News Report from - Cllr Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde. Email wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Tel 07792 670771 Twitter @RydeAbide My time as a Councillor and IWC Cabinet Member has been filled with budgets for months and will continue to do so for a couple more, I’ve also been sitting in on the “Wight We Want” local area resident workshops where attendees have received local economic and social statistics and asked to list what they like best and least about their area to work up solution priorities. The first workshop consultation started in Ryde and was extremely well attended as were most others, these are the first leg of further local conversations about what is needed locally to achieve realistic and useful regeneration.
It was good to see the EA’s temporary emergency flood prevention measures quickly constructed within the Rec and to know they are still constantly digging out and clearing a channel in front of the culvert to let Monkton Mead water escape to the Solent before times of heavy rain. My New Years wish without doubt will be for a quick start in the spring for the Environment Agency engineering of the outfall pipe diversion into Ryde Harbour.
Ryde Town Council have taken a bold step forward to improve our local Youth service, I attended the Network Ryde Youth Cafe launch at 147 High Street on Monday 11th of December, its taken a lot of work but is The Police attended our Ryde Town Council looking like a great centre point for our youth December meeting on the 4th to provide the local crime, Antisocial Behaviour and Domestic to congregate socialise and investigate future opportunities and initiatives. Violence statistics for September, October and November comparing 2017 to 2016 some After visiting the Isle of Wight Food Bank months up but mostly slightly down overall, Headquarters and hearing from Hannah the attending officer told us that because of about the challenges they face with monthly the rise in antisocial behaviour in the shelter running costs, I’ve been brainstorming on the Junction of the Esplanade and Dover possible ways to help provide support via an Street they were considering turning the annual fundraising event and I will be taking internal light off to prevent loitering. on leading this challenge as my New Years resolution for 2018. This obviously inspired some debate as residents living near the shelter at Five ways I wish you all a Peaceful and healthy New Year. junction had asked the Town Council to put a light inside the shelter to prevent antisocial Tel 01983 719945 or behaviour and loitering. I attended the Environment Agencies emergency flood barrier try out in Simeon Recreation Ground on the morning of Thursday 7th of December, as many know the previously planned outfall diversion works for September 2017 were aborted and we are still waiting with bated breath to find out the revised date for the works to begin.

News Reports from Ryde Town Councillor Karen Lucioni Email: karen.rydesouth@mail.com | Mobile 07506930109 www.facebook.com/yourvoicecountsryde YOUNG CARERS AWARENESS DAY – 25TH January 2018 Who are young carers? A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled, misuses drugs or alcohol, bereavement or even family separation. How many young carers are there? There are about 700,000 young carers in the UK. That’s about 1 in 12 secondary aged pupils. There are likely to be young carers in every school and college. What might a young carer do? Practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping. Physical care, such as helping someone out of bed. Emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed. Personal care, such as helping someone dress. Managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions. Helping to give medicine. Helping someone communicate. Looking after brothers and sisters. Let’s give these young carers the recognition they deserve and support they deserve. Please do get in touch if I can offer my support to any young carer. LETS NEVER ASSUME OUR YOUNG ARE TOO YOUNG TO CARE, Jigsaw Family Support is a community based, non-profit child-focused organisation that works with everyone affected by family separation and on January 25th I will be 8

News Report from Wootton Bridge Town and County Councillor Barry Abraham | Email:- barry.abraham@iow.gov.uk As I start to write my monthly column I have just returned to the Island after a weekend away. Everything was fine until we got to Waterloo Station at midday, only to see a sign reporting a small trackside fire at Clapham Junction, all the trains had been delayed and our 1.30 pm train to Portsmouth Harbour had been cancelled. Fortunately with some quick thinking from my wife, we were able to catch the Weymouth train which was still running and come home via Southampton and Red Funnel. It brought home to me how much we rely on public transport and services, what chaos reigns when things go wrong. The weather has taken a turn for the worse and there was recently a collision on Park Road with people trapped in their car. Apparently the road had been un-gritted. I know Island Roads have invested heavily in Lorries and materials to keep our roads free from ice as much as possible. I will be making enquiries why the road was possibly not gritted. With the weather being so cold we do need to do as much as we can to keep an eye on our neighbours, especially the elderly who might live on their own and have no close family to help with getting to the shops and keeping warm. If you do know of people who might be struggling let me know and I can speak to the right people to see what can be done to help. At the last parish council meeting several residents attended to raise concerns about the demise of the Plane tree on the bridge and were not aware that the council had a report done that outlined the amount of decay. A resident came forward with
10
an offer from a family member who was a specialist tree surgeon, who was prepared to carry out a further investigation free of charge to see if he would concur with the council’s own opinion. As yet I have not had a chance to read the conclusions. A planning application has been lodged with the council to further the development at Darwins at Woodside, this is an application for a further twelve lodges on the southern side of Upper Woodside. My concern is that this is now starting to create a built up area outside of the holiday site and is starting to create an urban feel to the area. There has been a spate of applications for small holiday developments along the road and although I have sympathy for owners to want to create businesses with their land, the impact is now starting to erode the tranquillity of the area. Wootton Parish council are about to create a sustainable transport policy for the village and will be looking at creating cycling initiatives and this will look at the possibilities of quiet roads and also areas where we can have safer routes to schools by making the track on the recreation ground a tarmac route instead of the present stony surface. In this cold weather I have noticed how the birds are now picking up all the crab apples that have been left on the ground, it is amazing to see how they are clearing up what I thought was just rotting fruit. I would like to wish everyone a Happy New Year and hopefully a healthy one. Barry Abraham.
