Monthly Report for Newport by Julie Jones-Evans. 53 Victoria Road, Newport, IoW, PO30 2HB Tel 521068 or 07792672198 E: Julie.Jones-Evans@iow.gov.uk T: @juliejonesevans F: Julie Jones-Evans It has been fascinating to watch the refurbishment of the old Tomlinson’s building on the corner of Town Lane and South Street over the summer. A restaurant called Thompson’s has now opened it’s doors and seems to be thriving. Chef Robert Thompson was the country’s youngest Michelin starred chef in 2006 and since then he has been involved at the Hamborough in Ventnor and the George in Yarmouth. Robert said “As a chef who just loves to cook and be creative it has always been my dream to have my own place and now its here and happening. I am absolutely buzzing! I love the Island and can’t wait to be back in the kitchen.”

Crocker Street and Old Westminster Lane which are highly populated. Fortunately, if there is an adverse impact on residents due to increased traffic flows there is also a pot of money that can be used on transport. I have already raised the issue of having a new pedestrian crossing point and possibly traffic calming so pedestrians are always put first over the car. It’s a case of watch this space.

Whilst on the subject of transport the no 39 bus was due to be axed by Southern Vectis which serves Sylvan Drive and the town centre and Pan. Thanks to the hard work of Newport Councillors Matt Price and Geoff Lumley, the route will be saved for the next few years using money from the Pan housing development and an annual grant from the Parish Council. If the service had ceased it would have left many Newport is fortunate to have such an restaurant establish itself in the town and such people isolated in their homes which can be an endorsement really helps put the County devastating for one’s wellbeing. Town back on the map. I think it is great that Finally we had a fabulous Summer Fair at entrepreneurs are choosing Newport to do Victoria Rec to and I was so proud to have my business in. Grandfather, Neil Shutler cut the ribbon to mark the Parish Council’s involvement. He is Mill Street will soon be linked to Foxes Road up by Sainsbury’s by an extension of the road. a life Vice President of Newport Cricket club and has been using the rec since he was a I fought against this link when it was in the little boy, now his is on 97 not out! Quite an planning stages a few years ago, but such innings! a link was embedded in the Council’s sore strategies many from 1999. Back then the idea was to link Drill Hall Road with the Snowberry Road area, but land levels meant that a flyover road would have to be construction which was clearly unacceptable in this environment. So when the old Dairycrest site started to be developed one of the planning conditions was that a road had to be built crossing the Lukely Brook at Mill Street. The council will be monitoring traffic flows, as I and many residents are concerned about the amount of traffic that will be coming down Mill Street, 6

Monthly News Report for Carisbrooke by John Hobart. South Farm, Sandy Lane, Whitecroft. E-Mail: john.hobart@iow.gov.uk Mobile: 07717 716 663 Some of you may have read the article in the County Press Weekender (7th August) about the artist and sculptor Lawrence Holofcener. Laurence was shown in the article, with the golfer Tony Jacklin, unveiling a plaque that he had created as a homage to over 100 famous golfers. This was unveiled at the British Open at St Andrews in July. What most people don’t know is that Larry has been a resident on the Island on and off for some 20 plus years and he produced the bronze maquette of the young Queen Victoria on horseback, (pictured) which is now in the ownership of the IOW Council. Another casting of this bronze was presented to Coburg (twinned with Cowes) This bronze is unique as it represents Queen Victoria in her young and happy days, around the age that she would have come to live on the Isle of Wight, we are so familiar with images of her in her widows reeds looking rather sad and looking old beyond her years. How refreshing to see her as a young woman. I had lunch recently with Larry and his lovely wife Julia, (who was a great proponent of Julia Margaret Cameron and Dimbola Lodge) and at this lunch we got onto the subject of the bronze maquette which has been tucked away in the Council’s vaults for some years now. I told Larry that I would endeavour to get it resurrected and back out on show. Especially as it got the seal of approval from Prince Andrew and Prince Phillip when I arranged for it to be sneaked in and used as the centre piece of their dining table at a private Cowes week dinner!! With this in mind I have now located it with the help of the heritage officer and I have been talking to Visit Isle of Wight at the Guildhall to see if it might be displayed there. Alternatively I feel that it could be a welcome addition as a loan to the museum in Carisbrooke Castle. As an aside, as I saw that Norris Castle is up for sale for £1m and it brought to mind the fact that, at around the age that she would have been in this sculpture (probably around 1837 when she was around 18 years of age), Victoria reputedly declined the opportunity of buying Norris on the grounds that it was too expensive and bought the original manor house where Osborne now stands. It seems ironical that Norris Castle and it’s grounds are now on the market for the same price as a Cowes seafront 4 bedroom home!! 14

Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support The ‘C’ word is the word no one wants to hear and if it doesn’t affect you directly then it may become part of your life through a family member or friend who is going through it as 1 in 9 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer and 1 in 2 men with other cancers in their lifetime. The word Cancer sends shivers down most spines. Such is its intimidating nature, even with the advances medical science has made in successfully dealing with it; it still retains the fear factor. So having people around who are empathic and able to offer real support can be critical. Usually it is one’s partner and family who provide this; however they too may need support and consideration, which can so easily be overlooked Every person deals with it in a different way but it is important to know that there is support and help out there. Back in 2011 the Isle of Wight Prostate and Urology Cancer Support group, an Island based group was started by fellow travellers to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham for radiotherapy treatment.

Resin Stone Driveways Beautiful Surface Overlays - for your driveway What is a Resin Stone Overlay?

BEFOR

E

Resin Stone Overlaying is effectively surfacing over your existing block-paved, tarmac or concrete driveway, path or patio. Resin Overlays provide a highly cost-effective and quick way of replacing the surface in the Garden or on the Driveway. As well as being aesthetically pleasing and highly durable, the benefits include: Being both solvent and odour free, during and after application - Restricting growth of weeds - Eliminating loose stones Being environmentally friendly - Compliance with Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).

How is it done?

We initially prepare the existing surface using a high-pressure jet washer system and primer, before applying your chosen resin stone combination. The overlays typically take 1-2 days with minimal inconvenience.

Finishing

We also offer a range of natural or blended stone and surrounding landscaping options including moon stone to truly personalise your resin installation.
