Over 50? Your Community needs YOU to speak up Pan & Barton Older Voices Circle After lockdown, we have re-started the local Pan & Barton Older Voices Circle—one of the Isle of Wight circles. If you are over 50 and want to be heard—about ANY subject—the Circle gives you the opportunity to have your say, be heard and then have ideas taken forward. We meet monthly at Downside Community Centre for an informal gathering, sometimes with interesting speakers and activities, and we share tea, cakes and good company, particularly good for anyone a little lonely. We would love you to join us. Our next meeting is on Monday 25 October, 2-4pm and on the 4th Monday of each month thereafter.

utumn is approaching and the island is a beautiful place to be during this season. The changes in nature will be visible around every corner and there are so many wonderful walks to enjoy. You really can’t beat island life!
The island has been very busy this year with visitors from the mainland, some are regulars, but many have ventured here for the first time, and I am constantly hearing how lucky we are to live here, to have this on our doorsteps every day... but it does make me wonder if having it here right under our noses we forget the beauty and just take it for granted. I am now going to go about my business with my eyes slightly wider open to take in all the beauty that is right here in front of me. In this issue you will find local news and information for your area, mixed with advertising, features, editorials and of course our puzzle pages which I know many of you are a big fan of. As always thank you for picking up a copy and I’d love to hear your thoughts on anything featured in this month’s issue and please do get in touch with me if you have any news to share or are organising an event. I hope you have a safe and happy month and I look forward to catching up with you again soon.

‘The Beast’ Last month’s front cover of the tractor received lots of compliments and my inside story about my love of tractors caught the attention of one local resident, Geoff Horsnell, who contacted me to tell me about his ‘pride and joy’ and invited me over to meet the old girl!

Geoff is the proud owner of a Fordson Super Major and brought her in 2017 from a farm in Steeple Ashton, where she had sat for many years unused but thankfully covered over. She is still in her natural colours, as she would have been when she came off the factory line (Empire Blue for everything but the wheels which are Fordson Orange), obviously she has one or two marks on her but what 60-yearold hasn’t? Her engine purrs and she is in great shape. Geoff does the odd favour for his neighbour by topping one of her fields ensuring she keeps in good working order. This tractor is affectionately called ‘The Beast’ and this name came about after her recent cameo role in a drama that was filmed on the Island. She was spotted by a location scout who happened to see her sitting on the driveway and after photos were sent to the Director, she was offered a scene in the drama ‘The Beast Must Die’. On the day of filming, her scene took place on the road leading down from The Needles New Battery and involved her having a very near miss with an Aston Martin being driven by the leading lady. Meeting ‘The Beast’ really made my day and having a ride on her made my year!
It’s Goatober The Isle of Wight’s very first Goatober launched in 2019, in an effort to raise awareness of goat meat, milk, cheese and fudge produced on the Island. Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, Green Barn Dairy Goat Farm, plus several butchers, meat wholesalers and shops encouraged islanders and a wide range of catering outlets to add goat products to their menus throughout the month of October. Goat is the most commonly eaten red meat in the world, as many cultures do not eat beef or pork. Goat meat makes up around 60% of the red meat produced worldwide and yet in countries such as the UK – where the wool and lamb trade has dominated – it has always been one of the much lesser consumed meats. However, because of increasing ethnic diversity it is starting to become far more readily available.

Nestling between Shorwell and Chale Green, is Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, owned by Simone and David. They started off with a small herd of Golden Guernsey dairy goats and Pygmy goats, and then bought some Boer meat goats. Goat meat has been available on the Island for a number of years, but commercial production has not been regularly maintained. After obtaining EHO approval a few years ago, with the help of a number of Island butchers, they tempted a few select pubs and restaurants with their goat meat, which have been added to their menu or to their specials boards. All reported great interest from diners and despite covid interruptions - consumption rates on the Island continue to rise quite rapidly. Islanders are being encouraged to try adding goat meat to their menus. To place an order, book a smallholding visit or arrange a Goatober presentation in 2021, ring Simone or David on 01983 551527.

An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place giving informal education about dementia, guidance and signposting to other services. We welcome people with dementia, their families, carers, professionals and anyone with an interest in dementia.
What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services.

News Report by Julie Jones-Evans. Tel 521068 or 07886 437688 E: julie.jones-evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans After many months of surveys, reports and financial preparation, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council has bought a substantial building in the High Street. I’ll be in a position next month to say Which building it is, once the legal part has been completed. This is our first major investment into a community asset, we have borrowed £400,000 from the Public Works Loan Board over a 12-year period, which will cover the purchase and the first phase of works. NCCC will use it as our base for the team, public meetings, consultations, pop up shops and a long-anticipated Heritage Centre for Newport. We have had a feasibility study done, showing possible uses for the upstairs and how the large ground floor can be reconfigured to allow a flexible space for our potential uses. The building is in the High Street Heritage Action Zone area, and we are able to apply for grant funding from Historic England to improve the shop front and potentially restore a front entrance to the upper floor. This will also be helpful for the HSHAZ programme in showing what can be achieved. A nearby building may also have its frontage improved via the grant funding so together a real impact can start to be made. Newport is going to apply for City Status as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations - if successful it will be a tremendous accolade and boost for Newport. NCCC will be paying for a professional bid writer, commissioned by the IW Council to collate all the necessary history, royal connections, evidence of
civic pride and innovation that the application calls for. The application needs to be submitted by December. Ministers will make recommendations to the Queen for which places should be given this prestigious award. Her Majesty the Queen will be the first British monarch to have reached 70 years on the throne. This is a truly historic moment for the country and hopefully for Newport, Isle of Wight. The new Saturday Market in St Thomas’s Square is going from strength to strength and gives an opportunity for businesses to put a toe in the water to try out their products. The new Pannier Market is a good initiative - for a small fee and commission you can try a 1m x1m stall and the Market Days team sell on your behalf. Market Days are working with the HSHAZ to provide family activities and entertainment that help people learn about Newport and spend more time in the Square. Another bit of good news - Arts Council England has announced that the IW is one of 11 places in their South West Region to be part of Priority Places and Let’s Create programme. “by 2030 England will be a country in which the creativity of each individual is valued and given the chance to flourish, and where everyone has access to a remarkable range of high-quality cultural experiences”. The IW has been chosen due to its vulnerability to recover post Covid and other criteria, as part of the Government’s Levelling Up agenda.

