Dear Readers Welcome to the first issue of 2016 and a Happy New Year to you all. Christmas is now done and dusted for another year and it’s time to get back to normal. I do love it when the Christmas decorations are put up but I think I like it more when they come down. The house always looks so much bigger and like many others I take my down on New Years Day. January is always a quiet month but there are still a couple of events happening on the Island and you will find the ‘Dates for your Diary’ section on page 13. This months issue is still packed with news and information including regular reports from Councillors. The puzzle page is very popular and is a good way to get the brain working again after a hectic Christmas and New Years Eve. Have you set yourself some New Years resolutions? If you have are you likely to stick at them until at least February? Feel free to let me know if you make any, which ones you make and how long you stick to them!!! Until next month...... Best wishes Debbie text or call 07880 587 931 email: rydemagazine@gmail.com twitter @islandmagazines www.islandmagazines.co.uk The editor does not necessarily hold the same views as those expressed by contributors and advertisers and reserves the right to refuse or alter material where necessary. 2

Mulberry Tree Wood Turnery Locally sourced hardwood and softwood timber cut to size Main I.O.W agents for Record-Power woodworking tools and equipment and Chestnut finishing Products

one-to-one beginners bowl turning courses

It started off as a hobby in 1997 for Andy Fortune and due to his passion and demand for his skilled work as a turner in 2012 it turned into a full time business and The Mulberry Tree Wood Turnery was born and Andy has now become a Member of the Register of Professional Turners.

The business started off small in a tiny workshop in Northwood but in 2014 Andy had the opportunity to move to bigger www.mtwoodturnery.com premises at Arreton Barns Craft Village. Tel: 472696 or 07974 240870 Arreton Barns Craft Village With these bigger premises came a separate workshop and shop and Andy was able to provide a lot more for local woodworkers and turners and is now the main agent on the Island for Record- Power Tools and Equipment and Chestnut finishing products.

The new retail shop attached to his workshop meant that Andy was able to increase the range of items available for resale which include unique bowls, platters and hollow forms. He also sells his products through other shops and galleries on the Island and takes commission work when required for those extra special pieces.

If you are looking for a present for the person who has everything, I bet they haven’t yet had the pleasure of attending one of Andy’s courses which are available as either a half or full day. Both courses have received positive comments from students on Andy’s teaching ability and patience.

Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide It was sad to hear Ryde Arena had closed on the 24th November due to wind damage to the roof that caused water to leak into its electric system. Insurers look set to pay out for the urgent repairs with the remaining 15k coming from the trusts funds. It was encouraging to hear that a Sport England grant of 75k has been awarded and is now heading their way to help them refurbish the bar and cafe areas, plus provide for new changing rooms and toilet facilities. So hopefully weather permitting the Arena should be up and running again in the not too distant future, I wish the trust well and intend to continue fundraising for them at every opportunity.

units, I do however feel a quality hotel would fit the location much better. I will be monitoring Zero C’s advertising and marketing of the hotel plot with enthusiasm. The official Zero C press release says they hope to start developing the site this summer, it will be good to eventually see the ugly fencing come down. I sit writing this report hoping to see the Royal York owners keep their promise by starting the first phase of the refit of the derelict site this month. This large part of George Street has remained an eyesore and fire hazard for far too long.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish The RBA lead by Lyn Blackledge has had great all readers a Peaceful 2016. fun in Ryde over Christmas with their Elves ‘Mrs Hedgehog’s Knit Bits’ on Shelves initiative, many local retailers have ‘Wool, Needles, Hand Knits, housed the Elves to great amusement of the Pins and accessories local Christmas shoppers. Yinspire by Jessica Garbett What can Yoga offer our busy lifestyles?

Now open in Brading Yoga classes in Brading ~ Monday evening ~ Thursday breakfast ~ Thursday evening ~ Saturday morning (monthly) Classes in Ryde Ͳ Tuesday evening Private classes also available Beginners always welcome

Our world is busy, busy, busy these days with seemingly constant demands on our energy mind and body. Our phones are busy chirping at us with text messages, email, tweets and Facebook updates; we are targeted by advertisers inside and outside of our homes; we face the daily stresses of busy working lives; busy roads and pavements; busy social lives; busy family schedules. At these times its easy to feel overwhelmed and snap at the simplest thing – the unthoughtful word from a partner, the harsh look from a colleague, the unfiltered emotions of a child, the criticism of a stranger – and we can feel bruised, resentful and hurt. Later we may feel guilty for overreacting or not getting in some witty riposte. Put simply a stress circle from our daily lives. These are just some examples of how we can find ourselves tense and tired from daily life. There are many ways to counter this, and Yoga is one of them. Often the image of Yoga is bending and twisting in stretchy clothes – and if I had a pound for every “I’m too stiff to do Yoga” I’d be able to retire! – but the original essence of Yoga is “stilling the thoughtwaves of the mind”, put simply getting on top of our stresses so they don’t overwhelm us.

