Welcome to the April issue of ‘your local community magazine’. Our aim each month is to bring you the latest news and information for your area along with interesting articles and features. We have some great local businesses offering a variety of services and products, there is hopefully something for everyone. Like many others, I am extremely proud to live here, and it is amazing watching our communities pull together as one when another part of the world has been torn apart by war. The Isle of Wight, stepped up to the mark and rallied together donating items to be taken to the border of war-torn Ukraine and going one step further by opening their homes and offering shelter. When we all work together so much more can be achieved. Whilst writing this the weather outside is not feeling very Spring like, in fact it’s quite wet and cold. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the sunshine is on its way, that over the Easter period we will be able to soak up some vitamin D, enjoy some picnics, and dare I say it get the BBQ out ready for the season! There are events happening in both the local area and across the island and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 8 and 9 has a variety of events listed. If you have an event happening in May, please be sure to email the information so we can include it in the next issue. I hope you all have a great Easter, whether it’s the time off or the chocolate you are most looking forward to. I hope it’s a great one and I look forward to catching up with you again next month.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net As a long-standing member of the Royal British Legion, I was very pleased to be present at a recent meeting of the Isle of Wight Council Cabinet where they reaffirmed the council’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant. The covenant is a commitment to stand with those who have served and is important to ensure that veterans on the island get the extra support they need. Similarly, I am currently attempting to reactivate the Wootton Bridge Branch of the RBL. This has lain dormant for many years but could provide much needed help for veterans in this village and beyond. Please get in contact if you can help me with this project. We only need a few of us to make it a success. On a less positive note, I must advise that Party in the Park will not be returning this year. This is down to a lack of volunteers for marshalling duties on the day. Thank you to those that offered to help but sadly there weren’t enough of you to keep the event safe. I will work with the Parish Council to see if next year is possible. The government are giving out one off grants (not loans) of £150 to help with energy costs to properties falling in council tax bands A to D plus a few other applicable properties. In order to receive this, you must either be registered for direct debit for your council tax or fill in a form available through the IW Council website to give them your bank details. If they don’t have your details, they cannot pay you! If you need help in claiming this, please get in touch. I have recently been to visit Care in the 4

Garden on Park Road. This excellent charity supports the disabled and also has an environmental mission too. I went because they were worried about the planned closure of Park Road for works due to start shortly after I submit this article. This is their busiest time of year and the lack of passing trade could seriously impact them. We are working on a solution to that but in the meantime, I suggest to everyone who loves their garden that Care in the Garden is worth a visit. Wootton Bridge Parish Council are planning to install a bench within the village to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. More information about this event will come out later but the bench has been ordered. In a sensible move the plan is to replace a bench that was already earmarked by the Parish Council as requiring replacement due to dilapidation. There is an Extraordinary Meeting of the Full IW Council scheduled for 20th April. This is to sign off on the final round of public consultation regarding the Draft Island Planning Strategy (DIPS). This consultation will run for six weeks and is the last phase prior to submitting the DIPS to the government for approval. The DIPS is important as it aims to deliver more affordable housing while protecting our countryside at the same time. The Wootton Bridge Spring Tidy Up will be held Saturday 30th April from 10am to 1pm. The starting point is the Parish Council office on Brannon Way next to the car park. Tools provided on the day!

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk Spring looks like it has arrived and good things are happening on our seafront. As Ryde Town Council take on the ownership of the harbour, you may see a new harbour office appearing shortly. The existing harbour office has served its useful life and part of the investment taking place will see the office upgraded and smartened up, alongside the container storage unit, and Wi-Fi installed across the harbour area and in the new office building. Plans to upgrade the pontoons this year gather pace and with that should come electric and water supplies installed to the new pontoons. More investment from income is planned but these are the immediate improvements we should see shortly. The flag poles are also being replaced in a joint venture with the Isle of Wight Council and we should be seeing bright new flags attached once replaced. In a more recent development, Ryde Town Council have agreed to fund flag and banner brackets to all the lampposts around the harbour wall and down the Esplanade to Appley. The intention this year, at least, is to populate the lamp post brackets with large banners of art works created to show images of the many iconic buildings in Ryde. There could be 25 – 30 such banners and I am certain these will bring colour and vibrancy to our Esplanade seafront not only during this summer but for many years to come. The brackets will of course allow for future banners and flags to be created by local artists and community groups and displayed all along the seafront. There are many events planned for Ryde over the coming months, parades, carnivals,

