Imagine being in the situation where you go from being fit and healthy leading a happy life without a care in the world to being told you have a brain tumour… Well this is what happened to Mark Grimes and everyday this is happening to children and adults across the world, the UK and on the Island. In a matter of moments your whole world can be turned upside down and vigorously shaken. The positive to this story is that Mark has survived and a year since being given the devastating news and undergoing brain surgery he has now returned to full duties at work as a fire fighter. Unfortunately this is not always the case for everyone… Mark and his wife Kathryn have taken this tragedy and learnt that this could happen to anyone, the tumour wasn’t hereditary and is not curable but it is controllable and through their journey they have realised that they were alone most of the time, there was only the minimum of help and support from others here on the Island and this is where The Wight Brainy Bunch originated. The aim of The Wight Brainy Bunch is to support and raise funds for Brain Tumour Charities and Smile4Wessex for intensive research purposes and for ongoing support to all patients. More closer to home they have set up a support group which is not just for the patient, but also for family and friends as they all need help and support for the changes that are taking place in their lives. The support group is held on the last Tuesday of the month at Wessex Cancer Trust, Lugley Street, Newport from 6pm -7pm but most times it runs over as new friendships are made and built upon. Anyone going through any brain trauma/injury is welcome to go along. You will be able to meet with other people who are going through or have been through the same and they may be able to offer advice and support so nobody need ever feel alone. The Wight Brainy Bunch has been holding fund raising events and in June they had their Mad Hatters Tea Party which raised a further £654 and so far in total they have raised £15,032. They hope to continue to raise much more than this and through their ongoing dedication they will be able to support many more Island families coping with this devastating disease. In an ideal world enough money could be raised so that facilities were available here on the Island to cut down on the stress of having to travel to the mainland for consultations and appointments. Their next big event is the Blue Light and Black Tie Charity Ball which is being held on Saturday 3rd September at Ryde Castle. Tickets are £35 and include a 2 course menu and you can book your tickets at www.thewightbrainybunch.org.uk/product/blue-light-black-tie-charity-ball-tickets or by calling 07850 255984. Please support this charity as much as you can as you never know who might be next to be affected by this disease as I bet you didn’t know that 16,000 people each year are diagnosed with a brain tumour and more children and adults under 40 die of a brain tumour than any other form of cancer. Before I met Mark and Kathryn I had no idea about these statistics and meeting them has opened my eyes and now I know why they are so passionate about The Wight Brainy Bunch and helping other families. 4

News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley – Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com or call/text 07769551578 The last 4 weeks have brought great change in weather, economy and politics. The words “it is a changing world” do come to mind. Change can be frightening but change can bring a new sense of hope. July is my birthday month and I am now 59 and counting down for next year’s big 60. I have children and grandchildren and keen to focus on how I in my simple way can work alongside my fellow residents of Ryde in ensuring it has an economic and social sustainable future and for the generations that follow me. This month’s report focuses on how local people are working together to make this vision of hope actually happen by finding solutions ourselves locally.

Roads – Speed, non-resident parking and poor road conditions Through my surgeries and local newsletters, I am getting contacted by residents in Ryde East about the state of the roads, parking by non-residents and the speed of some drivers on a daily basis. Ryde East has three roads Great Preston, Marlborough and High Park Roads which have seen a real rise in traffic and becoming at times really unsafe. I am planning a meeting on 4th August at my monthly surgery for all residents at St John’s Church Hall concerned with this issue and will keep you posted on the outcome. Local volunteers have come forward to establish a local Speed Watch scheme as a start. www.hampshire.police.uk/internet/ advice-and-information/crime-prevention/ community-speedwatch Dog fouling and irresponsible dog owners I am concerned with local residents in the rise of dog fouling on our streets and I am raising this issue as a key action as a local councillor

News Report from Cllr Ian Stephens - Ryde West - Lantern Cottage, The Orchard, Pellhurst Road, Ryde, Email:- ian.stephens@iow.gov.uk Mobile:-07970 009523 Pact for European Islands - I was invited and attended the first SMART Islands project and gave a brief presentation on the PTEC tidal energy scheme, also the investment into Solar energy at Hampstead and the hydrogen powered catamarans which are manufactured at Ventnor on the isle of Wight. The SMART Islands project is designed to pull the Islands of Europe into a collective which will exchange concerns and bring together good practice for Island communities. A great deal of interest was displayed in our ongoing research into a Smart Grid connection.
The Play areas around the Ryde area are being checked and upgraded through help from Ryde Town Council. Hopefully all will be ready prior to the summer holidays, allowing the children ample opportunity to enjoy themselves. Summer is here with Ryde in Bloom entrants being judged, Vernon Square was recently brought alive with music on a Sunday afternoon, Ryde Art festival and the commencement of the painting of various colours of beach hut. How wonderful Ryde is!! The blot on the landscape being cars left outside of houses for months on end, with little or no consideration for the resident. If you are plagued with this “abandoned” car then you may wish to contact Island Roads... I believe this is a BIG problem in areas around Ryde. Why not contact your local Councillor?
Time was also spent in drawing together a draft agreement for working together as we have under the former SMILEGOV banner. This is due to be finalised then ratified in Brussels in December, however since the BREXIT result the participation of the Isle of Wight is uncertain. The vote to come out of Enjoy the Summer days of Ryde the European Union was quite emphatic on the Isle of Wight, however with little promise Kind regards of funding direct to the Island my thoughts were on funding for Islands and campaigning Ian with others in a similar situation could have given us more weight. Still BREXIT it is! My meeting with the National Farmers Union on the Island was very successful and allowed me to get a better understanding of the problems facing our farming community. A number of items were on the agenda which included diversified activities of which 56% of farms partake. Diversification (such as holiday rentals, farm shops etc.) is to boost the finances of farmers and within England generates an income of £440m approx. 10

PAD Public Access Defibrillators could be the difference between life and death in the event of a SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest). The Island is part of the international scheme to obtain as many defibrillators as possible in public places.
At present there are approximately 90 of them across the Island with some having limited access (business hours) whilst others have 24 hour access. You can find details of the location of all these life saving devices by going to www.heartsafe.org.uk/AED-locations. In the event of a suspected SCA (Sudden Cardiac Arrest) the observer and those present must report immediately the incident by ringing the Emergency Services 999. Instructions will be given by the Operator how to assist in the incident. Persons may be trained in basic life support (BSL) and understand the Chain of Survival. The Emergency Services will advise the caller who reports the incident how to assist.

When life gives you lemons make lemonade For a lovely refreshing summer drink, homemade lemonade ticks all the boxes. There are plenty of recipes out there from the deluxe to the basic. I like to think this one is midway. You won’t be tied to the kitchen spending hours making it but it definitely tastes better than dish water. Take about 6 lemons (unwaxed preferably) and peel some strips of rind from a couple of them and put aside for decoration later. Give the lemons a good roll over the worktop to get the juices flowing and then cut in half and squeeze all that lovely juice out into a big jug (make sure to remove all the pips). Add 150g of caster sugar and stir. Then add two mugs of boiling water into the lemon juice and sugar mix and stir until all the sugar has dissolved. Next top up with 600ml of cold water and mix everything together. Put in the strips of peel for garnish and put in the fridge to completely cool. Serve with ice and lemon slices
