News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley – Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com or call/text 07769551578 Happy New Year – Vision for Ryde in 2017
Aspire and Community Development in Ryde
I wish everyone a very happy and prosperous New Year. I thought in my January report I would focus on issues and causes I am looking out for in early 2017 and ones I will be following with interest.
I am a great fan of the Aspire project on Dover Street and admire how in 2016 the project has grown. It is an ambitious project which really supports the whole community in so many ways. I wish to support Aspire in 2017 to gain major funding to really develop Night Time Economy community projects which will tackle some of the social issues facing the Town such as I attended a meeting in December about the homelessness, poverty, and unemployment. Ryde Night Time Economy which is simply about people having too much to drink and Age Friendly Ryde being anti-social. There is a new group of representatives from the Police, Community I am a Ryde Age Friendly Ambassador along Safety, local licensees, Ryde Town Council with Cllr Woodward and Cllr Lucioni. There and others developing a plan to decrease is a Ryde Age Friendly steering group and we crime triggered by alcohol at night. are currently looking at the issue of access Ryde Arena – New Community Action Group I am supporting a group of skaters, ice hockey players, families, fans, and local business people who all have a passion for the former ice rink on the Esplanade and want to see it reopen. The group have successfully applied for the building to be registered as a Community Asset which means the owners of the current lease have to recognise this interest and communicate with the group. They have developed a business plan, raising finance and more importantly trying to lobby the leaseholders (an overseas’ owned asset company) to hand over the lease. The building owners, Isle of Wight Council are very supportive. This building is an important community and tourist facility which could bring jobs and much more to Ryde. We need to make sure it reopens in 2017. 4
and transport for older Ryde adults that find it difficult to all parts of the Town. I want to see some scheme develop in 2017. Isle Access at Esplanade Station
Isle Access is a community business focussing on accessibility for all and in 2017 they will convert the old ticket office at Ryde Esplanade Station next to Bus Station into a Café and Accessibility Shop. This will enable tourists and local people with disabilities and accessibility difficulties to enjoy Ryde and Island fully. It is estimated that Accessibility Tourism could increase the number of visitors by 40% and give an extra boost to our Economy. These are only a few of the projects/schemes which are in Ryde but they are a few to watch out for and ones I will be flying the flag for. Happy New Year.

Coronation Turkey If you have any turkey left over from Christmas and want a quick and easy recipe then this coronation turkey is just the job. It’s a nice break away from rich food but it certainly doesn’t lose any of its taste. This is perfect as a salad, in pitta bread or pimp your packed lunch as this will certainly be the tastiest sandwich filling you’ll have. All you needs is:4 tablespoons Hellmann’s Mayonnaise 2 teaspoons mild curry powder 60ml fat free natural yogurt Lemon juice, to taste 2 tablespoons mango chutney 500g leftover turkey from a roast, or turkey breast, cooked and chopped 30g red onion, finely sliced Flaked almonds, toasted (optional) Handful of dried sultanas (optional) All you need to do is:- 1. Mix together the Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, curry powder, natural yogurt, lemon juice and mango chutney. 2. Add the chopped turkey and sliced red onion. 3. Mix well and sprinkle with toasted almond flakes and sultanas (optional)
Christmas Pudding or Mince Pie Ice Cream Here is another quick and easy recipe and can be made with Christmas pudding or mince pies or why not push the boat out and use both. There is no cooking with this just a bit of mixing. Take a tub of vanilla Ice cream out the freezer and allow to soften (not completely thawed, but soft enough to stir through). Break up the mince pies or Christmas pudding into bite-size pieces, then stir through the ice cream. Put back in the freezer and everytime you pop to the kitchen delve in and have a kingsize scoop.

