News Report from Cllr Michael Lilley – Green Councillor for Ryde East Ward Email: michaellilleyiow@gmail.com or call/text 07769551578 Summer starts to see Ryde come alive with many visitors and a programme of events through to September 2016. As one of the local Councillor’s whose ward encompasses Appley Beach, which for me is one of the best beaches on the Island, I am bias though and seeing it heaving with people is a real joy for me and my family. This month my theme is supporting local community action. Ryde has many amazing innovative local people who want to see improvement in their lives and others. Supporting Veterans and their families Ryde Town Council has joined the Isle of Wight Armed Forces Community Covenant Partnership Board. There are many former servicemen and women and their families in the Town who need support. Many who have disabilities and experience severe posttraumatic stress and need improved support and help.
Isle Access – Campaign for improved access to local amenities for all Isle Access is a Ryde based community interest company that is focusing on improving access to local amenities’ for local residents and tourists. I am currently supporting this local group of people to access financial support for their social business. www.isleaccess.co.uk Sowing the Seeds for future funds and Jobs for Ryde - The Community Investment Event held on 18th May proved successful with over 60 attending. Five major investment organisations attended and guidance on funding applications for a number of local groups was given. One of the attending funders, Power for Change is a Lottery funded national programme which is about empowering local people to lead on change in their communities, was keen to see an emerging Ryde Community proposal to create local jobs.
www.iwight.com/council/OtherServices/ Armed-Forces-Community-Covenant/The-Isleof-Wight-Armed-Forces-Community-Covenant www.thepowertochange.org.uk Hope Road and Save Westridge Farm Campaign - A full planning application has now been submitted by developers and land owner for 80 houses to be built on the site in Ryde East known as Westridge Farm off Hope Road. A local campaign group has emerged and had a meeting on 17th June at Aspire. Many local residents are objecting to the development on the grounds of lack of road infrastructure, the loss of green space and possibly a local dairy farm, and effects to local endangered species such as the dormouse. www.facebook.com/savewestridgefarm
Community Assets and Community Transfer I have asked the RTC Planning Committee to request a list of all property Isle of Wight Council owns in Ryde that could be made available to the Ryde Community and local community organisations so they can consider whether these buildings have a possible important use for the community. For example the former youth service building on the corner of the High Street. There are rights under the Localism Act 2011 that do give powers to local communities to ask for asset transfer and/or the right to bid for them. The key for me is to give local people the opportunity to discuss the use of these buildings for the future.

My Life is A Full Life – The future of Health and social care services on the Island There has been much activity across the Island with many consultation events about the future of health and social care on the Island. In July, Working Groups will finalise a plan for the long-term future that will then be put out for final public consultation. www.mylifeafulllife.com Age Friendly Island - The Age Friendly campaign is to come to Ryde and it is proposed there is a presentation at Ryde Town Council at a future full council meeting. www.agefriendlyisland.org Parking Consultation and other road issues I have been getting a range of requests by local residents in Ryde East about parking in their streets. A regular concern is local businesses parking large commercial vehicles in evenings and weekends that block their vision when coming into the road from their properties. I have fed this into the current parking consultation being carried out by Isle of Wight Council. www.iwight.com/Residents/TransportParking-and-Streets/Parking-Services/ParkingServices1/Parking-Strategy-2016-to-2021

Helping A Feathered Friend in Need. What do I do now? or Who do I call? Are the questions in the forefront of anyone’s mind if they have come across an injured bird, whether it be the common garden sparrow or one of the Queens protected swans. The first call should be to Wild Bird Aid which is a local ‘not for profit organisation’ run by Kerstin Voigt and Claire Newsome. Wild Bird Aid specialise in the rescue, rehabilitation and release of native birds. Claire specialises in all native bird species with emphasis on seabirds, pigeons and doves and Kerstin specialises in corvids (ravens, carrion crows, rooks, jays, magpies, jackdaws), birds of prey as well as swallows, martins, nightjars and swifts and all native birds. They will both endeavour to help all bird species, but at the moment they are unable to provide long time care for any birds not listed and will therefore need to get in touch with other rescues on the Island or mainland. Wild Bird Aid at present are caring for approximately 70 birds and everyday they are faced with problems of running an organisation that is so widely used by the local community. The areas in which they really need help is with volunteers to cover a variety of duties but particularly people to help with the transportation of injured birds and ideally they would like to have volunteers in all areas on the Island, so if an injured bird is found, the volunteer can be called upon to collect the bird and bring it to Wild Bird Aid which is based at a private home in Wootton Bridge for assessment and care. Volunteers are also needed to take care of animals in their own home e.g to rear orphaned small song birds, as Wild Bird Aid cannot accommodate all of these at their premises. Training will be provided if needed. They also require volunteers to help with feeding and cleaning and as you can imagine the running costs are very high and they are always happy to receive financial donations or if you have an Amazon account please take a look at the Wild Bird Aid wish list. Fund-raising plays an important role and they are looking for anyone who would like to come aboard to organise fundraising events to help raise the much needed funds. Some birds which are brought to them will obviously need more in depth medical treatment and on many occasion huge vets bills are accumulated, one such case recently was the swan that had swallowed a fishing hook and therefore vets bills, call out charges, x-rays and procedures were incurred and these can run into hundreds of pounds. Kerstin and Claire are passionate about what they do and desperately need your help. For more information please go to their website www.wild-bird-aid.uk and check out the Wild Bird Aid Wish List on Amazon or you can call Claire on 07874 660863 and Kerstin on 07935 487306. 6

