What is an Alzheimer Café? An Alzheimer Café is a meeting place that provides informal education and information about the issues surrounding dementia. Alzheimer Cafés welcome everyone who has an interest in dementia; people with dementia, their families and friends and people in the community, who would like to learn more about dementia. Alzheimer Cafés provide an informal, safe, and sensitive environment for, sharing feelings, giving, and receiving support and guidance, and provides the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar situations. Alzheimer Cafés have a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Each month there is a speaker who presents information on a dementia related subject, sometimes from another service, and welcomes professionals and visitors’ who provide updates and information on their areas of expertise. The Alzheimer Café Team will give you a warm welcome, ‘a listening ear’, provide refreshments and signpost people to other services and agencies, where appropriate, to access information and services. There is no need to book to attend an Alzheimer Café, you are welcome to come along to any of the Cafés across the Island (ACE7 is for people with Young Onset Dementia aged 45-65 years). Welcome to the August issue and there is no denying that summer is here! Whilst writing this we are in the middle of an amber weather warning for the extreme high temperatures the island is experiencing... like many others I am finding it quite unbearable, but it could be worse - we could be in a built-up city, hours away from the beach and ocean.
Multi award winning transformational coach. Rebuild your confidence and achieve more.
I’ve been seeking shelter and enjoying picnics under the trees in many of the parks we have on the Island. Isn’t it amazing what we have on our doorsteps?

This month is set to be a great month on the Island, as after being absent for a couple of years due to the pandemic we can finally say that August is once again Carnival time... Our dates for your diary section on pages 14 and 15 is a handy guide to know what’s on and when, ensuring you don’t miss any of the fun or if carnivals just aren’t your thing, you’ll know which areas to avoid and when!!! This month’s issue is once again packed with news, information, local advertising, puzzles and much more. I need to stop looking at this month’s front cover as the temptation to get up and leave the office in search of a 99 with an extra flake is very strong. I have certainly eaten more than my fair share of ice cream during this hot spell, but I believe that by eating them I am supporting local businesses... well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Please keep using the services of local advertisers who advertise with us, and I hope you all have a lovely August, and, on that note, I am off to get an ice cream! See you again next month.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk A fantastic success story and a great time was had by all over the weekend of the 16th and 17th July for the Pride weekend. Starting with the parade that ran from Queens Road all the way down to Eastern Gardens, thousands turned out to participate and to watch the event. Really good to see the Ryde youth service involved and walking in the parade along with a number of Ryde Town Councillors. Yet again, entertainment for free on our seafront on the Saturday and Sunday and a very positive and happy atmosphere was enjoyed by all. Ryde is lucky to have so many events and carnivals and along with the beach sports and beach soccer tournament is making its mark right across the Island for community spirit and inclusion. A big thank you to HoverTravel who supported the Pride event in many ways and actually put on some late-night crossing on the Saturday night which, I understand, was very well used.
The work to sort out the sand issue on the beaches around the Marina has seen sand removed from the entrance and thousands of cubic metres of sand moved back along the beach towards the Appley area. The beach was losing sand around Appley and the build-up of the sand around the Marina walls was affecting the Marina use. Moving it away serves a dual purpose and offers a better outcome for the town on both counts.
On a less happy note, it is really distressing to see the vandalisation going on to the temporary toilets on Western Gardens. In the first three weeks of opening, they have been seriously damaged on three occasions. This affects those wanting to use the facilities and is costly and time consuming to fix. We are looking at potential cameras for the area in a bid to fight this blight in our community. It would be a real shame if the toilets had to be closed permanently due to the vandals and I do hope the community keeps an eye out to help with the situation.
Finally, the worst kept secret perhaps, but I have met with providers of a Dotto Train, and we are moving forward with plans to introduce one for Ryde as soon as we possibly can. There are a few operational details to resolve but these will be ironed out over the coming weeks and months. It may be later this year or perhaps early next year, but it very much looks like we are going to see the Dotto Train running in Ryde once again.

The plans for the public to see are out for Vectis Hall and for St Thomas’s church which are part of Ryde Town Councils future strategy for the buildings in our Town. These are longer term projects but with architects engaged and working on the plans we are starting to see how the buildings can be brought back into public use and restored and re-invigorated within Ryde. Details of consultations to follow shortly.