Please also don’t forget that this is the time of the year when our little feathered friends rely on us the most to keep them fed and watered. Stuart’s reputation is really growing for the Winter is the hardest time of year for all our wonderful wildlife photos he takes and many wildlife to survive due to scarcity of food. Birds people will have seen his wares at Island Craft require high energy (high fat) foods during the Fairs recently. You can order prints online cold weather to maintain their fat reserves direct from his website at www.wightwildlife. to survive the frosts nights. Fat balls [seeds co.uk and you will also find out details of the mixed with fat] will be popular additions to other stockists on the Island to purchase prints your feeding stations and are readily available from. to buy or you can easily make your own or put out some finely chopped unsalted bacon rind Stuart also offers tuition and workshops such or grated hard cheese to provide energy-rich fat as ‘Introduction to Wildlife Photography’ and for your birds these can be done in groups of 4 or on a 1 to 1 basis. He is also running workshops titled Some fat balls come in a nylon mesh bag but ‘Getting more out of your Camera’ and this is always remove these because birds get their ideal for beginners to learn their way around claws caught in the mesh, causing injury and their camera to ensure they get the best use 7 potentially trapping them.

CARE IN THE GARDEN

It’s been a long, hard but worthwhile 4 year journey for John Goodenough and Gill Smith who are the driving force of Care in the Garden, a not for profit organisation that is the hub of the community in bringing structure and stability into the lives of those with support needs. They have given way for opportunities to evolve within the organisation to ensure their team of volunteers who come from all different backgrounds, but have one thing in common, can have the opportunity of a full life and to be treated the same as everyone else. In four years Care in the Garden has gone from strength to strength and John and Gill put their everything into this project which they are so passionate about and which they believe in. The didn’t start with grants instead they created a commercially viable business that ploughs all its profits back into the venture and in turn has enabled them to watch it grow and succeed and transform the life of others. They started with 4 trainees and now have 28 and along the way the trainees have learnt new skills, mixed with others and have improved and worked on their social skills and interaction with members of the public and within the team. There are four main sections to the Care in the Garden structure:

Palmer Brook Community Nursery The Garden Shed Team The Veg Shed Mower Men

Palmer Brook Community Nursery - This is where they started with the plant side of the business, selling to the public and wholesale, they produce, grow and sell plants for each season along with bulbs, plugs and seeds. They offer some of the most competitive prices on the Island and nearly all customers return because the price may be low but the quality isn’t. They have plants to suit all budgets including, hangings baskets, filled troughs and a large variety of indoor and outdoor plants. Whatever your plant requirements are then Care in the Garden should be your first port of call. 8

The Garden Shed Team - have developed a fantastic decorative range of wood products which include bird tables, troughs, picket fences, wheelbarrows and more. They are also working on an exclusive range of Care in the Garden products and the Christmas period has proved how popular their handmade animal planters have been as they literally scurried out the doors.

The Veg Shed - This is the place to get your fresh Veg including Island free range eggs and sacks of potatoes. They source many local products and freshness is guaranteed. The Veg Shed is growing and there will be some positive changes happening to it in 2016.

The Mower Men - mowing their way across the Island. The Mower Men do mowing for nursing homes and some council contracts and the volunteers work with a professional gardener on these contracts. Care in the Garden as a whole is a community asset and they are moving forward with ongoing development and are pleased to be able to have a dementia friendly team that works with individuals and care homes across the Island.

COME AND SEE US IN JANUARY AND HAVE A BROWSE AROUND THE SHOP The shop at Palmer Brook Nursery is filled with wonderful items and in January they are promoting their wildlife section and are particularly looking after our feather friends and have a range of bird boxes, tables and a fantastic range of feeding wreaths which will ensure the birds aren’t neglected this winter. Their shop also contains a great variety of gifts, pots and ornaments and they have a great selection of plants and a monthly offer so please make sure you pop in to see them and help support this wonderful community project. Christmas in Ryde

It was great to see the colourful Christmas trees that were out and making our wards in Ryde look wonderful and putting us all in the Christmas spirit. I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and let me wish you all a Happy 2016. Thank you to Ryde Town Council for the street decorations which added to the special seasonal atmosphere.

engage with this process and participate to put forward concerns or ideas.

Ryde Academy

Activity was noted by local residents when surveyors were spotted on the campus (which includes the formers recreation ground). The activity undertaken is to support a possible new build for the The Government spending review Academy and I have been given an assurance During December the further austerity that residents will be given the opportunity measures came through to once again hit the to make comment, and be reassured prior to local Isle of Wight Council budget. The next any commencement of any ground works. few months will be challenging to elected Councillors when endeavouring to support local services. The Government has realised that social care has been cut badly since 2010 and has stated that Councils can raise funds for this vital service by increasing the council tax by 2% even with an increase the services will be under pressure. The areas of my national remit, as Chair of The Culture, tourism and Sport have seen no reduction in funding which will assist those areas of service, however this does not allow for inflation etc.

Public Transport

I am still campaigning for an introduction of onboard announcement system to assist our partially sighted in explaining what stop is next etc

Planning

The area action plans which involve future shape, size and densities with new build and infrastructure are now out to consultation and I would urge any interested parties to 12

Rotary You may remember that I gave a mention about the Rotary Shoe Box Appeal in the December issue and I reported that the wonderful generous people of the Isle of Wight had donated 499 shoe boxes to be sent to disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Philippines. Well there has been a little bit of confusion and the figure of 499 that was given to me was for the number of boxes donated from just the residents of East Cowes and Cowes (a few late ones came in after the amount was tallied up so the final figure for East Cowes and Cowes is 514) and listed below are details of the final amounts which were at the drop off points in each town and you will see that they accumulate to an amazing 2326. Ryde 537, Sandown 242, Shanklin 97, Godshill 104, Vectis Sunrise (Newport) 514, Ventnor 56 and West Wight 262
