elcome and can you believe this is the December issue and Christmas is very nearly upon us.

I can feel the excitement in the air in the build up to the big day and our ‘Dates for your Diary’ section is brimming with events happening both locally and across the island. There is a Christmas Fayre or event for everyone, whether you’re a Christmas fanatic or best friends with the Grinch! Although we still have a long road ahead of us regarding Covid, at least we are in a better place than we were this time last year and we can get to spend time with family and friends over the festive period. December is the start of winter and I remember back when we had that week-long heat wave in summer, I was wishing for the colder weather... as they say, be careful what you wish for!! With the weather set to turn cold please remember to check on others, especially if you have elderly neighbours or anyone on their own. Winter is a lonely time for many and just 30 minutes of company can be the difference between a good day and a bad day. On another note... who spotted the typo in last month’s sudoku puzzle? Thanks to Nathan for letting me know and my apologies to everyone for this oversight and I hope it didn’t puzzle you too much. I hope you all have a great December and I wish you A Very Merry Christmas and I look forward to catching up with you again in the New Year.

News Report for Wootton Bridge from Cllr Daryll Pitcher Tel: 07511 045 145 | daryll@planetmail.net WAGE (Wootton/Whippingham Against Gravel Extraction) have started campaigning against plans to excavate nearly a million tonnes of gravel and sand from the Palmers Farm site. The first meeting of the group was held at Lakeside Hotel and was well attended by members of the public. WAGE intend to cooperate with other interested groups affected by the proposal, such as ramblers, cyclists and environmentalists. If you were unable to attend their meeting, I suggest visiting their website: wage-iw.org for more information. Community pressure groups such as WAGE are the best defence against proposals like the one at Palmers Farm as they are able to work cross party and unite people to one cause. I have received several reports of inconsiderate parking around the village. Much of it seems to be happening in the Mary Rose Avenue / Downsview Gardens area. I know that parking is at a premium around these streets but please consider others who may have mobility issues, children in pushchairs or other reasons why they may need to use the whole pavement width. On a similar note, parking too close to people’s driveways or junctions is also very inconsiderate. This happens an awful lot around the Footways area when there are things happening on the Rec but also elsewhere such as the laybys in the High Street and sometimes the end of Palmers Road. I have approached both the Isle of Wight Council and the Police over this matter, but I would rather that we took the time to look out for each other first before the authorities have to come in with a heavy hand. 4

There have been numerous recent instances of flooding on Brannon Way. I have been disappointed with Island Roads’ record keeping as they don’t seem to have registered all the complaints over the years. I know that there have been problems there for a very long time and I think it is time they were sorted out. The flooding often makes the pavement impassable, and this is of particular concern for the residents of Homebray House and surrounding areas. To their credit Island Roads have responded to the complaints and have carried out much work to the drains in an attempt to clear them. However, it has become obvious that either there is a serious defect, or the drains are not up to the job. Given the length of time this has been happening I am leaning towards the latter explanation, a view strengthened when I checked a map from 1897 which showed a pond in the exact spot where the water now (or should I say still) gathers. This information has been passed on along with the suggestion that improvements are likely needed. I was privileged to attend both acts of remembrance at the war memorial at St. Edmund’s Church and I was particularly pleased to see the Scouts on the Sunday. I have played the Last Post at these events for thirty years now and although I expect to attend plenty more it is important to bring the next generations along and explain why we attend and what we are remembering. This is my last column of 2021 so I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and may all your Christmases be Wight!

A Few December Facts... December used to be the tenth month of the Roman year, and it gets its name from the word ‘decem’, which means ten. December originally had just 30 days according to the ancient Roman calendar. When the calendar was changed for the Julian calendar, December gained a day, making it the seventh and last month in the year with 31 days. In the northern hemisphere winter begins on either December 1st (if you follow the meteorological seasons), or after the winter solstice on the 20th or 21st of December (if you follow the astronomical seasons) and there are fewer daylight hours in December than in any other month. More than 80,000 people a year are rushed to hospital due to festive falls, Christmas crashes and decoration disasters! About 1,000 people a year are hurt by decorations alone, so be careful with the tinsel this year. The tradition of putting tangerines in stockings comes from the 12th-century French nuns who left socks full of fruit, nuts and tangerines at the houses of the poor. December 12th is Poinsettia Day. December 28th is considered by some to be the unluckiest day of the year. An ancient legend states that forest animals can speak in human language on Christmas Eve. However, it is bad luck to test this superstition. In 1647 Oliver Cromwell, English Puritan leader, banned the festivities of Christmas for being seen as immoral on such a holy day. Anyone who was seen celebrating was arrested! The ban was lifted in 1660. Father Christmas is a magical man of mystery, delivering presents to all the children in the world in just a single night! Researchers have found that his super sleigh would need to travel at 650 miles per second, and stop off at 822 homes every second, in order to successfully deliver every single present! No wonder he needs a whole year to recuperate!