News Report from Cllr Vanessa Churchman for Haylands and Swanmore - 01983 866135 07388 669071 | email:- vanessa.churchman@iow.gov.uk GOOD NEWS The Haylands (Ryde URC) Horticultural Show will be back at the Church in Corbett Road on the 17th Sept. This popular event has been sorely missed for the last couple of years so please get your entries in as soon as possible for this event. Unfortunately it is one of the few flower/veg/cake shows left so please support it. Contact: Martin Stock, Show Sec. at martinstock741@gmail.com. GOOD NEWS AGAIN After consistently asking for over 12 years that Smallbrook roundabout be reconfigured it has finally been completed. It eventually reached the top of the ‘road engineering’ schedule because it was an accident black spot and there were more collisions there than anywhere else on the Island. I am sure most people will agree with me that not only is it safer but the design and layout are extremely attractive and, unlike most road schemes, actually improve the look of the area.
SOUTHERN VECTIS I attended the Stakeholder Meeting in Southampton to ensure the continuation of the No.37 bus service round Haylands which I instigated back in 2007. All is well and although everybody has had problems with Bettesworth Road seemingly being consistently dug up I, hope we are now well over that.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net resurfacing of New Road. This is taking a lot of negotiating between numerous parties, but we are still making progress. I have also been checking the condition of other roads to see if there are any defects, the latest being Lushington Hill where several drains and covers had sunk. Being the main A road, it is to be expected that this gets the heaviest use. The truth is that many of these issues rely on being reported by members of the public and As I write this we are sweltering in a local Councillors. Island Roads will fix heatwave. If you are aware of any of your neighbours who may need extra help at this things, but they have to be informed of time that you cannot provide, please let me the problem before they can do remedial work. Their District Steward covers a vast know and I will try and support them. I realise of course that my writing that means area of the northeast of the island so to get something done it is quickest to report it will rain for the rest of the year! it yourself. The pathway around the recreation ground A pressure group called Wootton Against is also well under way as I write this. The Solar (WAS) held a public meeting in weather so far has been perfect for laying the community centre recently. They are the surface so hopefully it will make a campaigning against the proposal for big difference for people. I know that if I a solar farm on Whiterails Road. The were wearing thin shoes I could not walk company behind it also held an event at on the old path, which kind of negated the community centre a couple of months the purpose of having one. I am aware back and attended a recent Parish Council that there is an issue with the proximity meeting. I would be interested to hear of the rugby pitch, but the Isle of Wight Council staff have agreed to come up with a feedback from people to gauge what the community feeling is on this. solution to this problem. I am glad to say that the majority of the roadworks which have blighted the village have now been completed. I realise that they are necessary but that doesn’t make the disruption any easier at the time, although the feedback that I have received from residents regarding the workers has been positive. They seem to have been trying hard to limit the disruption to people who live on those roads, which is nice.
It has been mentioned to me that dirt-bikes and quad bikes are being ridden on the rec in the evenings. If you know anyone who is doing this, please tell them to stop. I will be checking up on this and I will not hesitate to report it to the police if I catch anyone. This kind of activity is not allowed and puts other users in potential danger. 16
I know that the Jubilee was almost two months ago, but the Parish Council still has a few of the commemorative coins for sale from the Parish office on Brannon Way. These are unique collectors’ pieces so get one while you can, only £5.

News Report from Cllr. Michael Lilley for Ryde Appley and Elmfield 07769 551 578 | Michael.lilley@iow.gov.uk www.michaellilley.uk Hot July in Ryde July has been not only very hot but also sizzling with activity. Every weekend in July had events on Ryde streets and beaches. July has visually showcased the transformation and work of Ryde Town Council. This has included dredging the harbour and moving sand onto the beaches from Puckpool to Esplanade. Flags, banners, sand, deckchairs, parasols, sun beds, lifeguards, and paddleboards make the Ryde seafront a most-go safe place to enjoy the summer of 2022. Eastern gardens had a range of events that brought music and the crowds. The improvements of the Marina with a new office and the newly dredged harbour, has filled the berths and welcome new sailing visitors. Appley Tower Day On the 2nd July, Appley Tower Day was held and a new play about the history of the Tower was premiered by the Appley Tower Players. This new theatre group of Ryde and IW residents presented “Where there’s a Will there is a Way”, which is the translation of the Tower’s Latin motto. A 250 plus audience saw Victorian Ryde residents Sir William Hutt (played by me) and Miss Brigstocke visit the Tower. It was 1878 and Sir William had organised snippets of Shakespearean plays for the theatre loving Miss Brigstocke. These included Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer’s Night Dream, Henry V, and the Tempest. The pilot play is part of the bid for the final funding application being submitted for the renovation of the Tower in 2023. The idea is to use the play to tell the story of the Tower in local schools and community venues. 18
Ryde Mardi Gras – 9th July Ryde Schools had worked for weeks with the New Carnival Company in developing their entries for the Ryde Mardi Gras. The result was amazing, and it was great to see Ryde Streets filled with colour and joy after 2 years absence. The pandemic had made it impossible for this annual event amongst others to happen. Hundreds of children were involved, and thousands lined the streets. IW Pride Parade– 16th July This was an amazing event and as Mayor of Ryde, I actively took part. Young people at Network Ryde (Ryde’s Youth service) had made some colourful T-Shirts for the occasion. Ryde Town Council staff and councillors joined young Ryde residents in the parade. IW Pride celebrates diversity and inclusivity in our community, especially the LGBT community. It was a joyous day with music at Eastern Gardens with a range of stalls. Thousands attended over three days. All three events brought Ryde alive as residents and visitors celebrated the diversity, drama, music, creativity and fun that make Ryde such a special place. These events were free and were able to happen through the support of Ryde Town Council.
