Hare Today Gone Tomorrow... Except this isn’t the case with Nick Edwards and his hares which he continues to frequently photograph following a distribution survey conducted by the Isle of Wight Natural History and Archaeological Society. Nick took up the challenge of locating a stable colony of hares to study and photograph at dawn and dusk on a friendly farm in Cowes. Nick has very kindly allowed Island Magazines to use one of his prints on the front cover and choosing the best hare picture from his vast collection is nearly one of the hardest tasks I have had to date. Nick began his passion for natural history and photography from a very young age, following in his father’s footsteps; a gifted photographer and wildlife artist himself. Nick is a founder member of Isle of Wight Ornithological Group and was a volunteer for National Trust at Newtown. After Nick’s professional engineering career finished with a very early retirement 6 years ago, he used his time to re-introduce himself to commercial photography which was once a major part of his life. With customers on and off the Island, Nick is a frequent photographer for the RNLI film unit and publications and is a member of the crew at Cowes Lifeboat Station. Hares aren’t the only topic of Nick’s amazing photography skills and his website www. wightseen.co.uk is home to hundreds of pictures of varied subjects captured here on our beautiful Island. Seeing really is believing and I highly recommend that you have a look. If you are a landowner and have a colony of hares which are frequently sighted and would be happy to allow Nick to come and photograph them, then please get in touch with him via the contact details on his website.

Welcome and thank you for picking up a copy of the October issue. Whilst writing this, its a tad blustery outside and I am seeing my hopes of an Indian Summer slipping away. I think I need to accept that the weather is likely to stay more suited to Autumn. I’m certainly not complaining as I think our Island is beautiful whatever the season. On pages 14 and 15 you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ and there is still lots happening on the Island and if you have an event taking place in the next couple of months please get in contact so we can share the details. You can read the story behind this months stunning front cover on page 2. I hope you enjoy this issue and please keep using the services of our advertisers as there are some great local businesses out there. I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 This month I am concentrating on Heritage news in our area. On the 29th September, the volunteers at Carisbrooke Castle Museum (an independent charitable trust, not part of English Heritage) will be having their dedication, commitment, and service recognised when they will be presented with the prestigious Queens Award for Voluntary Service, by the Lord Lieutenant, Major General White. This award is the highest award that can be given to local volunteers, and is considered the MBE equivalent for such groups. The award is given in recognition of outstanding work done in a community by volunteers who regularly devote their time to helping others. Our significant team of well over 50 volunteers at Carisbrooke Castle Museum really deserve this award. Their contribution; given with enthusiasm, and commitment, in a vast array of different roles, is extremely highly valued, and wholly deserves acclaim and sincere thanks. The award, to me, represents what all of the volunteers who have given their time and dedication throughout the long history of our Museum of Isle of Wight History, truly merit. I feel it is worth noting just a few of the significant roles which volunteers undertake for us: Front-of house at the Museum – to meet and greet, and be there, for the visitors; Arranging and running outreach sessions for people in residential care, or for community groups who support older people; Recording memories of older Islanders for the future; Helping with the care of our vast collections (consisting of more than 30, 000 items); Assisting in the cataloguing process and records for Museum items; Cataloguing and helping with the care of books in our Local History library; Transcriptions of documents; Photographing/ scanning items, to add to our database; Assisting in research and helping