Report from IW Councillor for Ryde North East - Wayne Whittle, Hunters Way, Binstead Hill, Ryde, PO33 3RP. Tel 07792 670771 E: wayne.whittle@iow.gov.uk Twitter @RydeAbide The long awaited Isle of Wight Council (IWC) Parking policy consultation is now live and I would recommend that all local residents with parking issues, suggestions and requests for permit parking/time limited Zones etc now go on line and feed into it at:www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/parking_ strategy_2016_consultation This is our opportunity to outline the local problems caused by commuter parking around the district to IWC. I have walked the Ward and knocked on doors asking residents for their views and I am fully aware that commuter parking is a widespread problem coupled with dumped vehicles that occupy valuable local residential parking spaces, we basically need all the residential parking we can get. The best way to do this is to have time restricted parking coupled with resident permit parking (where requested) it appears to work in the Strand but has shunted the commuters further back to other Streets in the district. We need to note this when commenting as we provide our local parking concerns and requests to Parking Services via the Consultation. I’m hopeful that if enough residents respond we can finally get some action to address the local needs provided. I attended the first preliminary meeting to set up a new Local Police Action Group (LAG) Cllr Moore has agreed to become Chairman once again, we will be writing to past attendees 10
asking them if they would like attend the meetings where we will once again be setting the local priorities for Policing. This past local Beat 7 Group was merged into a new group that covered a wider area, a new Chairman was elected but resigned a year later and meetings became poorly attended, so it slowly fizzled out. The past LAG was a perfect opportunity for the local community, businesses, services etc to engage with the Police providing local issues, fears and concerns. I hope the formation of a new LAG that meets bi-monthly will improve the local understanding and priorities of policing within Ryde as I agree its quite difficult to convey local needs and concerns to a closed front desk at the Police Station. I am currently trying to set up a meeting with the newly elected police and crime commissioner to put forward our local needs and issues. The Bestival Ryde Slide ticket sale site has been launched where you can buy tickets for £5 to enter the prize draw with 600 places up for grabs to ride on the Ryde Slide in Union Street, Ryde on Sunday 17th July. There will be a fancy dress competition where you can win Bestival tickets and Ryde Slide T-shirts, DJ’s will be playing on the day from 11am till 6pm including Rob da Bank. All proceeds will go to Ryde Aspire, Ryde Inshore Rescue, Wight Brainy Bunch, Ryde Arena and the Waterside Trust. To donate and enter the draw visit www.bestival.net. I would like to thank all who donate their time, energy and resources supporting this family event.
New Report from Wayne Whittle continued I feel the couple of newly painted Beach Huts at Appley look lovely and I was thinking it maybe a good idea to have an annual best decorated Ryde Beach Hut competition judged at an Appley and Puckpool Park family fun day, where we could celebrate all that is good at our two great coastal parks and Beaches whilst at the same time try to raise some money for Inshore Rescue and Friends of Appley every year. I am in the process of speaking to someone who may be able to stylishly decorate the interior of the first prize winning Hut and will be airing this “Appley Tower Power” idea with a few event planners and promoters I know. A fact which cannot be emphasised enough to anyone who is reassured by a company stating they are only planning conventional drilling. UKOG, who has been awarded the Isle of Wight licence, have gone to great lengths to portray themselves as being interested only in conventional processes; however this could prove to be a red herring. Many people believe ‘conventional drilling isn’t as bad as fracking’. But this is simply not the case. Frack Free Isle of Wight is determined to ensure that the public is informed of the real facts about oil and gas extraction. Find out more by joining us at our public meeting on, Tuesday 19th July, at The Wilberforce Hall, Main Road, Brighstone, PO30 4AH. (Car Parking in Warnes Lane).