ABUSE Doesn’t Always Leave Bruises and Broken Bones: The Inner Damage Can Be Much Worse ABUSE can be psychological, controlling, sexual, physical, emotional, digital or financial. ABUSE is control, blatant disrespect and hurtful words. ABUSE can come from any type of relationship - siblings, parents, children, friends, work colleagues, work management. Break the Cycle CIC was founded by Maggie Currie in 2016 and her ‘Mind the Gap’ courses have been written specifically to help people who have or are suffering abuse in any form. Maggie has experience of working with people from all walks of life and the results from her courses have been truly remarkable.

ALL ‘MIND THE GAP’ COURSES ARE FREE. The 12-week courses are for men and women, and they will teach you how to rebuild your confidence and move forward positively in your life, on your terms. The sessions help build support networks, learn new skills and increase self-belief.

It is NOT okay • To be humiliated in public • For you to be forced to do something you do not agree with • To be told you are ugly or unattractive • To be forced to choose between your friends or partner/wife/husband • To be controlled • To be made to feel guilty for somebody else’s anger. It is their issue and not your fault.

The next ‘Mind the Gap’ course for women will begin on Monday 10th January 2022 and the ‘Mind the Gap’ course for men will begin on Wednesday 12th January 2022. Both courses are being held at the Newport Methodist Church, Quay Street, Newport from 10am – 12pm To book your place on this course please email hello@breakthecycle.org.uk

To my knowledge, please let me know otherwise, he is the I must be getting older as the days, months last surviving D-Day veteran and years seem to disappear so fast these in Ryde. It was really moving to see him be days. I recently had my booster jab, like at the front of the parade being pushed by many of us. It is hard to believe that 12 the Ryde British Legion Chair, Lyn Ashby months ago, we were at early stages of to the service at All Saint’s Church and then vaccinations and not sure where the World to the Memorial where he laid a wreath with was going. Sadly, many have died since, others. I will never forget the tears in his eyes but we need hope and the vaccination as he saluted his lost comrades. We simply programme and the gallant work of the should never forget those who gave their NHS, has provided most of us a chance lives for us. We all met up to cut the cake of to survive. The biggest thing I have learnt the 100th birthday of the Poppy appeal at through the pandemic is human kindness is the Crown afterwards and I do wish to thank everywhere and that this hand of friendship Lyn Ashby and her team for all the work is so important. she does in supporting veterans. She is a real star! Veterans in Ryde have Lovers on the High Street which was really built a touring van to support veterans across buzzing. There is now an emerging mix of the Island. There are over 14000 veterans shops, restaurants and cafes to enjoy. On on the Isle of Wight and many experience December 2nd, the New Carnival Company loneliness and isolation especially through is hosting the now annual Ryde Merry and Covid. Dale Hillier, a resident from St. Bright event on the High and Union Streets John’s Hill and a veteran of the Falklands with a tour around the Town Centre with (HMS Intrepid) is behind the touring veteran parades, dances, samba bands and many van and now planning to establish a Veteran lantern displays. It is late night shopping café on the High Street. Cllr Ian Dore night and real fun for all the family. I will be (Binstead and IW Armed Forces Champion) turning on the Ryde (revamped) Xmas lights and I are supporting Dale as this initiative is with the Grinch. Look forward to seeing you so needed. all there! On Remembrance Sunday, I was very honoured to be accompanied by Richard Harry Corderoy, who is a 96-year-old veteran living in my Ward of Appley and Elmfield. Richard was at the Normandy 8

Please have a joyous Xmas and remember there is support and kindness in Ryde and please telephone the Ryde Community HUB (managed by Aspire with support from Ryde Town Council) on 716020 if you need support this winter.

News Report from Cllr Phil Jordan - Ryde North West. Tel: 07929 376375 | Email: phil.jordan@iow.gov.uk What a year we have experienced. Covid has been the game changer for about all of us in some way or another and we are yet to really understand the shift in our lives it has made and may make going into the future. One of the things we must start understanding is the way people are working from home more and how that may never change back to pre-covid days. The impact on travel is enormous, especially commuter travel, and we see how that reduction in passengers is affecting the level of services being offered more generally as income falls short of maintaining the revenue needed to provide the extensive travel services we all want and would like to have.

gain to the transport offer in Ryde will offset that initial period. A cycle way through the area is planned and as well as a needed upgrade to the station – which includes better upgraded toilets fully accessible – we will see the old tramway along the length of the pier transformed into a fully pedestrianised walkway away from the current system of right next to the vehicles using the pier.
