• We have received a report from a resident who received a call from a funeral THIS SIZE ADVERT plan company offering to carry out her COULD BE funeral much cheaper than her existing YOURS FOR JUST £13 plan. She engaged with them initially but For more info email then realised that they might not be genuine and on speaking to a local funeral directors islandmagazines@gmail.com she realised that the offer they were making or call 07880 587931 was unrealistic and it was probably an attempt to get her details – a phishing scam. When checking the number they called from online she realised that there were a lot of negative reports about them so instructed her bank not to allow payments to be taken. • We would like to make you aware of a new service recently launched. The scheme is urging people to “stop, hang up and call 159” to check that calls purporting to be from your bank are for real. The idea is to help those who believe they have been contacted by scammers claiming to be their bank, or by fraudsters who encourage them to transfer money. According to Stop Scams UK, criminal gangs stole over £470 million from individuals and small businesses last year by pretending to be a bank or other service provider, encouraging consumers to falsely make a payment or transfer money. When calling 159, you’ll be taken through an option menu in which each bank that has signed up to the service is read aloud. Customers are then able to use their telephone keypad to be put through to their bank. You’ll then be directed through to your bank’s customer service department. Note that calling the service will cost the same as making a national rate call, which means if you’ve got inclusive minutes it’ll be taken from those. For those who bank with firms not yet involved in the 159 pilot – you should continue to contact your bank by using the number on the back of your debit or credit card. Remember Scam emails can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk and scam texts to 7726

ith the clocks going back an hour and the night’s drawing in there is no doubt that Autumn is here. For me I try to keep as busy as I would in the Spring and Summer months and if our unpredictable British weather allows, I will continue being outdoors as much as I can, just this time I will be kitted out in a hat, scarf, and gloves. Even a gentle stroll to a local beauty spot with a flask of warming soup (see our recipe on page 14) will do you good. It is important that we look after our mental health as well as our physical health. Around this time of year, I try my hand at a new hobby to keep me busy. The list of crafty and non-crafty hobbies is extensive, and I am hoping to jump on the macrame trend and fill my home with macrame plant hangers. For those of a certain age, you will remember when this was a popular craft first time around and you may even have a plant hanger, wall hanging or even a lampshade from back then!!! Inside this issue you will find news from local councillors, information, editorial, puzzles and adverts from a fantastic range of advertisers offering a variety of services. As always, please use their services and support these local businesses. Our ‘Dates for your Dairy’ section lists a variety of events happening both in your local area and across the island and there should be something for everyone to enjoy. I hope you all have a fantastic November, stay safe and I look forward to catching up with you next month.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council have now completed the High Street property purchase and are the proud owners of 64 High Street - the former Edinburgh Woollen Mill store. It’s a great space, plenty of room on the ground floor for our meetings and community use. We can now invest in our own building at last (without raising the precept to Newport residents) and have an appreciating asset and a stake in the High Street - “We Believe in Newport”. The plan is to put in the technology to enable improved engagement with the council, live stream, microphones, hearing loops etc - it is important that the council becomes more accessible to all residents.

building is quite exciting as it’s an early Victorian building with a 1990’s modern shop front - creating a new shop front more in keeping with the building will be a huge improvement and also uplift the street it sits in.

There’s quite a bit of work to do before we can start to use it, making sure we comply with all health and safety requirements, carry out upgrades to the utilities and improve the lighting. A quick lick of paint and cleaning the existing carpet will allow us to open up in December with some pop-up shops which will be run by Shaping Newport.

The Saturday Market in St Thomas’s Square is doing really well, attracting new traders each week and new customers. Cllrs Smith and Lowthion from Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council are there most weeks with a stand with information for residents and visitors, which is proving popular.

The rest of the uses will necessitate professional planning, to ensure we get the most out of the building - it needs to be flexible, and we have a duty to get residents value for money on this investment. We have also applied to Newport’s High Street Heritage Action Zone for a grant to improve the shop front and create a new entrance from the High Street to the upper floor. If approved this will be the first scheme to go live for this part of the Historic England programme. The HSHAZ has also had a recently purchased property in the heart of the town come forward for a grant. This particular

The lack of our Post Office is still the most pressing issue to resolve in Newport, it’s causing a lot of inconvenience to people, some of whom are having to get taxis to Pan or Carisbrooke. I’ve had some interest from a couple of community groups about creating a new post office and there’s also a possibility of a retailer taking it on. I just want to reassure people that I am working on getting our PO back.