shows, events and I am delighted to hear that there will be a return of the Ryde slide in Union Street this year. A big event for Ryde, however, is coming to the Island in September and it is the Tour of Britain event which will start in Ryde on the weekend of the 3rd and 4th September from the Esplanade and head out of Ryde eventually ending in Freshwater and the Needles landmark. It’s a big event with logistical challenges for the Council and organisers but it is a worldwide broadcast event and will be a great showcase not only for Ryde but for the Island generally as cameras and coverage from helicopter cameras will highlight our beautiful Island community. Expect lots of visitors to the event, especially in Ryde where the teams will set up camp for the weekend bringing a vibrant and badly needed economic boost to our economy. Finally, time is running out to apply for road closures if any residents are planning for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations. By the time you are reading this, Information packs will be out with Town & Parish Councils and final arrangements being put into place to enable the celebrations to take place. Do contact your local Town or Parish Council, or email info@islandroads.com if you need further information or want to apply for a road closure for your own area or street. For those who remember the last Queen’s jubilee, the weather was very kind to us, and we do hope we have a repeat of fine weather and some joy and hope for a better and brighter future. Indeed, lets hope for a brighter year entirely!

Out with the old… With Spring now upon us the weather should start getting warmer and it’s time to start thinking about spring cleaning and decluttering. I’m by no means a fanatic but I do like this time of year when I can have a good clear out and a good purge. A tidy house is a tidy mind… or so they say.

Mobile Hairdresser and Makeup Artist 07773 149431 www.janemott.co.uk Salon services brought to you at home.

Experienced stylist, cutter & colourist specialising in I like changing over my winter clothes for highlights for grey blending, balayage and root melts. some spring/summer outfits. The main point to remember is when packing away the winter Wedding and Special Occasions. clothes if you haven’t worn it this season then Makeup to Look Younger Masterclass put it in the donate pile, there is no point in keeping it and when lovingly unfolding the spring outfits, if it doesn’t feel like catching up with an old friend again it’s got to go and if you are hanging on to an item in the hope that you will lose weight let me give you one piece of advice… get rid of it… you’re never going to lose that weight. It’s harsh but fair!! Remember to keep a couple of jumpers and cardigans out as some days and evenings are still a bit chilly. Sorting out the wardrobe and shoes is no simple task and will probably take twice as long as you expect it to take but it will be worth it. The next area I work on is the kitchen cupboards, again you must be harsh but fair here. I’ve lost count of the number of times I have to remove the contents of a cupboard just to get to the pile of mixing bowls at the back. Get everything out on the counter and make a decision. Do you need it? Have you used it recently? Would your life fall apart if it was gone? For instance, how many frying pans, saucepans, baking trays and mixing bowls do you really need. Have you got utensils at the back of the cupboard you have never used? Once the clutter is gone you will feel much better… although you might regret it for a day or two, but life goes on. I love sorting the food cupboard and stacking the tins and cartons in order, so I know what I have of everything at a quick glance. I bet you could easily live off the contents of your pantry for a few weeks. If you are anything like me, every time you do a supermarket shop you buy a tin of tomatoes, baked beans, soup, pasta sauce and other staples that just get added to the cupboard. The next time you go shopping you will know exactly what you have and haven’t got. Although it seems boring, decluttering is very therapeutic. Don’t just stop at these, you probably have the contents of an airing cupboard or underbed storage that could do with some TLC and don’t get me started on the shed and garage. Remember it doesn’t all have to be done in a day or weekend. Do one job at a time and feel good for doing it. Happy decluttering and remember to sell, give away, donate, upcycle, or throw away.

