News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde. Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide I hope to see the much needed double yellow lines painted on the East side of East Hill Road soon as no objections were received during the consultation period.

and has thankfully taken up the cause, he has already met with the new owners “AEW” and has now booked a meeting that a few group members can attend.

There was historically only a few Days a year when cars parked on both sides of East Hill Road during Ryde Carnival but over the last 6 years parents have started parking on the East Side to drop off and collect their children from St Mary’s School making the Highway extremely dangerous. The take up and increase of this type of dangerous parking was surprisingly infectious as it got into a sort of “if they can do it so can I” situation.

The Isle of Wight Council had the property surveyed by Savills who put a value of £750,000 on it, a stark contrast to the £3,500,000 AEW are currently marketing it for. The sooner they realise their ambitions are unachievable the better.

I’ve been enquiring for years why the “Isle of Wight” was no longer included in the list of stops on the overhead indicator boards at Waterloo Station, bringing this up at the Tourism advisory board meetings as an attempt to get it reinstated. I was pleased to hear that our new Rail franchisee is going to try and make this happen.

Writing this I’m also busy preparing for this years RydeSlide event on the 16th, it will be a bigger event this year spreading onto the Esplanade and Eastern Gardens. Let’s hope we’ve had a sunny successful event by the time you read this article. I am working with Cllr Ian Ward Cabinet member for parking to make Ryde North East a primary candidate for limited time and permit parking around our residential areas. Commuter parking is a major problem in our ward that we have waited many years to fix, Ian is putting together a Council Policy that will be able to address this issue and enable new time limited and Permit Zones to be rolled out where local Residents agree by consensus and request them.

I am now lobbying our New MP to approach the department of Transport to request including “Isle of Wight” in traffic signs from the M25 the same as “Cross Channel Ferries” signs are displayed around the South Eastern section. You wouldn’t need to say “Cross Solent Ferries” a simple “Isle of Wight” would We have recently had some lovely warm sunny weather let’s hope it continues into August do. like last year so our children can enjoy their Summer holidays and our local businesses If its not possible on the main route signs, can flourish as I’m sure our recent bout of some brown places of interest signs would elections haven’t done the economy any suffice. favours. I’m pleased to say our New MP Bob Seely attended a Ryde Arena action Group meeting Best regards Wayne

Local Photographers Choosing the front cover each month is made so much easier by having wonderful local photographers who are always happy for me to use their photographs and this month is no exception as I have come across the work of photographer Tara Harvey.

NEWCHURCH MALE VOICE CHOIR Golden Anniversary Concert

The only problem I had was deciding which of her photos to use as they were all amazing but Celebrating 50 years of Singing there was just something about the ‘poppy’ Wednesday 16th August 2017 that caught my eye and in an instant I knew at 7pm this was the one for August. Medina Theatre, Newport Guest Appearances Tara was born on the Island but moved to First Act 2011 - Theatre Group London 20 years ago to further her career in Harley Mackness - Soprano the fashion industry. The stress and city life Nancy Filby-Borrett - Violinish was no match for the laidback Isle of Wight accompanied by Wendy A’Bear and after a few years Tara decided to move Tickets Adults £6. So far Tara had not shown Box Office 01983 823884 or a real passion for photography and was quite www.medinatheatre.co.uk The Newchurch Male Voice Choir raise funds for Charities happy to continue taking photos with her across the Island. compact camera but that all changed when her friend lent her a DSLR camera and Tara took some photos of the red arrows over the Solent. She was then hooked and went and brought her own camera and so her photography journey began... Tara works full time in Newport and in her spare time she does wedding dress alterations but always ensures she finds time to get out and about to different locations across the Island with her camera. Tara doesn’t have a particular style but does prefer wildlife and landscapes and she also enjoys the editing side which allows her to turn really good images into fantastic photos.

A big thank you to Tara for allowing Island Magazines to use her photo and I am sure we will be featuring more of her work in the future. 5

News Report from Councillor Charles Chapman for Ryde South Email:- Charles.Chapman@iow.gov.uk | Mobile number 07970 009608 Hello and a big thank you to you and to your editor Debbie, for allowing me the opportunity to speak to you all today. In June I had a write up in the County Press with the headline ‘veteran IW councillor’. Well I suppose I am, but you know the old adage you are only as old as you feel! I have been privileged to represent Ryde South for over 30 years and would like to put in a special thanks to all the young couples who went out to vote for me. They were there with their pushchairs on a cold damp, May day and I remember them, in theirs. If that ages me then so be it.

News Report for Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I am writing this report the weather is absolutely glorious, although too hot to work in or for me to sit in but do not forget to use sun screen and keep your head covered and most important, if you have a baby or young children, do keep them well covered. I know it is not what they want to do but the sun can do some horrible damage to your skin in a very short space of time but do enjoy it as I told my wife when complaining about the heat, I prefer this to wet and cold January any day! One issue that I have received emails about, is on the fixed link debate and it is something that was so emotive during the recent local council election. I only had one person raise it with me asking if I would support the feasibility study. I have no problem supporting it, but with pressure on council budgets, I do not believe that it should be the council paying for the study. Like any major infrastructure project, would we see the promised benefits? There would no doubt be a toll charge and the whole Island population is smaller than Portsmouth or Southampton. I remain to be convinced of the case, let me know your views. I recently met with a member of staff from Island Roads to talk through the problems or offer praise where things have been resolved or improved. By now you will have seen the skid surfaces that have been positioned at the High Street crossings. This will help cars stop quicker and hopefully make people more aware of the crossings. Sadly it will not stop drivers going through red lights. Pavements in St. Edmunds Walk are being 12

re-surfaced and I have passed on suggestions from a St. Edmunds resident to help people with disabilities using the pavements. I hope to have some news shortly on New Road re-surfacing. At the other end of the village I have met with residents of Park Road who are finding it difficult to exit their homes safely because of the speed of traffic and bends in the road, sadly what was once a quiet road is no longer so as more people use the road to by-pass Newport from the Bay Area to go to East Cowes. On the planning front there are applications that are coming forward that residents need to be aware of. Two have already been advertised, both for small housing developments – TCP/21223?A P/00746/17 at Reynards Boarding Kennels, Palmers Road for nine dwellings and TCP/33137 P/00767/17 land on Lushington Hill. Application for nine dwellings. These application can be viewed at the planning office at Seaclose or online on the IOW council website – iwight.com. Do not forget to let the Parish Council know your views, these will then be taken into account when they debate the applications prior to making their comments to the Isle of Wight Council. And to finish, after a few years absence, swallows have again started nesting in the barns on the farm, why they stopped in the first place, I have no idea, but it is great to see them back despite the mess they make. Swifts have also made an appearance but no sign of nesting sadly. Barry Abraham.
