four wheels will get you from A to B, but a better model will increase comfort and your travelling experience. We cannot provide everything that is asked for and it is sad to have to refuse funds for some very worthwhile items. But we take great care to discuss all the applications with senior hospital staff and they help us maintain a sensible perspective on what priorities we set for our deliberations. Once our decisions are made, the applicants are informed and the purchase process begins. It can take some time to get everything in and we keep a keen eye on when items are delivered so that we can go and see them in use. Examples of what we will be providing this year are special brightly coloured and safe crockery and cutlery for dementia patients and a sub epidermal moisture scanner which will assist in the reduction of the occurrence of pressure sores.

Nick Scott-Denness (left) and Paul Newnham with the pain-relieving equipment.

We also endeavour to provide certain items for staff - for example, last year we provided comfortable furniture for the rest rooms for the pathology lab.

This year we have provided grants to two doctor’s surgeries for equipment that will mean less hospital visits. This is convenient for patients and also relieves some pressure on St Mary’s itself. We allocated approximately £79,000 worth of grants for 2017. All this is possible because of two main things. One is the incredible generosity of Islanders who donate from putting spare coins in boxes right up to remembering us in their will. The other is the fantastic team of over 60 volunteers who run our cafes in the hospital foyer, at the Laidlaw Centre and in Ryde Health and Well Being Clinic. We also have a well stocked shop in the Hospital foyer. You can help us by using these facilities as much as you can. The coffee is great and less than half the price of high street brands. All the profit after running costs goes to the Friends’ Fund so that extra cup of coffee may well help to fund something you or a loved one will feel the benefit of when receiving hospital treatment.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07792672198 T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk

The Harbour open day was well attended by members of the public and they let the architects and planners know how they felt the Harbour should evolve. People were asked to write a postcard imagining that they were sat in the Harbour in 2023. Ideas ranged from a historic working harbour with cafés, a car free zone, artists workshops, river taxis from the mainland and a place that was vibrant. It’s also important that any Harbour development knits in with the rest of Newport and doesn’t compete with the town. Of course we have seen many plans for the Harbour over the years and some might say “here we go again”, but with a dedicated Regeneration team in place and the current financial situation, this will happen. There will be a series of public consultations , so do take the time to feed your feelings and ideas in.

Clubs and activities for young people are much valued by us and the provision and funding for them has seen a drop in recent years. I’ve been recently speaking to some of the groups in Newport who deliver projects and events (this doesn’t include Scouts, Guides etc). The feeling is that the future funding from the IW Council is under threat, given the need for them to make £7m of savings next year. I have spoken to the other members of Newport Parish Council and we are going to have in-depth discussions with people involved in youth services and formulate a plan to ensure the young people of Newport always have something of interest to do and access to age appropriate information such as health. Ryde and Ventnor have already gone into this area, having their own youth officer and it will be good to hear about their experiences. I intend to put a proposal together for our Newport Parish Council budget 2018/19.

The bridge from Sea Street into the Harbour will continue to be closed to vehicles for some time I understand and I have written to the council to ask to improve the access for cyclists as it is difficult at the moment Each week there are activities in Newport, use and causes some conflict with pedestrians. this link to find out more details www.iwight. Residents have reported how nice and quiet it com/Residents/Schools-and-Learning/Isleis in the area without the cars and boy racers of-Wight-YouthTube/Youth-Offer/West-andat night. Central The Harbour Food Market every Friday is doing well offering street food, coffee and a nice environment to sit and enjoy. It is due to extend it’s trading hours until 8.30 in the evening soon.

I hold a Newport Central surgery every Saturday 9.30-10.30 please email me or ring to book a slot or just turn up.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 This month has been one of celebrations….. I was so pleased, as a Trustee of Carisbrooke Castle Museum, to attend the celebration and presentation to our wonderful volunteers receiving their QAV awards. Seventy people attended the ceremony which was staged in the Museum in Carisbrooke Castle and the awards were presented by Her Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant, Major General Martin White supported by the High Sheriff Ben Rouse. A cream tea was provided and the event was enjoyed by all. I also had the pleasure of attending the Lord Louis Library where the presentations for the Summer Reading Challenge were given. Over 788 children enrolled at Newport Library alone and each read 6 books or more to keep up their reading levels over the summer holidays. Such a great challenge, I do believe that a love of reading instilled at an early age is a gift for life and I must praise our Library service for their commitment and enthusiasm for this project. It’s easy to forget what a huge contribution the Libraries make, from lending books to enabling IT use for research, online newspapers right 14

through to job applications. Meetings are held there, early years support, health information etc…a complete community hub. If you aren’t a library user I would recommend that you investigate what’s going on there…..you might be surprised. I know that it may have caused some inconvenience, but it is good to see that Island Roads are now repairing the wall on Carisbrooke Road. This is an iconic part of Carisbrooke seen in photos going back to the 19th century. It is always good to see our village being restored and kept the way we like it. I have had yet further meetings about the crossing….all I can say is that it is progressing. Southern Vectis feel that in the interests of safety it may be necessary to move the bus stop a little closer to Newport….as yet this is undecided. I went, again, to visit and review the Anaerobic Digester….I took the opportunity to again question the transit of the very large tractors and trailers that seem to be constantly on our roads. I asked if the numbers could not be reduced as there are 3 peak times from mid-May to mid-October. I am told that they will in the future hope to have two harvests of 3 weeks each starting at the end of June/July and end September/ October. This should mean a reduction in the period of time that these vehicles are on the roads.
