Welcome to the December and Christmas edition of Island Magazines. Like me you are probably wondering where the year has gone and the mild weather we have been experiencing certainly doesn’t make it feel like Christmas is just around the corner... but believe me it is!! 2017 has been a great year and Island Magazines has gone from strength to strength and this is thanks to our advertisers, readers and contributors who have continued to support our local community publication. I enjoy receiving emails and phone calls from readers passing on positive thoughts and also keeping me informed with local news and information. Please keep using the services of our advertisers and remember to tell them you saw them advertised here and you can keep up to date with events happening on the Island by going to our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on pages 14 and 15.

News Report from Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I start to write my December report, the weather has become colder and we have just had Remembrance Sunday. I attended the service at the Wootton War Memorial and church service at St. Edmunds. It never ceases to amaze me how such a small community as Wootton would have lost so many young men in the two World Wars and of course Paul Shephard who lost his life in Northern Ireland. Paul, had he lived, would have been about sixty now, the same age as me. We went to school together at Wootton Primary and I remember him well. Of course the ancient church of St. Edmunds would have been well known to all those that gave their young lives. So very sad. I attended the planning committee in October to speak against the Lushington Hill development, whilst the land is outside the defined village envelope but is adjacent to it so was deemed to be acceptable. It is quite a good plan but does not include any affordable properties which is what the village is so short of but planning permission was granted. The parish council is discussing doing another housing needs assessment, this would replace the one which is to expire in about a years’ time. Residents will be consulted during the process. A planning application has been made to convert the old Hamilton’s butchers into a restaurant, it will be good to see the premises occupied again and I wish the new owners all the best in their new venture. With the mention of Hamilton’s, I have recently learnt of the passing of Andy Gustar who owned the business for many years and I pass on my condolences to his family. 8

Also please do not forget the Parish Council meet every third Tuesday of the month, at the Old School, New Road at 7 pm, to look at issues that affect the parish and is a good opportunity to raise any concerns that you might have, at the start of the meeting. One issue I know that worries a lot of people is men and woman sleeping rough on the Island, the numbers are not large but the fact it happens at all is a concern, and one that the government wants councils to tackle. The council is working in partnership with the Salvation Army and have secured funding to help tackle the issue and help people who for whatever reason find themselves having to sleep rough. The Salvation Army have now set up a winter night shelter based in Newport. One thing I have noticed is that the autumn leaf fall is getting later. I think this is probably a sign that global warming is real. Why I raise this is because of the impact leaf mulch can have on drains and ditches and when we have substantial rain fall, this can cause flooding and although Island Roads are contracted to keep them free and do a good job in this, occasionally they do get blocked. If you think there might be a problem and not cleared or a flood risk please let me know. The build up to Christmas has now started as I write this with the Christmas adverts on the television and there does seem to be competition to see who can produce the best advert. I know some do not like the season starting so early but I love the build-up.

Barry Abraham.