News Report from Cllr Joe Lever - Carisbrooke & Gunville Mobile - 07736 663 657 | Email - joe.lever@iow.gov.uk Facebook - @CllrJoeLever | Instagram - @cllrjoelever Is it really October already?! So, what has been happening the past month… The Castle Lodge HMO saga goes on but may be settled by the time this update is published. It will have been discussed by the planning committee and the decision to remove or keep the 3-year review condition will have been decided. Residents and I will have spoken on the application, and I hope people are satisfied with my words, which should be reflective of the conversations I’ve been having. The hybrid application for development off Forest Hills/Arthur Moody Drive was heard by the planning committee and both aspects were refused. Myself, Cllr Ambrosini and residents spoke against the applications and the planning committee clearly agreed with what was said. There’s every chance the applicant will choose to appeal but we’ll have to wait and see! I’d just like to also remind residents about the current public consultation on the draft Island Planning Strategy. This runs until 5pm on Friday 1 October 2021. You can view the draft Plan and make comments using the following URL: www.iow.gov. uk/planthewight Now on to what is becoming an increasingly frustrating issue… Roads. I’ve been in conversation with residents for a number of roads within the ward boundary. I agree with all issues raised to me by residents and am constantly chasing them up at the Council. I appreciate 10
progress can feel slow, but I’m determined we get answers on a clear plan for Carisbrooke & Gunville. Residents of different roads are also now communicating with each other to push for change and there’s certainly strength in numbers. I feel the growing sense of community is a silver lining in all of this! I’ll now take this opportunity to once again plug the community speed watch scheme. If this sounds like something you’d like to be involved with, please get in touch. There are calls for volunteers for Clatterford Road, Carisbrooke High Street and Gunville Road. Onto some Parish matters… Gunville Community Association, with help from other volunteers and community connectors from Independent Arts, will be starting up the Nellie’s coffee afternoons once again at the Gunville Methodist Church. The first will have been on Wednesday 22nd September. Further times and dates - I believe - are yet to be confirmed, so look out for those and pop in for a chat and coffee! Myself and our excellent NCCC staff have been meeting about some exciting projects for Victoria Rec. It’s been wonderful seeing the Rec thrive into a real hub for the community over the past few years and we’re looking to build on that. So, watch this space! As always, if you need to get in touch, please use the contact details at the top of this page.

Being silly by Maggie Currie As children we have an instinctual grasp of humour and appreciate all that is silly as a matter of course. Even the smallest absurdities provoke joyous gales of giggles or laughter. As we get older, this innate ability to see the value of silliness can diminish. Work takes precedence over play, and we seem to have less incentive to exercise our imaginative minds by focusing on what is funny. When we remember childhood, we may recall the pleasures of dressing up in funny costumes, reciting nonsense poems, making up strange games, or playing pretend. This unabashed silliness nourished our vitality and creativity. We can take in this nourishment once again by giving ourselves permission to lighten up and be silly. Too often we believe it serves no purpose to encourage our inherent silliness that is an inborn aspect of self. We may believe it is at odds with the grown-up culture of maturity. We play yet we don’t lose ourselves in play, and our imaginations are never truly given free reign because we regard the products of irrational creativity as being valueless. Yet silliness itself constitutes a vital part of human existence on many levels. Our first taste of ethereal bliss is often a consequence of our willingness to dabble in what we deem outrageous, nonsensical, or absurd. We delight in ridiculousness not only because laughter is intrinsically pleasurable, but also because it serves as a reminder that existence itself is fun. Skipping, doodling, and singing funny songs are no less entertaining than they were when we were children. We need not lose all interest in these cheerful and amusing activities, but to make them a part of our lives we must be ready to sacrifice a little dignity and a lot of fear. Silliness should be regarded as a priority because so much of life is inescapably serious. Through the magic of imagination, you can be or become anything–a photographer, a professional athlete, a dancer, a pilot. Whether you take hundreds of silly pictures, revel in the adulation of your fans as you make the winning catch, boogie down rock-star style in front of your bedroom mirror, or turn your desk into a cockpit, the ensuing hilarity will help you see that light-hearted fun and adulthood are not at all incompatible. If this has resonated with you in any way, please get in touch. I offer coaching and mentoring to you – for you to make the changes you want to in your life. Build your confidence in your abilities. To help you to have more fun, more freedom and less stress. That is it. There is no catch. I believe in you. Get in touch today to book your coaching sessions.
My role is to hold space for you, to encourage, listen & align. You win, I win. I love my clients & adore coaching.