Resolutions…. It’s that time of the year again, when we say goodbye to one year and welcome in another. It’s traditional to make yearly resolutions, which normally get broken before the last of the Turkey is used up and bubble and squeak is on the menu for the fourth day running. We can thank the Babylonians for this tradition as it is believed they were the first to make New Year’s resolutions and the early Christians believed the first day of the new year should be spent reflecting on past mistakes and resolving to improve oneself in the new year. My resolutions are pretty much the same year after year and the reason being is because I break them year after year. They are standard resolutions and include at least four maybe five from the list of top ten resolutions, which are lose weight, eat more healthily, exercise more, be more patient, stick to a budget, stop smoking, save money, get more organised, find a better job and to just be a better person over all. It’s good to know I am not alone in my thinking and planning and failing!!!!! Traditions go back a long way and each country has its different beliefs – take Italy for example… apparently Italians wear red underwear on New Year’s Day to bring good luck all year long. I do hope they wear clothes on top otherwise that will certainly be a sight for sore eyes. Back in ancient times it was believed that noisemaking and fireworks on New Year’s eve were thought to dispel evil spirits and bring good luck for the forthcoming year. I’m not
convinced with this but one tradition that really makes my mind boggle is that in some countries it’s good luck to eat foods like black eyed peas, ham and cabbage because it is thought they bring prosperity. If you want to have a Happy New Year, don’t eat lobster or chicken. Lobsters can move backward and chickens can scratch in reverse, so it is thought these foods could bring a reversal of fortune. Just to be safe I think I might just have a sandwich for lunch on New Year’s Day now. If you want a good New Year tip then I suggest you make sure your car is securely locked as statistics from the National Insurance Crime Bureau revealed that more vehicles are stolen on New Year’s Day than any other holiday. Does anybody know why this would be because I certainly can’t understand it? Another tradition in Colombia, Cuba and Puerto Rico is that some families stuff a large doll, which is called Mr. Old Year, with memories from the past year. They also dress him in clothes from the outgoing year. At midnight, he is set ablaze, thus burning away the bad memories. I would imagine this could be quite satisfying and a cleansing routine, to forget the past and move on to a bright future. Now where did I put that doll which I can dress in that ghastly knitted jumper I got for Christmas… Whatever your traditions are I hope you have fun doing them and good luck with your resolutions I hope you at least last until the end of January and I wish you all a Happy and Peaceful New Year. Debbie

I have been informed that there will not be an executive meeting until the new year with the allocation of our locally much needed 700k from Isle of Wight Council on the agenda (this meeting has been deferred since October), the money will to go towards the 4.8 million of Government and 400k of Flood levy already agreed funding for the Environment Agency to finally fix our local Monkton Mead flood problem. Worryingly no meeting date has been set. If your making a New Years wish over the holidays make sure you include the materialisation of this funding because without it we lose the project along with all other allocated monies. Its very frustrating for the Flood Action Group as we have been holding bi monthly meetings with the Environment Agency, Southern Water, Isle of Wight Council and Highways (now Island Roads) ever since the local flooding of 2010. It has been a long journey, with many twists and turns, that finally resulted in an approved engineering plan and fix from the Environment Agency. Fingers crossed. The police informed a Ryde Town Council meeting that they are now working with all agencies to tackle the local alcohol and drug abuse problems that have blighted our district during 2016. They will hopefully work with housing to decrease the local top heavy numbers and 10
remove the addictive supply chain that has fuelled our local burglaries, muggings and antisocial behaviour. I will be closely monitoring the Police and cross agency progress on this issue during 2017. Please do call 101 or 999 if you are affected or have information that could help the Police as local statistics will provide the much needed extra manpower necessary to overcome this problem. I have recently been informed by council officers that the owners of the Vectis Hall will be cleaning up the property, would be nice if they can go all the way and finally fix the roof etc. Still waiting for an update from the Chief executive on his progress in getting a meeting with the leaseholders of Ryde Arena, I’m of the view that they are in breach of their lease by being closed without submitting a development/business plan to IW Council. The facility is supposed to be an open leisure facility for Ryde whether ice skating or not, we need freeholder action? I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a healthy & peaceful New Year and look forward to seeing you all out enjoying Ryde seafront and warm weather, (roll on summer) won’t be long. Best regards Wayne

Here’s what a couple of Shantech Electrical customers have said about them:I had Rob from Shantech Electrical round for two days after we moved into our new house in Freshwater. It’s an old house and I was worried about the state of the wiring. Rob spent the couple of days he was here getting in and behind all kinds of places and up and down in the loft. The work was very thorough, there was no mess and he took the time to actually explain what he was doing and why. All in all a good professional job. (Jamie M – Freshwater)

Shantech Electrical came to put some wiring outside for lighting to go down the garden and into our summer house. The price was good, they turned up on time and left everything clean and tidy, and most importantly it all worked fine. I would highly recommend Shantech.
