TheHighStreetActionZone(HAZ) continuestotrytodeliveranimproved towncentreexperienceforresidentsand visitorstoRydeandIwasverypleasedto hearthefirstoftheshopfrontgrantshave beenapprovedforpropertyownersand theplanningapplicationsneededhave beensoughtandapprovedbytheIWC planningdepartment.Iamadvisedthat thereareanumberofothershopfronts goingthroughthesystemanddueto cometoPlanninginthenearfuture. Thesegrantsarepartfundedfor improvementtothefrontageandstreet sceneoftheHighStreetandwhilstnot everyshopwillseeanimprovedfrontage, Iamincrediblypleasedthatwehave managedtostartdeliveringonthispartof theHAZschemeforRyde.
Anotherinterestingdevelopmentis comingthroughtheSouthernWater PathfinderschemeontheIslandwhichis workingtoreducelongertermrainfall from‘roofandroad’evacuationinto enteringtheoveralldrainagenetworkand therebyslowingupthesurgesand capacityissuesthatheavyprecipitation canbring.Recentdiscussionswith SouthernWater,whoarepreparedto investintothecostsofsuchschemes,have indicatedthatwecouldbringforward someinterestingadditionstotheHigh Streetprojectthroughsustainable drainageschemessuchas,simply,open gardenspacesandtreesbeingplanted. It’sinterestingtothinkthatlayingout areasofcurrentlyhardsurfacessothat rainwatercansoakaway,insteadof flowingintothedrainagenetwork,can havesuchanimpactbothintermsof sustainabilitybutalsointermsof softeningtheenvironmentwithcareful plantingandadditionalflowering/shrubs areas.Wearecurrentlyworkingtowards designingaschemethatcanbe incorporatedintotheprojectandbe deliveredwithinthenext12monthsorso.
Iampleasedtosaythatwe haverecentlybidfora grantfundingtoaddto andimprove‘ActiveTravel’projectsin Rydeandforwhichweawaittheoutcome shortly.Thiscouldbeadditionalmoney intothepotfortheHighStreetscheme andaverywelcomeuplifttohelpdeliver moreofthepedestrianisationthatisbadly neededtomaketheHighStreetasafer experienceforallconcerned.
Icontinuetoworkonthecomplicated issueofpreventingvehiclesfromentering theHighStreetandmindfulthatwemust notpreventbusinessesfromoperating efficientlyandtherearerightsofway problemstoovercome.Andfinally,on theHAZ,wearelookingatthesurface finishesfortheHighStreetwhicharethe nextimportantparttodeliverinthe comingyear.Therearemanyoptions fromblockstopavingslabs,potentiallya permeablesurfaceandmakingcertainwe canprovideasmuchsurfacingasthe budgetallows.Thismaymeanapartial surfacingoftheHighStreetbetween GarfieldRoadandStarStreetandwith aspirationstoapplyforfurthergrant fundingtomakethesurfacingacomplete HighStreetproject.Makingendsmeetis indeedtheplan!
Finally,atarecentmeetingwiththe PoliceandCrimeCommissionerinRyde Iwaspleasedtolearnfromherdirectly thattherearetentativeplanstore-open thePoliceStationinRydeonaparttime basis,atleast,whichwouldbeawelcome developmentIamcertain.Evenafew daysaweekopeningwouldprovidean improvedservicetoresidentsandsome comforttothoseneedingaccesstothe Policelocally.