The big day in our calendar is coming up on November 20th - our Christmas fair, activities and light switch on. This year we are having a skating rink for the day down on Newport Harbour (near Hillside) it’s free of charge, but please do book your slot by emailing Laura.Jones@newportwight.org.uk The rest of the activities will be in St Thomas’s and St James’s Square, including market, Father Christmas, music, animals, activities and food stalls. The switch on will be around 5.45pm. Shaping Newport - which is a 3-way partnership between Newport Business continued over the page

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Association, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and IW Council - will be submitting a proposal to IWC to pilot a scheme of free parking in some town centre car parks. The proposal is to allow 1hr free parking (ticket required) to assist in the post Covid recovery and to create some equity with Ryde, which currently has 200 more free parking spaces than Newport. NCCC is offering to help towards the cost of this scheme and NBA are convinced that offering this free parking will not only attract visitors but also increase parking income to IWC - figures suggest that a 12month pilot will cost a total of about £100k in lost revenue. Data gathering will be essential to gauge the success of the scheme - we have footfall counters in Newport so we can easily track numbers of people arriving in the car parks - Lugley, Chapel and Sea Street. We all hope the scheme will be approved and give a most welcome boost to Newport. Arts Council England have announced that the Isle of Wight is to receive more funding over the next 3 years, becoming a Priority Place. They are specifically looking at uplifting the communities in Newport, Ryde and the Bay area, which have significant areas of deprivation - accessing creative activities can have a profound effect on well-being. Independent Arts in St James’s Square (ex Monsoon building) is already making an impact, do pop in and see what activities they have going on. Next year is the bicentenary of the tragic death of Valentine Gray, the orphan sweep who was found dead in January 1822, in the “Tanty” an area between South Street and Orchard Street near where the car park is now. His death shocked the island and reverberated across the country, contributing

to legislation to protect children from such situations. Before Brian Greening’s death, I had been talking to him about doing something to remember Valentine, 200 years on. Brian wrote the history which we will share next year and also working on a bigger project - looking at the life of children in 2022. I’ll share more as the project comes together. One thing we want to do is put a new inscription on the monument in Church Litten - there are 2 blank faces, and our intention is to put something fitting to record the bicentenary. I’ve been in touch with Historic England to help guide us through the process to make sure it’s done properly. The monument was originally made possible by public subscription, so it feels right that the people of Newport remember Valentine 200 years on.

November Facts November actually translates into “ninth month” in Latin. It was the ninth month of the year before January and February were added to the Roman Calendar. Despite its change to 11th position, November was never renamed. November begins on the same day of the week as March every year and also February except in leap years. November is the only month used to represent a letter in the phonetic alphabet. November 1st is National Cook for Your Pets Day. (I don’t think I need to add anything more to this) The fifth of November marks the day in 1605, a group of Roman Catholics plotted to blow up Parliament while King James I was inside. Fortunately, the plot was foiled. The Anglo-Saxons had quite the fitting name for November. It’s usually at this time of the year in the northern hemisphere that cold winds start to chill you to the bone, and as such, they called it “Wind Monath”, or wind month. The November birth flower is the chrysanthemum. One of the world’s most popular cut flowers because of its variety. Available in a huge spectrum of colours these flowers are thought to bring good luck and joy into any home Those born in November can be born under one of two very different star signs. If you’re born before November 23rd then you have the sign of Scorpio. Those born on November 23rd or later have the sign of Sagittarius. Scorpios are said to value trust and honesty above other things, as well as being quite intense yet imaginative people. Those born under the sign of Sagittarius are quite different, being energetic and idealistic, while also generous and open-minded. According to research published in 2008, serial killers are more likely to be born in November than any other month. Happy Birthday to all those celebrating this month.