News Report from Cllr. Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield & Mayor of Ryde. 07769 551 578 | Michael.lilley@iow.gov.uk www.michaellilley.uk Forward Ryde – Investing in the future of the Town - The recent news that the old Packs building on Cross Street and top of Union Street has received investment of £2 Million plus from the Arts Council to convert to an arts centre/venue, is fantastic. It is the latest in a range of initiatives and projects inspired/supported by Ryde Town Council and local residents/organisations. Investment and Jobs - My calculation is since 2019, Ryde has seen and is seeing outside investment of over £15Million plus coming into the Town. This investment and transformation will give the private sector confidence to invest in the Town as well. We are already seeing new shops, businesses, expansion of existing businesses and community enterprises such as Shademakers (Packs building), Pickle & Dill and Monkton Arts Centre and Café. This all creates an atmosphere of enthusiasm, creativity, hope, and opportunity. Ryde Town Council has started to borrow at low interest rates to invest in the Town such as Ryde Harbour. This in turn enables match funding to come in from other sources. This investment is creating new facilities and jobs. During Covid, RTC launched a KickStart young person’s employment scheme with Government funding which has created 20 plus jobs for local young people. A good example was a young man who has been trained by Grace’s Bakery and now has a full-time job. Banners, Ryde Marina and Joyful Walk along the Esplanade - From 1st April, RTC will take over the ownership and management of Ryde Harbour (renaming it Ryde Marina) and Eastern Gardens. In 2021, RTC invested in and established 12

a beach operation and put beach equipment including deck chairs back on Ryde beaches. In 2022, there is investment into the Ryde Marina, so it develops and grows. This is an amazing achievement when you go back to 2018 and Ryde TC objected to IW Council plans to sell the harbour to a dredging company. It demonstrates how RTC has moved from a minor player to the unitary authority, IW Council, to not only an equal partner but a lead player. RTC is more and more in the driving seat and leading the way in Ryde. New banners designed by local artists will provide colour on your walks on the esplanade and with the Appley sinkhole repaired a walk along the esplanade this summer will be a joy. Events – New and Old - Ryde has a history of events from April to October and sadly these events were reduced greatly, and many cancelled over last two years due to Covid19 but 2022 will see not only the established events coming back bigger and better, but new events such as the start of the final leg of the biggest cycling event in UK, the Tour de Britain. The Mardi Gras, Ryde Carnival, IW Pride, Classic Cars, Scooter Rally, Rowing Regatta, IW Harp Festival and much more will not only bring joy but visitors/tourists pouring money into the Ryde economy. Finally, there is a Town Annual Meeting and a two-day Forward Ryde event on the 13/14th May 2022 in the Town centre where there will be presentations and exhibitions celebrating and showcasing all projects, innovations, and developments in the Town (details to be shortly publicised). I do love Ryde.

April Facts and Historical Events. We know it is the fourth month of the year, but that’s only by the Gregorian calendar that we adhere to now. It was previously the fifth month in the earlier Julian calendar. April also only had 29 days, but a 30th day was added when Julius Caesar established the Julian calendar. The etymology behind the word “April” comes from the verb “aperire,” which means “to open.” It’s commonly believed that the word refers to the season of trees and flowers begin to “open” or bloom. Those who were born in April have a diamond as their birthstone, which represents innocence. Their birth flower is either a Daisy or a Sweet Pea. There are two zodiac signs in April. Aries, which is until April 19th, and Taurus, which is April 20th and onwards. April is a great month for meteor showers. One of which is the Lyrids meteor shower, which appears from April 16th to April 26th each year. There are quite a few notable historical people born in April, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Shakespeare, and Queen Elizabeth II. On April 14, 1912, the famous Titanic ship hit an iceberg and sunk on her first and only voyage. George Washington was inaugurated as the First President of the United States on April 30, 1789. Of course, one of the most well-known dates of April, is April Fools’ Day on the 1st of the month. No one is sure where this originated from, but some believe it to be inspired by Geoffrey Chaucer’s story in “Canterbury Tales” called “Nun’s Priest’s Tale.” On April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 was launched and ran into difficulties about two days later. It was then that the famous line “Houston, we’ve had a problem here” was said, and is today usually misquoted. After a 1,500 year break, the first Olympics of the modern era took place on April 6, 1896, in Athens. The explosion of the Chernobyl nuclear plant in Ukraine occurred on April 26, 1986, which forced everyone within a 300-mile radius to be evacuated. And of course, as we all know, “April showers bring May flowers,” so if the rain of April ever gets you down, never forget the silver lining! Source: thefactsite.com
