We welcome you to come along to a no obligation meeting, to find out more. A warm and friendly welcome is guaranteed. If you would like to talk to someone before coming along, please ring 01983 759350 and we can chat and even meet with you before you come to a guild. We meet monthly and have nine Townswomen’s Guilds at various locations and times across the island
Newport - Parish Centre, Town Lane, 2nd Monday at 2.00pm
Sandown - Broadway Centre, 3rd Wednesday at 2.00pm
Bembridge - Methodist Church Hall, 1st Tuesday at 7.30pm
So, what else do we do, well ‘Lunchers club’ is a regular at all the guilds, we generally go somewhere different on a monthly basis. Some guilds have walking clubs which involve stopping for coffee, cake and sometimes lunch. Book reading, crafts, flower arranging, gardening, theatre/cinema clubs and we’ve even been known to go on a holiday or two. We regularly have garden parties, coffee mornings and ploughman’s lunches. In fact, a lot of our activities involve some sort of eating or drinking tea!!
Walking through those doors was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, there is no age restriction and everybody is welcome. You can find details of the Guild in your area on the above advert, and you can also call us to chat and even meet with you before you come to your first Guild. As I said at the beginning of this article, the hardest part was walking through the door and if you don’t feel confident to do it alone, I will walk with you.
Then TG could well be for you and is a great opportunity to meet new friends and like-minded ladies in your area.
Are you new to the Island, recently retired or just interested in fun, laughter, lunches, walking, outings or something different?
The Townswomen’s Guild have made it their mission to reduce loneliness by encouraging women who feel isolated and lonely to get involved with their local guild. By becoming a member, you will discover the true gift of friendship and that being around like-minded individuals will help to combat feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Freshwater - Methodist Church Hall, 1st Wednesday at 2.00pm
Ventnor - St Catherine’s Church, 3rd Wednesday at 2.15pm
Lake - Lions Community Centre, 2nd Thursday at 10.30am
The First Step is the Hardest By Suzie Thurgood Why join TG? Well, I can’t answer for you, but I can tell you why I joined... I had recently retired and moved to the Island and didn’t know a soul. I saw an advert for Townswomen’s Guild and thought I would give it a try. The hardest thing was to walk through the door, but I really had no need to worry as I was immediately approached and introduced to others and the rest is, as they say, history.
Sandown - Broadway Centre, 2nd Tuesday at 7.00pm
There are currently nine guilds on the Island and each one holds a monthly meeting which normally includes a speaker giving us insights into various activities on the island, for example we have had the head gardener from Osborne House and more recently a talk on Film and TV made on the Island. We are a non-religious and non-political guild and are open to like-minded ladies who want to meet new people, have fun, and make new friends.
Shanklin - Falcon Cross Hall, 3rd Wednesday at 10.30am

I honestly do not know where this year has gone! If you are a regular reader of this community publication you may remember that the last few years, the September issue front cover has always been dedicated to anything tractor themed. This is partly because I have always had a love of tractors and secondly September is harvesting season and we are never far from a tractor, ploughed field, farmland or to the frustration of many but to my delight stuck behind one in traffic. I will be showing my age here, but I remember years ago when I was growing up, I looked forward to helping load the bales on to the trailer which in those times were just held on with a bit of rope and then sitting on the top bouncing about as we went along the road. Back then, health and safety wasn’t an issue and at times there could be a few of us on the top of the stack and if any of the bales did fall on the road, then we just stopped and picked them up. In those days everything was just a bit more laid back. There wouldn’t have been moaning, honking of horns or even road rage when this happened, just acceptance that your journey may be delayed by a few minutes. Imagine how this would be greeted on Coppins Bridge now!!
In this issue you will find all the regular news reports, puzzles, dates for your diary, features and much more.

Isle of Wight u3a has been going in its present form for just three years. In that time two sisters – Carol Bradshaw and Sally Forster – and a small committee have established a membership of nearly 200. The aim of u3a is to provide opportunities to people no longer in full-time employment, at a time when they can enjoy learning for its own sake. There are over 400,000 UK Carol, members.chair of u3a Wight, says it’s the members who generate the range of opportunities on offer – from playing mah-jong to visiting gardens, going on beach walks, lunches or improving Spanish.
u3a used to be shorthand for University of the Third Age. Nowadays, as it celebrates its 40th anniversary, the acronym is enough to be instantly recognisable. To mark the anniversary u3a Wight is holding a series of events in September to which non-members are invited.