getting objects out of stores; Practical work in the Museum galleries and stores; Administration and financial work; Giving talks to local groups both at the Museum and in the Community; Fund raising for the Museum. This list is not exhaustive... which just shows how invaluable the work of our volunteers is! Although based at Carisbrooke Castle, this group are in fact protecting and preserving the Heritage of the whole Island for future generations as can be seen in the diversity of the collections. So in contemplating Heritage it is good to know that Newport Parish Council are hosting Newport Living History project which aims to research existing and lost street communities. It will put on a series of events next year to show case the local history of Newport and Carisbrooke. Perhaps you have memories of Millers lane, Priory Farm or Castle lane? To get involved come to the next event on October 7th 10-12 at Lord Louis Library. “The Friends of Newport & Carisbrooke Cemeteries” has now been established as a ‘no membership’ volunteer group with the aim of helping to care for the local cemeteries and record those buried there. Three successful sessions have been held to clear vegetation from grave markers in an older part of Mountjoy Cemetery revealing some markers which previously were completely hidden. The FoNCC have produced an e-newsletter which was circulated to the volunteers and supporters; a open talk by Brian Greening at the Riverside Centre 29th September has also been arranged.” I know that I have mentioned FoNCC before, but I really would urge anyone with an interest in local history to get involved. I have managed a few hours working with them and have been delighted to help uncover hidden tomb stones and see history coming back to life.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans I think everyone would agree that we all want to see Newport, The Island’s County Town thrive and become a desired destination for visitors and tourists alike. There is a feeling of what we want but no plan exists on how to achieve this. Newport Parish Council works on making life better for residents, Newport Business Association works at making the town more vibrant and the Isle of Wight Council has a larger economic and social role including great plans for the development of Newport Harbour. Now is the time for these bodies to work together more comprehensively, harness resources and produce a plan for the future of Newport. I’m pleased to say this will be happening this year with a Newport Place Plan, which will be produced professionally, looking at areas such as transport, housing, green spaces, leisure, heritage, digital, economy, arts and culture. This will involve a lot of research and consultation, so I would encourage everyone to get involved in helping to shape the future of our town. The IW Council is also refreshing the Island Plan (our development guidance plan) so this is really good timing to get the Newport Plan part of this. Plans are coming together for the Newport Christmas Fair on 2nd December, there will be a street food market, arts and craft stall in the Minster, traditional fairground rides, a snow dome, father Christmas, Huskies and lots of entertainment including The Scottish Fiddlers. Newport Carnival will lead us into the Christmas Light Switch-On. 12
The day will coincide with Small Business Saturday, so lots of reasons to visit Newport that day. Save the date! I’m moving ahead creating more street art in Newport and the focus will be on the empty properties in Lower St James’ Street first. I’ve been working with a street artist from Sandown, Tony Trowbridge and the aim is to bring some of the history and culture of Newport to life through art installations. If any resident/ business in the town centre would like to have a painting on their property just get in touch with me. On a Friday the new Street Food Market is going well, lots of local food producers offering delicious lunches or just pop by for a coffee with a lovely view of the Harbour. I am working with a local business to set up a new youth night in Newport which will provide a fun space for younger teenagers in Newport. Feedback from our younger residents is that there is not much to do so I feel it’s going to be really important to develop more activities for them through the Parish Council and other partners. The shelters in Church Litten are proving to be popular and we are working on making the area more accessible for people, especially those with a mobility disability. My surgery is on Saturday mornings between 9.30 and 10.30 at Quay Arts Centre and you can call me on 521068, or email julie.jonesevans@iow.gov.uk

Gutter Clearing As we head into Autumn, the leaves will be falling from the trees and could potentially be falling into, and blocking your gutters which in turn could make your house insurance null and void as most insurers now state that gutter clearing falls under general maintenance and should be looked at regularly. When your guttering is blocked, rain water will over flow and will eventually cause damage to the structural elements of the building, water will erode the building material and can ultimately cause damage to the foundations, drainage system and the paving. Internally, damp will appear and create mold and mildew. Having your gutters cleared once a year will significantly reduce the risk of any blockages caused by leaves, moss or any other debris. Dazzle External Cleaning offer the latest technology in gutter clearing saying goodbye to costly scaffolding and ladders their hi tech powered vacuum with portable video camera which allow them to survey and clean gutters from ground level. Dazzle External Cleaning also offer soft washing and pressure washing or all external surfaces including cladding, render, patios and roofs.