As I write this report, it’s been announced that inflation has topped 10 per cent. A week ago, typical household energy bills were projected to exceed £4,000 a year from January 2023.
There is a local housing crisis, so new developments that provide homes that are affordable to Islanders both to rent and to buy are essential. But that doesn’t mean our area should take an excessive number with massive impact on the local environment and I’veinfrastructure.continued to press for a lower housing figure and for the boundary of allowed development to be drawn further away from Parkhurst Forest. I’ve also pushed for a ‘masterplan’ approach that covers the four sites in the plan – Camp Hill prison and other Ministry of Justice land, Noke Common, Acorn Farm, and the former library HQ.
As I’ve reported before, the northern part of Parkhurst & Hunnyhill ward could face massive development. The draft last year proposed 1,440 new houses. After public consultation, a revised plan brought that down to 1,025.
In early September, we will have a new prime minister. Many households face destitution if their government fails to grasp the magnitude of the cost-of-living crisis and act accordingly. The Isle of Wight Council will do what it can to help. But its budget is limited and is, itself, facing immense strain from general inflation, and from the rise in energy costs for its buildings and facilities. Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council will also be considering what it can to do to help those most in need of support.
I recently pressed Southern Water and Dynorod to reinstate the road surface at Hampshire Crescent. Although the leak was fixed, a rough surface had been left for many Waterweeks. is leaking again in Worsley Road. I’ve raised this with Southern Water and Island Roads. Last year, after digging holes, Southern Water said they couldn’t find a leak from their network. It may be that Island Roads will have to dig up the road to find the source of the leak.
One way the council already helps those of working age on lower incomes is with the local council tax support scheme. The level of support for next year is being consulted on till 28 September with an online survey at IslandconsiderOnOtherServices/Tour-of-Britain/EventwebsiteForestRoad,ItpassingracetheManyquestionnaire.GB7PBLRhttps://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/orcall823950foracopyofthelocalresidentsarelookingforwardtofinalstageoftheTourofBritaincycleonSunday,11September,withtheroutethroughParkhurst&Hunnyhillward.willmeansomerestrictionsonCowesHorsebridgeHill,ParkhurstRoadandRoad.Moredetailsareonthecouncil’sat:www.iow.gov.uk/Council/21September,IsleofWightCouncilwillfinalrecommendationsforthedraftPlanningStrategy.

September was originally the seventh month of the ancient Roman calendar, and as such it was named Septem, which translates into “the seventh month”. It wasn’t until 451 BC that the months of January and February were added to the calendar, making September the ninth Septembermonth.heralds the beginning of Autumn in the northern hemisphere, with it officially commencing on the September equinox, which this year will be at 02:03 on Friday 23rd SeptemberSeptember. 1, 1939, was a dark day for the world. September 11, 2001, changed the shape of the world forever. It was on this fateful day that the worst terrorist attack on US soil happened when four commercial airliners were hijacked. September only has one birthstone though, but with a stone like this, who needs another? The stone is the majestically vivid sapphire. With its deep blue tones, this precious stone is said to represent the wisdom of the gods, purity, and trust. Sapphires were once worn to protect the wearer from both poisoning and other evils.

Elsewhere, Pritchett’s Pond - thanks to Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council - now has a brilliant information board installed that details a brief history of the pond and what makes it a hidden gem of Newport & Carisbrooke. The board was revealed by myself at a very informative public information session run by NCCC and local herpetologist, Mark Earp. The session also had members of the Pritchett family in attendance. TheHello,Tour of Britain will be almost upon us (11th September) and as many of you already know, some of the world’s most elite athletes will be whizzing through Gunville Road and down Carisbrooke High Street to continue their race around the Island. Once the cyclists have passed and you’ve refuelled, anyone that wants to see more of the action can head into Newport centre where there’ll be a big screen in St James Square broadcasting the rest of the race. Calling all animal lovers…. Your help is urgently needed. The Cinnamon Trust is national charity and a much-needed source here on the island. Their objective is to respect and preserve the treasured relationship between owners and their pets. They work in partnership with people over retirements age and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness to offer all kinds of free pet care.
If you would like to have a more in-depth chat about becoming a volunteer, please call them during office hours (Monday-Friday 9am5pm) on 01736 758 701, or you can find more information on their website. Charity No: 1134680.
Many elderly or ill pet owners worry about their ability to provide appropriate care for their loved pets and rather than them having to rehome what could be their only companion, The Cinnamon Trust with the help of their amazing volunteers can step in and provide the help that is needed, such as walking the dog for a housebound owner, cleaning bird cages and litter trays and even foster pets while owners need hospital or hospice care. The Cinnamon Trust are looking for volunteers to help island pet owners. They cover the whole island and therefore need volunteers from all areas. They currently have pet owners in Newport and Cowes who are in need of immediate help and support for their beloved dogs who love a good walk. By volunteering you will be supporting the dogs by providing regular exercise to keep them in tip top condition and you will also be taking away a worry from the owner who will no doubt have enough on their plate
